The sourdough bread was soft, crunchy, and overall a delight. The concha was very interesting in flavor as it is different than other traditional conchas but I'd recommend. Service was fast and they have a system to get everyone in and out as efficiently as possible. We tried some lattes as well and they were delicious. I'd recommend the atole latte. The almond pastry I believe called doña was quite yummy as well but is rather $$ however keep in mind this is a larger pastry that honestly can feed 2. Tried 2 different loaves of their sourdough and they both were fantastic. Since they have their amazing bread would be great if they offered a menu of avocado toast, butter & jam, and maybe smoked salmon and cream cheese toast, things like that. Talk about great quality ingredients. Gusto Bread is a 2023 James Beard nominee as an Outstanding Bakery. This bake shop uses wild fermented sourdough culture for their breads. They also use in house made fresh corn masa. Aside from their artisanal breads, the pastries made here are very good. Quality ingredients make all the difference. Their conchas are made with sourdough and fluffy inside with that nice sugary crust. The nixtamal queen is their take on kouign amann but with a mix of sourdough bread and corn masa. I liked this pastry a lot. Very unique texture. Remind me of a sweet corn tamale. Gusto also roast their own coffee beans under the Cafe Cuate brand. When I'm in LBC, I make it a point to grab a bag of coffee beans. Single origin coffee beans sourced straight from the farm with specific flavor notes are big difference than your everyday Starbucks drips. Great to see this bake shop grow as they've doubled in size and remodeled not too long ago. Worth a visit if you're in LBC. We got the cinnamon concha, so soft n delicious . I was impressed! After hanging out in the front outside patio area, 2 hrs had passed and it was time to head out, the lines kept moving, but stayed busy. Guest new to the bakery had commented about how good they heard it was and I engaged and agreed ! I couldn't leave without buying some for home. I heard they use Ecuadorian chocolate to make there spelt chocolate chip sea salt cookies . I adore Gusto. They strive to be a community oriented spot and learn locals names. My favorites are the guava pastelito and the jamón and queso roll. The sesame flatbread is also a star and I love to bring it to picnics. Sometimes, there can be a long line, especially on weekends but nothing longer than a 30 min wait. No dogs allowed inside but there is a little patio to sit outside. There is only street parking which can be a challenge. read more

Their flavors are so interesting and different from many other bakeries around, fully embracing Latin American flavors and adding a little bit here and there. Our go-to favs: mole mushroom empanada, choco pan, bolillo de jalapeño and cheddar, guava pastelito, dona, nixtmal, concha de cacao, hueso quebrado, hueso, seeded loaf, and field loaf. Pretty much the entire menu. lol They had an amazing seasonal item called rosquita de Reyes that was delicious. We are vegetarian so haven't tried any of the items with meat. They also serve coffees and have ama amazing boutique that carries some specialty food items, home goods and branded merch. It's all very cute! Note that it gets super busy and there are two separate doors - one way in, one way out. The prices are fair, considering the ingredients taste clean. The coffee is great as well. I notice the place gets pretty busy on the weekends, but during the week there was no line. Located on 4th street in Long Beach, Gusto received some major national acclaim when it was a James Beard award finalist as an "outstanding bakery". This was a first for a Long Beach restaurant/business - it's a big deal. We've been here a few times for breads, baked goods, and coffee. My wife likes to come here when she craves lattes with assertive spice. For my current visit, I had their cornbread, which I paired with some soup at home and it was great. I had their california sourdough loaf and I was able to make some amazing sandwiches with it. We also really enjoyed their hand pie, which had generous amounts of fruit. Their walnut-based alfajores had rich dulce de leche and a nice crumble texture as you bite into it. Their breads and pastries are expertly done. Everything is good - but they'll add in their own unique touches by using South American chocolate, jams, nuts, or masas. You get the familiar taste that you crave and then, from the unique regional ingredients, you'll get an extra something on top of that. Their clever use of these ingredients is one factor that brings them national acclaim. This said, I have to say that if you have a nut allergy, then you should be careful. I think several of their cookies, empanadas, and breads integrate nuts into them. I posted the menu and they clearly designate these items. I'm appreciative of this transparency as I strategically disregarded the warning, got some mild symptoms, and learned from it. 100% my fault, but I'm just honestly saying to not do what I did. Read about Gusto from the NYTimes article, and it did not disappoint. Small line with about a 5 to 10 minute wait on a Saturday afternoon. Ordered the oyster mushroom molé empanada hot & flaky from the oven, the twice baked $9 sweet Orange filled Doña dessert bun, and a savory cheese bun. Everything from the store environment, presentation, to quality of goods was thoughtfully designed and executed. I will be back to try some of the delicious looking lattes. One word: wow. The pastelito de guayaba is single handedly the very best breakfast pastry I've ever had. I used to live in South America and had a guayaba tree and my favorite family breakfast was always pan with dulce de guayaba. This pastelito immediately took me back to those breakfasts in South America. The guava is perfect, the chunks of the fruit added great texture. The cheese was perfect to pair with the guava for the filling. And the crust/pastry part... oh my word.... Ridiculously flaky, out of this word delicious. It's like if a hand pie met a croissant. It's truly the best pastry I've ever had. 10/10 The Nixtamal Queen was also absolutely delicious. It's got a great chew, excellent mouth feel. There is a reason it is so popular. It is very unique, but so comforting. 