It is a cute "diner style" restaurant. It feels like home the moment you walk in. What I love the most is they have so many speciality coffee options. If you work remotely, and want to get out to get some work done, I would recommend Java. They also have a small area outside for sitting.

I'm rarely up in North Austin, but recently had the opportunity to try this neighborhood spot. My date told me he's come here several times already, and I would later find out that it's popular! Luckily we got there before the lined formed, and got seated in their last cozy booth table. The coffee menu intimidated me as someone with regular choice paralysis at specialty coffee shops. They have multiple seasonal options as well as signatures. I decided on the hot cookie butter latte because it was chilly that morning (funny considering 7 days later it's way hotter). For food, I asked the server's opinion and he suggested the Greek Omelet over the Ham & Cheese. What a perfect recommendation! I got my hashbrown AND pancake fix (thanks to my date who shared his sides), because we don't have Waffle Houses in Austin. I also wanted to spread my biscuits with peanut butter instead of the tableside fruit jams, and our server again helped out & delivered a sizable small tub of peanut butter. I felt bad that I couldn't use all of it but whatever brand they have, I need it! Overall, this experience reminds me of the brunch places I used to go to all over Atlanta. I'm not sure if the influencers have found this yet - I hope they don't. It's so uniquely neighborly and old timey diner vibes, that their promotion would render it inauthentic.

I've come to cafe Java twice now for breakfast and think it's a solid breakfast spot. The staff is friendly and attentive. The food is solid but there's nothing too special about it. I've ordered omlettes and pancakes and they certainly hit the spot but in Austin there are so many speciality restaurants that sometimes a very decent breakfast spot can't compare as strongly. I wish I could rate this spot a 3.5 because it's solid and I'd come back but there's just nothing super special about it. Coffee is good and sweet and lots of fun flavors.

Love Cafe Java! A very cute and local Austin spot that is always very busy. Wait time is usually 15-20 minutes on a weekend for brunch but it's always well worth it. Think diner vibes and that's what you get at Java! I love their coffee and breakfast tacos as well as their platters. My favorite thing about Java is that the service is always incredible and prices are on the cheaper side

Came as a place of recommendation. This place was decent, fair prices, good service, fast food. I will say portions are generous. This place is pretty busy, I would say though, for the location, I'm surprised it's so busy. I will have one thing to say though, it's pretty on par with other places I've gone, nothing really special. Does feel like a mom and pop shop though

On our continued hunt for a cheap and delicious breakfast place we found ourselves at Cafe Java. We've taken their coffee to go many times but never fully sat down so we were very excited. The restaurant does get packed very frequently so we put ourselves on the waitlist through Google. When we arrived we were seated immediately, skipping a line of 5+ parties (it pays to prepare). Upon sitting down we were greeted (kinda, not really) by our waitress who was very low energy and avoidant. She took our orders through a handheld device and didn't lift her eyes up one time during the process. We ordered a corn beef hash platter, the French toast, and cinnamon rolls. Our food came out extremely quickly despite how busy the restaurant was which was nice to see. To sum the food up: it was not good. The corn beef hash tasted like they uncanned it and grilled it for 30 seconds before plating it. The hash browns were average, the eggs a bit below. The French toast was not good, lacking any flavor or real depth to the actual bread, as well as the bacon looked crispy but somehow was not. We had very high hopes for the cinnamon rolls but were met with the laziest excuse for one we have ever seen. The roll itself is large and coated with very little icing and a ton of strawberries (why???). It tasted like a hint of cinnamon and pretty much capped off what we were feeling about the food to that point anyway. Throughout our time there our server didn't check on us once, not even to refill our cups of coffee. When it was time for the bill and to collect her tip was the only time she showed any real enthusiasm to come over. Maybe it was a series of unfortunate events, maybe it was an off day. Either way it's safe to assume we will not be back to try Cafe Java out again.

I've been coming here since I was 19 years old! I'll be 33 this month and it has always been great! I used to come a lot when I lived here and always make it a point to come every time I visit! Whole family loves it! Great coffee, great specials, great prices, great service. Love it and might even come back tomorrow for our second day of vacation.

Bricia's service was outstanding! Give her a raise! Got the Java breakfast, the signature breakfast dish. It was excellent!

This is my favorite restaurant for breakfast. They're open early and the food is excellent.

Home cooking breakfast with eggs & bacons and toast.

Breakfast still good. Must been a bad day for table server. I am feel not welcome and maybe I am single but I see the server smiles and welcome party of two or big families to the table. Ignoring my table when I need napkin and coffee refill. I came here for good breakfast every other week but today not welcome and unfriendly. Food still great but I think I come back maybe once a month. Sorry for negative review because I feel single person are not welcome. I still recommend for families and big groups but you will be left out if you single and minority. Thanks for understanding.

It was nice but nothing special. They cover the basics and you get what you ask for. I also got a specialty coffee which was nice, they have more coffees and flavors than I've ever seen available. Service was nice too. Be prepared for a wait on the weekends. The place is pretty small.

