A blend of Vietnamese Cambodian flavours, Phnom Penh serves delicious food that you shouldn't skip! There's a reason this place is on all the must try lists in Vancouver. The restaurant gets busy everyday so you may have to put your name on a waitlist during prime meal times but it's worth the wait. The restaurant is unassuming but is bustling with servers bringing in delicious dishes to the large family tables around the restaurant. Perfect setting to enjoy the food here. My favourite dishes here are the Phnom Penh Chicken Wings (crispy and such good flavour), the marinated Butter beef (the sauce is to die for!) and you can't go wrong with their pho (broth is clear and flavourful). I'm just drooling thinking about my meals here! Whenever I'm in Vancouver, I always ask to go back to try more dishes along with my go to's! read more

There's usually a wait time of at least 15-30 minutes for a table here. Or they could tell you a wait time of 2+ hours but it may end up faster where you will get a text message for a table after an hour or so. Tip for visitor: leave your name and mobile number then plan an hour of activities nearby like take quick photos along Pender Street or stroll through Chinatown and head back when you get their text...for us, we simply enjoyed the wait time by grabbing a drink at the speakeasy bar across the street. This is a popular choice for locals to dine in large groups of 10 or more as it's a great way to get a taste of everything from their diverse menu AND you can make a reservation to avoid the wait for a table. This may be a restaurant where you feel enticed to sampling at least three items or more and IMO, it's very easy to over-order. For example, I find their portion sizes of 3 dishes would be adequate portions to share for parties of 4 adults, unless you are famished and you wanna have takeout for later. Many locals don't enjoy the wait and prefer to order takeout. Note: wait time for takeout order is likely at least 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the time of day...yup, patience is a good virtue. My recommended summer take out combo: chicken wings and durian shake! Had to try this place in a recent visit to Vancouver. The social media buzz on this place was well deserved. As you check in, our wait was approximately 1 hour. Since we came all this way, why not. Just have a beer at the corner pub, and sure enough you will get the text. You are immediately sat down and you can see the place is full of happy eaters. We were served rather fast and the food started coming in. This place is well worth the reputation I heard of. Phnom Penh had been on my to try list for so so long and I was thrilled to finally try it. Since I made a reservation for a group of 6, we were seated right away and the service was very prompt, especially considering it was busy. Our group shared two entrees and three appetizers which ended up being the right amount as we were all pretty full by the end. The appetizers definitely were the star of the show here as they were all very well seasoned. The marinated beef was doused in sauce and I enjoyed the garlicky cilantro flavour. Both the chicken wings and the fried squid were crispy and paired with a nice tangy sauce, they were very moreish. The entrees (dry two mix noodles and the pho) were good but didn't stand out to me as being much better than other ones I'd tried. I discovered this place on TikTok, and it's famous for its butter beef - which, by the way, is raw and very similar to carpaccio. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and tasted so homemade! We tried the grass jelly coconut milk drink, fried chicken wings, butter beef, salt and pepper squid, and Banh cuon, and every dish was a hit. Honestly, there were so many other things I wanted to try, but my stomach just couldn't handle it all! Even though it was a rainy Saturday, parking wasn't a hassle at all. Expect about a 30-40 minute wait, but the area is full of cute bookstores and tea shops, so there's plenty to browse while you wait. All the awards and the hour long wait is very much worth it (even on a random Thursday at 4 pm - this place is constantly busy) The Butter beef is SO addicting. Even my parents who were skeptical about trying a dish with raw beef wanted to get another order because of how unique and amazing this dish was! A must try if you like bold and savory flavors. I used to visit Phnom Penh about once every four months because their food is unique and delicious (stopped going so often recently). Compared to a couple years ago, I don't think the chicken wings are as good as they used to be. They used to add a lot more garlic and scallions to the wings which made the dish smell rich. Now, I'm lucky if I can get a small teaspoon of aromatics. The chicken wings and dipping sauce are still a great combination, but it feels like the dish isn't the same anymore. I usually get the same two dishes (wings and butter beef) and add in a couple other items to explore their menu. I would recommend their oyster pancake as that was worth its price. This place lives up to it's hype! A lot of solid dishes, we enjoyed the phnom penh garlic squid, garlic chicken wings, and spare ribs. The squid was probably our favorite. The dried egg noodles were really good and the accompany soup is really good on a cold day. The bo luc lac wasn't my favorite, it was really saucy and also chopped up beef. I prefer the cubes and more texture to the meat. We tried the pea vines and the lotus room stems for vegetables and would probably pass on both. Phnom Penh is a well-loved Cambodian-Chinese restaurant, and their famous fried chicken wings absolutely live up to the hype--crispy, loaded with garlic, and hands down the best wings I've ever had! We also tried the fried shrimp prepared the same way, which were tasty, but the wings were the true star. We shared the beef Bo Luc Lac as well, though it was just okay in comparison. I was kind of surprised the beef is sliced and not cubed as previous Bo Luc Lac we've had. But it was nice to have some rice to go with our chicken wings and shrimps. A veggie dish might have balanced things out, but with just the two of us, three entrees were already plenty. It was a chilly night in lovely Vancouver. My partner and I had just landed and after checking into our hotel we were famished. So, we had one place in mind for our first meal. This place was Phnom Penh and it was one of the greatest choices we made during this whole trip. When we first joined the waitlist, we were told an hour, so an hour later we came back and were seated. To join the waitlist here, you must go in and tell the host in person. The wait is well worth it here though. We ordered what everyone else recommends, the Fried Chicken Wings and the Butter Beef(carpaccio). On top of those dishes we got the Fried Squid and Taro Cake with Egg. From the very first bite of the Butter Beef, I knew this place was good. The cuts of beef were tender and the flavors were bright and punchy. The first bite of the chicken wings were also mind blowing. The chickens are cooked just right, being crispy outside and juicy inside. The flavors in the seasoning were also perfect. They perfectly balance the line of being too seasoned in a specific flavor while also having everything else. I know that was confusing, but let me explain. Salt for example. The chicken almost seemed too salty but the moment it tasted a little too salty, the sugar would come in as well, so it was never really too salty. This balance is hard to achieve and the perfectly cooked chicken is a great vessel. The other dishes were also so good in the same ways, so this was genuinely the perfect start to our trip. Exploring the Chinatown area while waiting for your table could also be really fun. read more

