One of those moments at the end of a lovely day and the conversation goes something like "where do you want to eat tonight?" The thought of being downtown is awful...hot summer night, BC Lions game on, beaches packed. So over the bridge to West Vancouver and to Wooden Fish because it's there, it's reliable and the owners and workers there are kind. All they want is for you to enjoy the food, but - and this seems true of many family run Vietnamese places - there is a story they want you to be a part of. So the story of Wooden Fish is captured on their menu, and I share that below, because it's an important part of the experience of eating there. The food is great. A small bowl of spicy beef noodle soup hit the spot and I wish I had noticed the specials sheet because the satay soup bowl looked amazing too. They were out of the home made lychee kombucha of the day, but that's on me. They always sell out of it. I love the staff here. They care for you as a team. They make your day better. Let them feed you, feed your bellies and your heart. I'll admit I've tried the sibling location Pho & Roll before, and wasn't that impressed. We were seated quickly and our order was taken shortly after. - Vietnamese Beef Carpaccio: Very good. Extremely thinly sliced with generous amounts of lime juice and fish sauce. Delicious. - Pho Bo: Very good. Really clean broth, and really well marbled brisket. - Mixed Skewer Meal : Very good. Each of the skewers were nicely marinated, full of flavour and nicely prepared Service was nice. Very pleasant and attentive. Overall, a very nice meal. Walked in after. Hoosing not to eat at an overpriced spot across the street. The food and service was great. They start off brining warm water with lemon. We had the trio rolls (they're huge!!!) These were so filling we could have ended the meal with this. And then we got grilled cuttlefish. It's similar to calamari, chewy with a smokey flavor. We had the sabelfiah vermicelli bowl which is enough for 2 people. The fish was seasoned well, but had a very fish not fresh taste. They did have the most gorgeous presentation but if you dont like for your fish to taste fishy, this is not for you. It had dill and grilled veggies which were fantastic. Came in on a chilly winter night looking for the cozy vibes of pho. Unfortunately, we were seated by the door after a 15 minute wait and the cold air blowing in every time someone entered or exited was pretty uncomfortable. The inside is pretty small. This is a northern style pho place. The rice noodles were wide and flat and there were no bean sprouts, basil or lime wedges. There were 4 condiment jars they gave us for the pho, and the pickled garlic slices was the group favourite. I like that they have two different portion sizes. The broth was delicious, served steaming hot. Chicken wings were crispy on the outside and well-seasoned. Servers were quick and efficient. Man oh man, this humble Vietnamese joint in West Van packs a punch. Although the menu is not much different from most other Vietnamese spots in Vancouver, the star of the show for me, personally, was their array of hot sauces. Typical Viet pho spots usually have the basic combination of hoisin and sriracha as accompaniments to a bowl of pho. I was honestly looking around for the duo of squeeze bottles but was pleasantly surprised by how the sauces strangely worked with our meal. Noodles were good but nothing special. Definitely will come back to try out their other rice dishes because they looked DIVINE as they were rushed past us. The one thing I would highly recommend out here is the egg foam Vietnamese coffee. It was creamy, did not smell like eggs and perfect strength. My benchmark of a Vietnamese restaurant is the pho broth. Wooden Fish has a Hanoi beef noodle soup that stands on its own - the broth was delicious without the need to add bean sprouts, basil, chili oil, Hoisin sauce, or anything else. The skewer plate with vermicelli looked fantastic. I tasted a bit of my friend's pork skewer and was impressed. They have an assortment of homemade sauces - something like Sambal sauce, garlic, and a couple hotter sauces. Prices are slightly higher than your standard Vietnamese, but not by much, and well worth the extra few dollars. They have outside tables that are covered with heats, so you're mostly comfortable in the non-summer months. We sat just inside the door and got a chilly draft every time someone came or left. Good thing we had soup to stay warm. Solid list of alcoholic beer and wine. Free parking off the main street. Just check the signage. read more

