Checked out the new Songbird location and overall had a good experience. The new space is really big, though the parking lot is still pretty small, but plenty of street parking! We sat by the window and it was HOT. Like sweating-through-brunch hot. The rest of the restaurant seemed cool and comfortable, so maybe just avoid that area if it's sunny out. Food was good overall. I liked the chicken sausage and the signature sandwich. I also got the seasonal maple iced latte, it was a little more savory than I was expecting, but still good. The carrot French toast didn't blow me away, I wasn't super impressed. Our waitress was very nice and attentive! No complaints One thing to note for parents: no high chairs, so just know that going into the experience! I think that Songbird suffers from a problem that many businesses have when they scale up: the personal connection is lost, and the food no longer tastes like it is made with love. I was very excited to try them but left knowing I would not return. I waited 40 minutes on a weekday morning for a bar seat for one, standing because all the waiting area seats were taken. The hostess/waitress was very nice when she got to me, but you could tell that the amount of customers was simply too much to handle. Now, this was okay - I should have made a reservation, and it's not the staff's fault they were overwhelmed. However, the service once I sat down was patchy, delayed and distracted. I had to remind different servers of my presence, multiple times. I was willing to overlook this if the food had been fantastic, but unfortunately, their most popular item, the combo breakfast sandwich, was so incredibly heavy. The first bite was crispy, oily and fatty deliciousness, but by the third bite it was simply too rich. The sweet overtone of the honey was lovely but did not cut through the grease. By the time I finished half, I understood why several diners had left the other half uneaten. My personal preference is for a fresh, umami yet balanced sandwich that does not make me feel queasy after finishing it. This was not the sandwich for me. There was a long delay after I finished eating for them to bring me the check. My whole meal took around 2.5 hours. I had arrived starving and, I like to think, with an open mind. These are my honest, unfiltered observations. It is wonderful that so many people want to try their food and that their new space is bigger. Their decor, glassware and menu were cute and tasteful. We had a Caesar salad, the breakfast sandwich and the burger all of them were delicious and came out really quickly even though they were busy. The restaurant and bathroom were very clean. The only areas of improvement was the latte and cappuccino ; the milk was not frothed at all it seemed there was no foam at all. The server seemed pretty annoyed that we asked to move tables before we were even sat because the table they were putting the two of us at was next to a larger group and they were pretty loud already. The dining room was empty other than them and us so I am unsure why it would be an issue to move us away from them. read more

What a little gem in the tower grove area! We happened to walk in a little after 8am on a Sunday morning and were surprised to hear all the tables had a reservation, but we could sit at the bar....so we did. Note.....make a reservation! I started with the vanilla bean latte (iced) and my son and husband had the songbird latte (hot) both drinks were excellent. Full of flavor and as you can see from the pictures, the hot lattes had lovely art. For the main event, I had the Grassfed Beef Patty Melt (with a side of cheesy grits), while my son and husband had the Combo Breakfast sandwich. All I can say is YUM! everything was seasoned well, crispy and so enjoyable. One of the best parts of the menu viewing is the lower left corner to see all the local providers of the ingredients - love that!! The ambiance is cheerful meets retro. The hardwood floors and the bar as well as the accents around the bar definitely retro. But the walls were a bright yellow and so cheerful! The service was very nice, we had our coffees first then had a chance to enjoy them before our main courses came out. I went here for a brunch with a friend and although it is not traditional diner food it is a healthier but delicious take on it. I got a sandwich with egg, honey and bacon and it literally was the perfect blend of salty and sweet. Felt like a hangover cure. The coffee cake is more of a coffee loaf it's got good spice but don't expect fluffy and super sweet; the chai was good nothing super different from a decent chai. I love the original Songbird so I was a little nervous coming to the new location, you know how it is when a place expands, you always hope nothing changes. Happy to report it did