Cambodian restaurants are pretty rare in general, so we had to stop by this joint when we were in Vancouver (grew up with a lotta Cambodians). Not pictured is the chicken wings and that was probably the best thing we ordered, but everything was pretty solid! Not the best Cambodian food I've ever had, but I appreciated the variety and the fact that these options were even available. We had 4 adults and a 14 month old, and it was just enough food for all of us that we were satisfied and had no leftovers. Although I would had liked to order another dish. Every dish we tried was good and we all enjoyed every item we ordered. The fired rice was not greasy and very tasty. The chicken wings were super crispy and tasty! Very enjoyable. The butter was was way better than it looked!! I knew what we were ordering, but I think my group was a little weary when they saw the rare beef. The server was very helpful. He came over and mixed it and showed us how to eat it... and it was delicious!!! Incredible tender and tasty! I think we could had ordered 2 of these and we would still finish it. Blink and you'll miss the muted black-red-and-white awning with a grainy, grey-toned photo of Phnom Penh (Cambodia's capital city). But on this otherwise sleepy block, parking feels like a contact sport, and foot traffic all seems directed to this singular entity. Even on weekdays, expect the no-reservations dinner queue to be a beast -- I watched the restaurant cut off its ever-growing queue more than an hour prior to closing hour. It should come as no surprise, then, that Phnom Penh has been awarded Bib Gourmand recognition by the Michelin Guide. Inside, the walls up front are heavily decorated with countless Phnom Penh-centric plaques, certificates, and news articles. The vibes are comfortable and casual like a run-of-the-mill neighborhood joint, but the crowd is impressive. Laminated wood tables are pressed up against the shiplapped walls all the way back to the short bar at the far end of the space. A few large, Lazy Susan-decked tables take up the middle of the room. The off-white walls are decorated with Cambodian and Vietnamese cultural pieces, and bright light shines down from the garish chandeliers. Chinese language pop is drowned out by the din of chatter. My partner and I arrived for an early weekday dinner, and we faced a short queue for a table. We began our meal with the signature #71 Marinated Thit Bo (butter beef). The frisbee-sized sheet of tender, lightly-cooked beef was sprinkled with cilantro, fried garlic, and pineapple-based house sauce, culminating in an intensely tangy treat. Meanwhile, the #78 Canh Ga Lan Bot (Vietnamese fried chicken wings) were battered and fried to a crisp, seasoned heavily with salt, pepper, and sugar. These tasty morsels would have been plenty enjoyable alone, but the eyebrow-raisingly tart lemon-and-pepper sauce brought the wings to another level. Lastly, the tender #87 Bo Luc Lac (shaken beef) was doused in a thick, sweet-and-savory gravy and served atop a diminutive layer of lettuce leaves. Admittedly, the sauce fell flat relative to our other two plates, and Phnom Penh's rendition of shaken beef was only average. The service was brusquely efficient, and our total worked out to just above $70 (after tax and tip). While the shaken beef dipped into the good-not-great range, our other 2 dishes were equal parts unique and delicious. As such, I can understand why Phnom Penh commands a strong hold over this block of Chinatown, and I, too, would recommend paying them a visit. read more

I ordered the chicken wings and beef stew along with a cold beer to wash it down. Both of what I ordered was so darn good.
