Food: We ordered the deep dish double pepp, regular cheese, Cajun fries, house ceasar salad, and the swirled gelato (chocolate/vanilla). The deep dish is a lot of dough, but it is tasty dough! Fluffy, cheesy, with a CRAZY cheese pull...If you're worried about getting too full don't order this one but 10/10 the regular cheese was great, quality cheese, not too crispy or soft, a solid choice 8/10. The Cajun fries were just ok, hot and crispy but definitely had better 6/10. House ceasar salad was just good but not groundbreaking, the lettuce was fresh and crispy, the parm is freshly grated, the dressing seems homemade but have had better. The serving size was a little small for a family, and it didn't have croutons, it felt like a little something was missing 6/10. The swirled gelato was delicious and if you ask to "make it cute" they will add sprinkles on top! 9/10 service: You may be wondering, if the food was not all 10'a across the board, why 5 stars? The service. Specifically Skylar (shout out to you Skylar!) She was so sweet, attentive, and her personality was so bubbly. The kitchen made an extra order of hot honey brussels sprouts and she kindly offered it to us (spoiler... it ended up being the favorite dish for our family of 4 for the meal! 10/10!) Ambiance: The ambiance is a modern diner type vibe w/ retro details including the gorgeous stained glass lamps hanging above the booths. Such a cozy place. Very very busy and very loud filled with families, couples, friends, and everyone in between (but this didn't bother us at all) :) Wait time: We came on a Friday night at 7:30 with a reservation and the place was overflowing, filled with people waiting to be seated inside, outside in front, and trailing out around the building. I would not recommend coming at this time because it seemed like the craziest dinner rush. It seemed that around 8:15pm everyone was seated and the place really calmed down. It took us about 10 minutes past our reserved time to get seated (no big deal but something to be noted) Pricing: At first glance the prices looked a little steep as compared to your standard pizza shop but after looking at the bill everything looked very reasonable, total was $113 for a family of 4 before tip for 2 pizzas, 2 sodas, a family salad, fries, and 2 gelatos (fair!)

I like pizza--different styles and different interpretations. They say Mooney's serves up a Midwest-style pie. When I visit a place for the first time, I order pepperoni pizza. It gives me a baseline for comparison to other places. I chose the standard crust and cup pepperoni. Pan pizzas and flat pepperoni are also available. I enjoyed the perimeter crust. Unfortunately, the center of the pie was soggy. The sauce had a good flavor to it. The amount of cheese applied was reasonable. The amount of peperoni applied was generous. Future visits will tell if the soggy center was a one-time fluke or regular feature. This structure was once a neighborhood coffee shop. The remodeled store has resulted in a stylish, new dining environment. Service was good. We arrived after peak dinner time, so getting a seat at the counter as walk-ins was easy.

Finally got a reservation at Mooney's and it did not disappoint! For a Wednesday night it was honestly pretty lively. Our rezi was for their dining room which is a little quieter but great for babies/high chairs. To order we got the house bread, cesar salad, and two pizzas: pineapple specialty and regular cheese. Appetizers were on point! Legit cesar salad with fresh dressing. House bread stole the show. Pizzas, we actually liked the standard cheese better! It wasn't super cheesy but went perfect with ranch. BOMB crust. Pineapple sounds better than it is--the salsa just doesn't feel right. Doesn't help that it came out waaay later than the cheese. Lastly custard is delicious. Overall would definitely recommend this place! It can be busy but pizza and menu options are unmatched!

First time in and came here on a whim on a Friday at 4:30. Happily found some seats at the bar and were greeting by a sleuth of friendly and helpful staff. Since we were going out after and didn't want leftovers, took the advice of our bartender and got a small pizza and an app. Perfect amount. We started with meatballs. Super flavorful but the temp wasn't as hot as you'd expect for fresh out of the oven. Would have loved for them to check with a thermometer before serving, but they were still delicious. Pizza: went with the Fancy Cheese. OMFG! This was incredible and a pizza I will be craving daily. The bottom crust had a perfect crunch when you bite into it and the outer crust, pillowy and a perfect vessel to scoop up a side of their pesto ranch. (Thanks to the staff for that rec too!) The only let down (aside from luke warm meatballs) was my beer glass. For a place that prides itself of beer and being owned by a fellow cicerone (I'm one too), was that the glass was not "beer clean". No, there should not be bubbles on the glass because that's actually microscopic dirt that the beer is clinging to. The space is so welcoming and has a great flow to it. The parking is abundant. Absolutely will be back!

