I've been a longtime fan and customer of Colossus and was super bummed when they had to shut down their seating. I was so excited to try out their new and improved space for dinner! The decor is cozy and chic, and I like that they kept it spacious instead of cramming a ton of tables and chairs in. I especially loved the little table lamps! Our server was very nice and helpful when we had questions. Caesar salad: I LOVED this. Perfect balance of flavors with perfect crunch. Word of warning is that it is anchovy heavy (including anchovy filets on top), so if you like to pretend the anchovy aspect of Caesar salads doesn't exist, this might not be for you! Roasted chicken: Loved the crunch on this too, and the salad and polenta were nice additions. I think the polenta was my favorite part of this dish lol. Kale pistou pizza (asked for no onions): My least favorite dish. We didn't realize it was vegan but as someone who generally likes vegan food, it just lacked flavor and felt very dry overall. The sourdough crust was good, at least. Peach mess dessert: Omg, the star of the show! Such an amazing dessert top to bottom, I loved the mix of textures and flavors. I could eat this every day! I probably would've given this 4 stars due to the pizza being that bland, but the dessert really elevated this whole meal. Can't wait to see all their different menus throughout the seasons! Lovely brunch at the newly opened cafe portion of Colossus bakery. Stopped by the bakery first to grab their Cardamom roll. Which was delicious very "cardamomy" flavored, crispy layers. Dusted with Swiss pearl sugar. Just really yummy. Saw the almond croissant. Said oh will stop again on our way out. BIG mistake. Of course they were gone by then. Opted for the sticky toffee bun. She recommended warming before eating. What a nice little treat to share with my husband after dinner! Back to the cafe. Newly added as an adjoining space was vacated next to the bakery. Industrial modern interior. Spacious with 20(?) tables. Partners opted for the 2 egg breakfast. Eggs cooked perfectly as ordered. One ordered an omelet. Beautifully made. Would make Jacques Pepin or Thomas Keller proud. Thick sliced bacon. Thick sliced multigrain toast. Small side of spring mix salad adorned with watermelon radish. Very nice entree if you're an egg lover. Shared the French fries. They're like the ones my grandma made. Thick sliced potatoes deep fried. Crispy outside. Soft inside. Brings back pleasant memories. Get these if you're a French fry fan. The mushroom dip (think French dip with variety of sautéed mushroom in lieu of beef) was GREAT! Mushroom not overcooked, Muenster cheese draped atop. Crusty baguette bread. Although the dipping sauce was vegan based, the roasted mushroom base added enough umami for a deeply flavored dip. My only complaint was the clusters of oyster mushrooms were laid horizontally following the length of baguette. Which presents well but was a bit challenging to bite through. I dunno, maybe my teeth aren't sharp. Overall an outstanding dish. So my dilemma now is when to return to try the other menu items which didn't make my first cut. Colossus is a place that I can rely on for real, homemade, and heavily cared for sourdough bread. Like some reviews say, the workers can definitely be rude at times and give off a bad vibe, but the sourdough is so good that I just deal with it. Really thankful for this place. Even bought a shirt. Colossus was recommended to my SIL, Alexa M, so we headed in for breakfast on a recent Saturday morning. I was pleased there was not a line to get seated and noted there is an entire side for the bakery / coffee take-out folks too. I went for the 2 egg breakfast and Alexa had the croissant egg sandwich. She ordered bacon and their special sweet potato hot sauce on the side as well. It was very good but worth noting they charge for it! Service was decent albeit a little bit slow and there was some confusion about her bacon, but it happens. We both had specialty coffee drinks that we enjoyed. We left caffeinated, happy and with full bellies, which fueled a bit of a walk around the neighborhood and some pickleball before my flight home. Colossus has become a staple in Belmont Shore providing pastries, breads, breakfast sandwiches, pizza, and of course great coffee drinks. They recently expanded to the space next door to expand service and hours! For a short while, Colossus had chairs and tables outside. I went at least weekly to enjoy a casual breakfast. The tables and chairs went away as LB City doesn't allow without a public bathroom! Now Colossus has a sit down restaurant, full table service along with two very nice restrooms! They also have plans to bring back rhe casual sidewalk seating! We went for breakfast. Serving some of their regular (and beloved items) and also some new ones, like a French Style Omelet and Stuffed Grench Toast! You can still order any kind of coffee or tea drink! Many of us have our regular favorite drinks! The restaurant is open from 8am-9pm. They serve breakfast/lunch then after 4pm dinner including their