the Beef broth is very powerful and even without adding anything extra, has a great flavor itself. The staff make it very comfortable, while also sharing a meal together at another table close by. Pho Japolo never fails me when I crave for either a piping hot, delicious bowl of pho or a the vermicelli bowl. Don't skip the shrimp on sugarcane and their crispy spring rolls! They're absolutely delicious! North Van location's staff are always courteous and attentive. Parking can be iffy sometimes when they're busy. The interior is dated but you come for the food. The crew had a craving for Pho on a Saturday afternoon. Looked up reviews in the area and Pho Japolo looked like a good option for us. The table had Rare Beef Pho, a Pork rice dish & a prawn salad roll. First impressions of the place was ok. Looks a little rundown, but the table was visibly just clean (still damp but dried as we sat) Staff was knowledgeable about its menu. Parking is available out front, however, not in abundance. Seems that there is an option to park at the motel next door if you register your plate number with the restaurant. Location is just before the onramp to the Lionsgate Bridge. We used access from the sidestreets in the back which Google Maps wasn't aware of. Food: the tea is excellent. I appreciate a good tea and this was about the best I've had in a while. Rare Beef Pho * Pho broth was nice, but I suspect MSG as I had a reaction. I should have asked. It's been so long since I've been exposed so it's become rare I even ask (that's on me). The noodle in the Pho was cooked perfectly. The rare Beef was good. The prawn salad roll was good. Peanut sauce nice. Pork dish with spring roll was tasty. My lunch buddy said it could have used a more generous serving of pork, but was ok. 3/5 stars because 2 of us felt unwell immediately after our meal. Nothing serious, but notable. A dive of a Pho restaurant in North Van. I'm in! Take a trip back in time in this 'original condition' restaurant. Marvel at the vintage decor and imagine the wild stories that have been told at the bar in this place. Mysteriously taped air vents. Carpet! A vast expanse of carpet in the dining room! How do they keep that clean? Who knows! Who cares! Watch the wait staff waltz around. "Excuse me! Hot soup! Hot soup!" they sing as they deliver huge steaming bowls of pho to hungry customers. Bring your kids. Bring your grandmother. You don't need to dress up. Just park out back and walk in, and they'll take your order in 3 minutes flat. Gave this place a few more shots, but besides it being tricky to get into the parking lot especially during rush hour and lack of parking, we found the food is no longer worth the hassle and rising price point (unless you're really craving some pho and want a break amidst traffic hour). The last time we went, the place was busy but we got seated immediately. We got an order of spring rolls, a chicken bahn mi and the Dry Cambodian style noodles. My friend had been looking forward to these noodles after a day on the slopes, but was disappointed by the quality and taste, as it wasn't the same as he was used to. Bahn mi and spring rolls were a little on the bland side, and they came well after the noodles were half done - I almost wondered if they forgot the order - but the sauces there are good and helped a bit. A nice aspect is that there is a TV in there to watch the game or other things as you wait for your food and take a break from traffic. read more

