I was starving and didn't want any of the cafeteria food at work. I've heard a few co workers in the past talk about this place. I went a little after they opened and I decided on ordering a pickles club sandwich and sour cream kettle chips. The staff was friendly and the wait for my food wasn't log ( about 10 mintues). The place is clean and well organized. The sandwich was amazing and tasted really well. I wish I would have grabbed some mayo or mustard since the avocado spread was the only thing on the sandwich but other than that this was pretty tasty. Will be back to try more sandwich. Been wanting to try Pickles Deli for awhile, so was very excited to finally get the opportunity to try it. The store was pretty packed for a Saturday lunch, but the food got to our table very quickly. I ordered a Pastrami on Marble Bread and it was pretty good. The woman at the cash register said that their pastrami was voted the best in St. Louis which I'm not quite sure about, but it was pretty good nonetheless. I appreciate that it wasn't super heavy on the meats and that there were a lot of sauerkraut and different types of cheeses to balance it out. Also, the ingredients weren't overflowing enough so that the bread wouldn't catch all of it which now in hindsight maybe is a bad thing because you would want more ingredients in the sandwich. This is like the opposite of the pastrami at Carl's Deli where there is so much meat the sandwich begins to burst. Overall, pretty good deli although not the best pastrami in St. Louis in my opinion but would come back to try their other hot sandwiches. read more

Been here twice and I have to say my impression is pretty average. During my most recent visit, I ordered the French dip sandwich. I will say, the sandwich itself tasted great - the beef was juicy and well-seasoned. However, a common theme among my visits (and the pictures on the menu) is portion size. Most of the sandwiches appear to fall on the smaller end. Even the meatball sub is nowhere close in size to what you'd get at a chain like Subway or Jimmy Johns. Given the sandwiches alone are $11, without drink or sides, I'd expect better portion sizes to justify the price. The value here is slightly better than Panera, but just barely so. Service was fast. Overall, the quality of the sandwiches here are actually decent. For the price, I wish the portions were larger. read more

This place is in my neighborhood, and since I've been living here for three years, I figured I should try it. I am sorry I waited!! I ordered the Philly Cheesesteak, chips and an iced tea. Oh and a cheesecake brownie. The sandwich was very tasty. I think they could get a better chip selection. The brownie was on the gooey side, which I like, but know others don't. The Greek salad is always a filler for me and the mushroom soup was tasty however, the pita bread tasted like Fabulous cleaning product therefore, I couldn't eat it. I have this annoying quirk where I sometimes walk into a restaurant that specializes in something--like bar-b-que---and end up ordering an item that's not their specialty, such as a chicken fried pork chop. Or, I go into a terrific hamburger place and choose fish and chips. The results are predictable: dissatisfaction with my choices. Today, I went to Pickles and rather than order a deli staple like a Reuben, a Cuban, or a pastrami sandwich I walked out with a gyro. Now, it wasn't a bad gyro but it didn't dazzle like those from Mediterranean restaurants. Pickles might be a five-star spot. I'll have to return to find out. Pickles offers friendly, helpful staff and a smallish dining room. Paid parking on the street is at a premium on this popular West End street. read more

I had a nice little lunch date with a fellow Yelper, Dennis W. a few weeks ago! We decided to meet at Pickels Deli which I had always heard about, so I was excited to try it! When we arrived the place was pretty packed; I guess a lot of people in the CWE like this place? We waited in line and looked over the menu until it was out turn to order. I decided to create my woes sandwich since I am pretty basic. I opted for a pretzel bun, turkey, Swiss and an avocado spread! I like when I can choose my own items and anytime I can order a pretzel bun, I order one! They are the best. I couldn't tell if I wanted chips or pasta salad, but when I got closer to the counter where the pasta salad was, I decided it looked too good to pass up. I let the cashier know what I ordered and I paid my tab. I asked for a cup for water as well. Since the place was so crowded, it was challenging to find a spot, but we found a 2 seat table towards the front of the restaurant and waited for our food to be delivered. My sandwich was massive! I took one look and knew I could only eat about half of it. The pasta salad was delicious and I am glad I decided to order it. Since they were so busy, the service was just okay. They were all working very hard at taking orders and preparing orders that it was hard for them to excel at the service. But the execution was good; except for my friend's order because he asked for no slaw and they still managed to provide the slaw. He was such a champ though because rather than sending it back, he just picked it off! I just think they were so busy that maybe the order taker didn't hear his request or maybe the sandwich maker overlooked it? Either way, they made a small mistake which I can overlook since they were really busy! Overall, this is a good spot for lunch. I can see why it's so popular and I do want to go back. I bet in the warmer months it would be nice to find a place to sit outside while eating? Or maybe I can place a pick up order next time and go have a picnic in the park? Rating: 4.4 Stars This was my first ever order from Pickles Deli. Because the Meatball Sandwich that I ordered from Pickleman's Gourtmet Cafe on Wednesday was still fresh in my mind, it made sense to order Pickles Deli's Meatball Sub. This would also allow me to compare it to the meatball sandwiches at Good Buddy's (the GOAT) and Gioia's Deli. I ordered on the website, and this was straightforward. They were also efficient at preparing my order when I picked it up. My major complaint here is regarding the Gooey Butter Cookie. The online menu says "Gooey Butter Cookies"--plural--but you only get one cookie per order. This was misleading and disappointing because I had to order a second cookie. However, after discussing this with someone on The Team at Pickles Deli, this online menu error was corrected. The Meatball Sub was solid. It was very large and a little overwhelming to eat. The bread was fresh. Unlike other meatball sandwiches that I have had in St. Louis, this version only came with three meatballs. The sandwich had pretty good flavor, but its components weren't mixed well at all. They just put the meatballs in, poured sauce over it, put cheese on top, and then heated it up. Adding the cheese on the meatballs and between the meatballs and bread would have made for a better sandwich. Instead, I was left with a layer of melted cheese that I could easily just peal off and have no mozzarella at all. I am not quite sure what "higher standard" this is satisfying, but at least it is consistent with the photo on the online menu. I give Pickles Deli's Meatball Sub 3.8 Stars. Despite the disappointing (now corrected) error in plurality on the online menu, their version of the Gooey Butter Cookie was phenomenal, and it is the best Gooey Butter Cookie that I have had in St. Louis. It had amazing taste, the perfect sweetness, and the perfect fluffy and soft consistency. This saved the meal, and I really recommend it. The Gooey Butter Cookie will likely get me to come back in the future. I give Pickles Deli's Gooey Butter Cookies 5.0 stars. The average of the two items comes out to the 4.4-star rating. read more
