We were looking for a quick and hearty warm meal on a cold winter day and this spot fit the description! There weren't many people when we arrived around 6pm but it filled up quickly afterwards. The lively atmosphere was a good sign for us. The service was average but nice, as we only got our water/tea filled up once and we didn't see the servers much. We ordered the Pho Dac Biet (large for $15) and the Bot Loc La Chuoi ($12) or the Tapioca Dumplings wrapped in banana leaf to share. The pho broth had a nice depth and there were a decent portion of various beef like flank, tendon and beef balls. We loved the tapioca dumplings because of how chewy and perfectly savoury they were, especially paired with the yummy umami fish sauce. We happened upon Hoi An Cafe because the Dim Sum restaurant we found on Yelp required reservations. Hoi An Cafe was a great find. One of the best Vietnamese food experience we've had the privilege to enjoy outside Vietnam . Our go-to place for Bun Bo Hue. If we are ever craving a good bowl of Bun Bo Hue, this place never lets us down. Probably one of the more authentic places we go to. It's consistently good and we absolutely love all the steamed rice cakes. The Bun Bo Hue flavours are only slightly spicy, extremely fragrant, has a tiny salty and souch punch that I love. A lot of BBH out there is all spice but no fragrance, this is one of the few places I have been satisfied with this delicious spicy, meaty, soupy, thick rice noodle dish. Banh beo Nhan Uot is probably our favorite of all the steamed rice cakes (even though they're all good). The flavour is sweet, salty, umami, the rice cakes are chewy, fresh, and it always comes steaming hot. Service is friendly and quick. The restaurant itself has little decoration but none is needed. Looking for pho for lunch along Victoria Drive. Tough to decide which one as so many Vietnamese establishments between 33rd and 41st Ave. Stopped at Hoi An Cafe as it was full of patrons. Got the last open table and ordered the large beef pho. The small is $14 and the large $15...so was an easy choice. The pho came out fairly quick with the side plate of sprouts and basil leaves. The taste and presentation was in line with other pho I have had in recent weeks. I liked the beef broth. The service was quick and efficient and the establishment was clean. Great food and fast service. All the noodles came out fresh and they were pretty good. I got to try #10 Com Suon Cha Hap (Grilled Lemongrass pork Chop with Meatloaf on rice) was pretty good. Pork chop was full of flavour and the meat was tender. There was so much meat for my food. I also recommend #6 Mi Quang (rice noodle with pork and shrimp) as well. Their pho broth is sweeter than other places. Not bad. I tried their lemon grass pork with meatloaf on rice. The pork was really well marinated. I'm not sure what makes it orangy. It was delicious. The meatloaf was pork, vermicelli, and bits and pieces of other things (maybe carrot and mushroom). It was okay but not my type of food. The sauce was also delicious, a little on the sweeter side. This is a place where the food stands out and is awesome. I would say one of the advantages is that this place is a bit more spacious than other pho places. Not as high volume at lunch time I have found. Prices are also quite affordable to show up and just have that one bowl of pho. My favourite dish from here so far is the Bún bò Hu. I dig having the pork blood and feet a lot more than I would have thought. I also like having a few of those delicious slices of beef included. It's also not as spicy as I would have thought of from a broth. It's just right for me and I appreciate how it doesn't overwhelm in terms of spice. I love the spring rolls here as well. Super solid. My dad and I came here after realizing the wait across the street for dim sum at Western Lake was too long. I'm so glad we came here instead because trying new foods is one of my joys. We ordered the banana leaf sticky dumplings (not sure what they're called) - there's pork inside and it was pretty tasty. It tasted like what you could get at dim sum with the chewy transparent texture outside and a minced pork filling. The mi quang noodles were super delightful and I can't stop thinking about it. The Hubs and I haven't had Pho since before the COVID lockdown, and we got uber-cravings for a bowl of yums today and decided to try a place we have always wanted to try. We arrived at 11:05am on a cloudy June Sunday. Fortunately, there were no line ups and we were seated right away. The COVID seating: 6 tables with 2 tables that can accommodate Customer service: The lady was quite impatient and came by every minute to take our order. I ordered the large Pho Dac Biet (#12 - $11.50) and The Hubs ordered the large Bun Bo Hue (#21 - $11.50). I also ordered the cold coffee (cafe sua - $5.50). I don't know how it was served pre-COVID times, but it came without the drip phin and already all mixed with the condense milk - totally gone with the experience on that one. Kitchen service: Ordered at 11:05am and the food arrived at 11:08am. I don't think we have seen this fast before... Price, Portion, Taste: - Pho Dac Biet (#12 - $11.50): portion-wise I expected bigger portion for a large. I don't normally finish a small these days and I easily finished a large. The meat was a tad fattier than other places. The meat:noodle ratio is appropriate. The broth was flavourful and not overtly fatty. The noodles cooked just right - not over or under cooked. - Bun Bo Hue (#21 - $11.50): same expectation for portions as above (expected bigger for a large). The pork hock is missing, but actually a good thing since the hock takes up a lot of bowl space. The ingredients had less variety (2 half balls, small cube of blood) than other BBHs we had. The meat:noodle ratio is appropriate. The broth was very flavourful and have good notes of salty, lime, and chili. The noodles cooked just right - not over or under cooked. The thirst test: after eating this and walking around the neighbourhood for a few hours, we found that we were surprisingly not feeling lethargic or parched like we are in a desert. Hoi An Cafe is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver. Disclaimer: I am not Vietnamese, but I am quite a picky eater. So far, this is the only Vietnamese place where the taste and the quality that I approved of (and affordable too!). I am not a fan of sweet flavor in my savory food plate, but this place changed my perspective. My favorite was Bánh bèo nhân uót, the shrimp puree was so fresh and it was so tasty . The stemed rice complement the shrimp puree and melted in my mouth, it totally blew my mind. I also liked their Bánh bôt  loc lá trân, the pork and shrimp wrapped inside chewy tapioca served with Chilli paddi was so pleasant. It was a bit spicy, but it was delish! I ordered the Mi Quang which consists of flat yellow rice noodles, prawns, bbq pork, in a light, tangy broth and garnished with crushed peanuts and rice crackers. A plate of lettuce comes on the side with banana blossom herb. This dish was fun to eat, lots of different flavors from the broth and ingredients. By adding the lettuce after, it adds a touch of freshness/crunch to this dish. Must try dish! We also ordered the Banh Bot Loc Tran- tapioca dumplings with fish sauce. I have been here a couple of times and each time it is always packed. It is the better of the places around, and the inside looks a lot cleaner and newer than the other pho places. I ordered their special yellow rice noodle: Cao Lau. Make sure to mix the noodles around so that all the noodles, veggies, pork, etc get covered in the sauce as the sauce is really good. Without it, it can be a bit dry. The portions aren't that big so you may still be hungry, although I do eat a lot. It's so rare to find a place that serve Cao Lau. For those that have never been to Vietnam, I doubt you will know about this dish. It's regional noodle dish that you can almost only find in a small beautiful town of Hoi An in Vietnam. Think of this dish as another variation of Mi Quang. While I like the Cao Lau here, I wish it was a bit more savory instead of a sweet. The other appetizers like banh bot loc and banh beo were soft and delicious. So hard to find a place that also serve banh beo uoc (wet). Most of the places only serve the dried Southern Vietnamese style. read more
