This used to be a good place with good service and tasty food. Unfortunately, the last two visits were disappointing. First, the positives: The staff greets guests politely. The restaurant is clean -- the tables and floors look well maintained. Portion sizes are good. Now the negatives: After our food was served, the waiter put his phone on the counter with his back to us, started a video call, and began talking very loudly. He was laughing and speaking Spanish. A manager (I assume) came out and joined the conversation, and then a third person, who looked like a cook wearing an apron, joined as well. While we were eating, they were walking freely around the front area of the restaurant, laughing loudly, chatting with the person on the video call, patting each other on the back, squatting, and clearly enjoying themselves. It felt like we were not in a restaurant, but at a Mexican party or maybe at a train station. They completely occupied the space, while we were eating quietly so as not to disturb them. This was not a one-time experience. Either the staff talks loudly to each other, shouts, and behaves overly casual, or they stand at the counter with their backs to the guests, scrolling on their phones and not paying attention to anything else. Most likely, we will not be coming back. It's a shame, because we really liked this place before -- the food was good and we used to visit often. read more

I came back for the vermicelli salad and it did not disappoint. The grilled pork was very flavorful. This time I tried the calamari $20 and it was fire. Nice and crispy and it came with stir fried onions and peppers along with pickled daikon and carrots. It also had a sweet and sour sauce. The pho was okay, the broth just doesn't have depth to it. This place had good reviews so I took a friend of mine for her first experience with Vietnamese food. Definitely not an authentic viet place. I ordered summer rolls, and a vegetable pho. The spring rolls were not served with peanut sauce, instead it was served with a fish based sauce typically used for spring rolls. The pho also just tasted like vegetable broth, instead of the discernible spices and rich taste that pho is known for. read more

Their portions are petty generous for their prices which is the only reason I'm more inclined to order from them not versus other spots. My go to, chicken over rice, is pretty good here too. I'm back again. This is how it went down. It was raining outside started with a hot tea ordered to grill chicken pho. Got the cook for cutting up. The chicken was very convenient to pick.. so you start by taking the basil putting it inside the soup a whole handful of bean sprouts some Sriracha and some hoisin sauce on the side of the chicken that served with Romaine lettuce. You take a piece of chicken w a piece of Romain lettuce then dip in sauce ,you then take some noodles and chase it with the broth!I'm telling you, you're gonna thank me. repeat and repeat and make sure you use napkins your nose will be running . Spacious and semi modern decor is what sets this restaurant apart from all the other ones in this area. I like that the tables are spread farther apart than other places. The large front windows are floor to ceiling. Picturesque. Maybe they'll open them in nice weather. Service is very friendly and accommodating. I've tried many dishes across the menu. Everything is ok, thought nothing really stands out. Nice large portions. Couldn't really finish any of them on my own. Bun Bo Hue was delicious and has a good spice to it. Though most broths here are on the light side, not a deep rich broth. Prices are a bit more higher than other Vietnamese places in the area. My family's go to spot for pho. It was my first time visiting. Server was attentive, we got hot tea when we were seated. There were 4 of us - we got the combination extra big bowl of pho, bun bo hue, banh xeo and the house special U8 (grilled sliced pork & spring roll w/ angel hair noodle). Portions were large for all the dishes. Bun bo hue broth was very flavorful - probably the best in the area. Banh xeo had a good crunch to it and had ample shrimp, pork & bean sprouts in the crepe. The Vietnamese iced coffee was also excellent. The restaurant itself is spacious, a good amount of tables. There was a large party of about 50 arriving when we left - they were set up on one side of the restaurant and there were still tables available for other diners. I originally thought that the price was a bit high but after it came out it is actually an excellent value. I will probably get two more meals from what I took home only issue that I didn't reduce the rating for is the price of a drink that I had. Banh xeo again wonderful $20.95, one mixed drink $18.95. Great broth and portion size in the east side of Bk. My typical go to in this area is pho vietnam but this is comparable maybe slightly below them. The one thing that I don't like about here is the noodle smell. It's the unpleasant pho smell that I can't distinguish what it is. But to others this may not be something you notice or care about. read more

