Doughnuts
Emily W.

We stopped by for brunch on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised by the wait. Despite the wait, we decided to stay because we knew it would be worth it. They seated us at a long table with people at the other end, but we still had ample space. To started our meal, we ordered a hot chocolate and coffee, along with some of the delicious doughnuts. Those doughnuts were scrumptious, and I even made sure to save one chocolate for after my breakfast. For my main course, I opted for the BBLT, which was an enormous sandwich filled with all the classic ingredients: bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado, over-easy egg, and aioli. It was served on a wheat bun with breakfast potatoes, making it a hearty and satisfying meal to kickstart my day. We also shared a giant blueberry pancake, which was a complete meal in itself. I'm still reminiscing about that delicious pancake along with everything else and can't wait to return to this place for another delightful brunch experience!

It was a long wait, but we loved being able to join the waitlist before arriving! The food we got was absolutely delightful with the special for the weekend being a true favorite. Our server was kind, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu making ordering easy and speedy. Definitely a busy spot, but we didn't feel rushed or too crowded! The inside was a cute little breakfast spot that was perfect for a Sunday brunch. I will absolutely be back in the future (after making sure to join the waitlist!)

Food is very good. I had the chorizo hash and loved it. However, service was subpar and the space is too small for the amount of tables. Not sure if I just went on an off day.

I had not heard of this place. But a girlfriend of mine invited me there for brunch. It was so good. Really enjoyed the breakfast. Fried rice and my blueberry pancake. This is a definite brunch location to visit in Clayton.

This year, when thinking about where I wanted to go to celebrate my birthday, it was a really quick decision for me to make. I knew Half & Half was the only place on my mind! For some reason, the waitlist online was not available so we could not get on the list ahead of time so I am not sure if they took that down or if they just turned it off or what. But that didn't bother me because I was willing to wait if needed. Where Half & Half is located is on a really busy street in Clayton and you really only have the option to find a street parking spot. Maybe you get lucky and find one out front? Or maybe you are like me and need to park 4-5 blocks away and take a little walk. Either way, you can find parking if you are willing to walk a bit. Upon arriving, there were already a ton of people waiting to be seated so I already knew it would be a wait. I talked with the hostess and added my name (party of 2) to the list and was told it would be about 30-45 minutes wait. The restaurant is not very large, so on a cold day, I did not want to wait outside. Instead, I was able to find a little spot in the corner near the bar and just tried to take up as little space as possible while waiting. Eventually, I received the text that our table was ready and so we made our way to the hostess stand (had to make out way through crowds of people who were also waiting) and then the hostess walked us over to our booth for two. It was just perfect for us. Tim, our server came over right away to greet us and offered us coffee or other drinks. Once we ordered, he gave us some time to review the menu and went on his way to grab our drinks. When he came back, we were ready to order, and, of course, I think I had a difficult order, but Tim made it possible and wasn't even bothered by request. I really just wanted a smaller portion of the Clara cake (to share) and then I asked for a scrambled egg and some turkey bacon. I thought this would be a complicated order, but he made it work and I am so grateful for that. My hubby ordered one of the hash bowls with steak. While waiting for our food, we enjoyed coffee and Tim made sure our cups were filled. He even brought over some bailey's for the coffee for my hubby to add since I ordered a mimosa as my cocktail of choice. When the food came out, it was all so fresh and delicious. I legit love the Clara cake so much and it really made my birthday super special! The eggs were super fluffy and the turkey sausage was also good. Since I did not finish my meal, Tim offered to bring over a box and a bag and then he made sure we were all set before he gave us the bill. Since the restaurant was still super busy, we did not hang out for much longer after paying. Instead, we paid, packed up and were out the door. Honestly, the food is always my favorite here. But this visit was even extra awesome since Tim took such good care of us. Servers are busy and I appreciated how he took good care of us. Thanks to Half & Half for the delicious meal and thanks to Tim for the service! I'll be back.

Came here on a weekend for brunch. It gets very busy, especially on Saturday morning so be prepared to join the waitlist ahead of time. They have street parking outside in front of the restaurant. The restaurant is a little bit on the smaller side so with it getting so packed it can be a little tight if you have a larger group. But it is a nice and cute café vibe. The wait staff was friendly and efficient with service. The portion sizes were good and there are a fair amount of options for non-meat eaters. I definitely had plenty to take home with me. Their pancakes are huge and have a really great flavor!

Half & Half - a true St. Louis brunch gem! Half & Half in Clayton has that perfect local charm that makes it feel both laid-back and special every time you go. The atmosphere is cozy yet lively -- full of the smell of freshly brewed coffee and buttery goodness coming out of the kitchen. The servers accommodate and make sure your brunch always hits the spot! Their specialty coffees are next level -- the mocha gets me every single time. It's rich, perfectly balanced, and the kind of drink that makes you pause for a second before that first sip. And when it comes to the food, you literally can't go wrong. Everything on the menu is a winner -- from the Clara Cakes (sweet, fluffy, and indulgent) to the breakfast fried rice, French toast, omelettes, and skillets loaded with creamy sauces and golden potatoes. The savory dishes are goddess-level savory -- think buttery biscuits, creamy sauces, and flavors that make every bite feel like brunch heaven. Whether you're catching up with friends, grabbing coffee solo, or starting a weekend with a bang, Half & Half is one of those brunch spots that just gets it right every time.

