We chose this sandwich shop because they're a well-known small business in STL, and whenever we host visitors from out of town for luncheons we always try to support local restaurants so they can get a true taste of St. Louis. Since this place is such a staple, we figured we had to give it a try. The place was absolutely packed, which clearly shows it's a local favorite. Even with how busy they were, our pickup order was ready on time -- actually before the scheduled pickup since I arrived about five minutes early. The atmosphere definitely had that classic local sandwich shack vibe and seemed like it would make a great casual lunch spot for almost any occasion. Unfortunately, the food itself just didn't live up to the reputation for us. We ordered the hot salami sandwiches, which they're known for, but they were extremely greasy and the only flavors that really stood out were mustard and grease. We expected a lot more flavor and balance considering it's their specialty item. We also placed a large luncheon order of 10 sandwiches. Everyone was satisfied overall and the food was decent enough, but nothing really stood out or made us excited to come back. We personally prefer Adriana's for both flavor and overall quality. One of the biggest disappointments was that none of the sandwiches had cheese on them, even though we paid an extra $2 per sandwich for the garlic cheese bread upgrade. That was frustrating considering the additional charge. Honestly, I'm guessing we may have just caught them on an off day because it's obvious this spot has a loyal following. I haven't been to the Hill location in a long time. You order at the counter and wait in the open area. There are a couple of places to sit but not many, the seats were all full when we were there and one gentleman just stood next to a shelf and ate. When we got our food, the seating was still full so we sat outside even though it was chilly. I ordered a 6" Italian Po Boy with giardiniera. It's a decent sandwich, the giardiniera gives it a little kick. I am not a fan of bagged lettuce as it always has a certain taste, next time I should go with no lettuce. First, if you order online, you go pick it up on the side of the building and ring the doorbell to the window. Great so that you don't have to wait in the lunch rush line. I ordered the spicy daggett and added lettuce and oil and vinegar and I ate it so fast! It was the perfect amount of meat and giardinera. Gioia's is SO flippin good. I've lived across from The Hill since 2017 but only recently started going to the Gioia's near me; I always loved visiting their downtown location close to my pre-covid office. Today, I stopped in to pick up a hot roast beef for lunch, to go. It was easy to place my order at the kiosk, but I chose to place it with the cashier since no one was in line, and frankly, because he's always a delight to talk to. I ordered the small size roast beef with Swiss and au jus, but when I got home I was wondering if they accidentally gave me the large because it is SO much food. The beef wasn't gristly or fatty, and the bread was the absolute perfect consistency -- just bite after delicious bite. The wheat has little pieces of sprouted grain that I love. We had a second memorable visit to this over 100-year-old deli in the Hill, after a morning at the zoo. This time was a Tuesday lunch, and there were somehow no lines (bonus!). The workers were very friendly. The regular turkey sandwich was a satisfying lunch, and I recommend a toasted bun. I've moved across the river, so dining at Gioia's has become a thing of the past. The other day I was in STL helping a non-driving friend run errands and he offered me lunch at Gioia's as a thank-you. When he mad that offer, I gladly accepted. It was good to have their famous and delicious Hot Salami sandwich, again. I had it on their Cheese Garlic Bread. Yes, I did have it toasted for that extra crunch. I also had that smear of spicy mustard and chose Pepper Jack as my cheese. Typically, I will always take 9" over 6", but 6" of Hot Salami is enough. In fact, I was only able to eat half and enjoyed the other half later that afternoon while I watched Jeopardy. The staff is personable and if you are confused about ordering, they'll give you some solid advice. I am so glad my friend treated me to Gioia's. They are always fairly busy to busy but they get people through fast and are so friendly/helpful. Small inside with plenty of tables outside. The first time I ever had a sandwich from Gioia's was a life changing experience. We were in town so my wife could go to a friend's wedding shower, leaving me alone with a car in St. Louis and a couple of hours to kill. Normally, I'd go to a brewery, but this time, I really wanted a true St. Louis staple. I reached out to a friend who lives on The Hill, and he said one place: Gioia's. I got the Original Hot Salami sandwich, a bag of Red Hot Riplets and left for his house. That sandwich was gone in about 3 minutes. I'd never had anything like that. It was incredible, and I knew I had to go back. Fast forward two years to Christmas 2024. After four days of family activities, my wife and I were ready to break out of the house. I was determined to get Gioia's, while she would go to Zia's. I got the Porknado sandwich this time, and it did not disappoint. I ate half of it quickly, saving the other for a few days later (which reheated amazingly.) In addition to the amazing and unique hot salami, I just love the environment inside Gioia's. Most people who go are regulars, which can be intimidating for someone like me who is just an enthusiastic visitor. But the crew at the deli is very patient and kind, even walking me through a couple of questions. The deli was pretty crowded, but my food came out in under 10 minutes and we were able to find seats. Before we walked out, I grabbed a package of Summer Sausage to enjoy back in Louisville. It - no surprise - was also delicious. We have always been biased to Adriana's, I always say I prefer Adriana's over Gioia's. However I went the other day and tried the hot salami for the first time and WOW! It was so good. I got it the traditional way, with spicy mustard, Provel, and pepperocinnis. The staff were friendly and quick. I wish there was more seating inside, we wanted to sit down and eat but there wasn't a lot of space. It was cold and most of their tables are outside. This location was on the corner where ordering was done at the counter. The process was smooth and efficient as the line moved quickly. They had lots of different types of sandwiches including a lot containing their famous hot salami. I went with a regular size of the spicy Daggett ($10). It came with hot salami, hot Coppa, and capicola with spicy giardiniera and toasted on garlic pepper cheese bread. This was done right. My only issue was the bread to filing ratio. I would have liked to see a little more meat present, but not a huge deal. The meats were all thin nicely and tasted great. The giardiniera brought it all together while the garlic pepper cheese bread was crunchy and held up with all the oils from the meats as well as the giardiniera. You can order from someone at the front or use a kiosk. I wasn't too hungry so I opted for the Kids meatball sandwich on garlic cheese bread. It seems like the pro tip move to upgrade your bread to that for $2. The other person got the hot salami sandwich. You are able to dress both sandwiches up however you would like. The service was very friendly and quick. The meatball sub was really good. Toasty, crispy, flavorful and lots of melted cheese. I would absolutely go back. I have heard about this deli just about my entire life. My parents used to go there all the time when I was a child when we lived on the hill. They came in to the city for a visit today and we decided to do an online order. That process was super easy. You pick your sandwich and everything is customized and so many options of what you can put on your sandwich. The order could be ready as soon as 20 minutes after we placed it. When we arrived to the restaurant to pick it up, we walked in the front door and a worker was kind enough to help us and guide us back out the door and around the side of the building where you pick up your online orders. Super easy super quick. They did have several tables outside that you could enjoy your sandwich there. I ordered the. Berra Park Club which had turkey, bacon, and ham and lots of toppings. The only disappointing part was when ordering there was an option for wheat bread but it was not available today. I would rather have had the wheat bread, but the white bread was good.
