Songbird is the Dolly Parton of St. Louis breakfast: bigger stage, brighter lights, same voice. I've followed this operation since it was a sandwich pop-up at the Tower Grove Farmers' Market, through the brick-and-mortar in The Grove, and now into its larger home in Tower Grove South. The quality has not wavered once. I ordered what I always order: The Combo (fried eggs, maplewood smoked bacon, cheese, brioche toast), extra egg, extra bacon. Most kitchens treat a fried egg as binary (runny or ruined). Songbird has mastered the middle register: lacy edges with a yolk that stays glossy and intact right up until the first bite. I ordered them over hard, and they came out a bit closer to over medium, but they were just as good as I wanted them to be. The bacon carries real smoke. This is a decadent sandwich, big enough that half of it would make a light breakfast; I wasn't remotely hungry after one, the second half was indulgent. The service made the move too. The hostess still recognizes returning customers, and the bigger room finally lets the dining experience breathe. The service at the table could have been a little warmer as we've had it the past, but it is still professional. I was there with two close college buddies, one of whom declared his latte excellent. I keep meaning to get adventurous with the menu, but it is genuinely hard to find a bacon, egg, and cheese toasted this perfectly, and I'd go twice in one day if given the opportunity. 4.8 A full five arrives the day when I can arrive first thing on a Saturday without a 30 minute wait, honestly, it's hard to get a reservation here because of its popularity. I wanted my toast's jam to be on the side and they said no. It was a thick tasteless brick without the jam. The items are not as traditional for a breakfast spot, and when I asked the server what they were known for she said the drinks.... They also run a tight turnaround time so they will make you feel uncomfortable when its time to clear your table and pay the bill because they will tell you the next reservation is in 5minutes. The plates were all different and my guest who got a sandwich had her food come out in a plastic fry basket instead of the nicer plates. Odd. As I mentioned earlier, they are not kid friendly as they don't have a kids menu or kid friendly items like fruit and pancakes. We ordered a side of avocado and chicken sausage as those were the safest for us. Also there are no changing tables in the restrooms. Accessibility note: the entrance is a giant multi-slope and 1 turn ramp into a cramped lobby. And this bird can sing! I'm late to the intro, but happy to finally check in at the Tower Grove location. Songbird makes great use of its space and should be near the top of your STL brunch list. A reasonably-sized (not-overwhelming) menu, great coffee, delicious cocktails, quick, attentive service, and undeniably delicous food. I took off on a redeye this morning (coffee courtesy of Blueprint), and landed on the Farm Sampler: two scrambled eggs, applewood smoked bacon, sourdough toast, sliced avocado and sauteed shiitake mushrooms. Phenomenal flavors and textures. Toast is typically an afterthought for me, but the buttery crunch of the sourdough has to be spotlighted. The Bee's Knees cocktail was also a wonderfully refreshing prelude to the approaching STL summer. So, it's been a LONG time and a lot has changed. They've moved to a new and bigger location. And I actually got to eat inside the restaurant this time. The food was good, though not great. The ambiance was fine, but loud. The service did NOT measure up though. We had a reservation, but weren't seated until 15-20 minutes after the reservation time. Then, our server was either not good or way overworked. She left after taking a few drink orders, and said she'd be back. Had to flag her down. I think that Songbird suffers from a problem that many businesses have when they scale up: the personal connection is lost, and the food no longer tastes like it is made with love. I was very excited to try them but left knowing I would not return. I waited 40 minutes on a weekday morning for a bar seat for one, standing because all the waiting area seats were taken. The hostess/waitress was very nice when she got to me, but you could tell that the amount of customers was simply too much to handle. Now, this was okay - I should have made a reservation, and it's not the staff's fault they were overwhelmed. However, the service once I sat down was patchy, delayed and distracted. I had to remind different servers of my presence, multiple times. I was willing to overlook this if the food had been fantastic, but unfortunately, their most popular item, the combo breakfast sandwich, was so incredibly heavy. The first bite was crispy, oily and fatty deliciousness, but by the third bite it was simply too rich. The sweet overtone of the honey was lovely but did not cut through the grease. By the time I finished half, I understood why several diners had left the other half uneaten. My personal preference is for a fresh, umami yet balanced sandwich that does not make me feel queasy after finishing it. This was not the sandwich for me. There was a long delay after I finished eating for them to bring me the check. My whole meal took around 2.5 hours. I had arrived starving and, I like to think, with an open mind. These are my honest, unfiltered observations. It is wonderful that so many people want to try their food and that their new space is bigger. Their decor, glassware and menu were cute and tasteful. We sat by the window and it was HOT. Like sweating-through-brunch hot. The rest of the restaurant seemed cool and comfortable, so maybe just avoid that area if it's sunny out. Food was good overall. I liked the chicken sausage and the signature sandwich. I also got the seasonal maple iced latte, it was a little more savory than I was expecting, but still good. We happened to walk in a little after 8am on a Sunday morning and were surprised to hear all the tables had a reservation, but we could sit at the bar....so we did. Note.....make a reservation! We had a Caesar salad, the breakfast sandwich and the burger all of them were delicious and came out really quickly even though they were busy. The restaurant and bathroom were very clean. The only areas of improvement was the latte and cappuccino ; the milk was not frothed at all it seemed there was no foam at all. I went here for a brunch with a friend and although it is not traditional diner food it is a healthier but delicious take on it. I got a sandwich with egg, honey and bacon and it literally was the perfect blend of salty and sweet. Felt like a hangover cure. The new place is so pretty! I made reservations for Sunday morning right at opening time, 8:00 AM. We found a spot in the lot next to the building where there are several spaces. There is also plenty of street parking at the time on Sunday morning. Right at 8:00 people started getting out of their cars to line up for opening. For people that are used to Three Monkeys or Mama 2's Biscuits, the door is on the side, it isn't the front corner. Very much like Songbird's original location. It has a ramp leading to the door and the line formed there. We waited about 5 or so minutes before the doors opened and then we were led to our table by the owner. We were sat in the second room, lots of windows, great metal dividers, large felt eggs as artwork. Great space. The table felt roomy for four guests. We reviewed the drink menu and when our server came back, we ordered our drinks but weren't ready to order food yet. When she brought our drink order we placed or order for food, three of the farmer market famous sandwiches and one classic breakfast with chicken sausage. The songbird latte was great! Salted caramel and smoked maple, so good. We waited quite a while for our food, I think there was a backup in the kitchen from a large to-go order, when the food came out it was a hit, the three who got the famous sandwich were blown away! The drink menu is actually longer than the food menu, which I loved for all the coffee bar options. I tried the Vietnamese iced coffee-- which I don't usually go for-- but it was so good! Rich and strong with a great coffee flavor. All our drinks came served in a cute glass you'll want to take home. Our server was so kind and accommodating when we mentioned we were on a time crunch, and everything came out quickly (we even finished with 25 minutes to spare!). Food-wise, the French toast was indulgent, topped with peach compote and sweet ricotta--almost dessert-level sweet, but the bread was better than a lot of the French toast I've had in my day. This might be one of the most impressive surprises I have stumbled upon while in STL. What a great little gem and a unique menu. We got a seat outside on a beautiful Saturday morning.
