One of our go-to Vietnamese places since we moved to Sunset Park. The food is very well-priced and they have a variety of meal options. I've primarily had meat and veggie plates and they are very good. In addition, the Summer rolls and Spring rolls are much tastier and cheaper than the majority of Viet restaurants around Brooklyn. This is definitely worth a try. As mentioned before, customer service isn't their strong point but I definitely feel they have improved over the last few months (and it's never been an issue for my boyfriend or I). Gia Lam have two locations on 8ave and another one in Canal St Chinatown. The prices have risen up a quarter or two due to the economy but the food is pretty good. I always take takeout at least once a week from the 48th st Gia Lam. Service is good, I always get the traditional Pho (they give you all the extra stuff in plastic bags when you do takeout: need in plastic bags (bean sprouts, housin/hot sauce in a small sauce container and lemon/herbs for the noodle dishes) while my brother gets the Chicken Chops with noodle. The beef cube dish with fried rice is really good. I use the sauce for the beef cube over my fried rice and it one of the favorite combos they have on the menu. Vietnamese spring rolls are also good, I just eat it without the lettuce and using the entire fish sauce they give you to dip the spring rolls into. read more

Pretty decent pho made by Canto-Viet folks in the middle of Brooklyn's Chinatown. Surprisingly, the thit nuong (?) - grilled chicken - was great, and the cha gio use the correct rice paper instead of the version that makes it more like a Chinese egg roll. Food is awful! I ordered 3 of the grilled pork chops with vermicelli noodles and spring rolls for me and my family. The vermicelli noodles were hard, the grilled pork chops was bland and the spring was hella greasy. The outer shell for the spring roll tasted like plastic I kid you not. The prices were fairly cheap but I wouldn't mind paying more for better food. They should be paying me for eating that, it was disgusting. I have been here twice so far and really, this place is mindblowingly good in an authentic, no frills, "we serve what we eat" kind of place. The first time, I wasn't even hungry but Mio insisted that these spring rolls were not like anything I had ever tasted. True to form, he was right. The crispy wonton skins filled with succulent pork, fried to a golden brown were served with lettuce and a fish sauce for dipping. After adding siracha to the sauce I followed suit, and added parsley to my roll, wrapped it in lettuce, dipped and ate. The cool lettuce contrasted with the hot crunchy wonton, and the sauce complemented it perfectly. The salty, sweet springs rolls are nothing short of divine. We followed with simple pho: a rich broth, rice noodles, tripe, pork, beef and tendon. I had never eaten tripe or tendon, but both were surprisingly pleasant. The tendon was especially good, as it was gelatinous and flavorful. After adding copious amounts of bean sprouts, lemon, siracha and oyster sauce, a balance of decadence and simplicity made for a new addiction. Today I tried the sweet and sour fish soup, and we added a honey glazed pork chop to the crack rolls as an appetizer. The rolls were as good as I remembered and the pork chop was pounded thin, with a lovely caramelization, cooked on the bone, making it all the more juicy. The fish soup was unlike any I have had in the usual Chinese restaurants I order it in. This version was light, with a very sour broth, filled with fresh salmon, bean sprouts and sweet chunks of canned pineapple. Truly inventive and simply delicious. It is worth the trek, and if you are in the area, you are LUCKY. read more

Cheap food that tastes great! I usually get the pork with rice...the fish sauce you dip it in tastes really good. The spring rolls are also good..you wrap them in lettuce and dip it in fish sauce! The summer rolls were alright....my friend got the beef cubes with rice which was delish. My sis gets the pho from here, and it's flavorful. I had been here 2 days in a row for lunch and each of the experience was great. Mostly great. Food was excellent. Day 1. I got a pho number 12 on menu. The soup base tasted a bit light but it doesn't reek of that msg taste that other Viet places have. A lot of rice noodles but very little of meat. I literally had 2 slices of beef. Big bowl though so no complaint. The waiter got on my nerves a bit. As a previous yelper mentioned the spiked hair dude took our order and ask rudely what do you want in Chinese. Now my bf is not a fluent Chinese speaker so he had an accent as almost all abcs Do but the guy just gave him a look. The girl at the front had a better and friendlier attitude. Day 2. I went to get take out and had ordered by phone first. The guy picked up the phone and took my order. No problem. When I got there I was greeted by the girl at the front who frantically looked for My bill that the spiked hair guy misplaced. While waiting for my order the spiked hair dude picked up cash from one table. The lady asked him to ask if they want change. From what I saw change was 9 something. Now the guy didn't even bother to ask them since it was a group of 4 non Asians. He just screamed across the restaurant saying "no need " in a don't care tone. even though I wasn't that tables customers I still felt that was unethical. Tips are considered a privilege and not for you to decide except the customers. Back to my order. I got a pork chop over rice. Meat portion is crazy. Good crazy. It was 2 large pieces of meat that filled up the box. Most Viet places give you less that that and still charge you more. It was 6.25 total btw. Would I come back? Sure why not. I've eaten here so often it's not even funny. I happen to live in Brooklyn Chinatown. The only reason I ate at this place is because a man's gotta get his Com Suon Nuong (grilled pork chops) somewhere. It's a pretty standard Chinese Vietnamese restaurant in that the food is not particularly authentic. It's basically a greasier version of Vietnamese food. They also tend to be short on the lemongrass and other condiments that normally go with Vietnamese food. It's not bad for the price but if you're looking for a kickass Vietnamese experience you might try somewhere else. read more

Love this place. I don't know if its because we are there all the time or they understand that people usually pay money for food they want to eat. I love the pho - keep it simple and bring on the meat raw on the side. I typically need more broth towards the end and the waitress actually pours it into my bowl so I don't burn myself. There has never been an extra charge on the bill. My boys, who aren't Vietnamese food fans, always find a delicious something to eat. If they could do one thing to gain 5 starts, it would be to serve more of their pickled radishes and daikon. The criticism is that the food is "chinesified." That's totally OK and most of us know that us what we are getting when we come here. That doesn't mean we can't actually enjoy it. As I have written in past reviews, you can't go wrong with pho! Gia Lam in Brooklyn Chinatown (8th Ave) is a delight. The spring rolls were crispy and stuffed to the gills - definitely not a skimpy weakling like I had at other places. The pho was extremely tasty - especially the broth (my favorite part). Far from bland - it does not need sauce unless you like your pho spicy. Service is quick but not rushed (I went when it was less packed during the week). I usually come here if I can't find parking near the 54th steet Gia Lam. This place is the same but just further down 8th ave and smaller. You can always find parking near this Gia Lam because its not as packed. I think it tastes exactly the same. I recommend the Pho and spring rolls. Sometimes the beef cubes w/ fried rice is good too. I always get the lemon grass tofu here. Be sure to order it mild however or otherwise your face will be blown off. The summer roll seemed heavy on the noodle and a bit bland, even with the peanut sauce. More vegetable would be preferable inside. Be sure to order the AVOCADO MILKSHAKE. Almost every time I come to Brooklyn, I would eat here for lunch. The pho is exceptionally good, same with the rice dishes. The only thing I would like to point out is that the Pho used to have a lot more beef and noodles in it, but with rising costs, Gia Lam decided to cut back to keep the prices low. Same goes with the rice dishes (less of everything). Overall, it's a nice little place to grab some cheap but delicious lunch. read more