Was looking for dinner when my family and I were in Vancouver for the weekend and stumble upon this Vietnamese restaurant that was near our Airbnb so we decided to go try it out! Restaurant was limited on seatings but workers there were super nice and got us two tables to connect with each other since we had a party of six, everyone there was super nice from the first time we walked in to when we were finished. Wooden Fish was a Northern Vietnam side restaurant where they had a lot of northern dishes that I was excited to try. I been wanting to try some Vietnamese Egg Coffee, this was discovered in the Northern side and WOW! I would highly recommend trying the coffee out if you love Vietnamese Coffee! The egg foam on the top tasted like tiramisu, it was fluffy and the perfect sweetness to go along with the strong and bitter Vietnamese Coffee! What caught my eye on the menu was their Bun Cha! I knew I had to try this since I always see people eating this online. Presentation was super nice, you get a bowl of warm fish sauce that has Hanoi grilled pork and patties with the pickled carrots and papaya in it! You get a side of veggies and vermicelli too and you dunk all those in the bowl of delicious fish sauce and man it was chef kiss* I also ordered some spring rolls too and the peanut sauce was on point! Hands down the best Vietnamese on the North Shore. The beef pho was light and flavourful, the veggie spring rolls were packed full of fresh vegetables including mushrooms, the spring rolls were tasty especially when accompanied by the peanut sauce, and the papaya salad was massive! We received the food quite quickly after ordering which was surprising on a Saturday night at 7pm. There were quite a few tables available and given how quick they are with getting orders out, the turnaround in tables is quick ensuring wait times (if any) are minimal! We were really craving something warm and soupy after a cold day walking in Stanley Park and shopping at Park Royal a few weeks back. Had Wooden Fish bookmarked for ages so dropped by for a casual dinner. Between the two of us, we got the grilled baby octopus, beef carpaccio, salad roll sampler, small bun bo hue for me and small pho dac biet for him. Loved the various condiments they have on the table - the homemade chilli oil got two thumbs up from my boyfriend and the pickled garlic was my favourite! We loved the baby octopus dish. It was a generous portion with lots of pickled veg on the side, perfect for piquing the appetite before the rest of our meal. The beef carpaccio was also a tasty appetizer. Similar to Phnom Penh's famous butter beef, I found Wooden Fish's to be a bit better balanced. The thinner slices were easier to eat and had a nicer texture than the beef in Phnom Penh's take. With the salad roll sampler, you get your choice of three full-sized salad rolls. We hadn't even started digging in when our server noticed one of them wasn't what we'd ordered and she promptly had the kitchen make another order. Great attention to detail and wonderful service! With that being said, we both loved the shrimp cake rolls, which had a great springy texture that contrasted nicely with the refreshing vegetables. We'd originally ordered regular sized noodle soups for both bowls, but our waitress advised against as we'd already ordered quite a bit. I'm glad because we were both honestly pretty full by the time they came. These were both tasty as well but not our favourite in Greater Vancouver. I'm a purist and like the classic pork blood cubes and pork hock in my BBH, so I felt something was lacking. Overall, Wooden Fish is a solid option for Vietnamese eats in West Van and I'd recommend it. Finally made it to Ambleside to try this delicious Vietnamese on Marine Drive. We ordered Saigon fresh roll with shrimp and grilled chicken fresh roll. It was nice to have the chicken option as usually places only have shrimp and/or pork options. The green papaya salad was by far our favorite as it was so flavorful. We both enjoyed this so much! The grilled sablefish (black cod) on dill vermicelli bowl on the other hand was disappointing as we had to be careful as there were bones but moreover it lacked flavor, and spice. They had condiments on the table which includes their house sauces including their home made hot sauce which I was tempted to buy. I would go back for that papaya salad! I love that area and the street this is located on and parking spots are available. Even though they have a sister location on W Broadway, it does not compare and is not nearly as good. read more

