I was looking for a place to have brunch with a friend and stumbled upon Half & Half on Yelp. We were fortunate to arrive in time to avoid the wait as we sat on the counter with a view of the open kitchen and the rest of the dining area. The white-colored walls and tiled floors presented a pristine, airy look. The makeup complemented nicely within the well-lit venue filled with a mix of artificial and natural sunlight. The noise level was high, but the vibe was inclusive with the elderly, couples, hipsters, and families with young children bursting at all corners.
The Salmon Hash ($14) was served in a piping hot skillet filled to the brim with two sunny side up eggs, potatoes, chives, spinach, capers, and hollandaise sauce. The mix of salmon and potatoes were chunky, buttery, and flavorful. Adding to the mix was a handful of spinach and capers that brought a backdrop of sweet and salty olive-like sensibilities to the dish. We asked for one of the eggs to be well done and the other ooey gooey soft and goodie in the middle and they were perfectly executed. We also asked for the hollandaise sauce to be served on the side, and it was custard thick, creamy, and sinfully delicious. The concerts of all the flavors made the hollandaise unnecessary but still much appreciated since I'm a big fan of the sauce.
The Clara Cake ($9.50) arrived with a stack of pancakes piled high and wide adorned with granola on top, fresh raspberries in between, and a load of creamy mascarpone at the core that oozed out at will as I cut into the stack with tremendous ease. The raspberries came with lots of seeds that made it difficult to bite into, but all flavor and fluffy textures made it a wonderful pick. The quality of their pancakes was topnotch so next time I would love to give their Blueberry Pancakes ($8.50) a chance.
Many of the reviewers have complained about their handcrafted coffee, but their Orange Juice ($3.75) was squeezed on site loaded with freshness and spurts of wow factor here and there. The only complaint I had was the Doughnuts ($4.50) that were also known as beignets in St. Louis. They turned out to be fat pieces of Mexican churros embodied with a hint of citrus on the inside and laden with sugar on the golden brown exterior. The churros were soggy and the form and flavor didn't keep very well. I brought them back to the hotel to share with my Mexican friends and they were not impressed.
All was forgiven, as service was attentive, friendly, and personable. We were offered refilled for our drinks and the used dishes were constantly replaced with new ones so the counter was kept clean and comfortable throughout the visit. By this time we were entering their peak hours, but the owner still stopped by to introduce himself and invited us back to try their new dinner menu with a focus on Mexican cuisine.
Fortunately, we didn't have to go through the complaints that were experienced by other reviewers regarding the long wait, expensive coffee, or the lack of service. I do agree that the prices were slightly higher than expected, especially the churros, but the number of wow factors and ginormous portions made the visit worthwhile. As someone who has experienced a lion share of rubbery boring pancakes, I would love to come back again. 4.5 stars for the overall experience. read more
