    yang chow fried rice
    Nat L.

i decided to try happy noodle house on davie street after seeing so many positive reviews, including a 4.6 star rating on yelp. i also learned that the chef is formerly from peaceful restaurant, which raised my expectations given peaceful's reputation for hand pulled noodles and northern chinese cuisine. i dropped in at around 4:30 pm and spent a few minutes looking over the menu before deciding on what to order. apparently their wonton soup does not come with noodles, which caught me slightly off guard. a picture prominently featuring a roast chicken was unavailable, and the lamb skewers are available but served without skewers. i ordered takeout and chose the yang chow fried rice and the wonton soup. it didn't take long for the food to be cooked. it looked and smelled appetizing, which made me feel optimistic. the yang chow fried rice appeared colourful and hearty, with shrimp, bbq pork, scrambled egg, peas, carrots, corn, and green onions. the portion was generous, and the rice grains were nicely separated. while it was filling, the bbq pork wasn't properly bbq'd, flavour was milder than expected and slightly oily, lacking the depth we personally prefer. the wonton soup came with several plump wontons in a clear broth, topped with green onions and a piece of fried tofu. the wrappers were soft, and the filling was missing shrimp and had a lot of mystery fillers. the broth was light and subtle, which may appeal to those who enjoy a more delicate flavour profile. for our tastes, however, it felt somewhat underseasoned. overall, i can understand why this restaurant has built a loyal neighbourhood following, especially for its fresh noodles and good value. however, we had hoped for a bit more depth and boldness in flavour. while our experience did not fully meet our expectations, those who prefer lighter flavours and generous portions may appreciate it more than we did. still on the hunt for truly standout, authentic chinese comfort food in the downtown area.

This place was one of the places that opened on Christmas eve. It was perfect for a rainy day. We ordered beef roll and Lanzhou Beef Noodles. Both were very good and very tasty but also salty for my taste. Payment accepted ApplePay or cash Parking street PayByPhone along Seymour St

Pretty good and prices are excellent for this area. Enough to share. I walk here so don't know much about parking. Service is fine as we order, get our food, water gets refilled, eat, pay, and leave. Busy shop otherwise quiet, not much ambiance.

I passed by this noodle house many times and been curious. We ordered 2 items, Pork ribs soup noodles and tantan noodles The texture of the noodles was excellent and the broth of the pork ribs noodles was great. However the pork ribs were somewhat dried from the cooking process The flavor of tantan noodles and the texture of the noodles was amazing. however the sauce felt a bit greasy and mouthfeel was oily

The short version: we had the xiao-long-bao, the szechuan chili crisp chicken, and the sizzle chili noodles. I would come back to Vancouver just for this meal I have tried a lot of dim sum restaurants across the US west coast and I truly think that Happy Noodle House holds the #1 spot. This quaint little restaurant had give or take 10 tables. It was busy on a Saturday Night (and on Valentine's Day!) with a line out the door, but we fortunately managed to get right in before the crowd hit. All the food was fantastic. The portions were generous, the service was speedy, and everything was booming with flavor. Go support this place!

Xiao long bao soup dumplings. Very nice!

Terrific place to get hand made noodles downtown! Everything made in front of your eyes, and there is nothing that beats a hand pulled noodle. Small but comfortable place with decor that leans more to the functional side than stylish, which I kind of prefer. Friendly service, and very competitive soup dumplings and noodle offerings. We had xiao long bao, noodle drizzled with spicy chili oil, and a wicked cilantro salad that was delightfully hot and cool all at the same time. Chili oil, vinegar, and soy on every table, which is always good sign. Thumbs up!

Beelined it here after getting off a flight with a strong craving for hot noodles. Was an off peak time on a weekday, so we had the small place to ourselves for at least a few minutes. Ordered the hot chili noodles, fried green beans (spicy), and fried pork dumplings. Normally, the two of us would not order nor finish this much food, but we were feeling pretty hungry. To our own surprise, we absolutely devoured everything. The noodles were amazing - great flavor, fresh, and spicy but not TOO spicy. The green beans were great as well. Should we have gotten another spicy dish on top of the noodles? Maybe not, but no regrets as we ate them up. Normally my favorite part, the fried pork dumplings actually were ranked 3rd in this lineup because the other two just shined that much more. Get the noodles if you come here!