beloved pizza! That's my only complaint here, I want pizza for lunch, or even breakfast, hint, hint, hint! Service was excellent! Sydney was our server and he was very friendly and helpful. Although the menu is limited, you want it all, hard to decide and he really helped! Sydney surprised my friend with her order and she was thrilled. Great pick too! For drinks we ordered our usual and as always made just how we like them. I ordered a Matcha Latte, my latest usual. Nice taste and texture and one of the best around! My friend ordered her usual, Lavendar Honey Latte, and enjoyed it. It was nice having our favorite drinks in coffee cups vs to go paper! For food, I ordered my usual the Breafast Croissant with Bacon. IYKYK their croissants are amazing, then add the eggs, cheese, and bacon, it's just the bomb. Although it's my usual, again, getting it served on an actual plate and being able to sit down and enjoy it piping hot, just special! My friend had the French Style Omelet and definitely enjoyed it. So excited to try their new restaurant that just opened a few days ago! Service was spectacular. I'm always hesitant to try a restaurant when it first opens since it usually takes a few months to iron out the details..but that's not the case! Our server was Sydney and he was amazing! I couldn't decide what to order-so I let him decide and he did an awesome job-I got the French omelette. Ambiance is clean and bright and minimalist The honey lavender cappuccino could've been a tad more lavender-y. It was subtle...but maybe that's just me. The French omelette was really clean and cheesy and the bread served with it was so fluffy and freshly baked.. it came with a super fresh salad with a very light vinaigrette. Went to Colossus's first night of dinner service. Everything was very solid... I have a ton of caveats, but I have faith it will only get better from here. You can tell the staff were a little nervous, which was to be expected. For example, we sat right by the kitchen and they came from behind us and awkwardly placed our food on the table instead of going to the front of the table like usual. This felt pretty janky and normally I wouldn't note something like this, but it felt unpolished. The wine list is decently expansive and had a wide range of prices, which is great! I got an orange wine (Russian River Valley) which was $11 for the glass; way better than a $20 cocktail. You MUST order the lamb belly souvlaki, that was the best bite of the night. It was extremely tender, yet the skin was lightly crisp. I've never had lamb belly before and now I wonder why I never see it on menus. One of the co-owners, Nicholas, came out and told us that his wife and co-owner, Kristin, is part-Greek, so she brought that inspo to the menu...I'm glad! I honestly think lamb belly would be an amazing main course...wow, wow wow. Next, I am adding this to the review because my friend went the day after: they said the pizza is REALLY good. I can attest to this because just about every table had it. The pizza has no flop, there's a nice char on the crust, and it has the perfect amount of "grease" you want in a pizza. The plus is that the cheese pizza is $22 which is way cheaper than the steak frites or roast chicken mains. Now I'm kind of regretting not getting it, but I'll come back and taste the rest of the menu. (I will update the review when I try the pizza). We also got the "bread service" with rosemary focaccia bread. It came with a side of olive oil and a very high quality butter. It was okay... kind of disappointing for a place that specializes in bread; it had a fluffy interior but a little too hard than I like on the exterior. Not enough rosemary flavor either. We had the Panzanella salad that was perfectly balanced between the tomatoes and stracciatella cheese, but the country bread "croutons" were a weird texture hybrid of too chewy and hard. The charred eggplant with beans dish was hearty and solid - it felt like a proper winter-y dish, but I wouldn't order it again though. The Caesar roast chicken could use some work, especially for $34. It was served on polenta with charred greens and didn't come through enough in flavor or texture. The chicken should have had a nice pan sauce, as the breast was a little dry. I saw other tables get the steak frites, which made me want to order a side of fries. They were visually very good but was about as good as diner fries. This is a huge miss. I'm hoping this gets a massive upgrade. It had no crunch and tasted slightly raw. Also, no side of any sauce whatsoever, either - should at least come with an aioli. I think your mileage will vary based on what you order. This is what I think would get a better review: get a pizza or two, mushroom polenta, and the spicy feta dip... I need to try the dessert next time as well. Although my review above sounds very rough around the edges, there's a lot of opportunity for polish. I still give it a 4! Total came to $126 including tip, which is pretty good for a date night with a TON of food. I would order less than I did, it's too much for two! read more