Big spacious Vietnamese restaurant in the area, compared to the other viet places in the neighborhood. Ordered the popular Xe Lua rice noodle soup with all the meats fixins' along with a side order of crispy spring rolls; wait wasn't too long and the atmosphere was relaxing as there's plenty of open space. The noodle soup came out in a huge bowl; I shared it with my mom and stay cannot finish the whole noodle soup; the spring rolls were really crispy and the dipping fish sauce just compliments so well with it. Growing up with Vietnamese food, I always love it when my friends shares an interest in the cuisine or hanker a craving for a nice bowl of pho or some cold noodles with grilled dishes. Rarely do I come to the Midwood Brooklyn area but I pleasantly surprised to find a huge line of Vietnamese restaurants in the neighborhood. A good group of foodie friends are locals in the area and recommended this place for Vietnamese cuisine, and it did meet my expectations in terms of food. All my friends went with the easy choices: pho or vermicelli noodle dishes. Both were appetizing and fresh, portions were majorly generous, even to the point everyone was satisfyingly full. My habit going into a Vietnamese restaurant is always to go for the pork chops dishes on a bed of rice. I chose the grilled marinated pork chops (com suon bi cha). To my surprise I got a dinner sized plate full of maybe seven pork chops and I was scared thinking I wouldn't be able to finish it. The sweet fish sauce marinade was delicious and I went through each chop with ease. Be still my heart, and I love a good pork dish. Funny enough my friends were so impressed with the appearance and size of my dish, they ended up ordering one for themselves. Success sale hahaha. The same also applies for my che ba mau (rainbow icee dessert drink). Service was very attentive and quick. It was a hot day and the waiters kept coming around to make sure our waters were refilled. Very spacious restaurant and cleanliness was there in the dining area and their large bathrooms. It was worth the extra walk to venture to. My appetite for grilled dishes was satisfied. My friend and I haven't seen each other in over a year so we settled on grabbing some Vietnamese food for dinner here. We ordered the summer roll for appetizers. I was a bit disappointed there were only 1.5 shrimps per roll so the shrimp flavor was barely there. I also felt the peanut sauce was a bit lacking in peanut flavor. My Vietnamese student recommended Bún bò Huế ($11.25) so I ordered that. I was a bit disappointed since the broth wasn't very concentrated. I also ordered a soda with yolk and condensed milk ($4.95). It was made with a raw yolk and it likes sweet soda with a yolk. I personally didn't really taste the yolk but my friend thought it was quite eggy. My friend enjoyed her noodles and Vietnamese coffee. The restaurant atmosphere was nice. The waiters were very attentive and knew where the items on the menu were by number! I remember when U Bar opened in about 2019 during the pre-pandemic days, looking inside and noting that I wanted to give them a try but being a creature of habit, I continued to go to a nearby competitor is also located on Ave U. Today, however, having finally feeling better after a week of COVID then another week with a rebound case, I wanted to make a fresh start and took the plunge...albeit via delivery! My order was delivered courteously and promptly. In Southeast Asian restaurants I usually begin with a traditional summer roll that is made with shrimp but opted for the healthier avocado roll. The rolls (two per order) were tightly wrapped - a skill that still eludes me! Each was filled with large pieces of fresh, ripe avocado and came with traditional peanut sauce. I felt that they tasted a bit bland and that adding either mint or cilantro would have improved their flavor. For my entree I ordered their Bun Bo Lui (grilled beef with sesame seasoning, and shredded lettuce, carrots, cucumbers and rice vermicelli) that came with sides of fish sauce, hoisin sauce and hot sauce. The beef was a bit dry but the flavor was quite good. So while maybe not 5-star outstanding, the food from here is worth a try! read more

Absolutely terrible customer service. We have been loyal customers and order from this place more than once a week. When ordering I had asked for a pho with extra onions. When the order came, not only were there no onions but also 2 pieces of meat. My order was 23 dollars for broth and noodles. When calling and asking about the order I was told I didn't pay for the onions and that's why they didn't bring them, and when asked about the meat, they said they would come pick up my order. Disgusting customer service. Instead of trying to keep their customers happy, this is how they act. For better quality Vietnamese food you can go up the block to pho Vietnam or pho hai just a few short blocks away. There they care about their customers. read more

Another restaurant joins the battle for Vietnamese food supremacy on Avenue U, but is it worth the visit on the west end of Sheepshead Bay's mini-Chinatown????? After months of passing by U Bar and passing up the opportunity to try them out, my wife and I FINALLY gave in and made the visit for takeout during the 2020 COVID pandemic in early September. We decided to order off of seamless and, at that very moment, we realized why we kept passing on U Bar - the pricing. It's not that the prices are exorbitantly high, but for Viet "fast food" it felt like it was, even if it was just $2 more than the well-established Viet restaurants on Avenue U. However, I've always been the "I'll try anything once" person and if the quality is way better than the competition they will have earned themselves a repeat customer. Being that it was our first time, we just had to go with the traditional, popular Viet entrees and an appetizer to share. Our appetizer of choice was the Goi Cuon (aka shrimp summer rolls). No shocker there for most. For entrees, my wife ordered the #1 - Xe Lua (aka combination extra big bowl) and I went with my usual Viet favorite #41 - Bun Cha Gio Thit Nuong (aka spring rolls and grilled pork with lettuce on rice vermicelli). Verdict? Ehhhhhhh average. It wasn't knock your socks off amazing and the food at most of these restaurants pretty much taste the same ... most of the time. My wife thought her #1 was OK and the shrimp summer rolls were also OK. However, the noodles in the Bun Cha were a little different, and unfortunately, not in a good way. It had an odd, soapy taste to it that kept leaving a weird aftertaste in our mouths with each bite. I managed to finish eating the Bun Cha, but it wasn't that enjoyable. Everything else in the Bun Cha was good though. When I arrived to pick up, there was plenty of outdoor seating available and the interior was spacious and nice. I do wish we would have visited prior to the pandemic and seen what the quality of their food was like when it was fresh and served to us at the restaurant. The prices are $1-$2 more than the competition, but like I said, it's not outrageously high. Will we be back? We have always loved the food quality and lower prices at the other Viet restaurants on Avenue U, but if conditions change, we might give dining at the restaurant a chance and maybe our opinions could change. read more