This is the best Chinese food downtown imo. There aren't that many Chinese places left that are a walkable distance around downtown, I can tell why this one is always so busy! Their hand pulled noodles are just the best and the soups are so comforting, especially this time of year! I go here regularly because they're just so great, I hope they stay forever! Everyone I bring here comes back time and again. There's something for everyone and you really can't honetong. I've never had anything here that was less than amazing!

Hole in the wall that is perfect for a quick Chinese dinner. Far from pretentious and hits the spot. It's busy and service is quick. You see the kitchen from your seat as they prepare your meal. Overall tasty and affordable; not quite a first date venue.

Incredible dim sum! We got the sizzling chili noodles, XLB, and the Szechuan chicken with chili (star of the show). They were all delicious, can't recommend enough. Will be coming back every time we are in Vancouver.

The tan tan noodles came highly recommended so I got it and I LOVED it. It came with blade cut noodles with bok choy and doused with chili oil. It was incredibly packed with spice and filling. The portion I get for only $15 is so worth it. The 生煎包are so crispy and juicy too even when I ordered takeout and I had to let it sit for a while

I haven't dined-in at this restaurant but I ordered through Uber Eats. I was craving thick noodles so I decided to try this place for a lazy day in! I ordered their sizzling spicy chilli noodles with blade-cut noodles. They were very fast in preparing the order!! The noodles itself were delicious! It came with bok choy, lots of garlic, and chilli oil. The blade-cut noodles were thick but well coated with the mixture. For $15, the portion size was pretty big! I would definitely order from here again or even try going in-person! Their menu is huge and have lots of options.

Visiting Vancouver so We use yelp to find a place to eat.. we were happy with our food and I'm sure there were many other dishes that look yummo... We shared our food with our table neighbors. I think the food was worth the visit. They could dump a few bucks of there profits into the restaurant. I think it is better for takeout and room dinning.. overall happy

With about 9-10 people per table, we were treated to what felt like at least ten courses. There wasn't much time for photos, as conversation and catching up naturally took precedence. The standouts were the seafood fried rice and the green onion lobster and crab stir-fry -- rich, comforting, and generously flavoured, the kind of dishes that quietly anchor a long meal. It was a busy holiday weekend, and the restaurant was packed. Our original 7:00 p.m. reservation was delayed until 8:00 p.m., leaving many of us waiting outside in the cold. Once seated, the pacing felt off, with dishes arriving out of sequence, which gave the meal an oddly disjointed rhythm. A small apology or update from the staff would have been welcome, but none came. Overall, the food was very tasty, and I would consider returning -- particularly to explore more of their seafood offerings.

So mum wanted to show her appreciation for being her chauffeur taking her around to the doctors…read more She took me out for dimsum and with it being in Richmond there is a plethora of choices. She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. Yes come on a date or impress business clients/boss or family celebrations.

I have many Chinese friends in Vancouver, and my last visit to Kirin Richmond was in July 2024…read more This time, it was my birthday, and my friends insisted on treating me to Kirin Richmond once again. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.

New Town Bakery is one of those Chinatown staples that feels like a rite of passage in Vancouver…read more We headed there for breakfast, excited for pastries and a classic bakery experience, and decided to dine in. Once we sat down and were handed the full menu, though, I had a brief moment of panic. The menu is huuuge and varied, plus none of the items I had mentally planned on ordering were on there. We pivoted and ordered pork siu mai, congee, look fun noodles, and a few steamed buns (they're especially known for those). The congee, noodles, and siu mai were all fine--very standard, not particularly memorable. In fairness, they weren't what I came for in the first place, so that probably shaped my expectations. The real standouts were the pork asado siopao and the chicken deluxe (bola bola). Both have Filipino roots, and the siopao especially brought a comforting sense of familiarity--soft, fluffy, and filled with that sweet-savory pork that felt like home. Those alone made the visit worthwhile. They actually have quite a few other Filipino influenced items like hopia and puto which was surprising. Ironically, it was only after we left that I noticed the sign on the window highlighting their most popular items--exactly what first-timers should probably stick to. I had ordered a few pastries to go with the intention of trying them later... and then completely forgot about them, which I'm still a little sad about. Overall, it was a good visit with a clear lesson learned: go in with a game plan and order the hits. It's a beloved Vancouver institution for a reason, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by--just know it's cash only and do a little pre-order research so you can make the most of it. I'd give it more like a 3.5 vs a 4 star, but I'm already planning a redo focused purely on the classics.