And we are back....... Today we celebrated my son's birthday and this was the spot he wanted to come try.... The place was packed we had reservations and only waited 5 min tops to get seated. Our server Jake was great, excellent customer service. Our food was delicious we need to come back for more!!!!!

I was craving pizza & my friend @cheftiffanythomas suggested Mooney's Pizza. Before hand she let me know this place is packed and she booked reservations. We shared a combo between 3 people total, a Cesar salad, & meatballs. Everything was savory and filling. The ambiance of this place is rather unique as well. If you crossed an episode from the hit series Cheers with a 1980's Pizza Hut; you would get Mooney's Pizza. It's rather nostalgic for the millennial crowd. With reservations we did wait about 10 to 15 mins. Keep that in mind if you're going without. We noticed right away it was crowded, and people come here in large groups as well. We were vicariously enjoying the view of the pipping hot pizzas walking out from the steamy kitchen. Everything looked so good we were already making plans on what to order for our second time around. The lighting in this establishment is very much relaxed and pleasing. Right away I noticed that the lamps were similar to those from the 1980's Pizza Hut restaurants with the stained glass. The Supreme Pan Pizza we ordered was packed with plenty of vegetables, the edges are nice and crispy as well. Though we loved the pizza we would have liked it with a bit more char on top, like the classic. We were also craving a plain sparkling water, such as a San Pellegrino, so far it has t been added to the menu. They have plenty of prebiotic sodas, beer, non-alcoholic beer, etc. The Cesar salad is fresh with plenty of romaine and grated fresh parm; with just a bit more pepper and bread crumbs it would be perfection. The meatballs were amazing, and drenched with the right amount of sauce. We absolutely loved this new Pizza Tavern & we're looking forward to coming back.

Overall great experience as they were getting up and running. Inside is very pizza parlor vibes It was extremely warm inside and I had to ask for ice water multiple times since we were being given tepid water and our poor waiter finally gave us a carafe full!! Overall really kind and accommodating. The pizza was great! Chewy crust, great toppings. I would bring others back in the future! Highly recommend ending the meal with soft serve. I had cherry and chocolate swirl!

Mooney's Pizza is a new pizzeria on the border of East Long Beach, Los Alamitos, Cypress, and Hawaiian Gardens and it offers really good pizza in a space that's evokes the vibes of 90s pizza parlors. The pizzas are top quality as you have a nice buttery, glassy crust with a really nice bite/chew that can only come from a fully developed fermentation. I ordered a 14" pan size of their "fancy cheese" pizza, which came with a rich tomato sauce, fresh basil, and high moisture cheese. In the past five years, a bunch of really great pizzerias have set up in Long Beach; however, what's unique about this place is that you can dine in here with your family at their full-service restaurant. On Sunday night it was quite busy; however, we snagged a same-day reservation on Resy for 8:30pm. For appetizers, I also ordered their house bread and meatballs. The bread was crispy and airy and was served with an addictive calabrian chili honey butter. The meatballs were juicy from their mix of chuck, shortrib, brisket, and pancetta. The important thing is that the food was actually as good as it sounded on paper. Ultimately, that's the reason that I think that this is a great pizza spot! They have great ingredients, they aren't cutting corners with the fermentation of their breads and pizzas, they have a nostalgic space that can easily host your family or soccer team (if you make a reservation), and the quality of the pizza is great. I'll definitely be back and I'll consider making a reservation to bring in family!

Beer Menu - good selection!