My husband and I came here this past Sunday. We put our names on the waitlist in google while we drove down there, and I am not sure if that was what set off the chain of events to follow. When we got there, I double checked that we were on the waitlist, and once I confirmed, I went over to the counter to order some iced coffee to drink while we waited. The woman working there gave me the cold shoulder and seemed irritated that I was ordering coffee, which I didn't understand. The space was really small, and I didn't know where to stand to not be in the way while I waited. Maybe that was the problem? After being called for our table we were pointed to a table, and for about 5-ish minutes, we weren't given menus, drinks, or anything and no one came to check on us. I got this weird feeling like I wasn't welcome, and I didn't know why. When someone finally did come to take our orders, she seemed annoyed, and when we asked for a glass of water or a side of salsa (which seem like pretty benign requests) we felt like we were inconveniencing the staff. The redeeming quality was the food. The pancakes were some of the best I have had in a while, and the hash browns and bacon were crisp and well seasoned. The food might make it worth a return trip, but probably only for takeout. We didn't realize how much the service would impact our experience, but no one wants to feel unwanted when spending money somewhere.

Josh is amazing! He was our server and was so attentive and kind. We got the double shot teddy graham latte and strawberry matcha. Pretty solid drinks to wake us up. We also ordered the ribeye platter and split decision. The food was absolutely delicious and the portions were more than enough to fill you up. Definitely coming back on my next trip to Austin.

Unfortunately, the kitchen just wasn't on their game this day. We went for brunch and it is a lovely restaurant with some amazing looking pastries. My ratings of the food we got are below. Overall, everything was just okay and not something I would order again. Our order: Salami and cheese - 1/10, not even edible with how much olive oil they dumped on it. Hard cheese and meat. None of us touched it. Frites - 9/10, hard to go wrong here. Nice and crispy French cruller - 7/10, I think this is just personal presence here I wished it was warmed up. Flavor was good but it was a little dry. Burger - 5/10, the flavor is there and definitely has potential but it was so bloody and rare which is not what we asked for. My friend has a gluten allergy and she asked for the burger lettuce wrapped and it just came on top of a huge chunk of iceberg so wouldn't recommend that if you want it lettuce wrapped. Chicken sandwich - 8/10, this was good with a nice crispy chicken. It could have used something sweet to balance the spice though it was a little one dimensional.

Upon entry was greeted by Melissa and sat in her section. The decor is very diner type with low, cozy booths and few tables and chairs. Not too big of a space and not sure if there is more seating elsewhere. Anyhoo, coffee was good and I got the Royal toast and a single pancake with eggs, and sausage. Ample amount of food and def had take away box. Everything was tasty and the buttermilk pancake was amazing with just syrup. Melissa was kind enough to provide little cups to take syrup home along with the tael away container. They had a daily special and a board above the kitchen with other items. I drove by it for 20 years on the way to Avenue Barber Shop. I wanted shredded beef tacos but couldn't get them without cilantro so I chose shredded beef enchiladas (with an $8!) side of chips and salsa. My wife ordered scrambled eggs, bacon and home fries. She requested soft eggs, as she always does because too many places overcook them. The chips and salsa arrived. I was immediately disappointed. The menu said "we make our own chips." They were thick and yellow and appeared to be run-of-the-mill, out-of-a-bag chips. I prefer the thin white ones. I took one bite of salsa, and that was one bite too many. Cumin. I pushed it all aside. Cumin doesn't belong in salsa. (Sorry. I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley.) My enchiladas came with black beans, and there was cumin in them. Cumin is overused and abused in most restaurants. I couldn't eat them. The rice was good but the chipotle sauce on the enchiladas was not. I scraped most of the sauce off and ate one enchilada, mainly because I just needed something in my stomach. We were still 45 miles from home. I pushed my plate away. I also ordered coffee. One sip of that was all I could stand. Too weak for me. It gets worse, much worse. My wife's eggs were barely cooked. She asked the waiter for some cooked eggs. He took her plate and returned about four minutes later. The eggs were still not cooked. She tried another bite but couldn't eat them. Her bacon was tough as a boot and not chewable. The home fries were average, but by the time her plate arrived at our table for the second time, they were cold. I pulled my card out waiting for our excellent server to return. He asked how everything was (he had to notice two plates still covered with food) and we politely told him. I ate one enchilada and some rice. My wife had two bites of egg and two bites of potato. He apologized and handed me the check. $65. Nothing comped and nothing adjusted. A manager should've been summoned. How does a place like this have any customers? It was our first and last visit.

It's a small space, with only around eight tables and a tiny kitchen behind the counter. It's a bit hard to locate from outside. There's no big sign on the window indicating the restaurant's name, just a plastic A-frame sign outside the building's doors. When I got there, four of the eight tables were empty but the dirty dishes had not yet been cleared. It took close to 10 minutes for the tables to be bused. Because the kitchen is so small, I'd recommend going up to the counter to order as soon as you get there. I believe you can also place your order online using the QR code on the table, but I didn't try that method. I ordered the lox n found, a toasted croissant roll with smoked salmon, avocado, dill ricotta, arugula, onion, and capers.