The portion is pretty big and is value of money. The food is standard. It is not the most delicious lemongrass chicken but it is still decent. The spring roll is slightly better though it is a bit on the skinny side. The service is average and substitution or changes to the dish is not allowed. If you are driving along Capilano Road after visiting Grouse Mountain or Capilano Suspension Bridge, it is convenient to get to. It is at Capilano and Marine Drive, right next to Denny's. After spending most of the day at the Capilano Suspension Bridge, we were craving a full meal and didn't want to pay for overpriced food at the Park. Pho Japolo is a walking distance from the hotel we were staying at, so we decided to give it a try. Food quality: personally I like the menu choices of the one located around lougheed highway. I mean if you are around the area and just finished the grouse grind a nice bowl of pho would be so good. If you are new to eating pho order these main classic dishes Pho ga Spring rolls Pho tai but I added tendon Salad rolls Inside is a little outdated but food is still good. Best pho on the north shore and great service. I got the vegetarian pho with added tofu and it was well priced and delicious. I LOVED the broth - it was so flavourful. I also forgot my purse and called them and they had been waiting for my call. I returned and they gave it to me! It was really sweet that they remembered who I was. Visiting Vancouver, saw this close by to our hotel, kids ordered kids chicken pho husband had the #8 pho chicken, chicken ball and quail eggs (but it only cane with one egg), I had the Cambodian style pho. Generous with their veggie garnish, also fresh. Good lean slices of chicken in all the pho. Quail egg was good. Cambodian pho was flavorful, but very salty and had definite MSG in it. My tongue is a bit swollen feeling from salt overload, but I would come back another day and try their vermicelli. Overall grateful they are nearby! Went back 3 nights later for dinner and tried their vermicelli with prawns and grilled pork. So good! This is what you order here. Generous portions, well seasoned and tasty. First time trying this place. I was in the area and was craving for Vietnamese noodles. It's not the best I've had. It was a little pricey than other similar places I've been to. Why I gave this rating is because our server was not good at taking orders. I ordered the #8 "small" chicken noodle soup (pointed on the menu to her), but I received the #18 "large" house special instead. I would've just let it be if I wasn't allergic to beef. She didn't even apologize. I was having lunch with two other people. She didn't write down our order nor confirmed it. She finally brought me the right dish, but it looked like it was a large instead of small. When we paid, it indeed was a large (as I couldn't finish everything like I usually do). Pho Japolo is one of my favourite Vietnamese chains in the Vancouver area. Like their other locations, I find the flavour and depth of the broth here exceptional. The meat is also quite fresh and high quality. The restaurant is clean and comfortable with screens playing sports and friendly service. The dish I usually order is the bun bo hue with an extra order of side noodles. Their parking lot is quite small but if the spots run out, you can park in the neighbouring hotel (just make sure to register your plate in the restaurant). Vegetarian options are also offered. This is one of the restaurants that I would recommend when people ask for my choices of Pho. read more

I've been going to this place for over 16+ years. With most recent visit, the interior and vibe is still the same but food was so-so. Broth was bit salty, but okay. Portion is definitely much smaller. I usually eat small in other places (and never finish them), and ordered large so I can share my half with my partner who also ordered large. Pho Japolo looks like a Tiki Bar meets someone's old basement, but the pho is pretty darn good. The waitress was friendly and food came quick. My bowl of pho was a decent size small and the meat was perfectly cooked. The broth was delicious and I ended up drinking everything. From the outside this restaurant doesn't even look open. The inside is cool as in chilly and kind of reminds me of 1970s rec room. Customer service: both waitresses acknowledged we had arrived, they kind of pointed us to our seat. I wouldn't say they were unfriendly but they were not all smiles to see us either. All that aside Pho Japolo is a nice little find. I had the #74 bowl, grilled pork, vermicelli, salad and spring roll...SO GOOD at an excellent price point. It's the closest pho place from west Vancouver just off the lions gate bridge. It's super difficult to access if you've never been before because you can't turn left when you pass it. Technically you can make a uturn but when there's traffic it's nearly impossible. The way to go is actually through the back, you turn left at the first intersection and then left again into a back alley. The signs are not super noticeable so you really need to keep your eye out for the left turn. After you're in the alley you pass the dennys parking and enter through travelodge. Do not park at travelodge!! They tow... Once you manage to find your way to the restaurant you can enjoy some really authentic pho. They don't have a veggie option however which I always like to try. When you're done with your meal you need to pay up front so don't wait around impatiently for the bill haha. read more

Came in on a Sunday around 1:30 and we got seated right away as the restaurant was 75% full. I got a BBH (bun bo hue) and when it came, I was surprised to find the broth not red. It actually wasn't spicy at all which was also surprising. But what REALLY surprised me was how rich in beef flavor their broth was! I just added japeno and chili oil and peppers and limes to achieve the flavor and spice level that I wanted and it tasted great. They gave generous amounts of meat and I really liked the assortment of meats they have in their BBH (brisket, chicken? meat balls, and the vietnamese ham). Would definitely come again! read more

