I LOVE this Viet restaurant! It is MAD cheap and the Pho is fantastic! I've been coming here for about 5 years now, and it's a favorite. They have an awesome beef roll appetizer that's chock full of delicious, marinated beef. It's what gives me the craving to keep going back. That and the cheap prices! Pho is like $5-6 here! My New York family (co-workers) and I go here for our Vietnamese fix. This is a staple in our Sunset Park list of restaurants. Service is quick and no hassle. You can't beat the cheap prices. Stuff your stomach till it pops for under $10. I have no doubt you'll dream of the fatty, tender, barbecue pork after your first encounter with it. My favorite from Gia Lam is their Gia Lam Special: barbecue pork, Chinese sausage, fried egg over rice, with fish sauce on the side. Chinese and Vietnamese folks will tease that two out of the three elements in the special are so cheap you can make it yourself at home. Yet it tastes so much better put together by Gia Lam. I also adore their beef noodle soup, aka PHO. The best is the one with everything in it: the tripe, the brisket, the tendon, and the raw rib eye. At other Viet restaurants you can choose from small, medium, large, and extra large bowls of noodles and broth. Here, it's only one size, but it's enough to satisfy your belly. I like the soup because it's not filled with MSG. You can really taste the slow cooking of the meat in the liquids. Hours after slurping rice noodles and beef broth, you will not be gasping for gallons of water. My mom was a frequent visitor to this restaurant before I was born, so this establishment has been around for a while. There used to be 3 Gia Lams on 8 ave, now they only have two and the other one is on 45th street, 8ave. The food served here is pretty standard Vietnamese food. They have spring rolls and summer rolls, pho, and rice dishes. I found out recently that they offer french coffee, but I never got to try it. It looked pretty cute though, with the little cup and all. I used to frequent this place more when the food was great now it's gone down hill a bit. I practically tired everything on the menu and honestly somethings have gone from good to meh. I haven't tried their Bahn Mi's [vietnamese sandwiches] in a while but the table next to ours ordered it and it didn't look too great. They use the same grilled meat they use for pho to fill the sandwiches. Good Bahn Mi stores will use special kinds of meats to make the sandwich right. So their sandwiches here are a big no-no for me. I also wouldn't recommend the curry from this place, as it is very watery and not very flavored. The portions are still generous and they prices are still very low [~$5 bowl of noodles]. They are rather quick with their food, expect it here within 15 minutes and expect to get out in an hour. They seem to have tried to add new things to the menu. Chicken wings, french fries and onion rings were not a thing here a few years ago. I guess they are trying to cater to the younger diners as well. This visit I played it safe and ordered Grilled Pork Pho and my partner ordered the Beef Flank Pho. We also had a beef summer roll to share. My pork pho was great, just how they used to serve it to me. The noodles were a tad over cooked, and the soup was a bit thin, but I happily slurped it up. The other pho wasn't as great. The beef chunks tasted like overcooked, tasteless, hunks of cardboard. My partner did not finish his food and had to leave hungry. I've been wanting to try Gia Lam since I read a rave review on Serious Eats. I have to say, I was disappointed. The spring rolls were served piping hot, which i appreciate, but they were so greasy they were glistening and slick all over. The filling was basically solid ground pork. This is a matter of personal preference, but I'd rather have a mix of meat and veggies in my spring rolls. The wrappers were so tough they were difficult to swallow. Not appetizing. The summer roll was kind of mushy and tasteless, except for a weird porky aftertaste in a product that contained no visible pork products. The pho tai was okay. The broth had a pleasant vinegary tang, but not a lot of flavor otherwise. The service was good, and the staff were very friendly and upbeat. read more

This is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in my neighborhood. They offer good prices with decent portions. The place is relatively clean - except when they run out of dishes. The dishes/cups would come out smelling like chlorine. The staff is friendly; but when it gets busy, they tend to ignore. I usually order their pork chop with rice or the spring rolls/pork chop on rice sticks depending what I'm craving that night. The pork chops are done just right and there's flavoring. The waitress would ask if you would like the pork chop cut. I usually tell them yes, to save myself the hassle of cutting it myself. They give a lot of rice, but I usually don't eat much of it anyways. The spring rolls/pork chop on rice sticks are good. It comes as a dry dish, but with a side of their special sauce that you pour over it. Sometimes the spring rolls will be over fried and taste nasty and dry. Soup tastes a bit sweeter than other places, which doesn't bother me as much, but the noodles.. I was disappointed. They are thicker than most I've been to, and I know that it's better to dine in when you eat that but come on.. the noodles were still hard 5 minutes into being soaked in their broth. Then I had the beef cube fried rice.. my beef wasn't cooked, and I know beef doesn't HAVE to be cooked fully, but come on, this is in my rice and not a steak dish.. Their spring rolls ? UNcooked. The skin wasn't fried enough, disgusting. Last and worst, their sandwiches. Seriously, I ordered the grill pork, its legit just grilled pork and lettuce ? Where is your typical carrots and cucumber ? I am never coming to this one again, even though it's SO close to me. I would much rather walk further and get something more decent. I must say, the pho noodle soup is pretty decent. It is very flavorful but what makes this place a no-no for me was the microwave pork chop and finding a hair in the spring rolls. I been to this place twice and I was disappointed both time. The first time, I ordered my usual pork chop noodle soup. You can tell the pork chop was made a while ago and was reheated because my food came 5 mins after I placed my order. Some part of the pork was burnt so it did not hit the spot for me. The second time I was there, I ordered the same thing and I was disappointed again. The pork chop was very thin, burnt and definitely microwave. Beside the pork chop issue, my boyfriend found a hair in the spring rolls. A long strand of hair mixed into the meat.