not disappoint! The new spot is so much bigger, lots of seating and a spacious layout. We did a walk in for brunch so we knew going in there'd be a wait and ended up on the waitlist for about 45 minutes. The food is just as good! The menu is short and simple so it makes it easy to work your way through the whole thing over a few visits. The drinks are also yummy! Cocktails, coffee, or tea definitely give them a try. The staff is always so efficient and friendly too, you can tell they have it together even when it's slammed. If you haven't been, go. The new place is so pretty! I made reservations for Sunday morning right at opening time, 8:00 AM. We found a spot in the lot next to the building where there are several spaces. There is also plenty of street parking at the time on Sunday morning. Right at 8:00 people started getting out of their cars to line up for opening. For people that are used to Three Monkeys or Mama 2's Biscuits, the door is on the side, it isn't the front corner. Very much like Songbird's original location. It has a ramp leading to the door and the line formed there. We waited about 5 or so minutes before the doors opened and then we were led to our table by the owner. We were sat in the second room, lots of windows, great metal dividers, large felt eggs as artwork. Great space. The table felt roomy for four guests. We reviewed the drink menu and when our server came back, we ordered our drinks but weren't ready to order food yet. When she brought our drink order we placed or order for food, three of the farmer market famous sandwiches and one classic breakfast with chicken sausage. The songbird latte was great! Salted caramel and smoked maple, so good. We waited quite a while for our food, I think there was a backup in the kitchen from a large to-go order, when the food came out it was a hit, the three who got the famous sandwich were blown away! They loved it! I enjoyed my breakfast, eggs were cooked to perfection, chicken sausage was flavorful, and I loved the toast! A friend invited me here and honestly I think this place could do really well in a busier location. The decor has a cool vintage feel, and the service was great. My friend is a regular, so they helped order for me. When the food came out, everything looked really nice and well plated. The flavors were decent and pretty balanced, nothing too strong. The English tea was interesting too, not like traditional tea at all. It had more of a latte kind of texture, which was different. The presentation was really nice though, definitely a great spot for food photos. I guess business was pretty busy because once we finished eating, the staff brought the check over pretty quickly and politely hinted that it was time for us to head out. This is an insanely popular restaurant. I'm grateful I had the foresight to book a reservation because there was a 40-minute wait by 11am on a Saturday. It's a tiny bustling spot with good amount of patio tables. The standout was the service -- my server was a pro, explained the menu, made recommendations, was attentive without being annoying, and made me feel at home. The food was good but I was expecting more given how bananas packed the place was. I got the Songbird latte and while it had a tasty smoky caramel flavor without being too sweet, the temperature of the beverage was lukewarm. My server was excited about the Breakfast Tamale but I opted for the Sprouted Grain English Muffin Sandwich, and he enticed me to add the "thick cut" of heirloom tomato for about $2. The sandwich was really good, albeit a little bit tricky to eat, and the bread was a little soggy on the bottom. The heirloom tomato addition wasn't worth the cost -- it was a very thin, mealy slice, and didn't pack the wow factor I was expecting. The cutest little breakfast spot! Songbird is tiny inside--colorful and clean, with just a handful of tables that book up fast (the latest reservation we could get was for 9 a.m.). They're moving to a new location soon, but right now the charm is in the intimacy. Outside, five small tables line the building facing the street, giving it a lively, inviting feel for a nice morning. The drink menu is actually longer than the food menu, which I loved for all the coffee bar options. I tried the Vietnamese iced coffee-- which I don't usually go for-- but it was so good! Rich and strong with a great coffee flavor. All our drinks came served in a cute glass you'll want to take home. Our server was so kind and accommodating when we mentioned we were on a time crunch, and everything came out quickly (we even finished with 25 minutes to spare!). Food-wise, the French toast was indulgent, topped with peach compote and sweet ricotta--almost dessert-level sweet, but the bread was better than a lot of the French toast I've had in my day. I