Great coffee, yummy pastries & cookies!!8 got the Midsommar Latte & a regular vanilla latte hot. I got the huge salted chocolate chip cookie which was to die for. I didn't get it warmed because it already looked soft and I didn't want it to be all over me if I got it warmed (too messy). I just love the flavor of the Midsommar latte it's like earthy, it has espresso, house-made anise caramel, cold foam, fennel, and bee pollen. Ps. First time stopping in a bit after noon, picking up whatever was still available. The Jalapeno & Cheese Levain ($12) immediately caught my eye, as some of my favorite memories of artisan bread is around hot cheese bread from Wisconsin. Service was OK, with simple interaction. Brought it home to eat some of it for dinner. It was OK, a bit dense and spongey, not much cheese flavor, certainly nothing that would catch my eye if served at a restaurant. I do think it would taste better if toasted, as the crust was the best part of the bread. Next time, I will try the simpler Country Levain or maybe just a baguette...both of which had some of the well browned crispness that I was looking for. read more

I ordered a couple of pastries online to pick up later since they usually run out of some of the favorites. Headed down to the shop and saw for the first time their recently opened restaurant adjacent to the bakery. Lovely decor and ambience. I arrived around 2:30 (the bakery section closes at 3) and was the only customer at that time. The bakery is small and compact. They have a merchandise section- clothing and pantry/gift items, a reach in fridge with drinks, and the counters with pastry case and coffee service. I saw they still had a few pastries, so had to nab the huge pieces of rosemary and olive focaccia! The gentleman helping us was friendly and helpful; we also chatted a bit with the nice young lady in the restaurant. The garlic herb scone I purchased was very dense and herbaceous. I could see it paired with grapes, eggs or soup. The focaccia was moist, a little oily but yummy. The rosemary flavor and herb sprinkling, though, was very faint. Would have loved more! The olive slice was very flavorful. The standout was the cardamom bun! Soft and perfect amount of spice. I enjoyed that with a jasmine tea later and it's my new obsession. Prices are a little high but the quality is worth it for me as an occasional treat! read more

after longstanding grief with colossus (see my last review), i was intrigued by their new restaurant and decided to check it out. the place is really cute. the decor is very tastefully done! loved that for sure. our server was friendly but the service was a bit on the slower side. the check came a little delayed as well. i also love that it is an open layout with their bakery next door as for the food, we got a french omelette with a side salad and toast and the mushroom polenta dish. i didn't know what to expect for the mushroom and polenta dish and that was actually our favorite dish of the two. i thought i would get a whole discs of polenta since that's how i usually get served polenta but this was more like a deconstructed polenta that gave kind of a rich grits vibe and it was comforting and different. the mushroom was also sautéed perfectly with many crispy strands. the omelette was a total let down though. it was completely overdone and rubbery. kind of sad when that is the main of the dish. i don't like holding this kind of feedback to myself, so i told the server - who received it kindly and told me that other guests have informed him of this as well. they really need to get that right if this is not the first time! another odd element of the dish was that the bread had some oil or butter on it but it tasted a little gamey or something? it wasn't a pleasant butter taste. it tasted like it had been on the same pan that had some bacon or lard cooked in it. while my feedback was received with kindness - it was kind of a bummer that we didn't get any kind of customer recovery. a nominal discount or even a little cookie or pastry would have been a nice gesture. i don't think customer recovery is their forté (which is similar to my last few interactions involving bad service/food quality issues in the past) will i come back? yea, ill still give them a chance since one of the dishes was stellar but i hope they can continue to work on customer service read more

I've been on the lookout for the best coffee in Long Beach and I think Colossus might just be it. Colossus is an adorable storefront on 2ND Street. I'm absolutely obsessed with their coffee menu, baked items, sandwiches, and their selection of grocery-like goods. I ordered the Midsommar caramel latte, ceasar salad sandwich on their fresh baked bread, and the strawberry rhubarb and pistachio danish (!!). I'd easily sign up for this lineup to be my last meal on earth. I even ordered a sourdough bread loaf with olives so I could ride this high for several more days. The Midsommar latte is crafted with housemade caramel, espresso, milk, and topped with sprinkles of fennel and bee pollen - the perfect finale to an already incredible drink. I've been visiting this cafe since moving to Long Beach and their baked goods are really good, so my friends and I decided to try out their new restaurant. Parking is really easy around 12. We placed a reservation for 12:30 brunch but it wasn't busy at all. The seating is really nice and the restaurant is so clean and spacious! Lots of seating to go around! The servers were so so nice! Even the servers who weren't assigned to our table kept checking on us. I got the chicken caeser sandwich and was so delightfully surprised. The bread is fluffy and light, the lettuce is fresh, and the chicken is so juicy and moist. I also really loved the dressing, which had just the right amount of flavor. My friend got the BLT and said the bacon was really crispy and the sauce was good. Overall really nice restaurant! Would love to see them grow and I would love to come back for dinner! read more

