This is the kind of sandwich that you call and tell your friends about! The potatoe salad was also outstanding

What's left of a FANTASTIC Meatball sandwich

A cute small deli just a couple blocks from Manchester and I pass several times a week. Finally stopped...I'll definitely return soon and often! First, I love that this is a locally family owned and run Busines. We tried the Zach and the Meatball sandwich. The Zach was packed with turkey, cheese and pesto. The Meatball sandwich is honestly one of the Top 10 Meatball sandwiches in STL! It truly highlights the famous Vitale Sauce/Gravy recipe! One bit and you can feel the love and the time and effort it takes to simmer all day. Definitely will return soon!!

What an amazing place. Kinda out the way and small. There is no indoor seating. It's located in a nice neighborhood, but this was exactly what I needed. Not a lot of menu items, but they absolutely nailed it. I ordered the Pete with the recommendation of Mike. Man I must say that was an amazing sandwich and it was just how I like it. Perfect amount of cheese and meat. The sauce wasn't dripping everywhere but just enough. Cindy helped ring us up and she was so sweet. We chatted and she showed us what they have besides sandwiches and even gifted us a loaf of bread. Wish I didn't live so far but I will definitely come back if in the area and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great sandwich.

I love Vitales Deli. I grew up down the street and I totally wish this was here when I was younger. The quality of their products are high and it's absolutely delicious. The variety of sandwiches they offer are wide, and they also offer good sides like pasta and potato salad. The bread is fresh from the hill, and they have frozen options to take home as well. They always chat with me and make convo, it's been pleasant experiences each time I've visited. They have a couple umbrellas outside to sit and enjoy. Check them out!

My friend and I were craving sandwiches and saw Vitale's as an option online. He specifically wanted a caprese sandwich, which he ordered and I got the "Annie" turkey sandwich. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming, and the sandwiches were a good size for the price. There isn't a ton of seating nearby and it seems to be more of an order and go place, but it was a nice day so we sat outside. Overall would definitely recommend and I hope to be back to try the other sandwiches sometime!

This place is great! We've tried it twice since we moved back to the area. This place is only a 10 minute walk from our house, and that's so cool to me. It's awesome to see a locally-owned restaurant that you can walk or bike to, it seems like everything nowadays is so car-dependent. The atmosphere is nothing fancy, a very small space with some outdoor patio tables. However, the service is great. Both times I've been, they've asked how my days been and even thrown in some free items to sample. It's awesome to actually feel welcomed in an establishment. The sandwiches are great, they use the bread from Vitale's Bakery (they are owned by the same family). I've tried the Crazy Frank (okay, not my favorite), Glendale Club (good, basic), The Steve Pastrami (really good), and The Charlie Roast Beef (really good au jus). My only complaint is that the sandwiches are pretty bread heavy, but I just pick the bread out. Come early in the day, they sell out a ton and close early sometimes! Get a cannoli if you can, they're great!

Everything about my experience at Vitale's Deli was absolutely lovely! I visited on a Saturday around noon, and an employee said that they were almost sold out for the day. Glad I made it in time! The interior of the restaurant is very small. There's no tables inside, but there's a small bench for waiting. They also have some nice seating options outside. This is more of a grab-and-go spot. Vitale's offers a great menu selection. I ordered the The Zach, which includes Black Forest turkey, provolone cheese, tomato, and onion, and it's toasted and topped with pesto. Wow! This is a fabulous sandwich. I especially loved their fresh bread slight toasted. My partner ordered The Annie Turkey, which includes pepper turkey, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, topped with a Cajun-styled mayonnaise. He loved his sandwich as well. They also offer a great variety of chips to go along with your sandwich. I personally loved my Rosemary & Olive Oil chips. Each sandwich comes with a side, so we chose potato salad. Also very good! The most memorable part of my experience was the very end. As we were grabbing our sandwiches and preparing to walk out the door, one of the employees, possibly an owner, handed us a free loaf of bread. I ended up using it to make sandwiches for my lunches throughout the week, and it was perfect! This kind gesture affirmed my theory that Vitale's Deli is a friendly neighborhood favorite. Every customer seemed like a regular, and I can't wait to become one, too!

The service was amazing and the food was delicious! I loved the crunch to the bread and the flavor of the sandwich. I also got a meatball for my child, who has been very picky, but she loved it. So did I! Definitely would go again.

Pete! Macaroni salad! Chips!

Wonderful atmosphere amongst walking in!! People eating, food getting made, friendly vibe - what you would want to expect in a local establishment focusing on ready to eat sandwiches. Macaroni salad noodles weren't overcooked, bread for the sandwich tasted fresh, in and out within 15 minutes (Tuesday at 1:45ish). Look forward to singing praises of Vitale's Deli to friends!!!