Short wait list this Sunday! Service was fair, pretty busy, we sat inside, but outside was also an option! Lively atmosphere, great for groups and also fine for solo dining. Food is always great, my spouse always orders the blackberry French toast for the table along with the meal. I also had the cold brew in addition to the Cali Omlette!! Yum

Avocado toast and eggs with missing seasoning
Chrissy E.

I came here for brunch with a friend as she suggested this place. She made a reservation and by the time we got there, we were still 8th on the list with plenty of open tables. We checked in and were seated out on the patio. After sitting, we were quickly given water and asked what we'd like to drink. I was craving a mimosa but they only have the regular and grapefruit flavors available, so I went with the classic. Food wise, we both chose the avocado toast but had our eggs prepared differently. A few minutes later we got our mimosas. I enjoyed the heavy pour! Shortly after, our food arrived and this is where things took a turn. When we got our plates, we noticed the two pieces of avocado toast with eggs on top but that's it. We were taken aback that this didn't look like the pictures we had seen and that the dish seemed so plain. Upon moving my egg to the side, the bread was indeed plain. There was no seasoning, not even the everything seasoning that usually goes on top, no balsamic drizzle, nada. It was super disappointing. We finished and then asked for the check. The food was pretty good but overall, I was underwhelmed. It didn't "wow" me like I had hoped it would.

I really appreciate the variety here. I debated between 4 to 5, because I haven't tried many of the coffee options. Since I've only been once, but would return I would say it's worth a visit. So the pancakes, you can order a stack or singular. I was very grateful because I wanted to try it, but with my avocado toast. Not all places have the egg with the avocado and I loved that they offered this. My friend had some type of scramble. They had a miscommunication on chopping her sausage in it, but small hiccup. The only problem I'd have is I would probably want to order the same thing even though they had a lot of other items that looked appealing. Exception being, I would skip the house coffee and try a specialty. It may be obvious for locals, but only paid street meter parking options.

Blackberry Cheesecake Blackberry Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast
Kellen S.

I live in Soulard but was in Clayton every morning a couple weeks back and ended up eating here 3 times because I really liked the food and service. I initially visited this place because it's a rare downtown restaurant with great street parking so I always knew I could find a spot (huge plus!). My first visit I tried the blackberry cheesecake stuffed French toast but It didn't seem like it was truly stuffed with any cheesecake. It had some on top though and the flavor was still great, just a bit dry. I should've gotten a bit of syrup on the side. I washed it down with an iced French toast latte that was crazy good so I ordered one to go. Finally my server was Molli and she was just perfect. Sweet, talkative, and attentive -- oh and to top it off she saved my butt after I left my credit card there. I hope she sees this because I appreciate her! The next two times I visited that week I was craving oatmeal and they delivered in an elevated fashion. Their banana walnut oatmeal is decadent. I love boring oatmeal at home but it doesn't have to be boring. Half & Half elevates this humble dish into an incredibly tasty experience. I can't get oatmeal at other places now! I washed it down with some OJ that was just alright. It doesn't taste like it's freshly squeezed in house like other breakfast spots in Clayton but it's hardly a complaint. I will visit this warm and cozy spot many times over.

Both the Bloody Mary and the Espresso Martini were excellent! The deviled eggs were a delicious appetizer. Hands down though, that biscuit breakfast sandwich was what breakfast dreams are made of! Kelly recommended the sausage which was rich and flavorful. The over-medium egg was perfection! Potatoes were well seasoned and mouthwatering. We were pleasantly surprised they weren't super busy, selfishly it was nice, but I hope it's not always like that because they deserve the hype. We sat at the bar and had great service the whole time. We started with a house made Bloody Mary (it had fantastic flavor) and an espresso martini (should we say the best in the city???). A piece of candied bacon came on the Bloody Mary and I'm still thinking about it. Then the food. I got a cheeseburger and fries and it was freaking fantastic. So juicy and tender, tons of flavor, one of the top burgers in St. Louis in my opinion. My husband got a special which was a braised beef Benedict and he was VERY happy. He likes a good burger and still said his meal was the best. They plate everything so beautifully, this is like a high class culinary experience in a (clean diner) with great prices. And the small menu is very preferred because it doesn't take you an hour to decide. And the fries - so fresh and crispy. This place deserves all the love. I was so impressed with it, it doesn't look like much from the outside but it is so worth it.