Sat outside on a lovely day - greeted almost immediately by friendly staff - cute little patio table but I wouldn't recommend sitting out front. I tried the sangria and one other drink; I can't remember the name of but it had tequila and egg whites (not a margarita). The sangria was lovely with the guava but I wouldn't order the tequila drink again. I love the cucumber infused water. The food is delicious! I had two salad rolls, one prawn and one shrimp cake, and my boyfriend had chicken skewers. The prawn salad rolls had the perfect amount of cilantro. I ordered the octopus as well but they had cuttlefish which I would not recommend - I love cuttlefish but it has to be cooked properly and some pieces were perfectly cooked while others were impossibly chewy. Came to West Van to check out a nearby music shop for a Gemeinhardt sterling silver professional flute with Crusader head joint. Didn't find what I was looking for, so I went across and down the street eastward and found this Vietnamese eatery. It is clean and bright, albeit a bit noisy. The food, though, was a bit meh for the high price. I ordered Hanoi beef pho and a spring roll. After having lived and worked in north Vietnam for about a year, I would say it is not really authentic Vietnamese pho. Maybe it is more like Can Tho food??? The spring roll was not bad, but it was a little bit pricey. The beef pho was rather disappointing. There wasn't enough green onion as it should have and the broth was so bland. I could not believe that it is $20 a bowl for that. The service, though, was pretty good and attentive. I found that because of the price and the quality of the food this might be the last time I come here. I suppose that comes with an average restaurant located in a wealthy neighbourhood. I stumbled upon this place on my way to 7-11 (across the street) and needless to say, I never did make it there after all. I saw the menu on the window and it looked different from the typical hole in the wall mom and pop pho place. The prices were more upmarket and there were more interesting dishes. There was some thought put into the interior design and it was a welcoming place. I had been craving grilled octopus (Greek style -- still searching for it here) and ordered it since it was on the menu. While it was good, they were not as expected as they were the baby octopus. Great with any of the hot sauces provided. The staff recommended the special for the weekend -- a fish noodle soup. Every weekend has different special. Check with the staff. The fish noodle soup was so good! It took me back to Asia with the deep fried fish (tilapia) and fish cake (tasted like omelette, maybe it was coated with egg and deep fried). The broth was tangy and light with tomatoes and dill and other herbs. I could taste the freshness and quality of the dish. At $19, it was steep but at least it was delicious. I love the house made hot sauces. They were all very good. The service was excellent too. My water glass was refilled without me asking, and the staff even brought a bottle to my table. The weather was so hot that I just downed the entire glass of water after being seated. The place seemed to have many regulars and I overheard the staff telling some customers who came in they were going to call them to inform them of the special. How's that for service? This place is a nice change from the usual ubiquitous pho restaurants in the lower mainland. I will want to try other dishes here next time. read more

This restaurant offers a very innovative menu, with many fusion dishes in addition to traditional Vietnamese food. I ordered several special dishes but they came out to be a hit or miss. The foie gras fried rice was an unique offering that I haven't seen elsewhere. The foie gras itself was cooked to a nice level and drizzled with a slightly sweet and tangy sauce that complemented its heaviness. The rice itself, however, lacked any flavor despite its color, making the dish a bit bland since there is only a small piece of foie gras. The sablefish suffered from the same problem of blandness too, having a nice presentation but lacking any tastes of "miso". The fish itself was also a bit hard and dry. We also got some staple dishes including the papaya salad and chicken & shrimp skewers. Both came out to be solid but there wasn't anything too special. This restaurant had a modern vibe and we were passing by this area for Vietnamese food. I was told to be skeptical of Vietnamese restaurants without the word "pho" in the name. . I was also skeptical as the restaurant was near empty when we arrive at 7 but it was a weekday and it did fill up quickly after. The dishware was cute and cultural. First docked star is no complimentary tea! Maybe I've been spoiled but we were instead offered the drink menu to have tea by the pot for $3.50 each. Second docked star was my shaken beef ( Luc Lac) dish was salty x 200 and there was not much other flavours - it tasted like salt and water. It wasn't very gravy-like and the sauce was thin. The presentation of spring rolls were cut in a unique way but made it a little hard to dip in the sauce. Great beef in the dish but an extra $7 for more Beef. Partner commented