This place is the dopest panaderia in LB. I've been a sourdough enthusiast since the day I stepped into their gusto house (cute little cottage house) pre-brick & mortar. The gusto duo has won the hearts of so many bread lovers. It's difficult to list favorites because all their baked goods are worth trying. I personally LOVE their Atole cake that is usually located in their small fridge. Today, I shared the Dona, the Queen, a bag of alfajores cookies (popular in Argentina), Mexican polvorones cookies (short bread-like cookies) and their latte. My boyfriend brought me here because he wanted to see what all the constant lines to get in are all about. He figured it must be good if people are willing to wait in line for it. And it was good. The Jamon Roll was my favorite thing we tried. It was so perfectly savory and amazing. I really liked the coffee I got as well. The inside of the cafe was super cute and inviting. They had an area set up with fun little nick nacks you can buy like a corn on the cob candle. The staff was friendly and despite the line, we received our order quickly. Two words... NIXTAMAL QUEEN...Also had the Doña, which was also delicious. As far as coffee, it's great as coffee should be in any true good bakery. I had a Cortadito which, in its straightforward nature, pairs really well with the earthy but sweet taste of the pastry. Service was great. I had good juju as I was able to just walk right in, picked, paid, and sat...either I just came in right at the end of a long line or dodged the start of one. I took a long walk to get here and didn't regret that one bit. Ambiance is warm and fuzzy and smells great, again as any true good bakery should... Long Beach is a city I avoid like the plague, but I was willing to drive out for this place after seeing it featured on local news recently. My coworker also raved about it I came here mainly for its Nixtamal Queen, which is quite addicting. It's kind of like a mix of kouign amann and corn cake. It's sticky, chewy, and has just the right amount of sweetness. Also got Chori-Bun, which is a sweet bun with maple-habanero chorizo and hatch cheese. Not sure if this is a temporary item or regular, but was really good as well. Sesame Flatbread seemed basic, but was executed well. Just a good bread brushed with little bit of olive oil. I do like this place but not sure how often I will frequent due to its high price. I realize this place uses really good ingredients, but it's still high compared to other high qualify bakeries I've been to. Location doesn't help either because of horrible parking situation. There's no designated parking lot for this place. It's street parking only, which is always limited. read more

A quick invite to a Sunday breakfast at 8:30a brought me to another bakery find on 4th Street, just a block from Ralph's. I was greeted with no line outside and friendly faces inside to take my order! FYI... in less than 10 minutes a line formed outside! Got myself a brewed coffee and a baked treat. You do have to be prepared to stand in line, but it moves quickly. I usually order a chocolate croissant, the guayaba, and a savory pastry. I was excited to try this panaderia since they use sourdough as natural leavening and make their own nixtamal. I got here about 20 minutes before the shop opened on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend since I heard there could be long lines and it was true. At opening there was already a line down the block at least 10 people deep! I got a few sweet and savory pastries and a friendly gentleman who also got here early said he swears by the dorado bread so I got a loaf to try. To drink I got the cafe de olla with a splash of oat milk ($.25 surcharge for the "splash") and a honey jamaica. I thoroughly enjoyed the mole empanada and the chori-bun. The bread tasted light with the perfect amount of outer crispy crunch. The chorizo in the chori-bun was spicy, just a touch of sweetness, and just the right amount of saltiness for me. The mole empanada was packed with rich umami flavor from the locally grown mushrooms and I liked the complexity of the mole sauce. The empanada dough was super light and crisp like a turnover. The concha I had is probably the best concha I've tried. It had a really tender, airy crumb on the inside, with the lightly crunchy sweet chocolate infused topping on top. We all devoured our goods with gusto! They also sell their sourdough starter for those that want to try their hand at naturally leavened baking. A cup of starter is $10 and there is a QR code on the side of the cup which gives you the feeding instructions. The cafe de olla had a subtle amount of sweetness and spice, and it went well with all the pastries. The jamaica was more on the tart side as is the case typically with this type of agua fresca. I'm excited to try the loaf of bread and nixtamal queen, their take on a kouign amann. If it's anything like their other pastries I'm sure it will be amazing! read more

I wish I had purchased more from Gusto Bread when we stopped in. My brother was checking out the bookstore next door and my sister and I were exploring. We ended up grabbing a Jamaica to sip on and sitting outside, but even while we were hanging there I wished I had gotten some of the pastries. To be fair, we had already eaten a lot at this point and I tend to over order when I find places like this. However, next time I visit I'm going to make this an early stop so I can try out more of their items. Everything is absolutely delicious but my favorite is the medialuna sandwich. I was able to place an online order for their seasonal Pan de Muerto. I bypassed the line that was about 10 people deep outside, walked right in to the pick up counter, gave them my name, they handed me my order and I was back out in about 2 min! The down side is they did not have coffees available for online order, it would be great if that was an option. For now, I'll just stick to their pastries. The Pan de Muerto was soft and delicious. It was small to share but perfect for one person. I will be back for second before the season ends! The ham and cheese croissant pastry was ok. It did not have enough meat and cheese at at. The guava cream cheese pasty was not good, there was one small bite full of guava and I barely detected cream cheese. The iced horchata matcha was definitely unique and probably the best thing I got from here, but it still was not very enjoyable. I'd say try for yourself before you rule them out. It's time for an updated review. The staff - is always so nice - never feel like they care less about you. Very attentive. The coffee is so fresh and amazing. I had their pour over and dulce de leche latte - both very delicious. I mean... Jose from Steelhead is serving coffee - he's the long beach staple barista!!!! We got some beans too - and cafe cuate is so good. Roast is fresh and perfect for pour overs The quality of their baked goods is almost always so consistent - I would say 99%. I've had only one instance where I was unhappy with a bake of their flatbread and they responded with such graciousness and kindness.