Just out of Italy can describe Vitale's Deli located across the street from the City of Gendale on N. Sappington Road. I asked the workers what the favorite was and they said the Pete was #1 seller and the meatball sandwich was also very good. We ordered both... and they were quite tasty! The Pete was H U G E!!!! Reminds me of a recent trip to Italy!

My loaded ! It was filling.

This is a cute, quaint store in Glendale. The inside is very clean, and I was greeted when I entered. I had looked at the menu before, so I knew what I wanted. I ordered the one that was close to a Reuben, on marble rye, with lettuce, tomato, pickle, and onion. The side I chose was potato salad, and I was happy I did. They only use Boars Head products. The bread was super soft and fresh. The sandwich was good, as was the potato salad. The owner who made the sandwich was friendly and quick. So was the young man who I paid. For the people who like to walk their dogs in front can stop and get them a drink of water, which was a sweet touch. What a great spot in Glendale!

The best deli with the best service! The owner, Mike, makes us feel like we're family every time we go! The Italian sandwich is the best in St. Louis! My husband loves meatball sandwich.

"The Gracie" Meat Ball

Vitale's is an adorable, family owned Italian sandwich shop in Glendale. The owner and his family were preparing the sandwiches behind the counter. They were so nice and personable! We restrained ourselves and only ordered 4 sandwiches: "The Annie" Turkey, "The Gracie" Meatball, "The Zach" and "The Pete". The Zach and the meatball are both warm sandwiches and were my favorite! The bread is soft on the inside but crusty on the outside. The veggies are all fresh and the sandwiches are extremely filling. They each come with a side. The pasta salad was our favorite! They also offer cannolis and frozen handmade pastas! The do not have any indoor seating, but they have outdoor patio seating. We can't wait to go back and try more!!

The hostess asked if the patio would be ok and we were delighted to say yes. My wife is using a walker due to upcoming hip replacement surgery and the hostess suggested we use the outside patio gate instead of trying to pass through the restaurant. We sat in the patio and water and fresh hot 2 kinds of bread were placed on the table. Our server, Connor, is so knowledgeable and pleasant. He was patient with us and his wine suggestion was spot on. Great sense of humor and he worked all the patio tables. The food choices were amazing and exceeded expectations. Pricing was comparable with what we expected. The lobster bisque was thick, hot and very filling. There was ample pieces of lobster as well. My wife shared that her pasta was not hard or dry or rubbery but tasted freshly made. Connor shared that the prep starts every morning with homemade pasta. The traditional toasted ravioli were just that, toasted and tasty and the CG shrimp seemed so much more than an appetizer. Meals could be had with just those. I was very satisfied it ordered lasagna anyway. I just had them pack it to go as I was comfortably full. I know there are a lot of choices on the Hill but I assure you this one stands out. Please treat yourself to Charlie Gitto's. Don't wait for a special reason. Any time you eat here will be special