there was no ' house special' pho as many other places have. Good points: Salad portion of my dish was a good amount and fresh. The pickled beets/ cabbage was delish ! The added beef was AAA grade and you could tell. I liked that they used rice paper as the wrapping for the spring rolls to give it an extra crispiness. Delicious surprise we stumbled upon in west Van! The grilled octopus was so good! Succulent, moist, had good char, good portion and amazing flavor. Picked vegetables that accompanied it was delicious with the spicy sauce it came with. It had a kick! So good. The chicken vermicelli bowl was also a win. I believe most of the review has to be from the local peoples. We came here looking for a pho shop! I'm right away we figured it was northern side viet food. We knew it would taste a little different. I hate the lobster spring roll and bun Bo hue! Everyone else had pho with a side of bone marrow. Food was served lobster spring roll was good! Everything else was nasty! The bone marrow was pretty much tendon soup. No bone or the marrow lol Ambience is busy! They were exceedingly rude when asked if they had sirracha and hoisin sauce. I'm sure they felt offended but if they didn't offer it. They could of kindly let us know That they don't offer that. They didn't offer side of bean sprout or basil leaf like most pho place. Stumbled upon this restaurant after a hike in North Van, and so glad we did. We dined on the small patio outside which was nice and shaded. The service here was amazing! She always came to check up on us, and was genuinely kind. She also gave us recommendations of the most popular dishes - and they ended up being perfect. We started off with the papaya salad, which isn't made spicy, but comes with an abundance of hot sauce; you'll have 3 to choose from. Next we had the octopus which I highly recommend! It was grilled & charred to perfection and cut up into bite-sized pieces. The spring rolls were nice and crispy, and the wrapper portion wasn't too thick, so you could really enjoy the filling. (Tip: mix the fish sauce with one of their hot sauces for an extra kick) We split a couple of the mains ~ lemongrass chicken and beef luc lac and both were fresh, delicious and pretty large portions as well. This restaurant really surprised me with how good it is! We stopped by at random because it was on the way back from Squamish and everyone was craving Vietnamese food. For 3 people to share we got: pho Hanoi, spring rolls, foie gras fried rice and chicken wings. Along with the food came 4 different house-made hot sauces that were excellent. Our favourite was the garlic hot sauce but they were all really good. The pho was our favourite dish. The broth was so flavourful and beefy, and I didn't miss the accompaniments that I'm used to getting when I order it at other restaurants. The spring rolls were crunchy but soft on the inside and the chicken wings were excellent. While we liked the fried rice, we thought the other dishes were far better. I like reviewing newer restaurants in hopes that it will help to boost their business but I think the Wooden Fish doesn't need my help. Despite of COVID-19 the restaurant was almost full. We saw multiple take out orders while we were waiting for our food so that is a good sign. The establishment is clean and the waitresses disinfecting the menus our orders were taken. Another good sign they are doing their part to protect themselves and their patrons. All of the waitresses are very courteous and friendly. We ordered Grilled baby octopus which was super delicious. Our second dish is Grilled Lobster and Shrimp skewers on a bed of Saffron Butter rice and a side of salad and vegetable pickles. This dish is spectacular. The presentation is beautiful and full of flavors. Our third dish is Beef Stew. It was really tasty but a bit on the salty side. Last but not least their Coconut Creme Brûlée was complimentary because of the overly salty beef stew. All in all, we really enjoyed our dinner. My Vancouverite boyfriend had driven past this place several times and the modern decor caught his eye. I'm visiting from San Jose, California (which has excellent viet food, mind you), so he really wanted to take me here to see what I thought. I was skeptical since we haven't had very great Vietnamese food so far in Vancouver. Every place had been a letdown, until this one. We ordered the: - Nem Nuong - a pork sausage fresh roll (weird since we call them spring rolls in California). This was not bad but could be better - 2.5/5. The sausage was so skimpy, probably 10% veggies, 80% vermicelli noodles, and only a little strip of the sausage. I've had amazing nem nuong before in SoCal so this was nothing special to me. - Bun Cha - a vermicelli and meatball dish that came with some fried egg rolls. Nothing like what I expected. The meatball and grilled pork were presented in the bowl of fish sauce which initially threw me off - not used to it being presented that way. This was amazing! 