My friend and I came to Colossus for breakfast and unfortunately left extremely disappointed. The atmosphere is quaint and cute, but the food and, more importantly, the way our concern was handled really overshadowed the experience. My friend ordered the Chicken Caesar Salad Sandwich. What arrived was essentially a chicken thigh with a couple pieces of wilted lettuce and Caesar dressing. It did not resemble what either of us would reasonably expect from something described as a "Chicken Caesar Salad Sandwich." The menu also did not make it clear that the chicken was dark meat or that the dish was essentially a chicken sandwich with Caesar-inspired elements rather than a chicken Caesar salad served as a sandwich. We explained to our server that it wasn't what we expected and sent it back. What was particularly disappointing was that no alternative was offered and there was no attempt to make the situation right. When the bill arrived, the untouched and returned sandwich was still charged in full. When we asked about having it removed or discounted, the response became argumentative. We were told that it is one of their most popular items, that people love it, and that based on their restaurant experience, they do not remove or discount items from the bill. Whether other customers enjoy the sandwich wasn't really relevant to our concern, and the interaction felt unnecessarily defensive rather than hospitable. We understand that sometimes you order something and simply don't love it. Our disappointment was less about personal taste and more about the lack of clarity in the menu description and how the situation was handled after we brought it to their attention. With so many excellent breakfast and brunch options in Belmont Shore and throughout Long Beach, we unfortunately won't be returning. read more

Colossus used to be one of our favorite places in Long Beach for fresh bread and interesting sandwiches. Our favorite sandwich is their Turkey and Brie with fig mostarda. The Turkey and Brie sandwich has changed over the course of time as it has a less prominence of brie and fig flavors; however, this sandwich costs $16. Their star of the sandwiches are their fresh breads. Cost of lattes range from $8 to $8.50. They have some good pastries here; however, they're also priced on the higher end. I don't come as often as we did before because parking is pretty inconvenient on 2nd street and their are also prices are on the higher end. They're expanding their space to have more seating, which will be nice. At this time, you mainly have to take what you buy to go. read more

Unfortunately this will be an incomplete review of sorts because we arrived at around 10am and the pastries that I wanted to specifically try out which was the cardamom and the almond croissant were all sold out. Major sad face. Now, I know that bakeries can only keep stock what they can and I really don't know if it's right to blame or be upset, but it was still relatively early, and we just simply struck out. I did pick up a few selections that they did have, but it truly was slim pickings even though what we did snag was pretty ok--sorry, I think my mood was not the best and I can't remember what they were. It doesn't help that I recently went to a popular bakery in Pasadena with a line and another bakery in Long Beach, and both experiences were more positive and successful than this one was. I love supporting local shops on second street and Colossus is a great local coffee and pastry shop. The mornings are always busy but I think it's worth the wait. They have good lattes. I'm disappointed in their bread. I tried out their sourdough loaf and for $10 a loaf, it unfortunately doesn't come sliced. I still purchased it, as I have a serrated knife at home. This bread was so hard and tough to cut. I found it to be not worth it and couldn't cut a normal slice. I will go back but I've learned my lesson not to order their bread again. read more

