Nonna Mercato holds a special place in our hearts. They are like members of the family at this point because we are there every week reliably. At least a few times. Nonna has become our go to bakery, our sweet retreat, and one of our favorite local brunch spots. Now, they even have happy hour and, during the summer, dinner (Nonna Summer Nights)! And all of the food is amazing. Seriously, truly legit! We buy bread from there each week. No more "big box store" bread you freeze. They make their bread fresh daily. They only use fresh, locally sourced ingredients with no preservatives. It's nice to look at an ingredient list and not see a paragraph for bread (and be able to pronounce all the names!). And their cupcakes and sweets. Yo, seriously so good. And the thing is, because of the ingredients they use, we don't feel heavy or overly wired after eating cake or cupcakes from them. From other places you can tell they use preservatives, refined sugars, processed ingredients. But with Nonna, you can just taste the difference. We even had them make our special cake for our wedding! We recently tried their dinner (twice!) and it exceeded expectations. Now, mind you, all of their food has always been good but our experience was amazing. Their prix fixe menu was well put together, wine pairings on point, dessert was also delicious. Our favorite was the tiramisu! Also loved the spaghattini and casarecce pastas, and entrecôte di manzo, but everything was great. Their brunch is also great, you really can't go wrong on the menu. And I think we've gone through almost all of it! Finally, (if you've stayed with me this long!) the absolute best thing about Nonna for us is the TEAM. Hands down no question. The food is good, space is a comfortable neighborhood vibe, and all that. But truly the folks here are amazing humans. Always friendly, warm, and welcoming. Nonna Mercato has been on my list for ages, so when I found out my friend took a job there as a pastry baker recently, I knew I had to take the opportunity to go support! Located in the quaint Bixby Knolls neighborhood of Long Beach, street parking was plentiful right outside the restaurant. We came around noon on Saturday, and thankfully despite their busy brunch rush we were seated immediately. Even though all of their seating is outdoors, tables are shaded by overhanging canopy and just added to the cute southern Italian bistro vibes of the place. The menu had a solid selection of both brunch and lunch items - I loved the Burrata di Campagna, which was flavorful with just the right amount of tart from the heirloom tomatoes. For my main meal I had to go with the Casarecce - one of their pastas that's made fresh in house daily. The braided pasta was wonderfully textured and soaked up all the pesto sauce without being overly oily, a perfect meal for a hot summer day. We finished our meal with a Nutella Croissant, from their artisan bakery that also makes their bread fresh every day. Perhaps I am a little biased, but the laminated dough was perfectly light and flaky, encasing a very generous filling of hazelnut chocolate cream. Our check at the end of the meal even came with a custom drawn postcard by one of the Nonna Mercato service staff - another present to add on to what was already a gift of a meal! read more

I rarely leave reviews, but this experience deserves one. I canceled my Summer Nights reservation the morning of because my son was in an accident. I spoke with a woman who took my name and confirmed the cancellation. The next day, I was hit with a $100 charge. It's shocking to see a restaurant that claims to be part of the community show absolutely no compassion when a family is dealing with an emergency. Charging someone after acknowledging a cancellation under those circumstances is unacceptable. This place clearly lacks the heart and humanity that a neighborhood business should have. I spoke with the restaurant manager Patrick after calling multiple times to speak with someone and he basically said he is not willing to refund the charge because they order food ahead of time. Absolutely delicious! The first time we came to this restaurant, the line was down the street so we tried another place instead. This time was mid-week so we didn't have trouble getting in for lunch. We sat on the lovely patio and it was a beautiful day. Service was quick, helpful and friendly. The menu was great and our food was delicious. We ordered a few pastries and a Matcha inside before we were seated on the patio for lunch. My Caesar salad was good but my pasta was so great. I had the Casarecce and it tasted so fresh and light. Asparagus, pine nuts and lemon was the perfect combination. I was told they make their pasta from scratch daily with organic dough and without the use of machines. It did not disappoint. (After visiting Italy last year and tasting the difference between American pasta and Italian pasta, this place hit the spot.) This was me and my friends 2nd time to the Summer Nights and last year we really really enjoyed it. Everything was delicious and we couldn't wait to go back. This time (yesterday), however, was not nearly the same experience. First of all, I realized we couldn't book a table for 8 people, so me and my friends book 2 tables for 8.30PM. I called asking if it's possible to put our tables together close or side by side, they said they will try their best. We all showed up at 8.30 and waited until around 9-9.15 because they only had 1 table ready. Ok. Come the time the other table opened and it's not even that close to each other. But it's okay, I respect the limitations on this part. No one came to us to take our order or even give us water until way later, and we got our drinks at 9.45. Another critique is that my friend called and ask how much corkage fee and they said $25. It turned out to be $40. Another disappointment, but it's ok. Not much can be done bout that part. Next thing is the food. We enjoyed the fried green beans. Crudo was really really salty, and it's not only 1 person thought that. We wondered if the kitchen mistakenly salted the fish twice. We enjoyed the peach salad. We ordered a few different pasta and the tagliatelle in particular was disappointing. It really lacked flavor that we had to mix the other pasta dish sauce to it. The pork plate was good, a bit small but we enjoyed it. Now the mussles and frites were disappointing too. The sauce just didn't do it for me (other friends agreed). I always talked really highly about Nonna Mercato (I also enjoyed the brunch so much) and always told people that this is one of my most favorite restaurants in Long Beach, but this one really missed the mark for me and my friends. I don't know if this would make us want to go to Summer Nights again next time. For $130 per person (after tax, tip, and corkage fees), I definitely hoped for a much better experience. read more

