Stopped by late morning for a quick bite, I have been here a few times before but never actually ordered anything but its location is pretty good, right in the heart of the grove. There wasn't that much line when I went, they take your other at the kiosk by the bar. They have a large assortment of sandwiches, comes in whole OR half (which is half the price of a whole). I ordered 2 half sandwiches, "The Meatball" and "The Steak Out". It didn't take long at all to make my sandwiches and they also have options to customize specialty sandwiches if specific toppings are wanted. The Steak Out was the 1st sandwich tried, and was the best one out of the two. The steak was cooked medium rare but isn't too rare at all or overcooked past that if you are worried about that either. Not only that, but the jalapenos and the pepper mayo are to die for, and they didn't completely soak it in sauce (which is a common concern as well). Everything tastes so freshly made, with half a sandwich honestly being more than enough for 1 sitting. Overall rating 8.9/10. The Meatball was very good as well, meatballs were cooked well throughout and tender to the bite. I am not completely mad at the Baguette being the bread of choice but they couldn't have went wrong with ciabatta neither. It was a very solid sandwich, nothing too extraordinary but nothing I can really complain about neither. Overall rating 8.3/10. In past visits, I have also tried the Enzo Gorlomi (basically a spicy italian) which I thought was better than both sandwiches I tried during that visit, but I may be biased because I love spicy italian sandwiches. Should still try though in my opinion. All in all, I would definitely come back to this place when I'm in the area, pricing is pretty good for the food amount and quality you are getting. I've never been to Gramaphone before, but I've heard great things about their sandwiches. I saw that they were going to have a Muffuletta as their weekly special, so I figured this would be the perfect time to try them out. I am a little torn about it. The "half" is actually a quarter sandwich and the "whole" is a half of a sandwich. I guess because it is a double decker version, it kind of makes sense, but I'm glad that I asked first. The Gramophone is at the absolute top of the heap when it comes to local sandwich places. It's regarded as such by no less an expert than people who post on Reddit, and Reddit is the most accurate source of information on the Internets. It's where AI chatbots get their information from. I stopped by at about 2 PM on a Saturday to see if it lives up to the hype. Free parking was available at an adjacent lot and not completely full, though I imagine it might be a different story later in the evening. There may have even been a spot or two out front. There's still a railing out front from this place's time as a concert venue (it went by the same name). I was there about a million times, maybe 20 years ago, watching many an obscure (even then) rapper I knew via the aforementioned Internets. I remember, on more than one occasion, walking out with the artist to find that their van or trailer had been broken into. I don't trust the neighborhood any more today, ubiquitous LGBTQ murals notwithstanding. Inside, it's not immediately clear how to order. The bartender just kinda yells that he'll take your order, if you're ready, like he's doing you a favor. Otherwise, you might have to lean into the kitchen doorway and yell back there. There's maybe 20 or 30 sandwiches on the menu. They're all creative, with goofy-sounding names, and trying to imagine how they might taste is nerve-wracking, like trying to select a date for the evening at a Thai brothel. The only real solution is to try them all. Fortunately, you can order them in halves. You could try the entire menu, visiting once daily, in about two weeks, if you wanted to. The Mississippi Nights Club seemed like an obvious choice. It's listed first on the menu, meaning they're probably steering you towards it, and I appreciate a good club sandwich (and Mississippi Nights RIP). I also like a good Italian sub, but that's not really what the Italian Yardbird is. It's more along the lines of a chicken alfredo sub, if you can imagine. I didn't realize that until I bit into it (ahem), but I wasn't about to kick it out of my bed, so to speak. Of the two, the Italian Yardbird was the more interesting. I could have used more chicken and less mushroom, but it's the flavor combination of the Gouda, spinach and garlic butter that really makes it. Both sandwiches had bacon, and the bacon is emblematic of why this place deserves special recognition for taking pride in its offerings. Unlike literally every other sandwich restaurant, theirs is decent quality, as opposed to something you might get free from the government if you fall on hard times, and it's actually crisp. I didn't see a cookie on offer, which is a missed opportunity. What kind of sandwich place is this? If I ever return, and my GI system is feeling up to it, I might have to try the jalapeño popper soup. There's a veritable cornucopia of chips available, and they're all weirdly large. If you have a friend in this world (must be nice), you could share. The soft drinks, meanwhile, are served in a cup you might use to rinse the weirdly delicious-tasting fluoride off your teeth at a dentist's office. Are they trying to shame you into drinking beer? I had roast beef and while it didn't taste bad, it didn't blow me away. my mother had the meatballs and she felt the same, she wouldn't call it the best she has ever had. In preparing for our STL trip, I learned there are MANY legit AF sandwich shops. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough time to them all, but are so happy to have included The Gramophone as our first stop to fill our bellies before wandering around the Botanical Gardens.