8.5/10 The salted tamarind agua fresca was really good. Everything you would want from a tamarind agua fresca. 8/10 I came at noon on a Wednesday and there was a small line, just 4 parties ahead of me, but the line went very quickly. They have indoor and outdoor seating. And everyone was so nice! I highly recommend trying this bakery. There is a reason why they were a finalist for the James Beard Award for best CA bakery last year. And they're semi-finalists right now for the same James Beard award for this year. Overall love the atmosphere and the workers were so nice l! Theres alot of products from other latino owned businesses inside. The bread itself was really really good and the coffee too! I always pass by fourth Street and see this local gem constantly busy. Today I had my mom go over and get a loaf of some delicious sourdough bread. I carefully watch what I eat, and as they provide a quality of bread, which is fermented sourdough making it makes it easier to digest. Anyways, I had a slice with my breakfast and every bite was soft and the perfect balance of that sour taste not overpowering. However, as I am limiting my calories I would've liked for it to be thinly slice so when I come back, I will definitely ask if this can be done. Finally got a chance to check out Gusto today. Not surprisingly there was a line when I arrived about 11am but the 8 or 9 folks ahead of me were gone quickly. Seems that many folks order a few breads or pastries and a cup of coffee or two and tarry home. It's definitely a great neighborhood gig. I only had room for one loaf of bread in my backpack, so I chose the Dorado Loaf. I was told it was not the most 'sour doughy' as that would be the Field Loaf, but it was so pretty that I couldn't pass it up. The New York Times ranked Gusto Bread as one of the best bakeries in the US. After my visit, I can see why. While there are other bakeries that focus on naturally-leavened sourdough, Gusto goes above and beyond the typical sourdough loaf (which they do have - the California loaf $10, which is their most popular). They use sourdough in their Concha de Cacao ($). I don't normally like conchas because I find them dry but this one converted me. Even more unusual is their Nixtamal Queen ($7.50), their version of a kouign-amann, with a sourdough and corn masa dough. Wow. Loved that they even elevated their chocolate chip cookie ($4) by using spelt flour, giving it a whole new flavor dimension, and dark Ecuadorian chocolate. Their pastries are not too sweet either. Service was very warm and welcoming. The man helping me took so much care into wrapping each pastry and arranging it in the bag so they would not get damaged. I am torn between wishing I lived closer and being relieved that I don't because I'd be carb loading to my heart's content. Yes, you will probably find a line but it moves fast because they only let a couple of people in at a time. A new Long Beach gem. I love Long Beach! Specifically the 4th Street Corridor part of Long Beach. Whether it's cute little cafes, leftist bookstores, or artisanal bakeries like Gusto Bread, the 4th Street side of Long Beach reminds me of Old School San Francisco before the tech bros took over: all of the quirkiness and charm, none of the smugness and late stage capitalism douchebaggery. I first heard of Gusto Bread when I saw that it was nominated for a James Beard finalist for Outstanding Bakery. A new school panadería with reasonable prices, what's not to love? Similar to Porto's, which is known of its fairly priced baked goods, the affordable nature of many of Gusto's options compels me to spend at least $50-60 each time I'm here. I've had over half the menu at this point and the standouts to me for pastries are the Doña ($9.50), the Spelt Cookie ($4), the Mole Empanada ($5), the Buttermilk Biscuit ($3.75), and of course, the Nixtamal Queen ($7.50). As you can imagine with a James Beard finalist, everything is going to be at least above average quality and that is certainly true with Gusto Bread. Besides, the standards (don't sleep on their quickbread Buttermilk Biscuit), I'll highlight a few things that don't appear at every bakery... The Doña is like concha meets an almond roll, balancing airiness with the rich nuttiness of almond cream and toasted almond slivers. The Mole Empanada is a savory mole negro mushroom-filled flaky turnover. The standout of standouts, to me was the Nixtamal Queen: a semi-dense sticky bun, whose not quick dinner roll, not quite cornbread consistency really encapsulates the magical cultural blending you experience overall at this new Long Beach institution. No new school bakery is complete with some buzzy coffee drinks and the ones to get here are the Horchata Cold Brew ($6.50) or the Atole Latte ($7.25), both as flavorful as you'd think but not as sickeningly sweet as you'd find at most places. Finish out your order with a whole or pre-sliced California or Field loaf ($10/$10.50) and you'd be forgiven if you mistook your whereabouts for the Richmond District of San Francisco instead of 4th Street Long Beach... but trust me, I'd rather be in Long Beach over San Francisco ANY day and twice over on Sundays. SoCal runs the state, LB and LA over the Bay forever and God's people say AMEN! Parking is fairly easy to find on the street and into the neighborhood... just be prepared to wait in line if you want to get there early before they sell out of items. Keep an eye out for specialty items too, like grandma-style square pizza slices they do for special occasions like Father's Day et al. read more

My friend told me about this place since she bought a sourdough starter here so that's what brought me in. I loooved the pastries and coffee drinks they had on their menu. This place is the dopest panaderia in LB. I've been a sourdough enthusiast since the day I stepped into their gusto house (cute little cottage house) pre-brick & mortar.