Definitely get a reservation! People who didn't get a reservation asked how long the wait was for a table of 2, table of 4, etc., and it was at least 70-90 minutes. Bar seating is typically full. We waited 25 minutes beyond our reservation time to get seated for our table of 2. We ordered the pineapple al pastor pizza and it came out pretty fast! It was missing something, and we realized it didn't really have any sauce. This one should come with a side of marinara or just have sauce on it in general. Otherwise, it was made well with a thin and tasty crust. Some portions of it had too much crust and not enough toppings, though. We ordered a strawberry and malt chocolate swirl frozen custard and ended up only getting served a full malt chocolate one since the strawberry thing broke. That was disappointing, and our custard was already melting by the time we got it. And nope, it wasn't comp'd. They have a pretty good beer selection that rotates daily and my IPA was tasty!

Half pepp cups, half garlic-olives. Two pizza connoisseurs.

Great food, great service. I ordered the house bread, which was light and crispy on the outside and this soft chewy texture inside. It was so good! The buffalo wings were perfect- well sauced, moist, good amount. The ranch it came with was delicious. We got half pepperoni and half garlic and olives. I can only speak for the pepperoni side. That crust was really crispy and flavorful with a light crisp. It was good. I would have preferred a little more sauce all over each slice. It was more like dollops of sauce around the pie. Dang this place was packed and loud. It was a great neighborhood environment, but a little too much for my senses. This is definitely a family spot tho! Omg I almost forgot about the frozen custard!! Don't forget to get the frozen custard. Thick, rich and creamy. I want more.

I love Italian pizza w chewy crust and my fave pizza and pasta restaurant is Spaghettini SB. I passed Mooney's pizza a couple of times from the Y Lakewood on the way home. I bookmarked on Yelp and decided to go today. They open at 4 Mon to Fri except on weekend. Hard to wait for my late lunch or early dinner at 4. I got there 15 mins early and checked the area. This is located on the corner of big strip mall, where are Good Will, dollar tree, and grocery market, and etc. My first impression about the Mooney' was not good. I was waiting until 4:01, still closed. I tapped the door 3 times, then someone opened the door. They were not ready to welcome the customers after 4. When we sat the table, little tiny gnat flies around our table. Bothering me a lot. We got the dark Lager from the bar, the same tiny bug tried to sit in our beers. Very Annoying... I asked the server we want to move other table. Even thou we moved toward left side but that bug bothered us. And also, our table itself was so tiny for our pizza orders. I wanted to test and order at least 3 different pizzas, they barely fitted on our table. Not comfortable at all. Our server forgot to bring the iced water until I paid the bill. I didn't ask him at all. I didn't care. My hubby kept drinking the beers and I took my water from home just in case. Let's talk about the pizza. I went over the reviews on Yelp for 2 days and noticed the flavor and quality of pizzas here looked great. But it was not great taste for me as soon as I bit my first custom cheese, mushroom, pepperoni pizza. Way way too salty....OMG! What the hell? Seemed like they poured the sea salt by accident. And I tasted my curious pizza called pineapple al pastor, it gave me only sour taste due to the sliced onion pickles. For me, I love love sliced onions as pizza topping. But they were sour pickles. I have no idea why they put the onion pickles instead of raw sliced onions. Obviously I was skeptical for double pepperoni pizza. Same marinara sauce w lots of salt and tiny round pepperonis and little bigger flat pepperonis, that was all for this pizza. Why people said it was great? Wow! Wow! I wanted a new pizza place close from home to comfort me after work. Very dissapointed! Who commented the service was good? And the pineapple pizza tastes great???? To be honest, the 3 pizzas I ordered for the first time here were less than 3 stars. I don't want to recommend here. Only one thing I liked was draft beers, we got 2 dark lagers and 1 house lager. The location was so close from our home but the pizza was not met my expectation today.

TLDR: Mooney's Pizza is that old school pizza sit down restaurant with new age thinking. You will be paying a premium so be mindful of that. Why: well let's be honest here, $30 for a large isn't something that can be affordable for everyday families but it sure is nice here and then. You will enjoy the quality of the dough, the flavor, the options, and just plain ol' attentive customer service. So when it all balances out, this is a place that you will visit here and there with friends/family for nice events. Other Details: TRY THE CUSTARD, it was delicious and a great way to close out the meal. I personally had the chocolate custard and enjoyed it a lot. Parking is easy within the strip mall area.