The coffee/matcha game is on the weaker side but that's just not why I go there. I feel like bakeries never prioritize coffee and just hire staff to mostly sell breads, and then they train them on coffee making. They need to hire exceptional baristas to make coffee a standout item, not an afterthought. I'm not going to knock down stars for that because I go there as a bakery. Pretty disappointed. Based on the quality of their bread I expected more from the restaurant side. It started with the 15 minute wait while we stared at half dozen empty tables all clean and ready to go. When we finally got seated it was at one of those empty tables. I Had the drip coffee which the server proudly stated was from a local partner coffee roaster. It was sour. She brought a fresh brewed cup. Still sour. So I stuck with the room temperature water. (Yep, room temp). I was semi thrilled to see their French omelette on the menu so I ordered it. Their chef needs to take a food trip to France (or maybe Ubuntu) because this was not a a French omelette. The most basic premise of a French omelette is slow cooking over low heat so the eggs don't color and stay soft and creamy. These eggs had plenty of color, had a crisp (not soft) texture and had the taste of overheating. I could have just gone to a regular breakfast joint if I wanted an overcooked omelette, and it least it would have been meal sized. The salad was nothing special. The toast was very good. My husband had the Caesar chicken sandwich. There was nothing stand out about this sandwich. After breakfast we ordered the special dessert. It was on the specials menu (which consisted of two items). Oddly, despite their specifically bringing the specials menu to our table (we didn't ask for it) the specials were only for the evening. Umm, ok, why did you bring me the menu? So we ordered the kouign amann. It was oddly served upside down so the stumpy bottom was facing up and the crispy top of the muffin was down on the plate. Complete lack of attention to detail. How did they think an upside down, 7 dollar pastry slapped on a plate would be perceived by the customer? As I write this I'm still hungry and drinking the coffee i made at home. I'm not going back. read more

Cinnamon Sugar Knot, Midsommar Latte ICED ONLY This was my first time trying out colossus after always passing by it on my walks along 2nd street. I ordered a Cinnamon Sugar Knot and a after looking at the coffee options I decided to go with the Midsommar Latte. The Cinnamon Sugar Knot was pretty yummy, it had, in my opinion, a very good distribution of sugar all along the pastry and wasn't lackluster like I feel most places are. If you are craving a sweet bite of something I recommend the Cinnamon Sugar Knot for sure. The Midsommar Latte on the other hand had a pretty presentation and at first glance looked like it would be pretty good. Sadly to me the flavor wasn't there, it tasted very milky and lacked any other flavoring. It's suppose to be a spicy Carmel as described to me by the barista but as I stated I was just milky. If you crave more of a stronger coffee taste, as I tend to personally like, i definitely would stay away from the Midsommer Latte. The service was quick and the baristas were nice. There wasn't any music playing though when I went, maybe it was paused in accident, so it was extremely quite which isn't a bad thing but perhaps playing some lo-fi music to just set a nice relaxing tone would be great. Have been going to the cafe for a while now, but just tried the restaurant side today. Exceeded my expectations.... the chicken caeser salad sandwich was the perfect grilled chicken in a mustardy dressing. Bread... toasted to perfection. My new favorite sandwich. The brioche french toast was the perfect amount of sweet and moist. I usually don't even like French toast. Honestly this meal was best thing I've eaten recently. Will be back for dinner! read more

Not only is Colossus delicious for the pastries, but also their breakfasts, sandwiches, coffee, and challah! The challah is available every Friday but they can be special ordered for holidays as well; as with a variety of other items for other holidays. Unfortunately there's really no where to sit and eat inside or out, but they are expanding and the beach is nearby. Everyone in Long Beach knows and loves this spot so if you live here and haven't tried it out, give it a shot (and yes it's a bit pricey, I wish it was a dollar or more cheaper on every item too but what can you do), and if you're driving through, it's one of our best spots so give it a go! PS. They don't have stamp cards but they do offer loyalty points whenever you visit! read more

In the past, I've come here for a morning pastry. I saw that they make sourdough pizzas and had to try! I decided to order the honey sausage pizza online. About 15 minutes later, I picked it up and it was hot and ready. The pizza tasted great - the peppers being sweet and the sausage savory. The sourdough crust fluffy with a nice chew. Inside the cafe, there's pastries to choose from a small ingredient gift items too. I'd definitely come back to try another pizza! read more

Remember how I mentioned the olive loaf I picked up for my father-in-law that one time? Well, he loved it so much that now any time I see him, I make an early morning stop to Colossus beforehand to pick up one for him; he says it's the best he's ever had, and casually mentions it on the regular. When I asked him for Christmas ideas this year, it was the only thing on his list. :) He is really hoping that eventually, the ladies open a store in/near Moorpark, where he lives - but in the meantime, I never wonder what to bring with me when I visit: olive loaf for him, champagne for her. ;) read more
