My friends and I had a lovely afternoon lunch here on a Sunday afternoon. We had been out running errands, and when we were talking about lunch spots, I recommended Cafe Amalia since I had heard so much about it...and let me just say that this spot did not disappoint! When we arrived, there were a few other customers inside, but it was not too busy. After taking some time to review the menu, we placed our orders at the counter, paid and then found a table upstairs to sit at. The food did not take too long before it was brought over to our table and honestly, it looked so colorful, fresh and tasty. We were all very excited to try our meals and, of course, share with one another. Everything we ordered was just so delicious. The salads were freshly made and the sandwich I ordered was honestly so good. I wanted to eat the whole thing, but it was very filling so I had to take half home with me. We finally tried Cafe Amalia in Kirkwood! I have been eying this cafe since it opened a few months ago, but haven't had time to come in. First off, the atmosphere is stunning. I've never really seen a double decker cafe, but this cafe has two separate dining rooms! We opted for the upstairs. It was super clean and modern inside. The service was so amiable and helpful, we really felt at home. You order at the counter but plenty of people come around to ask if you need help. An older gentleman kept asking if we needed anything else, he even grabbed us waters and ketchup! The food was pretty good. I started with an Iced Vanilla Latte and it had such a good flavor. Not too sweet and I could actually taste the coffee. We tried two sandwiches, the Grilled Chicken Gyro and the Olympian Stack Sandwich. My Mom thought her Gyro was good but a tad dry. The house-made tzaziki really helped add some moisture though. I LOVED the Olympian Stack sandwich. The horseradish and roast beef was packed full of flavor. The chicken was cooked perfectly and it was juicy and flavorful. The rest of the salad I would give it 3 stars. The salad portion was pedestrian. Cafe Amalia was such a great experience. The smoked salmon was divine! Honestly some of the best smoked salmon I've ever had. The first bite completely blew me away. The staff was incredible and beyond sweet, and I love supporting a family-owned business. I got the Garden Avocado Egg Sandwich and it wasn't very good at all. The bagel was like a grocery store packaged bagel, the avocado was more like the readymade packaged avocado sauce packets. The egg and tomato was good, but it was not at all worth $15. However, I liked the chocolate chip scone and my iced coffee was alright too. The sweetest spot. If I could wrap the aesthetic of this place up and place it in my home, I would. The cafe is located off of Manchester and parking is tight, but there is extra hidden parking in the grass lot behind the building- so note that before you venture out! You order at the counter, and they have a great selection of breakfast options, and they also have lunch. Espresso menu is wonderful, and a great time to treat yourself to a special drink. The cashier really "sold" the Olympian Stack to my partner with his description of the sandwich. I am cutting back on caffeine so I jumped at the chance to get the Spartan Power Bowl, thinking it might give me energy. We also split a Lemon Orzo Chicken soup, so we could try it. Prices seemed a bit high for some of the items (like the small cups of soup that my friends ordered), but I really did enjoy my gyro to the point that it felt worth every penny. Food was made with fresh ingredients and well-prepared. I loved the chicken gyro. The combination of the grilled flavor and the creamy tzatziki was excellent! It was a bit messy, but kept together with wrapping and a sandwich pick. The fries were good too- done perfectly. While they were not distinctly Greek in flavor (as compared to other places I've been, where they are seasoned more heavily or have feta topping them), this was okay with me because they offered a great balance when combined with the flavors of the gyro. There was a nice selection of canned/bottled drinks for those not in the mood for coffee (though the coffee at other tables looked great and the fall coffee specials sounded amazing). I will have to come back some time for breakfast items and to see what the coffee is like! It seems to be a popular spot! Parking is easier to come by if you get there on the earlier side of lunch. Lots of fresh flowers and simple but aesthetically pleasing decor. I was pleased to see a woman-owned & local business pop up here. Now for the food! I got the cup of lemony chicken orzo soup. It was lemony and yummy, but more broth-y vs. creamy. My biggest bummer was that it did not come with sourdough bread (though on one of the menus pictured on Yelp, it mentions sourdough bread included) :( I was able to try some fries off a friend's plate that were yummy. They liked their gyro they ordered. It's a little pricey for what it is - my cup of soup was $11 but I could have gotten a bowl which was a double portion for $15. Parking is kind of tough as the lot is small and shared. If you can't find a spot in front of Amalia's, you can park near some of the other shops nearby (though double check signage b/c some say parking for their business only) or in their grass lot. It gets busy with parking and foot traffic in the cafe so I'd recommend getting there early if you want to stay for lunch. The website needs updating - when I visited the site to try to get a preview of the menu, it has not yet updated to being open (it says restaurant opening soon). The only thing is I wish there were more parking spaces. Food: I ordered the egg avocado breakfast sandwich on an everything bagel with cold brew. (My friend got the same sandwich with the macha drink). Everything was very aesthetic when it came out, but it was pretty difficult to eat because the tomato kept sliding off of the mashed avocado and the scrambled eggs fell off of the tomato.. Such a beautiful space! This spot has been on my radar to check out for a while and I am so happy I made it! It did take a while to get through the line to order, but the coffee was brought to our table so quickly it made up for it! I recently was able to travel to Greece and fell in love with freddo espresso there. I am SO glad that I have found a great spot here in St Louis for it! Considering how spacious and large the cafe is with two floors, they lack parking space, so keep that in mind if you are coming at peak hours. They have lots of employees, but I think because it's a new cafe, they're still figuring out their system. My friends and I came at a bustling Sunday afternoon, and it was a bit chaotic and lots of confusion. The interior is pretty though, so it's worth the trip. The food tasted fine,but nothing special though. I am Greek and decided to buy two types of Greek cookies to take home, and each cookie is maybe two or three bites and $10 for four cookies ?!?! Perhaps it's the ambience that customers are paying for, and although the place appears high end with new decor, it can be very loud as the ceilings are quite high.
