Came here on a Sunday dinnertime with some friends for Vietnamese food. Showed up around 6 PM and they weren't too busy. Parking was plentiful. It's located in a strip mall with a pretty unassuming entrance. Service was great, we were warmly greeted, and they have a moderate amount of seating, though it wasn't crowded during our visit. Mostly Vietnamese food on the menu, but they also offer a lot of variety: Tom Kha Pho, iced coffee, Korean shaved ice (bingsoo), banh mi, and rice dishes. Feels like they're mostly Vietnamese focused with some fun extras mixed in. It's a pretty chill setup, you pay first at the counter, then they bring your food along with a water bottle. Pho ($17, 7/10) - Pretty standard, good flavor, large portions in a large bowl - Standard sides with mint, lime, jalapenos, and bean sprouts - No option to choose your meat, it just comes with brisket and meatballs (though I didn't ask, so maybe substitutions are possible) - Generous with the meat portions though, which was a nice bonus - Broth was rich and flavorful, plenty of noodles, left me satisfied. Definitely can compete with specialized pho spots in town Someone else at the table got the Tom Kha Pho, and it looked really good and creamy, definitely want to try that next time. We've been to Azure a handful of times now, and I honestly think it deserves to be called Azure Asian Fusion & Cafe because the food deserves just as much attention as the drinks and desserts. It's surprisingly hard to find Asian fusion done properly. By that, I mean food created by people who actually understand the different Asian cuisines they're pulling from; not just combining ingredients and calling it fusion. Doing it right is knowing the flavors, techniques and ingredients well enough to bring them together in a way that is optimal and respectful to the cultures and regional cuisines being represented. Definitely check them out for lunch or dinner, or even just drop in for dessert like we've done: Bánh Xèo Tacos ($14.99) Vietnamese x Mexican: The banh xeo shell was incredibly crunchy without being messy. It's filled with shrimp, pork belly, vegetables and pickles, with a cilantro-lime dipping sauce. You can also ask for Vietnamese nước chấm. The meat was moist and flavorful, and that cilantro-lime sauce was seriously addictive. Vermicelli Bowl ($16.99) Vietnamese x Japanese: This was so refreshing. It had wakame, red pickles, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes and carrots. The meat was well-marinated, and I'd definitely order it again. Papaya Salad ($13.99) Vietnamese x Thai. It was served with a whole fried soft-shell crab and shrimp chips. It leans sweeter from the Vietnamese nước chấm, which I personally prefer but still kept the nod for raw crab for the Thai but in a way of the fried softshell crab. We've also had their croffles, drinks and bingsu, but the Chè Thái Bingsu ($13.99 L / $10.99 M) is our favorite. Fantastic spot for some delicious Asian fusion food! I ordered the Karaage and Pho Tom Kha Karaage was a decent appetizer- wish it was a little more crispy but flavor-wise, it was good! The broth was phenomenal! A little spicy but has that citrusy taste from the lemongrass/lime and a creamy flavor from the coconut milk. I was so excited to have leftovers for the following day because I thoroughly enjoyed the soup. I also appreciated how they added a good amount of chicken and didn't skimp out on the protein. The owner was very welcoming and helped me decide what I should order since I can be very indecisive. I wanted to get here as soon as they opened because I wanted to start my day with the drinks I saw on their menu. I arrived at 9:50am-ish but doors unlocked around 10:05am - not a big deal at all. I was just very anxious to try their drinks with my friend lol I felt bad because the gentleman running the cash register and making our drinks was the only person there so it took a minute to make everything. He apologized and gave us a lady finger with our order. I was just happy to try the place! I ordered the ube latte and the black sesame hojicha latte - both with 1/2 sugar and less ice and it was PERFECT. Not too sweet and flavors were on point. This place is amazing! It's officially on our list of go-to spots whenever we want a consistent, delicious, and comforting meal. A friend recommended it to us, and I'm so glad they did. One of my friends and I had a meet up at Azure, a Vietnamese restaurant located on North Lamar in a strip mall. I suggested this restaurant because it had 4.9 / 5.0 rating (67 reviews). This place has been on my list for awhile so glad I got to try it out. The menu is a unique blend of Vietnamese, Japanese and a little bit of Thai. We ordered two of the top dishes often mentioned in previous reviews, the creamy udon and tom kha pho. The creamy udon ($16.99) is pretty heavy. After a few bites it almost tastes too rich to eat. I think adding some pickled Japanese inspired veggies would help offset the creaminess. The tom kha pho ($16.99) tastes exactly how it sounds, savory with a hint of creamy coconut and citrus notes. But the chicken itself was pretty bland. I like the two dishes (pho and tom kha) separately but not sure if I like them together. Also ordered the crème brûlée latte (9/10) and the earl