I would call this place the perfect "city slicker" diner…read more The location is on a busy street, they have a side alley that is also their patio. They are very wheelchair accessible, and they make that known. There's no moving tables or chairs to ensure this. Which is great! But it does make it very difficult to come with children who are high chair aged. It's very "self-service". There's a host/food runner who seats you and brings your food out. You order all your food on your own device off of a QR code. The menu is very eclectic, no ways to personalize and very expensive. After ordering you can tell everything is made to order so it does take a minute to get your food which I'm not knocking. But you order and tip ahead of time like it's a normal restaurant and it's just not that. I'm taking my own order so it takes a lot of the personal connection or service out of the experience. Which brings me back to being the perfect city diner. Now the food, we were actually recommended to come here because of the pancakes. Which we had gotten both the kids and regular pancakes. The pancakes comes with EVERYTHING on them while the kids pancakes have everything on the side. NOTE: they are the same exact dish, the only difference is the kids dish is the condiments on the side. As far as flavor goes. The pancakes weren't bad, they have crispy edges and fluffy centers. But you can tell they're fried in a heavy oil of sorts or butter. It reminded everyone in our party of funnel cake. It tastes like we were eating overpriced fair food. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE fair food but not for a sit down breakfast where I'm expecting AMAZING pancakes. This is a pancake shaped funnel cake. The bacon was overcooked, dry and for the price wasn't worth what we had gotten. Every piece was crumbly because it was overcooked. So if you're a soft bacon person, don't waste your taste buds. We also had gotten the sausage egg and cheese sandwich. It came on a ciabatta type bread with a side of potatoes (don't forget there's not substitutions when ordering for yourself). The sandwich was simple, came with pickled onions and homemade pickles on the side. All that to say, it's a great place if you don't cook yourself at home. If you have a small kitchen and maybe don't enjoy cooking. This place is for you. Its a good "home cooked" meal you can have. But, honestly at least to me, not worth the price. But try it for yourself! I won't be back because it's not for me, but there is a patron for this type of place and that's for the non-cooking people.

Cute ambience- a cozy feel Description of food- I love how the menu identified common allergens. When we were seated, My daughter who is gluten intolerant, explained that she has a gluten allergy. She orders the Chakchouka that is listed as GF. It came out with slices of bread. We were not sure if the bread was gf. After about 10 minutes our waiter walked past us. We flagged him down and asked if the bread was gf and he looked at us like we had 10 eyes and said "no- absolutely not" and briskly walked away.... Well why would a server bring a child bread when they knew she was gluten intolerant? Which brings me to the service- We ordered 3 coffees. One hot with almond milk, one iced with oat milk and one hot with 1/2 and 1/2. The coffee came out and 2 "milks" were placed in front of us and our waiter moved on. We had to wait 5ish minutes before our waiter walked by again to ask what the milks were. He simply said - that one is 1/2 and 1/2 then walked away. Now I get it... if he was slammed... I'd understand why he was so short... but at the time we were in there there were 2 waiters and 4 tables. He was not slammed. We also didn't get the iced coffee until we flagged down a different waiter and he exchanged a hot coffee for an iced. There are complimentary snacks coffee and tea available 24/7. Location is great. The place has a bit of a dated feel and there are some repairs/upgrades needed here and there but keep in mind Dear Traveler: this couple has only owned the place for 15 months so I'm confident minor facelifts are coming. Only VERY minor complaint, and it's only from personal taste: food although delicious is a bit carb-heavy. This is no fault of the owners and they give you plenty of opportunity prior to your stay to mention any diet preferences, which I failed to do. So no knock on FdL at all. The Fleur-de-Lys is the epitome of a luxurious getaway. Whether it is the quaintly appointed guest…read morerooms or the delightful library and parlor, each area of this former residence is unique and meticulously maintained. While it is not likely the norm, the owners, Mark & Leslie, met us at the front door, quite literally inviting us into their establishment. It was simply the most welcoming manner in which to be introduced to this treasure and Leslie quickly engaged us with the history of the home and how she and Mark had recently become the owners. We chose this destination based upon the significance of the Fleur-de-lis to my love, a native New Orleanian. Given St. Louis' rich French heritage, the mansion was originally outfitted with four chimneys that feature the fleur-de-lis design and the pattern is repeated throughout the home. While we enjoyed a quiet morning coffee in the back of the property, a lovely shaded patio area, she noticed how many places the symbol was present. She actually made mention to Mark & Leslie that they could make an activity out of counting/finding all of the fleur-de-lis around the home. What a fun idea! We were fortunate enough to book the Tower Grove Park room, a spacious room fitted with a king-size bed and a two-person jacuzzi tub. There is even a 'fainting couch' for that extra French touch! The bed was amazingly comfortable and the decor and accoutrements were exceptional, right down to the pocket doors and writing desk. But a B&B is set apart by the fare served in the morning, and this is where Mark, a chef by trade, and Leslie, a self-taught baker, knock it out of the park. That morning's menu included a fruit starter, fresh juice, Leslie's home-baked sourdough toast and home-baked English muffins, and Mark's egg and sausage soufflés with country potatoes. The entire breakfast had us completely over the moon! We felt so at home that we wanted to clear our own place - so we did! The rates are competitive and well worth every moment spent here. There is parking behind the property, as well as across from the property, and each guest is allowed a unique security code so as to gain entry while you are enjoying your stay. I can't say enough about how much we enjoyed this getaway, and Mark, Leslie, & assistant Sammy made us feel like family from the moment we crossed the threshold. We'll be back - and you should give Fleur-de-Lys a try!
