I got an update cause I went back and got some burgers with my buddies. The burgers and onion rings were fantastic!!

MLK Day holiday... reflecting on the monumental work that Martin Luther King did for civil rights as I eat my breakfast. It's been a minute since I've dined at Waterloo ice house. I asked Sam the manager why it is called a icehouse and he said back in the day they cooled beverages in through of ice. He also reminded me about the Waterloo name. This was the original name Austin, TX. We have Waterloo records, Waterloo water and Waterloo icehouse. I ordered potatoes and grits with pecans from Dawson, my server. He was pleasant and accomdating. These vegan options were quite tasty, one my more tasty meals on my fast. Important to note they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In addition, they have an awards program. Parking is also plentiful. Interestingly, Water has a De-Dice night, where unplug from your device with an opportunity to save. Great start to my day off...very welcoming atmosphere.

First time in Waterloo Icehouse restaurant and it felt like a true local establishment and I was welcomed upon ordering. They have great customer service with the front counter workers. The ordering process is different from other casual dining restaurants you walk in take a menu and look at what you want and place your order at the front counter and pay then they bring your food out to you. If you order a drink you fill it up yourself not a problem at all. They have TVs inside for Texas longhorns football games plus NFL games once the seasons begin too which I love that amongst other local customers as well. I will definitely be back the food is cooked fresh to order and is hot and delicious and hits the soft spot once you're done. I didn't see a list of any desserts offered here which is different however they serve breakfast weekly til 11am and and also have lunch/dinner too. Highly recommend checking out this establishment. Also ESPN radio hosts here during longhorns football games here and there pretty cool if you don't mind me saying so!

Chicken, fried steak, mashed potatoes and extra gravy. A little disappointed in the quality of meat, very very chewy.

Been coming here off and on for years and we do like their varied menu. Lots of different offerings for lots of different tastes. Today I ordered the chicken fried steak with green beans, mashed potatoes and an extra side of gravy. Got to say I was a little disappointed. It seemed to me like the food was under seasoned a bit and the chicken fried steak had too much of a chew to it, so much so that I didn't really enjoy it. The accompanying green beans tasted okay though seasoned well. As much as I really like chicken fried steak, I'll have to rethink this restaurant's version because it's not the way I remember tasting from years back.

I have been here several times and always get an excellent meal, from breakfast to burgers. The service is also very good. The servers are personable and professional. They ensure you are taken care of. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I also love the old truck up front...classic!

Cinnamon pecan pancakes and Waterloo migas con chorizo

Waterloo Ice House has such mixed reviews on r/austinfood and Yelp. My one brunch experience here was great, but I can't help but fear my next visit will change my opinion on it. I had a full stack of the cinnamon pecan pancakes, and my friend got the Waterloo migas con chorizo. We both thought the food was really good, and the portions were huge. Our leftovers were enough for another meal. I paid $14 in total for my meal, which is a good price for how much food there was. Our server was very attentive.

Banana cinnamon pancakes. The butter had cinnamon in it and tasted great with the pancakes and syrup.

The chicken was cooked to perfection but that was the only thing we truly enjoyed. The biscuit was seemingly made in a sheet and cut. Even when we ordered a side it was split in half, so you never really got that satisfying bite of biscuit with the flaky top. Everything we had (the badass bacon and eggs, brisket breakfast sandwich, chicken sandwich, chicken and biscuit sandwich, and biscuits and gravy) were okay but not super. I was disappointed in the gravy which was just a little odd. The side of red potatoes was interesting but not our favorite. No hate to the place, just not at all what I was expecting. The service and /decor were great. The food was just not to our taste.

Their burger is easily one of the best I've had in Austin, especially paired with their thin, crispy fries. It's my go-to order almost every time. One thing I love is that they switch up the steak portion of the menu a few times a year, and it never disappoints. Right now they have the steak au poivre, which is incredible, although I'm still craving their steak frites and hoping it makes a comeback. The escargot and French onion soup are also favorites of mine. At this point, June's has become a staple in our house--usually with a couple of Diet Cokes and either the burger or whatever steak they're featuring. A few of my friends swear by the chicken sandwich (fair warning: it can get a little messy!), the half roasted chicken, and the tuna crudo, so you really can't go wrong no matter what you order. On top of the amazing food, the staff is always incredibly kind and welcoming, which keeps us coming back. I definitely recommend making a reservation since it tends to get pretty busy, especially during peak hours.

There is a QR code that you're required to use to join the waitlist/queue, but this is not clearly communicated on their website. You essentially have to arrive at the restaurant and figure it out once you're there. For a restaurant that is known for having long waits and high traffic, I feel like this information should be clearly stated online so people can plan accordingly. Once I joined the queue, I was number 43 and ended up waiting about an hour and a half before being seated. I understand that popular restaurants can have long wait times, but the lack of transparency about how the process works made the experience more frustrating than it needed to be. Once inside, the ambiance was actually quite quaint and charming. That said, considering how much traffic this restaurant gets, I was surprised by how limited the space is. I honestly think expanding the property would make a huge difference, although I understand that may not be entirely within their control. One thing I will give them major credit for is the menu. Online, the selection makes it look somewhat limited, but once you're there, they actually have 50+ food options, so there is plenty to choose from. That was definitely a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, my entrée was disappointing. I ordered a shredded beef taco with salsa and substituted a side salad. The beef was extremely tender, but unfortunately, it was also very dry. The salad was another disappointment because the vinaigrette was honestly not good. I don't think I've ever had a vinaigrette that I actively disliked until this meal. Thankfully, my fiancé had a much better experience. He ordered an enchilada and said it was one of the top five enchiladas he's ever had, so clearly there are some standout dishes on the menu. That definitely made me curious about trying something different if I ever return. I also really enjoyed that they offer hibiscus tea. I was very happy to see it on the menu, although I personally think it would be better served on its own rather than incorporated into one of their mixed drinks. The drink itself was just okay, but the hibiscus flavor was great. Overall, I can see why this place has become an Austin staple, but I think the experience could be improved significantly by making the waitlist process much clearer online and by improving the consistency of some of the food. The menu has a lot of potential, and clearly, some dishes are excellent! Unfortunately, mine just wasn't one of them.