4.5/5. The presentation was stunning, the portion was outstanding, and you got a little bit of everything--vermicelli, lots of veggies, meatball, fried roll, and grilled pork. The only con was that the fish sauce was a little too watery and less flavorful than we would've liked. - Cari Ga - Chicken curry - I love chicken curry but have mostly had my mom's. This didn't come close but it was pretty good. (can't beat mom's). 3/5 Caveat: we had to eat this the following day because the waitress had forgotten to punch in this part of our order. By the time we got around to asking them about it, we were full from the other two dishes so we asked to have it boxed. I did appreciate that they were honest about what happened and they even threw in a little dessert for the mix-up. The restaurant itself was very clean (including the bathroom). However, it was a small place with just about 7 tables for 4. I noticed the majority of people there got the Pho, so maybe that's the thing to order there? Over two meals, we had the beef carpaccio, Hanoi fresh roll, beef pho, bun cha, chicken pho, and bun bo hue. Beef carpaccio is better than Phnom Penh's in my opinion. Roll wasn't that exciting but the peanut sauce was delicious. Both phos were so good, but beef was definitely better - the chicken pieces were a bit rough. Mediocre Vietnamese food for high price. We went there and had ordered the deep fried spring roll, spicy chicken wings, and beef broth noodle soup. The spring roll was best I had, very thin and crispy, but only 3 pieces cut in halves for $9. The chicken wings' flavour is okay but $12 for tiny 6 pieces. The beef noodle soup costs $14, uses wide noodle instead of the traditional Vietnamese noodle, and broth had a sour taste. The extra egg of $1.5 was simply a raw egg being cracked in. The best Asian restaurant in the area! Try to arrive just before lunch, otherwise you could be waiting. I didn't feel comfortable sitting so close to the next table. Definitely not 6 feet apart. As soon as we walked in, the smell of the food made us hungrier. They offer appetizers, salads, fresh salad rolls, noodle soup dishes, BBQ skewers, and rice/vermicelli bowls. We ordered the Beef Pho noodle soup and Bun Cha. The Beef Pho was flavourful especially the broth (warms your insides on a cold, rainy day) and the bun cha was delish. It came with 2 grilled pork meatballs, 2 salad rolls and a tasty broth for the vermicelli noodles. The ambiance is modern with a varied menu from fish to foie gras to suit the variety of diners. You can order add-ons to your meal. We both enjoyed our choices and found both dishes flavourful. It's not your standard Vietnamese restaurant as most dishes were different and homemade. A great place to hangout on a rainy day or if you have a hankering for good Vietnamese food. They're open M-S from 11 am to 9 pm. You can dine in or take out. Service was prompt and courteous. It didn't take long for our dishes to arrive. They sell homemade chili sauce and frozen broth for takeout. There's complimentary parking on the street. First things first, Wooden Fish has truly exceptional service - the kind that goes above and beyond to leave you beaming. More on that later! My friends and I were quickly seated and received our food not too long after. Had I been hungrier, I would've ordered either of my friends' dishes - Grilled Sablefish on Dill / Ca Nuong ($29) or Hanoi Beef Noodle Soup / Pho Hanoi ($15). The portions were huge. For the Sablefish, it was literally grilled before our very eyes and served on top of a generous portion of greens and vermicelli. It was so incredibly buttery. For the Pho, there was even a FREE one time noodle refill! Unheard of and unbelievable. As I stared longingly at my friends' dishes, I munched on my Crispy Spring Rolls / Cha Gio Man ($9) and sipped on my Iced Vietnamese Dripping Coffee ($6). The Spring Rolls were delightfully crisp with a tender pork filling. The addition of the pickled sides was a nice surprise because they really brightened up the dish with its acidity. As for the Iced Coffee, it was a no brainer that it would be delicious and velvety smooth. And now, for the service! Our server was a delight - she chatted with us as she expertly grilled the fish; happily shared her dish recommendations, provided us with a full pitcher of water; checked on our meal satisfaction; and even remembered another patron's food allergies and his birthday! She was just so genuine and personable, and really made a lasting impression on all of us. Thank you, Wooden Fish, for the excellent food and service!
