First off, I must say.....I'm terribly depressed that the Egg & I is gone. I loved their menu and First Watch does not have the same stuff so it's pretty sad. I tried the lemon ricotta pancakes and tried to recreate the ranch potatoes today. The pancakes themselves had a great taste, the lemon ricotta was just plopped on top, not really good so I pushed that to the side. The potatoes were not seasoned at all, really not good. The server told me that they weren't as good but I wanted to try and wow, it was a disappointment. In any case, I would try this place again but I'm honestly so sad that Egg & I has left Austin as the other 2 locations are also slated for the transition. An A-ok was given because the staff is super nice and it's not their fault that they couldn't serve me my favorites! read more

A-OK would probably be the best way to describe this place, but I am going to give them 4 starts because of the staff. People who work there are very sweet and friendly. The restaurant was very busy for the weekend brunch, but everyone there was doing their best to seat us fast (10 minutes wait only!). The food came out quickly as well, and it was fine, but it was not impressive. The egg sandwich was all right, salmon frittata was a little blend to my taste. The decor is pretty interesting. They are clearly going for this rustic country style look, wich pictures of barns on the walls, and it looks nice and cozy. However, it still feels like a chain restaurant with vinyl floor and pay-at-the-front once you are done with your meal. I guess I am spoiled by all this cool and trendy Austin unique fusion hot spots. To sum it up, if you are looking for inexpensive but decent food, very friendly and attentive service and crave a traditional American brunch in the northwest Austin - you will probably be happy, as you will get exactly what you expect. read more

Comfortable place for a nice breakfast/brunch. Our waitress, Jordan, was attentive, friendly, and helpful! The food was delicious and the coffee was so tasty and hot! I got the elevated egg sandwich, it had great flavor and was filling and fresh. My fiancé got the chickichanga, this his First Watch favorite... always a good option at all locations. Please move to credit card only and give handheld credit card readers to your waiters so there isn't a line out the door of people waiting to checkout -- or have the wait staff go run the rcredit cards for you. This is a stupid bottleneck. read more

Disclaimer: I really struggled to give this place 4 stars instead of 3, but I'm feeling generous today. I heard this place opened a couple days ago and I've had friends who've raved about this chain in the past so we thought we'd check it out. It's a super nice location and the staff are overly friendly, but we warned, as if 3/18/2017, they are still in training mode so the service isn't as great as it will be, I'm sure, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for that. My biggest complaint is purely preference and it's with the food. I ordered the ham eggs Benedict and a side of Biscuits and Gravy. I didn't care for either. Not that they were bad, but I didn't like their style. The hollandaise sauce on the eggs Benedict was a little too tart for my taste and the bread that they used was too hard...I tend to like mine on a lightly toasted English muffin. Also the biscuit was super dense and the gravy was super watery and had too much sausage in it. Again, these were all preferences of mine, so I'm sure other people would love them, but it could have been better for me. On a side note: the older guy who was greeting and running the register was VERY friendly and funny! Kudos to him! read more

All the food is healthy and made fresh to order. We had a great experience at this location. The place was clean, the staff was nice and attentive, and most of all, the food was delicious! So disappointed by the change in menu. There was no option to make your own omelette. That was all I wanted. I'm not into Kale or Broccoli in my omelette although I love vegetables. The staff that I loved in the past was also confused and apologizing. I could not even ask for alternatives for many of items. My husband loved the Le Cordon Blue skillet and he could not find an appropriate alternative and he was not happy. Since my husband (a disabled Veteran) could not find what he wanted nor get an alternative because the staff said they could not do it. My day was Hell because my husband did not get what he wanted. Great morning breakfast! The service was fantastic and the wait was much shorter than quoted, and included complementary coffee! Atmosphere is nice, casual and very clean. Food was great! If ordering a pancake I recommend ordering a flavor because the plain is very plain. Avocado toast was to die for and the bacon was awesome. Will be returning! read more

