I've been on the lookout for the best coffee in Long Beach and I think Colossus might just be it. Colossus is an adorable storefront on 2ND Street. I'm absolutely obsessed with their coffee menu, baked items, sandwiches, and their selection of grocery-like goods. I ordered the Midsommar caramel latte, ceasar salad sandwich on their fresh baked bread, and the strawberry rhubarb and pistachio danish (!!). I'd easily sign up for this lineup to be my last meal on earth. I even ordered a sourdough bread loaf with olives so I could ride this high for several more days. The Midsommar latte is crafted with housemade caramel, espresso, milk, and topped with sprinkles of fennel and bee pollen - the perfect finale to an already incredible drink. A friend of mine wanted to try this place out cause she lives a few blocks away. Normally we've gone to Stereoscope and it's been great. We wanted to try something new and omg... the coffee tasted like gas station coffee (where are you getting these coffee beans!?) and the loaf of bread we bought to make sandwiches for lunch was horrible. We thought it'd be really fresh they seem to make it in house. Between the coffee and bread I see no reason to ever come back here. They don't even have anywhere to have a seat and chat. Honestly, Colossus is a solid cafe and I bet they'll be booming once they finishing expanding. Still, I'm more a fan of their food than coffee. I got a honey lavender latte, as I've only tried their drip in the past. The honey lavender notes were definitely there, but the latte is much more on the milky side than coffee side, which is what I didn't like. However, their sandwich was soo good. The turkey and brie has a nice fluffy bread, a healthy portion of turkey, a mix of herbs, and this super sweet and fragrant fig mostarda, which is like a fig mustard spread. Definitely would come back for the sandwich, maybe not the coffee though. read more

Colossus used to be one of our favorite places in Long Beach for fresh bread and interesting sandwiches. Our favorite sandwich is their Turkey and Brie with fig mostarda. The Turkey and Brie sandwich has changed over the course of time as it has a less prominence of brie and fig flavors; however, this sandwich costs $16. Their star of the sandwiches are their fresh breads. Cost of lattes range from $8 to $8.50. They have some good pastries here; however, they're also priced on the higher end. I don't come as often as we did before because parking is pretty inconvenient on 2nd street and their are also prices are on the higher end. They're expanding their space to have more seating, which will be nice. At this time, you mainly have to take what you buy to go. read more

Unfortunately this will be an incomplete review of sorts because we arrived at around 10am and the pastries that I wanted to specifically try out which was the cardamom and the almond croissant were all sold out. Major sad face. Now, I know that bakeries can only keep stock what they can and I really don't know if it's right to blame or be upset, but it was still relatively early, and we just simply struck out. I did pick up a few selections that they did have, but it truly was slim pickings even though what we did snag was pretty ok--sorry, I think my mood was not the best and I can't remember what they were. It doesn't help that I recently went to a popular bakery in Pasadena with a line and another bakery in Long Beach, and both experiences were more positive and successful than this one was. I love supporting local shops on second street and Colossus is a great local coffee and pastry shop. The mornings are always busy but I think it's worth the wait. They have good lattes. I'm disappointed in their bread. I tried out their sourdough loaf and for $10 a loaf, it unfortunately doesn't come sliced. I still purchased it, as I have a serrated knife at home. This bread was so hard and tough to cut. I found it to be not worth it and couldn't cut a normal slice. I will go back but I've learned my lesson not to order their bread again. read more

Cinnamon Sugar Knot, Midsommar Latte ICED ONLY This was my first time trying out colossus after always passing by it on my walks along 2nd street. I ordered a Cinnamon Sugar Knot and a after looking at the coffee options I decided to go with the Midsommar Latte. The Cinnamon Sugar Knot was pretty yummy, it had, in my opinion, a very good distribution of sugar all along the pastry and wasn't lackluster like I feel most places are. If you are craving a sweet bite of something I recommend the Cinnamon Sugar Knot for sure. The Midsommar Latte on the other hand had a pretty presentation and at first glance looked like it would be pretty good. Sadly to me the flavor wasn't there, it tasted very milky and lacked any other flavoring. It's suppose to be a spicy Carmel as described to me by the barista but as I stated I was just milky. If you crave more of a stronger coffee taste, as I tend to personally like, i definitely would stay away from the Midsommer Latte. The service was quick and the baristas were nice. There wasn't any music playing though when I went, maybe it was paused in accident, so it was extremely quite which isn't a bad thing but perhaps playing some lo-fi music to just set a nice relaxing tone would be great. i've been meaning to try colossus for a while, i live pretty close and i always see it at the farmers market. that being said i finally tried it. came on a tuesday morning; they had a steady stream of people but nothing too crazy. seems like a weekday morning might be the move. i got a vanilla latte, the done up eggs in a basket, and the breakfast sandwich. the coffee was like a 2/5. it was basically a cup of milk. now i understand latte is typically a lot of milk, and my preference these days skews to cortado measurements, but even this was milkier than your typical latte. probably would not get again. that being said the breakfast was pretty decent. i enjoyed both the breakfast sandwich and the eggs in a basket. the sandwich had a really nice fluffy texture to the egg. and the flavors of the eggs in a basket were good. my husband really enjoyed the slice of bread for it as well. food was like a 4/5. the people working were super nice, i'd probably come back for a quick and easy breakfast but there are much better coffee shops (in my opinion) nearby. read more

