We were seated right away in the way way back of the restaurant. The layout and decor of the place gives it a classic, borderline kitschy vibe. You can tell it's a place that's managed to hold its own for like 60 years (!!!). The server was friendly, overall service was prompt, and the portions were solid. I got the quiche of the day, which was ham and cheese, and it was amazing. It came with a side (salad was fresh and crisp) and a muffin -- their raspberry streusel muffin was so delicious and a perfect dessert to tie the meal together. I would definitely get this special again, and look forward to trying their other versions of both quiches and muffins. Others at my table got strawberry pancakes, a pastrami sandwich, and chicken fried steak. All food was devoured, so I take it that it was good. I love it when a place is sentimental from my childhood and still really is amazing. Throughout my childhood, teen years, and adulthood, Bake n Broil has been an easy go to breakfast/lunch place. We just finished our taxes down the street and decided to drop by for lunch. For 3 people we paid less than $60 (pre-tip) and experienced quality food, service, and value. All the staff was friendly and attentive. Food was delicious and actually met the expectations of my memories. We did wait a little bit for a table, but the vibe was neighborly and it was obvious a lot of regulars were in today. I had the 1/2 sandwich special, I chose roast beef on squaw, French onion soup and a slice of lemon lush pie. My husband had the pastrami sandwich and our friend had the Russian omelet. This is my absolute favorite place to go get breakfast! Everyone working there is super nice and the Customer Service is on point! My coffee is always filled to the brim. I love all of the salsa and jams they offer as well. And I can't even begin to tell you about the bakery! They have fresh baked muffins every day so good! It can get quite busy there so get there early to put your name on the list. They also have outside seating as well. This is an iconic place for anyone who grew up in the LBC. I have been here a few times and every visit, the service and food is amazing. Because it is so popular, it can get busy and since it is a bit small, you may need to wait, but it is well worth the wait. A few of my favorite dishes include the country fried steak, french toast, chicken pot pie, and the homemade pies. There is such a great variety of food that I am sure you will have no problem finding something to your liking. As you sit in the cafe, you can get some free smells of all their homemade pies. My favorite is the peach pie, it is fruity, fresh, flavorful, and pairs well with a scoop of ice cream. If needed, you can always take a pie home if you are too full from your entree. The staff here are so nice and often times, you will find the owners helping out during busy peak days. They are attentive and quick to serve. If you don't believe it, just drive by and watch the number of people waiting outside--and inside--for a table. They don't take reservations, which is a bit of a bummer, but honestly, it's usually worth the wait. I've always ordered breakfast, and everything I've had over the years has been consistently good. My go-to orders are the diced ham & eggs, banana nut pancakes, and the ABC omelette. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. They used to be open until 8pm, so I was surprised on a recent Sunday visit to learn they now close at 2pm for dine-in. They do remain open for takeout only until around 7pm or 8pm. Parking can be a little challenging. There's limited street parking, plus a lot behind the restaurant. Back in the day, you could park in the church lot across the street, but I'm not sure if that's still allowed. Oh and can't forget about the baked goods. Service was quick (which is a good thing) - that being said, it was a very "in-and-out" type of experience where all the staff seem so frantic to move you along. They also gave all the condiments (including a fresh pico de gallo) without needing to ask for it. Drinks are continuously refilled and we were attended to frequently. We did feel rushed, as they would stop by the table every few minutes to do a minor table touch (ie: asking if we needed anything, taking away a plate here and there, asking for refills here and there). As far as pricing goes, the portions are big. I always have a 2nd meal with every dish I've ordered. I am a fan of leftovers! The ingredients & quality is consistent and fresh. This place gets really busy. Most visits, there is a wait around 30 mins. Staff is always working hard and they do squeeze in as many tables/booths as possible, but it gets loud and people are standing around both inside and out. Due to this, we more often than not order take-out. The restaurant doesn't seat on the front patio, so on a nice day, you'll often find some who ordered take-out enjoying their meal out front. It comes with red onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and a delicious Horseradish spread. The roast beef was tender and perfectly done, pretty and pink. The last five or so times that I've been here, I always have the applesauce which is delicious and I've never had any like it, spicy and not too sweet. My friend had the half sandwich, soup or salad and pie special. She had a tuna salad sandwich on squaw bread, she said it was delicious. We both had iced tea to drink. She had the lemon lush pie for dessert. I was told about something called a cheese pocket. They had four left and I bought them all. Two for my stepson, one for my friend and one for me. Jongewaard is a little restaurant on the corner of Atlantic and 37th street. There is only street parking and on the weekends it can get pretty busy. I wish I got my servers name because she was extremely nice and provided amazing service. She recommended a dish from their special menu called the "Cheese Pocket" and it was so good. It was like a cheese danish turned into a pancake with fresh fruit on top and a side of their house made strawberry syrup. The combo came with two eggs and your choice of bacon or sausage.
