A most stunning tasting experience, I had here at Phnom Penh in Chinatown. PP has been on my radar for some time & I finally made it here. PP has been going strong since 1985 - not an easy achievement in the restaurant industry. PP has that older type restaurant feel inside, but it is very lively as waiters fly by with orders to deliver to tables. Yelpies, order these three items & the say less while you wait for them. Butter Beef (Thinly sliced rare beef) Garlic Wings (heavy on the garlic - FYI) Filet Beef Luc Lac (Tender stir-fried beef) I had a Vietnamese coffee, but it was lame. I've had better elsewhere. The taste of these dishes is orgasmic. I didn't notice nor feel a high sodium content but perhaps maybe a hint of MSG. Regardless, there's a reason why PP has won several awards year after year, including the prestigious - Michelin. Get here ASAP & find out why PP continues to impress foody lovers from everywhere. Always seeing people line up at the door shows that this restaurant truly has something special . When we finally got our table, the food exceeded our expectations. The chicken wings should be called crack wings HIGHLY addictive. The deep-fried squid is prepared the same way as the chicken wings, and the calamari was amazingly tender. The Butter beef was simply fantastic, with flavors that balanced sweetness and saltiness perfectly, topped with delicious accompaniments. My friend tried to go another time and was told the wait would be 2 hrs so def be prepared for that if you're going at peak lunch/dinner time. The Marinated Butter Beef isn't made with butter but with how tender and juicy as it is you'd think it was. Similar to a delicious carpaccio the thin slices mixed with the savory sauce and herbs leave a fresh taste on the palate, not something you can say often with beef. Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg was a fantastic mixture of sweet and savory. It reminds me of a Cambodian version of bulgogi, I enjoyed having this mix of flavors and the vehicle of rice to carry it all home was enjoyable. The Green Papaya Salad was a great example of how generous the dishes are here. A plate full of julienne papaya in a light sauce and served with shrimp and a beef jerky makes this a burst of freshness. Highly enjoyable and a great start and palate cleanser. Phnom Penh Hot and Sour Soup with Fish is so tasty. I didn't think I'd enjoy this but it was a soup filled with different flavors and soft textures. Very comforting on rainy cold days and perfect for sharing. If you're looking for exceptional food that will always be a conversation starter when looking back at the meal, try Phnom Penh. We read so many reviews about this place and had to check it out while visiting Vancouver. There is always a long line so be prepared to wait no matter what time you arrive. The staff is excellent though and really tries to get people served quickly. Despite being packed, the staff navigates well to make sure the food is hot, freshly prepared, and served without losing quality. We of course had to get the butter beef (which is really the main attraction) and the fried chicken wings. Both were amazing as advertised. The beef was tender and served with salty and umami packed sauce. The chicken wings were jumbo sized and crispy from being freshly fried. Make sure to bring a friend because these are pretty decent sized appetizers. We also ordered the noodle platter with pork sausage, shrimp ball, and egg rolls. Maybe I went in with really high expectations because this place is so hyped. We ordered the fried rice, dry egg noodle, and chicken wings. The dry egg noodle was meaty and came with soup -- the pork bone soup was actually really good and probably the highlight of the meal. A small and quaint restaurant situated in Chinatown is your typical family-run business in the MICHELIN Guide. We were able to reserve a table for the 6 of us a week in advance. They charged an 18% tip for reserving; which is a normal tip nowadays anyway. The food and service were quick and in the middle of dinner, they even changed clean plates for us which was a nice service to receive. The food is very authentic and tasty. PRO TIP: If you're planning on visiting during opening, I would be there 10/15 minutes before doors open- my family and I came right at 11 and there was already a line. The sauce and onion/garlic topping for the beef butter pairs very well with meat. This dish also comes with a clear pork-based broth with a chunk of meat. As for the chicken wings, my family and I loved them. The batter is definitely on the lighter side and is fried to perfection. They are already seasoned with simple salt and pepper and if you want a citrusy kick, there's some lemon/pepper sauce on the side. The chicken wing was fresh, crispy, savory, and moist. As for the other dishes, we thoroughly enjoyed the beef luc lac! The dish is sweet/savory and went perfectly with the egg on top. Although everything we ordered was fantastic, my personal favorite (besides the wings) was the canh chua tom! This was perfect for the cold weather. For food, food we got the 2 most popular dishes. Butter Beef 4.5/5 This dish is good, has a deep savory sweet flavor and the raw beef texture I loved. It didn't feel dirty or off putting at all. The sauce is what made this dish great. The bits of fried onion on top was a great combination. I enjoyed this dish. Chicken Wings 3.5/5 I had high expectations for the wings and because I haven't had fried chicken in a while but these wings were barely crispy. I wanted to get that nice crunch into the bite but was disappointed. Seasoning wise, it's good, nothing crazy or special. But paired with the lemon sauce, it was awesome. The beef filet was a little disappointing for me because I felt like it was missing something. Very solid Vietnamese/Cambodia food. My wife and I heard many great reviews about the butter beef and the chicken wings, so when we visited Vancouver, we had to try it. It did not disappoint. The butter beef was amazing. The beef was very tender and it seemed to be dressed with a soy based sauce, where usually when I order this dish at other restaurants it's a clear fish sauce based sauce. There's some bright acidity to cut some of the saltiness topped with fried garlic for texture and herbs for freshness. We ordered a small order of chicken wings and felt like it was a pretty generous portion for two people. We saw some other tables order the large, and felt like it could easily feed 4-6 people. Save the sauce and mix it with other carby dishes to elevate those dishes as well Dry rice noodles: delicious with a great sauce. Must have. Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg: my second favourite dish. Make sure to mix in the sauce they provide to give this a tangy depth of flavour. Excellent mix with the creaminess of the running fried egg and the beef. Phnom Penh Deep-fried Chicken Wings: Delicious unique flavour. I don't know how to describe it. But it's not available anywhere else. Try it and have it with the sauce. Trieu Chau Fried Oyster Cake: the only miss for me. It's standard to what can be found in chinese restaurants that serve this. Also it's too oily but that's how the dish is. Service is very friendly and helpful. They stopped by a few times to give us tips on how to eat the food to make sure we got the best experience. It is a wonderful combination of paper thin sliced rare beef filet, mixed with a ton of fresh cilantro and fried garlic in their special sauce. So darn yummy! Why can't any NYC restaurant make a decent version of this dish? I always get two of these plates for our group of six to eight because there isn't enough to go around. We also typically order the Cambodian Dry Noodles, Fried Chicken Wings, Bo Luc Luc (garlic beef), Garlic Beef Filet cubes (upgraded Bo Luc Luc), and Cha Gio Tieu Chau (deep fried crab rolls). If those are not your jam, the menu has over 100 items to choose from. Fyi, I would stay away from the high ticket items because I don't believe it's their strength. Two examples of what I am talking about is the Fried Dungeness Crab with Black Pepper Sauce and the Salt & Pepper Fried Dungeness Crab. Not bad by any means, just not worth the price. Warning! WOW. I did not think this place was going to be this good. We first tried to come the day we landed but were told that there was going to be a 1.5-2 hour wait. I was highly suspicious because there was no one else waiting outside but when we came back the next day for lunch (9 minutes after they had just opened) we were told that there would be a 45 minute wait. I had to make time to come to this restaurant because the last time I was in BC I was blown away by their "Butter Beef" and fried chicken! I've heard so much about this restaurant and finally went under a reservation with a group of six friends. Just a note that if one person is not able to show up, the reservation will be canceled as the minimum party size is 6 (we had to reschedule due to this policy). The restaurant was very busy when we went and I think for people going without reservations, wait times can be up to an hour! BUT I get these every visit, once for takeout, and have yet to complain about anything. Butter Beef - love the look, beef is tender, and sauce is refreshingly sour with enough umami. I must say it's not my type of dish, but I see the appeal. Oyster Pancake - my mom is obsessed and I've grown to love it too. First time in Vancouver, and the spot that came highly recommended was Phnom Penh, and TLDR - definitely worth the visit and try! Let's start with the chicken wings (which they are famous for). These had to be some of the tastiest wings I've had in a long time. Crunchy, juicy, and that vinegar salt/pepper sauce for dipping was unreal. We got a small order but regretted not ordering more. My second favorite dish was the butter beef (carpaacio). So much flavor , meat was so tender, I'd get this every time I come here as well. The sautéed water spinach was super good as well, lots of garlic, but it's a big serving for 2 people. Better for bigger groups I think. We also got their Cambodian style pho - this one was ok, but don't think I'd order again. Same thing with their fried Vietnamese rolls, these weren't great and wish we ordered something else. We tried going for dinner around 6pm, and it was a couple of hour wait. So we came back the following day for a late lunch and the wait was about an hour. We gave our name, and they'll text you when the table is ready, which is nice because we just waited in the car while we waited for the table. Overall, definitely a spot I'd eat again and would recommend without a doubt. As long as you are cool with waiting, I think that'll help manage expectations. read more

