This was actually a very delightful little place tucked away in a hidden hotel in The Domain. I guess this is technically a hotel lobby bar, but I thought the food and drinks were way better than the average hotel. The Margaritas are strong and boozy , making it one of the strongest in North Austin in taste. They ran out of a beer we wanted so they suggested another local brew. It was so great that we went to the brewery a couple days later. Kudos to the great service! As for the food, it was a pretty big menu and everything was good. I thought my country fried steak was a little on the salty side, but everything, especially the potatoes, was nice and hot! My buddy got a good looking burger. We stayed at Lone Star Court and were starving so we ordered from the Water Trough. It was nice that they were able to bring the food to our room. The person was friendly and we don't have any complaints about the service. But the food was NOT good. I ordered a chicken strip meal because I wanted something very simple and quick. The fries were ok but the chicken strips were so bad. Most of the breading had fallen off somehow prior to me even opening the box and the flavor.. well there was none. My fiance got a burger and he was not a fan as well. We are big foodies and were really disappointed, actually shocked at how not good it was. My friend was determined to get me out of the house as I have spent the last three days at home mainly coughing and sneezing from allergies and throat infection. She persuaded me to see a live band at the Water Trough (my first time there). Reluctantly, I agreed to do so (went coughing and screaming...literally and figuratively). We got to the Water Trough about 8:30 pm and she ordered a drink. The band sounded down home and soulful. She thought they would play until 11 pm. Unfortunately, that was not the case. They played until 9 pm and ended their set. Our server came over and told us that the kitchen had closed at 8:30 pm and she was not aware when she gave us menus. Our server was very nice, but seemed extremely tired. Therefore, my friend cancelled her drink. We decided to find another restaurant in the domain that had good food. The Water Trough is a funky, eclectic restaurant and bar in the Lone Star hotel at the Domain (directly across the street from Dillard's and Maggiano's). It has indoor outdoor seating which is seamless between the two. The wooden ceiling is high and intricate...really a piece of art. The Water Trough overlooks a pool at the Lone Star hotel. We've been to The Water Trough a few times now and in aggregate it is a fun and lively place to dine at. The closest parking is the Orange Garage so the walk over is quick. Breakfast or dinner, it is a nice, clean place with a good vibe and good food. The setting at night is much better as they have live music most nights and put up the garage shutter so you can hear it from their outdoor portion as well. On the breakfast side of things we sat quickly and service was okay. We ordered the Texas breakfast tacos and the pancakes, hash browns, and bacon a la carte. The breakfast tacos were good. We got them with brisket and the portion was huge, although we wish it came with three tortillas instead of two because it was more than we could fit into them. The eggs, cheese, and brisket all came together and despite what reads as a smaller dish, we were pretty full by it. As for the pancakes, hash browns, and bacon; all were pretty classic versions of them. The pancakes were good, thin and sweet. The hash browns were cooked well with a slight crunch and the bacon was the highlight of the three, full of flavor with a nice chew and crisp. We also ordered chocolate milk, but whatever we got was NOT chocolate milk. It was closer to a frothed drink and had cinnamon in it which was a bit strange. The waitress could clearly see we were not feeling it and she comped it on our bill which was very, very nice of her to do without asking. The dinner here is much better than the breakfast admittedly. The live music certainly helps and the vibe with the low lighting gives it a very nice feel when dining. We had the country fried steak and LSC burger, both very good. The country fried steak was one of the better ones we've had here, extremely savory and the fries were good too. The burger was juicy and full of flavor as well. Beware the fries here are really home fries or cubed fries in case geometry is not your thing. Ultimately, The Water Trough is a very good place to eat at and is probably a bit overlooked due to its location in The Domain, but between solid food and good live music scene, we don't see why anyone wouldn't want to stop by. We'd recommend this spot as an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the north Domain and for those preferring a more relaxed and intimate night of food and music. read more

Our manager was paying for HH, and they chose this place. We came during the cold season, and this place has a huge fireplace. The interior feels very cozy and warm. It wasn't packed and it felt nice when I got here. We go drinks and apps. The apps was good for bar food and the drink was good. They have a good selections of drinks to chose from. My friend and I arrived here around 7PM on a Saturday night. The place was relatively empty, but got busier before we left around 10PM. Decor is rustic and welcoming with a huge fireplace in the center of the indoor space and a fire pit providing a cozy ambiance in the outdoor area. My Chill Cowboy cocktail was deliciously floral and well balanced with a fresh mint garnish. Our server was very attentive, and I never ran out of water. When I asked about ingredients in my meal, she promptly asked the chef and provided the information I requested. My miso salmon with baby bok choy was well seasoned and perfectly cooked. I really enjoyed the sesame purée made with squash. My friend enjoyed her generously portioned brisket tacos, and said the brisket was amazing. The restaurant and bar is connected to a hotel with reserved parking, so you will need to park either in the Orange garage or somewhere else nearby. Beautiful setting--the smell of the wood and the pool in the background created a great atmosphere. However, the food was very disappointing. The chicken sliders were dry and had no sauce; the concept was good, but they definitely need some kind of sauce. The country fried chicken was overly salty with barely any gravy. The brisket was the worst part--at first I thought it was burnt bacon and started pulling it off the Reuben, but that was actually the brisket: hard and crispy, and the quesadillas were the same way. Luckily, even on game night, there was no wait for a party of 4. We seated ourselves near the bar. The rustic-barn vibe was welcoming, however the over abundance of flys was not. I believe if the doors had been closed off from the pool area it may have not been as bad, but we were constantly swatting them away. The food itself was alright. The $25 country fried steak was good, the loaded baked potato was really just a half with melted cheese and bacon and was pretty disappointing considering the price point. While staying at Lone Star Court I had the opportunity to dine at Water Trough. The place is really like like eating inside a big barn with bar on one side and fireplace on the other. There are TVs all around and live music at night. The first night I enjoyed a Lone Star Beer and Peach Cobbler. The beer was good and the cobbler was tasty. I thought it could have been a little sweeter. The next morning I had breakfast where I ordered the Classic Breakfast Plate. I customized it to include scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. There was free coffee to help wakeup. Breakfast was very good and had a tentative server to make sure we were satisfied. I never know this place was here and glad was able to discover it. read more