Strong espresso flavor without being overpowering, and the cold foam added the smoothest natural sweetness without tasting artificial. Not only is Colossus delicious for the pastries, but also their breakfasts, sandwiches, coffee, and challah! The challah is available every Friday but they can be special ordered for holidays as well; as with a variety of other items for other holidays. Unfortunately there's really no where to sit and eat inside or out, but they are expanding and the beach is nearby. Everyone in Long Beach knows and loves this spot so if you live here and haven't tried it out, give it a shot (and yes it's a bit pricey, I wish it was a dollar or more cheaper on every item too but what can you do), and if you're driving through, it's one of our best spots so give it a go! In the past, I've come here for a morning pastry. I saw that they make sourdough pizzas and had to try! I decided to order the honey sausage pizza online. About 15 minutes later, I picked it up and it was hot and ready. The pizza tasted great - the peppers being sweet and the sausage savory. The sourdough crust fluffy with a nice chew. I go get there iced mid sommar latte at the Long Beach farmers market. I haven't had it in a few months but came to the farmers market for this latte today. What I like about mid sommar latte is that it has flennel in it. That's pretty much the only drink I get and only for the reason. Flennel is really good for digestion and bloating . I like the drink flennel tea after a meal or before bed. Love that they have that component in the latte. I' always notice a better digestion when I eat at the farmers market. Colossus is one of my favorite bakeries in Long Beach. The bakery is small with barely any sitting space but I think they're expanding to have more seating. I've only ever had their pastries but they've never disappointed. I've previously had their kouign-amann and it was savory, sweet, and crispy. For this review, I had their pan con tomate (one of my favorite things ever), which came on a soft, pillowy slice of sourdough with garlicky grated tomato and rich olive oil. Although small, definitely an exquisite savory snack. Their croissant was not as flaky as I hoped (I came near closing time) but it was still buttery and tasted amazing. The OG chocolate chip cookies was delicious was soft, chewy (in a good way), and abundantly studded with milk chocolate chunks. I'd love to see a dark chocolate version because the milk chocolate proved a bit too sweet for me, but I still ate the whole thing (: Colossus is a fantastic bakery and I can't wait to go back to try their sandwiches, their pizzas, and their other pastries! read more

I tried their breakfast sandwich with herb bake eggs, topped with Muenster cheese on house bred nd added bacon . The only problem is the sandwich was over $20.00. A price point which buys a hefty meal in most beach communities. I added a simple drink realizing this is a bakery so I will entertain being this haphazard with cash when I feel like it. Went in for a pizza randomly one day. Had a great experience. The pepperoni was definitely in the spicy side and the pizza had a fantastic crust to it, very flavorful. So about two weeks later, decided to treat myself to another pizza from there place, and unfortunately it was burned and lacked flavor and the crust was like plain bread. I genuinely want to give this place 5 stars, because the bread and croissants are exceptional, the aesthetic is beautiful, the wine selection is thoughtfully curated, the pastry offerings are great, and the cute gift knick-knacks add a really nice touch. On product and atmosphere alone, this would easily be a 5-star bakery. Unfortunately, after three separate visits, the experience continues to fall short due to the staff. No matter the time--morning or mid-afternoon--the energy is consistently the same: no smiles, no warmth, no sense of welcome. Everyone appears grumpy and disengaged, almost as if they're too cool to be serving baked goods. If that's the case, it may be worth reconsidering the role. On one occasion, I walked in 30 minutes before closing, and the ovens were already turned off. When I asked if my pastry could be warmed, I was made to feel like an inconvenience simply for asking. Today, after looking over the counter and noticing that not a single person appeared happy to be there, I chose to walk out. I'm not sure if this is a management issue or if the staff isn't being supported in a positive work environment, but it absolutely translates to the customer experience--which is unfortunate, given how strong the product is. The success of any business depends on its customers, and first impressions (and repeated impressions) matter. It would be wise to address these issues early if the goal is long-term success. I'll happily continue to recommend the bread--but I truly hope the service eventually matches the quality of what's being made. read more