Literally the only place you should dine at in Chinatown hence there is also a wait. We waited around 30 minutes - they will text you - Monday around noon time. We ordered their two popular items plus a shrimp ball with egg noodle soup + their dry noodles. Their butter beef (doesn't taste like butter) and their fried chicken was a must. One of our better meals. We finished everything! Their noodles weren't bad. We got it for our toddler. She loved the bone broth soup that came with the dry noodles. Bathrooms in the back. Clean for a Chinese place - they speak Cantonese here. Street parking or public transportation. Unfortunately, Chinatown is ghetto so there isn't much to do while you wait for your table. read more

We shared: Marinated Butter Beef Phnom Penh Chicken Wings Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang - Rice noodles în soup with prawns, pork, pork innards, ground pork, dried shrimp Butter Beef did not taste buttery like it's name which I'm relieved but it's very sweet and incredibly tender. Hủ Tiếu Nam Vang was a light, comforting bowl of noodle soup. The pork and prawns weren't dry. Chicken wings were perfectly crispy and seasoned. Very happy with the portion sizes of all these dishes. No issues with service. Highly recommend you visit in middle of afternoon when wait is not as crazy. This Vancouver institution is worth the visit. read more

Fried chicken wings. Only reason we walk all the way from the West End to this part of the city. The neighborhood to get to this restaurant may be full of homeless and/or drug addicts so be careful. Service is good and wings are yummy. However, the rice dishes are just ok. We've had the Bo luc lac, which is not cubed, and quite odd to me as all the pictures on the internet shows this rice dish as having beef in cubed shapes. Restaurant is pretty big so even if there is a wait, it's not too bad. I like how they have outlets so we can charge our phones while eating. Several times we have visited in spring (March) & the restaurant was closed until early to mid-April for their annual holiday closure. read more