The Watertrough has a rustic and cozy charm that you'll never forget. Bartenders are super friendly, and the indoor + outdoor space is super spacious. Indoors you can find tables + many cozy couches. Update: The day after this experience, my credit card has multiple charges on it. As a business owner myself, this business needs to look into this bartender/"manager". Something shady is going on. Patrons - check your charges after visiting this establishment. Horrible customer service - as a local, I have loved walking to this bar to grab drinks. After the experience I had tonight, we will not be back. I ordered a $22 smoked old fashioned off the menu and was up charged an additional charge for it being "smoked". ?? I expect a charge for an alcohol upgrade but he explained that there was a second up charge for a smoked drink...even though the one I ordered from the menu said smoked. I mentioned my concern thinking there was a mistake and the bartender told me he was the manager and he was unwilling to do anything to help - "Sorry you had the wrong expectations". Long story short- as someone who is okay expecting to pay $25+ for a drink, I am not okay being disrespected and talked down or paying over $60 for 2 drinks. During corona-alona, I found myself with a full weekend off, and since it had been about eight months since I had done anything, and slowly going outta my mind, I decided even if I spend a couple days in a hotel room watching TV, that I was gonna do it. Lone Star Court had some good rates so away I went. and...hanging around the hotel, and room, was mostly what I ended up doing. I ate here for dinner a couple times, and it really was a lot better than I expected it to be. The food was pretty good for bar stuff, and the drinks were much better than most hotel bars. I got the cheese fries one night, the portion was enough for two people, and it was loaded with stuff. The burger and fries another night, with the burger being as good as any high end burger place. The mixed drinks, particularly the Old Fashioned's were really good (to good, honestly, whew) and service was good too. If you're in the Domain area, you should check it out sometime. As hotel bars go this one has more vibe than most -- and before I go further let me say you can go here hungry and you won't be disappointed. Set aside in a different building from the hotel office, the Water Trough continues the trailer park theme of the hotel with picnic tables and cozy, fireside seating that invites strangers to saddle up next to one another and become new friends. There is often live music here (duh! Its Austin) but the performers are in the corner furthest from the bar and you can use the long fire pit as a sound barrier if you want to block some of the sound and try to continue a casual conversation. The drinks here are on point. I discovered Dripping Springs vodka a few years ago and it has surpassed all others as my fave. I love the fact they feature Dripping Springs in many of their signature drinks. The food menu is generally stepped-up, southwest comfort food featuring salsas, chili and lots of good proteins. TIP: If it is cold out bring a jacket. It is often drafty if you're not next to the fire! read more

The atmosphere is 5 stars but didn't have a great experience with service. Ordered queso tots that came out cold 20 minutes later and when I took them back they just never brought out more. Not enough to totally turn us off, we'll probably try again another time but enough that we wanted to leave rather than explain we wanted more and wait another 20 minutes. My girlfriend and I found this hidden oasis on a cold winter night, and we were immediately smitten. Rustic Texas decor sets an excellent tone, and sitting by the roaring fire on a frigid night absolutely hit the spot. Now that it has gotten warmer, we continue to make the Water Trough a regular stop on our weekend excursions. The staff is attentive, the drinks are reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is incredibly warm and inviting. It was 1 AM. My beaux and I had just sped from Houston to Austin in record time. In serious need of some booze, and in observation of the time, we quickly trotted over to the Water Trough, conveniently located on hotel site. Juan, the bartender, is a one man show and quite a sight at 1 in the morning. We apologized for showing up so late, and he assured us not to worry. I ordered the Texas Tea, recommended by the bartender, and my boyfriend got a double Titos with soda. Dagnabbit, that Texas Tea made me about as happy as a clam at high tide! Juan was very friendly and lively considering the time. About 30 minutes later (and 10 shots in) we were making friends and chatting it up with everyone else in the bar. All of Juan's made up shots were super tasty. As I neared a state of belligerence, I requested a specialty shot - something totally original and strong. The shot was so good and it knocked me right on my ass. I asked him, "What's the name of your shot?" and he replied with nothing. Completely impressed with my fun time at the Water Trough, I added a fat tip to the check. Underneath the tip I wrote, "Name of your shot? 'The Number Juan'" Hahh... I'm hilarious when I'm drunk. They offer a very decent complimentary breakfast to cure any small hangover you may have. After about 8 min she walked over and said here as she handed us two menus. We gave our drink order and away she went for another 10 minutes. She then walked back and stood there w her pad without saying anything like "what can I get you folks" We ordered and without batting an eye she says... "Do you want to pay now?" We looked at each other and figured maybe this was Texas tradition since it was our first time visiting... I handed her the credit card.
