this review is for the pasta edition of FIXE which took place on 9/5/11.
one night a month, clayton's newest breakfast/brunch spot half & half opens its doors for a limited seating multi-course dinner. run by chef mike randolph, the event is called fixe, and features a different theme each month. due to work obligations, carrie and i were both unable to attend the inaugural meal which demonstrated many creative uses of the egg. after seeing feast magazine's review of the event, we both knew that the next edition of fixe which featured pasta was not to be missed.
having made our reservation via twitter weeks in advance, we arrived at the modest clayton store front at around 6:50, and were seated in a booth in the small dining room. at the time of our arrival, two other couples were present. shortly after, two groups arrived who seemed to be friends or family of the chef.
with the overhead soundtrack making us feel at home with tracks from bon iver, ben folds, damien rice, the shins, eddie vedder and so on, things got started around 7:30 with our first course. in the time that elapsed before the meal began, there was limited interaction from the staff aside from being poured water and inquiring if we were interested in the wine pairings. while not a huge issue, a bread offering or a cocktail list would have been a nice way to pass what was roughly forty minutes of waiting
TEN COURSES OF AWESOMNESS
when it was all said and done, calling our first experience with fixe a success would be an understatement. all ten courses were were creative, visually appealing, and most importantly, tasted great. to my knowledge, there is not a place in st. louis save for maaaaybe acero that is executing pasta at this level on a daily basis. after the meal, chef mike randolph came out to the dining room to thank his guests, and we enjoyed chatting with him for a bit about the concept as well as the chicago food scene.
while the night was very positive as a whole, there were a few minor glitches here and there. while the two servers that handled the dining room were very friendly and professional, their descriptions of the dishes and especially the wines were somewhat lacking at times. a few of the wines were simply set on the table without any introduction. tying in with the wine was the sheer size of the pours we were given. aside from the champagne, each of the other six pours easily exceeded five ounces, and finishing the entire pairing would compromise anyone's sobriety. while some may not consider this a bad thing, i feel the size of the pours should be scaled back. finally, maybe a bit more could have been done with the ambiance to create more of a fine dining experience. while i did appreciate the laid back feel, the empty tables with chairs stacked on top of them came as a bit of a surprise to me.
overall, only our favorite meal at niche can compete with what we were served at fixe for the title of our best meal in st. louis, and i am absolutely thrilled about this concept going forward. additionally, at about $90 per person inclusive of wine, one would be hard pressed to find a better value anywhere. carrie and i have already reserved our spots at next month's fowl themed iteration of fixe, and are very excited to see if chef randolph can out do himself!