I was so looking for reviewing this restaurant. Today I finally came and tried "brilliant beet toast". First of all, the server was not so nice. I know they are busy. But she literally threw the menu on the table and kept saying i will come back later and later. Don't be surprise. It took more than 25mins just for order. Toast itself was good and warm. Excellent service and speed during lunch time. Didn't have to wait and everything was deliciously fresh. The lunch combo is a great deal as the half sandwich and salad are solid portions, but not enough to make you overly full. Great as a healthy option for lunch if you have 30 minutes. Well, recently my daughter and I spent breakfast there every day for one whole week. Service was excellent and the manager Angie could not have been more professional, friendly, welcoming and anticipating any possible need well ahead - . A great asset to this lovely breakfast place. . Food has always been delicious, well arranged & served. For this I gladly give a five star. Now then - last Friday I came back by myself. No one was at the door to open it but a hurrying guest came to my rescue. I cannot use my right leg therefore I have to content with a pair of my trekking stix to help me along. As I entered the cafe there was no one to greet guests so I proceeded to hobble along to one of the booth where we usually enjoy breakfast. There was a man frantically running around who ran backwards straight at me all set to run me over. I had to shout "stop" which he did with about two inches between us. I settled down into my booth trying to recover from my shock & close encounter! Where was Angie?? I ordered my favorite toast with avocados and over medium eggs with one strip of your famous bacon. My special request was the food to be served on a hot plate. When it finally arrived the bacon came on a small plate all by itself. It was a paper thin piece of mostly fat, undercooked and totally without any flavor. Not much to eat there. It had no resemblance to your famous bacon which I had awaited with great anticipation. Then there was a pretty rectangular plate with my favorite bread which was barely toasted covered in mashed avocado. The two eggs came just fried not over medium sitting on an ice cold plate next to the toast which was cold by now. My first bite into the avocado toast took me by surprise!! The avocado was absolutely ice cold - I could barely gag it down. No flavor. The eggs by that time were getting colder and did not ameliorate the tasteless avocado toast which is my favorite and usually excellently presented. Why in the world would anyone ever consider serving one sliver of a piece of bacon all by itself on another separate plate? For two dollars?? It would have been nice to have it all together on one plate. Never, ever put an avocado into the refrigerator or freezer. It was horrible!!! The coffee was excellent as usual. This was by far the ever worst food I had received in this cafe. I realize there are good and bad days but these were easy to avoid mistakes. Where was Angie? The hysterical man kept running through the rooms without stoping, barely paying attention to any customers, just running aimlessly without any apparent purpose.... Strange. When I left to pay at the exit he never made eye contact, never asked how my meal was or said good bye or thank you. I started to tell him how we always had enjoyed our meals here when he interrupted me without looking at me taking the next customer's bill & talking to him briefly instead. I enjoyed the coffee and the Wall Street Journal which is a great bonus at this place. Please bring back Angie and her crew!! I can't give any stars for Friday's encounter. This place has gone downhill since they changed names (used to be the egg and I). The first time we went here since the change, the staff were just completely off- we were forgotten about for a while, then there were a couple different people trying to serve us, then orders took forever. More recently the food was way sub-par. They seem to be trying for a more healthful menu as part of their image change, and maybe that's part of the problem. The asparagus and crab omelette, for example... sounds like something a trendy healthful place might try. There was a bunch of crab (too much, weird complaint, I know) tossed in an egg with some cheese (which did not go well with he crab) and tomatoes. The asparagus (which I love and grew up eating from the garden) was wholly inedible. I've never known someone to try to eat asparagus that small, much less serve it at a cafe. The stalks were tiny- about 5 stalks might have made up the diameter of a pencil. You know what happens when you cook something stringy that's that small? It's like trying to eat hay (maybe wet hay). I pulled it all out. I guess I'm glad there was only about one 6-inch stalk's worth. My husband's meal was also less than mediocre. I don't think we'll be returning. I wish they would just go back to what they did well. Egg and I had been our neighborhood staple since moving here :( read more

We miss The Egg & I and were surprised to find that this is now, "First Watch". Some positives & negatives: Positives: 1. Food was ok; substitutions were allowed for allergies, but was surprised that there were no Gluten-Free options. 2. Waiter was friendly & helpful especially in making sure food did not contain allergens as requested. Negatives: 1. The floor is slick and our elderly mother would have slipped and fallen when transferring from her walker to the chair and vice versa had I not held the chair still. This is a huge liability for the restaurant if a patron were to slip and fall trying to get in or out of the chair. 2. The food tasted so-so; nothing special. Probably will not return, especially with an elderly person. They seem to be trying to appeal to a younger, hipper crowd now. I'm surprised that there were no gluten-free options given their apparent focus on "healthy" eating. read more

I simply asked the guy how much longer is the wait, the rude, short bald guy with glasses responded it's only been ten minutes.This made us turn around and leave. We were looking for the Egg & I, found this rustic version of brunch on a very cold, Austin morning. The wait was not long, we were seated and served quickly. I enjoyed my Trifecta! Fluffy waffle, great eggs and fresh strawberry jam. Having our own coffee pot was perfect for our bottomless cups. The best part? The maple syrup was WARM! Food is excellent every time we eat here. The servers are all awesome and provide excellent service. Lauren was very helpful and checked on us constantly. The only issue is one of the hostesses. She's got an attitude as nasty as her bottom lip piercing. Had an attitude upon greeting us at the door. It's sad when one person can really ruin a great restaurant. I would have given this place a 4, however I was disappointed in the lack of veggie options for a place that gives off a healthy vibe. I was lured in by the carrot and kale juice and that is really the only menu item that didn't contain chicken, bacon, or eggs. Even every single salad on the menu comes with chicken, even when it isn't necessary. I ordered the avocado toast, and subbed the eggs for a side of mixed green salad and the Carrot Juice. Their bread is cut thick and is very delicious. The carrot ginger juice was also really good. Now that I know the place was bought by the Egg and I it is clear why everything had an egg on it, however I was expecting a bit more variety than the standard meat heavy entrees. I was driving around trying to find a place to grab a quick breakfast before work and so glad I tried First Watch. It is in the old Egg and I location and WOW what an improvement. The food was incredibly fresh and the coffee was great. My server was friendly and fast. I had the Power Breakfast Quinoa bowl and it was very tasty: fresh ingredients and ample portions. The food would of tasted really good if the waitress bring it out on time. We waited for 20 mins for 2 omelets, and when we got our food, everything was cold. Omelet was cold, and the doughnut holes are cold, the roasts are extra cold and hard, I cannot even take a bite. I eventually had to go and get the hostess attention and inform her that our order had not been taken yet as well as our drink orders. Long wait to get seated. Long wait to get food. Finally got food and it was bland. My wife got her food and it had bacon in it, despite her ordering a vegetarian dish. So they put the order back in, but instead of putting on top of the queue they must of put it in back. I ended having to leave to meet someone else and my wife still hadn't gotten her food after another 20 minutes. The juice was good but not good enough to make up for the experience. read more

This place would have definitely been a 5 star hands down, but the service was slooooooooow. I'm finding more and more that I'm sitting and waiting for service for so long I'm already ready to order my meal by the time the waitstaff gets to me. In this case I was alright with it cause it took me a while to look over the menu as there were SO many things to chose from. I was telling myself that I would probably have to come back every night for the next two weeks just to try everything that caught my eye. 5 at our table, all ordered different things, and my fork made it to everyone's plate.