The food is good and there are loads of options just for Pho. Place is small and warm with service being quick; looks like they are light on staff and just 2 ladies doing all the work - from managing the tables to the billing. So don't expect them to show your table and make you comfortable, but the quality of food more than makes up for the service. Will come again. read more

At one point this building must have been a German chalet or restaurant serving schnitzel and bratwurst. Now however, it's a mutation of your expecting Heidi to be serving rice noodles with sheep balls wearing a wimple. This is the second reincarnation of Pho at this location sandwiched into the parking lot between the Travelodge and Denny's. Literally it is in the parking lot. It's previous life as a Pho place was so much better! Now it's just OK with a so so broth and nothing amazing, I am in terrible angst because finding a good Pho place on the North Shore is next to impossible. What can I say about Pho Japolo, don't go unless having a massive Pho craving and any Pho will do. There are your standard 50 types of Pho combinations of fatty brisket, tripe, beef balls, rare beef, etc. Also your standard grilled lemon grass chicken, pork, salad rolls, spring rolls, etc. All standard and OK. I think the grilled meats may be better than their Pho, though they are a Pho place. Something new, I noticed they were advertising Vietnamese sub sandwiches... interesting, have not tried so cannot comment. Pho is all about the broth and their broth is bland. Good broth you finish, this starts to taste boring and stale halfway through. Rice noodles taste like whatever you put them in, ditto for raw meat. This is an odd little place, as aforementioned, the chalet feel, with a Chinese Buddha as you enter, one empty fish tank (on, but empty) and another fish tank with 2 goldfish and a sign that says "do not poke the fish with sharp sticks or bang on the glass" I quickly put away my sharp stick. There are 2 TV screens in the dining area irritatingly either playing soaps or sports, so if a fan of neither sit on the outskirts. This is also a not very well vented place so you do come out smelling like beef broth (based on my previous reviews you may think I have a thing for stinking like broth... but it was just fluke that I happened to stink like beef broth AND pork broth in one week). You do get a good mass of bean sprouts, basil, soy, fish sauce and a collection of chili oil and hot sauce to season your broth with. I think next time I go it may be for the lemongrass chicken, hard to go wrong with lemon grass chicken. Note to the white folk, it is dark meat grilled lemon grass chicken, don't be coming looking for breast meat, head to Brandy's instead. I am sure I will go again when having a massive rice noodle craving and no time to cross the bridge. Decent but not amazing. read more

The pho is always hot and delicious here. The spring rolls are smaller and skinnier than other places but they are so good(they're different here I think there's taro in them). Get a side order of lemon grass chicken here too it's the best out there. I like the staff, ya you seat yourself and may have to flag staff if you need anything but it's a small and intimate dining area so it's easy. This was my first Pho experience. Having seen this place for a number of years, today the timing was just right. Upon walking in, I thought I had walked into a weird ski moving. I headed right away to the bathroom to wash up after hitting golf balls at broken down cars at Seymour Creek. I really should have walked out after I saw the flying ants or similar that were in the bathroom. There were not tons of them, but enough for me to bite my tongue and not tell my wife not to go into the bathrooms. There was 4 of us at the table. The owner was serving us and was very informative of the specials, on the verge of pushy. We ordered 3 small Pho number 1's, a small number 4 and 2 salad rols, 1 deep fried roll (they were on special) and a Pork and Ham Sandwich. The Pho came, the rolls came but were two deep fried and one salad roll, and the sandwich never came. Not super impressive! I enjoyed the pho, the broth was light and tasty, the beef was tender and the noodles were cooked well. If you happen to be driving by on your way to West Van or over the lions gate bridge, you could stop by and try but I wouldn't drive out of my way. read more