I've been here for brunch with my friends a while back but have been getting their bakeries from the farmers market few times, and also because of them, I came to know about Stereoscope coffee! First off, they are a super popular spot for brunch, especially on a weekend, so highly suggest you come with a reservation ahead of time. We ordered a few pasta dishes and they were all very good, but, they are a bit over the top oily for me. Even their salad, which I forgot the name now but it was the one with a variety of greens, it was delish but after few bites, the olive oil caught up to me because it was drench in oil. So overall, food wise, good but kind of really heavy because of how much oil they use. Their coffee, matcha, and bread/bakery are very good otherwise. If you just come for coffee or matcha, and buy some beans home, or the chocolate they have inside, you will be happy! Ugh I'm so sad to have to write this about Nonnas Summer Nights especially since I really liked the Winter Nights. I came during the second weekend and it clearly had a lot of loose ends that needed work. We arrived at 8:55 for out 9pm resy and were seated at 9:30. That is crazy to me - the least they can do is send out a message saying the previous seating was running late. 3/5 Food - way too salty and pasta was undercooked. The star of the show was the eggplant dish - everything else I would not recommend. I remember during winter nights that I thought the pasta wasn't very good. This is still the case. This time, I got the spagghettini lobster and it was super salty and the pasta was on the uncooked side of al dente. I took a few bites and took the rest to go home. The frites with the mussels must have been left out for a little bit because they were cool and limp. The crudo was awful- the pistachios and the capers were extraordinarily salty. We asked our server if we were able to request the pasta to be cooked more in the future - she explained the pasta got a 3-4 minute rolling boil. This is most definitely not enough for the pasta - and I go to Italy every year and I know what Al dente is. Highly recommend to tell them ahead of time for a slightly more tender pasta if you don't want their uncooked hard pasta version of Al dente. None of the desserts were special offerings like the panna cotta or unique cakes that are not typical offerings from the bakery. We didn't partake this time. I've gotten the tiramisu for the to go pantry on Friday's before. Overall- this summer nights was a miss. I would stick to non pasta dishes during the day time (like the shakshuka for brunch) and their bakery goods. I will try to come back for Winter Nights to see if it stands to my memory of last year's meal! read more

To say we are a "regular" is an understatement. We first discovered Nonna many moons ago. We were attracted to their pastries especially their Everything Croissants (it's heavenly). It had become on of our favorite breakfast spots but they also serve lunch and dinner! Food: Their pastries are beyond delicious with lots of sweet and savory options. Fresh baked breads. On occasions they would have baked at home items in their fridge. I always grab way too many things but they're all worth it. Came here for brunch on a Sunday afternoon and there was a bit of a wait, but I heard that is expected here as it is only outdoor seating. This is my first time here and while we were waiting we went inside in the bakery. Such a cute ambiance as there have different food items, wine, olive oils, baked bread, and their famous pastries in there! The line gets long and some of the pastries get sold out right away until they make a new batch. I got the pistachio cream, the ham y formaggio, and the classic kouign amann and the chocolate cake. I also ordered the seasonal drink - lavender matcha. After ordering from the bakery, my party was seated. To start we ordered focaccia, burrata di campagna, and the classic country bread. The focaccia was nice and fluffy. Easy to pull apart and it pairs well with the burrata and tomatoes. The country bread was delicious with the cultured butter and jam (which I think are made here). I ordered the salmon lox - everything bagel topped with a dill cream cheese, smoked salmon, shallots, capers, and topped with basil. It was very rich and filling. The smoked salmon was perfect for me, not too smoky. My boyfriend doesn't like smoky so he didn't like the salmon, but enjoyed the cream cheese. That was my favorite part also! My boyfriend ordered Nonna's breakfast - eggs, bacon, toasted baguette, market lettuces, and seasonal name - with a side of fennel sausage. This meal looked really good. The sunny side up eggs looked nice and runny. I tried the fennel sausage which was really good. The fennel was different. It had nice texture and brought a lot of flavor to the sausage. My boyfriend's brother got the tagliatelle - Nonna ginelli's bolognese, pecorino, and basil. I didn't get to try it but it looked really good. The sauce looked perfect with the bread. He also ordered Spanish latter which wasn't too strong. And my lavender matcha was a nice refresher throughout my meal. It wasn't too florally and perfect enough where you can still taste the matcha. This place was no reservations so we had to wait 30 minutes because it just has patio seating. We