I came half a hour before opening and I think the boss saw me just lingering around so he asked me if I was waiting for someone. If I gave more detail and said I was waiting for my friend to eat at this place, it seemed as if he'd set up the outdoor dining tables and chairs for me despite it not being opening time yet. I ordered the grilled chicken vermicelli for $8.95. I have to say, it was really salty. There was no duck sauce that came with it so the noodles were really stiff and hard to grasp with my chopsticks. Note, we came here right when it opened. Only one person was operating the business at that time, not to mention dealing w a whole pandemic, so I definitely understand. I also think I just picked a bad item because my friends ordered spring rolls, pho, banh mi (not on the menu, you have to ask for it), and vietnamese coffee and said they loved everything they got! According to them the coffee was rich but sweet, not bitter. The pho came in large portions so it was really worth the money. The spring rolls were crispy and had high quality flakes. WOW, last time I reviewed was their opening time, October 2019. I think one of my last time there was somewhere in January 2020 right before Covid-19 was serious in NYC, I had gotten sick shortly after (thought food poisoning and then the flu). So I didn't come by for awhile... then I was sick with a lingering cough for awhile... and then NYC went into quarantine later on. By then, I was fine/healthy. Lots of businesses closed down; people were in quarantine and stayed indoor. I paranoid about going outside, let alone venturing outside to restaurants to order takeout (U Bar is a bit far from home). When things settled and NYC begin reopening, my family &I took it slow. It was awhile before we venture out but we were missing our pho. We finally came back for take outs (seen the outdoor tents during summer for outdoor dining but never dined there). Finally, we got our pho! Delicious!!! We just came by recently for some take outs and it is still heavenly. Pho is always best during cold days and any time! The decor is nice with the little light fire lamps and the beads, also everything here is super clean including the men's bathroom which in most public places aren't the cleanest, the staff was also very nice to use giving us a 4 seat table even though it was just me and my dad, plus, the food came out pretty fast, if you are near this restaurant, I definitely recommend coming here sometime read more

Huge portions and a clean, spacious dining area, but the taste falls a little short compared to the other two Vietnamese restaurants that have been serving this area for the past few decades. Their menu is expansive and in 3 languages: Vietnamese, Chinese, and English. They also have a lot of Chinese dishes. Price is very competitive and affordable. This wouldn't be my go-to place, but if you're craving Vietnamese and want a filling meal, this is a good option. Unlike Pho restaurants in Southern Cali..this one had a Vietnamese decore and I liked it. It felt like I was in a Vietnamese restaurant..then you hear the Alternative Rock music playing and it just threw off the Vietnamese feel but I liked the decorations. New Viet restaurant to join the other two long-standing chains on Avenue U. Prices are similar to the other two restaurants as a #1 will run you $9. Soup base isn't as flavorful now but I'm sure it just needs time. The rice dishes here are definitely larger than the other its competitors. There are two types of spring rolls here: original pork or shrimp. I would suggest getting both as they are fried to perfection. Since it's a new place, they even give you flan for dessert for free and a fan as a parting gift. Time will tell if this place follows the trend of its predecessors and closes after a few months. Hopefully that changes at this location. This place is cash only I believe. read more

Ordered delivery last night from U Bar and was pleased with everything from the speed to the quality of the food. I ordered their Xe Lua ($12.25), Bun Bo Hue ($12.75), and Bi Cuon ($6.45). The broths for both noodle soups were quite flavorful and did not have a particularly strong MSG taste either. The Bi Cuon came with shredded pork and lettuce, but lacked both freshness and taste so I would not recommend that. I've also dined indoors at U Bar-- there is plenty of seating and the colorful lights lend a clubby-ish kind of ambience to the restaurant. I think the portions are quite generous, and although it is the most expensive Vietnamese restaurant around, the price difference is not that great. Good Vietnamese is difficult to find in this corner of Brooklyn, but I will say that U Bar is probably the best one out of the three along the strip of Ave U. read more

It's also very clean and spacious inside along with many seats and tables which is pretty much the only good thing this place has going for it. Come here if you don't want to wait for a table if the other Viet places on Avenue U are full. The food wasn't amazing or different, it was just big. Like big, big. Their Pho #1 - the bowl it comes in is like the size of two normal bowls, a pair of chopsticks can't rest in the middle. It's too wide for the chopsticks to rest upon. With such a big bowl, you would think that you would be getting a lot of noodles and meat but really it is just filled with so much broth. The broth isn't amazing either, it's just average. Pre-pandemic, the service here was great but now not so much. The prices have been heavily inflated with not the quantity of food or the quality of food to reflect the prices they charge. $13 for a just okay bowl of pho is robbery. $10 for a banh mi is also robbery.