recommend adding the fried egg on top to balance some of the sweetness. The breakfast sandwich, though, was my favorite, one the best I've had in a while. I got scrambled eggs with bacon which was very crispy, avocado( which had some sea salt on it which made it that much better) and delicious toast. My friends had the french toast and Breakfast Tamale Filled with cotija cheese, served with stewed black beans, shaved watermelon, cilantro crema, and a fried egg. Add Slagel Farm chorizo. We came right at the opening time of 8am on a Sunday because we didn't make reservations beforehand -- definitely recommend that for anyone who wants to guarantee snagging a table! We lucked out and got a spot outside so we could take advantage of the beautiful weather that day. I had the Songbird Latte and my partner had a Vanilla Latte, both iced, and they were both pretty good! Not necessarily our favorite lattes in the city (tasted a little watered down/not very sweet), but they were still enjoyable alongside our meals. The real star of the show was our breakfast sandwiches: I opted for the Sprouted Grain EM which came with perfectly cooked eggs, chicken sausage, pickled onions, micro greens, & an aioli. I also splurged an upcharge to add a thick slice of heirloom tomato. Definitely a knife-and-fork type of sandwich thanks to the very generous portions of toppings! My partner had the classic Combo on sourdough which included cheddar cheese, bacon, and fried egg with local honey. He also chose to add heirloom tomato for an upcharge. This might be one of the most impressive surprises I have stumbled upon while in STL. What a great little gem and a unique menu. We got a seat outside on a beautiful Saturday morning. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I have mixed feelings about this place. I only visited once, so I am open to changing my mind, but here's the short version of my experience: beautiful ambiance, great service, unimpressive food. The people working there went above and beyond to accommodate me and my friend, who had made a reservation for the wrong time (5 ). The bright yellow decor says "good morning" like a songbird would, and makes you feel happy (5 ). BUT... the regular coffee was unpleasantly acidic and not particularly fragrant (2 ). The breakfast sampler was a mixed bag. Two fried eggs were just eggs, nothing to report; the chorizo was very fatty and strongly spiced, so much so that I couldn't eat all of it and left about half on my plate. That is something I would never order again at this restaurant. The real superstar of the plate was the English muffin (5 ), worth returning for. Given that the restaurant was packed and the line was out of the door, I am likely in a small minority, but my bottom line is that, at that price point, the food should be striking, not just ok. read more

My husband had ordered "COMBO" sandwich it's made of three slices of aged white cheddar melted into toasted sourdough, layered with crispy applewood bacon and a fried farm egg, topped with sea salt and honey. I will say, flavor wise, you will not be completely blown away. It is a pretty basic build. But, I must admit, you can tell there is a ton of care going into crafting these bad boys. They are mindful of health here. So, the sourdough is not over buttered. There is not too much bacon, and it is not overly greasy. The honey is light, but still does its job. The salt sprinkled atop is a great addition. It was a great sandwich, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't have anything really making it distinguished. Every flavor was spot on. As a visitor to STL that day, I was looking for a good breakfast spot for my trip. Luckily, we found Songbird on a list as a top place to eat in the Midwest so that was the obvious choice. As someone who doesn't drink coffee, sometimes it's a struggle at breakfast spots but not here. The tea was flavorful, but not overly sweet. I was able to have a few glasses while we were there. I also ordered the combo breakfast sandwich. It had cheese melted on sourdough toast with bacon, egg, and honey. It lived up to the hype that our server said it would. It was phenomenal. Simple concept and creation but it had so much to love and all of the flavors compliment each other perfectly with every bite. Honey is not my top choice for a sandwich topping but it worked here. Our server was great and kept the coffee and tea refilled and our table clean. They were doing construction that day so we sat inside. Finally got a chance to come out to this restaurant and it did not disappoint! The server we had was amazing and the patio was great to sit and eat. The food was top tier and will definitely be back for more of it!! I didn't get to see the inside since we ate outside so not sure how that is. read more