This place I found on Instagram, and for the first time it didn't let me down! Its a decent sized place on the corner of Wardlow and Los Alamitos, with a weird way of walking into the restaurant. Its very popular, and my wife and I went on a Thursday night with friends. Thankfully we had a reservation so i highly stress you make one or you will be waiting an hour at best. The restaurant is very old school looking. It reminds me of pizza joints in the 80's with those Tiffany lapshades that say Mooney's on each of them. Very cool to be taken back to the good old days. The help there is really great. We had a guy named Kyle looking after us and he filled in all the blanks that we had. My wife and I decided to keep the pizza small and try other items on the menu. One was the Buffalo wings that came in a set of eight and they were bigger than average. The Ranch dressing that came with them was good. The Caesar salad was really good too. Came in a small bowl, but there was enough for my wife and I to have enough of. Lots of cheese and the dressing was very tasteful. The pizza was the complete star of the night. We got a small pepperoni and mushroom and the crust was light but crunchy. The flavors were a beautiful symphony of the sauce, cheese, pepperoni, mushroom combined to a glorious eat. I was quite happy that they had oregano on hand, because having it on any pizza is a massive plus. The beer i wasnt too wild about. Their house lager tasted like a summer blend, which wasnt a bad thing, but it didnt come to comparison of just having a Coor's Light or Pabst Blue Ribbon. Either one of those with a slice of pizza, would have made it all phenomenal. They had plenty of choices of craft beer, but none of them spoke to me. Aside from that, I would highly recommend driving out for this one. It is a great experience from beginning to end and I will definitely be going for a bigger pizza and trying out their meatballs next time.

Ask the Community - Mooney’s Pizza

Do you plan on getting vegan cheese? Sorry not interested in a tomato pie.

Hi, Hal Mooney here, owner of Mooney's Pizza Tavern. We don't currently have any plans to add Vegan cheese, but thanks for asking. We're always listening to our guests and future guests and always considering new options!

Hi I am trying to place an order to pick up, can I email the order? The phone system is not available.

To the best of my knowledge, they are not taking take out orders yet. You could however sit at the bar, order, and tell them you would like your pizza to go.

Do you have vegan cheese?

We do not. But we do have a delicious vegan tomato pie.

Anything gluten free?

Yup! Gluten free pizzas along with GF apps, salads and desserts.

Is dining allowed in the outdoor patio if we have our dog?

Yep! We love furry friends on the patio.

Do I need a reservation?

Yes and no. If you want to avoid a wait, then definitely. If you have time, grab a drink at the bar and wait for a seat.

Has anyone had the beer can chicken?