Overall Impressions: Visiting a historic St. Louis institution for the first time is always…read moreexciting, but our inaugural dinner at Charlie Gitto's on The Hill yielded a surprisingly mixed bag. While the drinks, bread, appetizers, and desserts shone, the main courses and service fell short of the restaurant's legendary reputation. Ambiance & Setting Stepping in from a mild, low-80s afternoon, the indoor dining room felt starkly dark--almost like a cave when walking straight in from the street. Thankfully, we opted to sit on the patio, which was a delightful choice and provided a very nice, relaxed environment for dinner. While the restaurant recommends smart or business casual attire, the vibe on the ground was much more relaxed; there were plenty of people wearing shorts, and a diner nearby on the patio was sporting jeans and a t-shirt. For parking, the Hill location does have a lot attached, but it was full when we arrived. Fortunately, there is plenty of on-street parking nearby, plus another parking lot just one block down. Drinks & Starters * Drinks: Both the house Pinot Grigio and my husband's Super Tuscan were excellent. We chose a single glass rather than a full bottle. * Bread: The bread was outstanding, served in generous portions. * CG Signature Shrimp ($22): Extra-large, roasted in garlic butter and seasoned breadcrumbs. We received three nice-sized shrimp with plenty of flavorful garlic butter left over, which was fantastic for dipping the bread. Entrees * Fiore Borghese ($24): Small, flower-shaped hollow noodles tossed in a pink Cognac sauce with prosciutto, onions, and parsley. The portion was good and shareable, but the pasta was slightly short of al dente and could have used another minute in the pot. While the first few bites were nice, the dish quickly proved to be very one-note; it would make a great side option, but it felt heavy and repetitive as a main entree. Additionally, no extra Parmesan cheese was offered tableside--even though we noticed another diner nearby being offered it--and this dish could have really used it, or perhaps it just wasn't designed for it. * Veal Parmigiano ($55): Bone-in, breaded, and baked with pomodoro sauce and CG cheeses. We had looked forward to this signature dish, and the size was very good and definitely shareable. The pomodoro sauce was the undisputed star of the dish--vibrant and delicious. Unfortunately, everything else missed the mark. The cheese was not melted through and was coolish at best. More importantly, the meat was very difficult to cut even with the heavy steak knives provided, snagging on silver skin, turning out quite chewy, and lacking proper seasoning. At $55, this was a major letdown. Dessert & Coffee * Tiramisu ($12): Ladyfingers, espresso, and mascarpone cheese--very nice. * Chocolate Cake ($12): Triple-chocolate--excellent. * Espresso: A great way to cap off the meal. Service Our server, Noah, provided a mixed-at-best experience alongside his helper. While they were initially attentive with clearing plates and refilling glasses, the pacing went completely off the rails toward the end of the meal. Noah wasn't very chatty (no real personal warmth,) and we had to prompt him to ask if there were any daily specials. Worse still, he cleared my husband's entree plate before I was even halfway finished with mine--making the table feel awkwardly unbalanced--and then dropped the bill right along with our desserts. He even came back to see if we were ready to pay while we were still eating dessert. With the patio only half-full (we arrived at 4:30 PM on a quiet Sunday) and us having been there just a little over an hour, rushing us out like that was completely unnecessary and frustrating. The Verdict With a total of $190 including tax, we expected a seamless, high-end meal. While the patio, wine, starters, and desserts were highlights of the night, the execution errors on the heavily hyped veal and the one-note pasta mean we likely won't rush back for dinner anytime soon.

Upon entering, there is a hostess stand and small bar with seating extending to the back of the building. We had the first table so I can't comment on the full size. My son ordered a Bloody Mary and I had a Pinot Noir while we looked at menu. Bloody Mary was very good and the wine was pleasant. We started with Garlic Bread with Cheese. It was the only menu item I would not order again. Flavors did not come together. I ate my fair share so it was good. Just not great. We then shared a cheese pizza with provel. Elite crust and sauce! The crust had an amazing char and the sauce was deliciously nuanced. The cheese was very good, but most definitely not the star of the pie. Pasta Pomodoro was wonderful. House made pasta was excellent and the sauce was a perfect accompaniment. (Anthonino's really does sauces well!) I finished with tiramisu and I am so glad I did! Did I need it? No. Did I want it? Mama's is in the Little Italy area of St Louis and the neighborhood is very charming and well laid out but not ostentatiously. There is ample sidewalk seating and inside seating. Luckily Mama's has a small bar inside with seats as this place was busy on Sunday night. I took a seat at the bar and ate there. I had great service from the two friendly bartenders during my visit. I had the famous ravioli along with a glass of Chianti which always goes well with red sauces. For the ravioli I had the half meat and half cheese selection. The order was served piping hot and with a generous bowl of tasty marinara sauce for dipping. After using a fork for the first one, I switched back to using my hands for the remainder of the order. These ravioli were tasty and well made with a light coating and dusted with parsley but I didn't get the hype. Maybe it's just a St Louis thing? I really think if I return here one day, I'll also try the other Italian dishes offered as they looked awesome as the went by my seat (I was next to the kitchen). I really loved the marinara sauce that was served with my ravioli and that is always a good sign of good food at an Italian restaurant. Mama's has a lot of charm and great staff and is super popular in this seemingly cohesive community. A great place to visit.

We started with the toasted ravioli, and it may have been the best I've ever had. Crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Our party of four was thrilled with every entrée. I ordered a veal dish with a side of pasta, and it was absolutely outstanding. Everyone else ordered pasta dishes, and there was plenty of "oohing" and "ahhing" at the table with every bite. The portions are huge, so we're all looking forward to enjoying the leftovers. Service was friendly from start to finish. Our server was warm and attentive, although things moved a little slower than expected, and it took a while for our entrées to arrive. That said, once the food hit the table, it was clear the wait was worth it. The restaurant has a wonderful history and old-school charm, though the dining room could probably use a little refreshing. We also stopped at the bar before dinner, and unfortunately that was the biggest letdown of the evening. The presentation and flavor of our cocktails were surprisingly disappointing--they looked and tasted more like drinks from a budget hotel bar than from one of The Hill's iconic restaurants. Thankfully, the incredible meal more than made up for the cocktails. With so many outstanding Italian restaurants on The Hill, we've been fortunate to try many of them, and Cunetto House of Pasta has firmly earned a spot in our personal Top 3.