waited because it looked really delicious. We all got different milks for our matcha latte and it was delicious. I got the steak and fries but subbed for a salad and I felt like it made the meal perfect. The meat was cooked exactly how I like and it was very easy to eat and spiced perfectly. The focaccia was also very good but would be nice if it came with four instead of three per order. My first visit to Nonna Mercato was nice. We went on a weekday and sat on the patio. The patio is in front of a big street but surprisingly it's not loud. There's a covered patio and the aesthetic is pretty and kinda minimalist. Inside the restaurant is the bakery & cafe and merch to purchase. The kitchen is visible from the cafe which I think is pretty neat. The menu was on a one page mat and I went with the Tagliatelle Bolognese and my friend went with the Smoked Salmon Bagel. I also ordered the Spanish latte. I asked if the Spanish latte was sweet and was told it was because sweetened condensed milk so I asked to make it less and I wish I hadn't, it was bland. The entrees were salty for both of us but it wasn't terrible. We did see some other dishes that were brought out to other tables and would like to return to try something else for sure. Tried out Nonna Mercato for brunch. It was a lovely experience I ordered the Iced Pecan latte and the croque seniora. My friend and I also split a pecan matcha croissant for dessert. The coffee was good but I couldn't really taste the pecan. Aside from that it was still pretty tasty and I enjoyed it with my food. The croissant was also delicious. You can really taste the matcha and pecan. It was also very fluffy and big size. I would say however if you're not big on sweets try a different pastry as this one is a little more on the sweet end which I personally enjoyed. They all looked delicious though so no worries about that. Now the main star was the croque seniora. It was a croissant with ham and egg on top that came with a side salad. The side salad was delicious. The added just enough cheese to go with the salad. The sandwich was also great the eggs were runny and the croissants mixed well with all the ingredients. I would recommend trying out their food as they do well in both sweet and savory dishes. The workers were also on top of it. They were checking on us and making sure we were doing well. Wasted a $100 gift certificate on their Summer Nights Fixe menu. Spaghettini with tough pieces of lobster were the highlight. After being up charged $15 for the rib eye, I was served something that looked like a joke. I literally looked around as if I were on candid camera. The piece of meat was the size of a fifty cent piece. The garnish was bigger. Unfortunately I took a friend that's never been there. I hyped it up because I have been there for breakfast and enjoyed it. I kept looking at her with embarrassment. The worse part of it all was it was so hot outside, they had sunscreens up that also blocked the breeze. No fans anywhere in sight. My chest and back were dripping sweat. I was so disappointed. I came for the Nonne Mercato Summer Nights menu, which I think is delicious and worth the price. The reservations are hard to get in advance, but you can always camp on the day-of to pick up last minute cancellations.  The dishes here are simple, traditional, and expertly executed. What Nonna does really well is refined basics, which is what you can hope and dream of for Italian food. I think this is a really special place to enjoy day or night. read more

Perfect lunch spot to chit chat with friends! The food is delicious but what sets Nonna Mercato apart from the rest is the atmosphere. Such a relaxing vibe to sit out on the patio underneath all the greenery with beautiful pastries and lattes at your table. We didn't realized the kitchen closed a couple hours before 6pm so we arrived with only 2 mins before the kitchen closed. They still sat us and were so polite and friendly! My friend recommended a Thursday lunch here to catch up! It was packed on a random weekday lunch which she said was normal. We shared the pistachio/ricotta/honey brioche and I had the tagliatelle bolognese. Some of the best pasta I've ever had, both texture of the pasta and the flavor of the sauce was heavenly. I think the brioche was not my favorite, it was very sweet and I wish the ricotta had a bit more salt to balance it out. Also got the peach lemonade which was lovely. Stopped by the bakery afterwards and picked out a baguette. Not the most amazing baguette I've had but it was pretty good. The pasta was by far the star of the show. They were also very accommodating to my friend who had brought her 4 month old! They only asked that we stow the stroller but gave us a table where the baby could have her own seat and made us very welcome. Amazing! I'd found this place on instagram (my algorithm knows I love pasta) so it had been on my list to try. I wasn't expecting it to be nestled in a very unassuming area- close to Chipotle and across the street from a church. There was a small parking lot in the back and parking on the street in the front. Arriving, I saw people waiting to be seated so I knew it would be good. The wait wasn't too long.. 30 minutes. Matthew provided impeccable service and answered or questions with an expert level of knowledge. We tried the rigatoni and the carbonara paired with the country loaf and their seasonal lemonade. So freaking GOOD. Bread and pastas are made in house. The jam with the bread!? OMG! Portions were perfect, and the food was bursting with flavor. Everything was so fresh. One of the best Long Beach has to offer is definitely Nonna Mercado. This place is relaxing yet exciting at the same time. I get excited here for their lattes and their brioche. They make their own bread and all other ingredients. You can tell in the flavor and execution of the dishes. It's one of the best brunch spots in town. We arrive at 8am when they opened and it was the best brunch. Service was just outstanding. They have outside patio as well so it was very nice. Some notes: very limited parking lot.