We'd be happy to come down again in traffic, because it's absolutely worth the drive here. Some find the pizza sizes small or the prices high in comparison to your average pizza joint - but your average, everyday pizza place in California is just...ew. Their crust is very thin, Neapolitan style in a brick oven, beautiful and a little chewy, slightly-charred from the brick oven. Amazing texture. Traditionalists, so we just got the Margherita and Bianco, adding some mushrooms and a drizzle of truffle. SOO good. We also tried the fried zucchini blossoms, which were very light and not oily at all. Caesar salad was very delicious and fresh, also had the octopus, which was perfectly grilled and like eating steak. To finish, we had some amazing coffee with tiramisu. Wow. Not usually a fan, but their tiramisu was super light, not overly sweet, and super good. Thanks to our wonderful server, Diana ! Super friendly and everything came out quickly. Deep Dish pizza is one of my fave things to eat, but I don't find places that serve it or at least do it well. I grew up eating deep dish pizza out here on the west coast, so I'm more used to and like the west coast style, as opposed to the true Chicago style where they cut their thin crust pizzas in little squares. It's a pie, cut it in triangles like a pie! They use too much cornmeal in the crust too, but that's just me. I first had deep dish stuffed pizza at Zachary's in Berkeley, so I kinda compare everything else to that. It was another long day of work and the crew just wanted to stay at the hotel and have me go out and get them some of this deep dish pizza. Ok, I'll keep the crew happy. I go in and order and it's very nice inside. Kinda a little upscale over some pizza parlor joint. I get 2 medium Chicago Classic, I think that was what it was called. Mostly it was sausage, green pepper, onions and mushrooms and lots of cheese. They had an option of half baked, so I got that cause I wanted the pizza hot and crispy and we had a full kitchen back in my room, plus all the plates and stuff. We serve it and I gotta say this is some dang good deep dish pizza. I hate place where they say deep dish, but what it ends up being is deep crust pizza with thin toppings! When it came time to grab some food, we were able to get a table inside. Majority of the breweries tends to serve pretty much the same things, pizza sandwiches and salads. No complaints here. Simple food goes a long way. There were a couple of us so we grabbed a few things to share. Started off with the pretzel balls with cheese dip and honey mustard and the chips with queso cheese dip. Pretzel was tasty and outdid the queso dip. Pizzas of course which were pretty big in sizes. A couple of the pizzas and a salad did four of us with leftovers. Their Hawaiian pizza was quite tasty and was finished. We also ordered one of the mushroom pizzas with an egg. It was tasty but a little on the salty side. The arugula salad was delicious. Simple but tasty. And then there was ham pizza I believe with onions and peppercini. That was also a favorite of the night. Overall, the place was quite fun. Not a big brewery and more intimate. The crowd was great and as most places are very kid and family friendly. There was couple of kids when we arrived. Service was great. We got there probably 15min after we ordered and grabbed two cokes while we waited. I tried to pay with cash and was told he might not have change to give me. I said that was ok even though it's pretty lame that you don't keep change in your register. He happened to find a very large coin bag and made me change. We were sitting right at the front and you couldn't miss us. They asked us a few times what our name for the order was and we told them the same thing every time. Finally after about 10 min they asked us for the 3rd time what our name was and then walked away. We could hear someone say "the order for Kymmy didn't leave they are here" or something along those lines. We kind of just looked at each other. The guy that rang us up came over and said, "sorry something happened to your pizza it'll be another 20min or so". At this point we had already been waiting about 15 min for the pizza. So we said ok because we were starving. One of the employees asked us if we drank wine we said no we didn't and that's why we were drinking cokes. He said, "ohh, okayyyy..." and gave us a very judgmental look. Like sir, you don't know why we aren't drinking. We also kind of figured he wanted to give us a few beverage for the mix up. But that was the end of it. We heard someone say our name and we asked if ours was ready and one girl acted like we were being impatient while waiting. Like we didn't just wait over a half hour for food. Finally our pizza was done after a total of 40 min and there was very minimal apology for the delay. We took it back to our hotel and we were so excited it smelled so amazing and it looked so good. I cannot tell you how disappointed we were when we took our first few bites. It was not that great. We had ordered pepperoni and the veggie pizza. We ate half of it because we were starving and very quickly regretted it. It made both of us super sick on top of everything else Needless to say we won't be back here and won't be recommending this place either

This pizza was everything and I can see why it's so popular. Got takeout for a whole Pepperoni and…read moreWhite Pie. It was ready on time by the time we got there. Crust on both pizza was the perfect balance of crisp and thiness. Pepperoni - Not too oily or salty. Super generous with the pepperoni. They use smaller pepperoni which I always prefer. White Pie - I'm usually not a fan of pizza with no meat, but this was an exception. Incredibly delicious and I didn't feel like it was missing anything else.

Overall, it was solid--sauce had good flavor, cheese was decent, and the dough was nice. Nothing mind-blowing, but definitely a respectable slice. My only issue was the balance--there was a bit too much cheese for the crust, so even folding it New York-style, it didn't hold up well and kind of fell apart. A little more crisp on the bottom would've made a big difference. I also tried their Sicilian grandma-style focaccia pizza, and honestly, that was a huge letdown. It had this dusty, raw flour taste right away, was dry and spongy, and way overpowered with Parmesan. It just didn't come together at all--pretty disappointing, especially for the price. I've had frozen pizza that tasted better. Ended up just picking at the cheese to salvage something. On the plus side, the service was friendly and the space itself is chill--nice casual vibe with a few tables inside and outside to hang out. All in all, the regular slice was decent, but the focaccia pizza really missed the mark for me. Probably not a spot I'd go back to.