grey matcha latte (5/10). I wish the earl grey had a stronger presence. This place has good food, it's just hard to order vegan. The deep fried (agedashi style) tofu in the banh mi is very cool and unique. But it's meant to come with dipping miso that contains fish, yet it's labeled vegetarian. That's not vegetarian! The manager tried to convince me to order the agedashi tofu appetizer in fish broth, despite my veganism, because "it's really good". Azure is a great little cafe. It's north of 183 on Lamar. If I'm having a hard time deciding on a place to eat, Azure has come up as a possible default option. Their menu is pretty diverse. You go in, place your order on the kiosk, and then enter the table at which you'd like to sit at. They have cool neon signs hanging around on the walls. The bathroom down the hall past the curtains is clean. Once you place your order and sit down, they'll bring over bottled water to you. Your food will then come out after a bit. However, you'll have to grab your own plates, utensils, chopsticks, and napkins from the table. If you need to customize your order, talk with one of the staff members or the chef, and they'll let you know if they can accommodate. For example, noodle types can be swapped for certain dishes to establish a gluten-free version. Some of the dishes I've had before: Spring Rolls -- herbs, shrimp, vermicelli, cucumber, purple cabbage, and crunchy stick. I really like these spring rolls. Tom Kha -- savory broth, nice warm spiciness, plenty of yum. This has been reordered multiple times. Vermicelli Bowl -- assorted veggies, and pickled items, surrounding vermicelli, topped with a meat, eggroll Gyoza -- clearly deep fried so that all the skin puffs and is browned, but it works. I was expecting the grilled pork bahn mi to be the closest thing to a traditional bahn mi sandwich - mine didn't come with any pate. It was pretty basic and didn't seem worth the cost. The beef teriyaki plate was well prepared and came with a salad with a variety of flavors. Caution: price listed for this on the online website differs from the price on the kiosk. I got the fiery chicken bowl and the katsu udon. The fiery chicken bowl is a 10/10 BUT also very very spicy. They used cut up thai chilis or something because it's a heat that sneaks up quickly. It's also beautifully plated and put together. Katsu udon was solid, very great fry on the meat and the udon itself had some lemon zest which was a phenomenal ideal because it helped make the meal more interesting and decreased the flavor fatigue I usually get with katsu udon. Even looking at the menu beforehand, I was so excited to try Azure! Their food options looked really good, and their drinks looked even better! We got Miso soup - this was accidentally brought to our table and we drank it without realizing it didn't come with our entrees, but it was so good! But also disclaimer that it is on the sweeter side. The Earl grey flavor really shines through, and the matcha is more muted. But it pairs together so well. The broth was a really even blend of tom kha and pho, although I wish it was a little more acidic, whether that be through lemongrass or fish sauce. Creamy udon - This dish was also so good! I really appreciated it not being as salty as I expected just because it's already a heavier dish. The chicken katsu was so crispy, but the meat was still pretty tender. I do wish there was some type of sauce on the chicken. But they have a little sauce bar on the side so I just used that. I'm sure you can also just dip it into the creamy udon sauce, but I expected some type of tonkatsu sauce or something. Corn croffle - This might be my favorite of everything we tried today. The croffle part was kind of more dense than I expected, but I kind of liked it. The cream on top was so light, that it was nice to have something with more of a chew to it. And speaking of the cream, it was super light and wasn't overly sweet. It was a very subtle sweetness that really allowed the natural sweetness of the corn to shine through. And the corn flavor was so strong, but in a really good way. The prices aren't too bad, and the workers are so friendly. We actually got the croffle because they were taking some pictures for their menu. And they allowed us to sample it once they were done! A magical Vietnamese restaurant rises up from the ashes of a legendary Vietnamese restaurant. Yes, Virginia, reincarnation does exist. * * * Azure is located in an unassuming office strip mall on North Lamar near the Northern Bus Transfer point. Azure's next door neighbor sells printer toner cartridges. The other establishments on the strip are just as modest. Yet, Suite D33 in that mall is a blessed location. You have heard of restaurants being located in cursed locations. No matter who starts a restaurant in that location, it dies. Suite D33 is just the opposite. It seems to attract extraordinary Vietnamese restaurants that become Austin traditions. * * * The original suite D33 restaurant was Tam's Deli. It was operated by two sisters from Hanoi. For about thirty years, it was absolutely the best Vietnamese restaurant in the city. No one else came close. They were fearsome bakers who made the best bahn mi for miles around. They also made French-style baked goods such as cream puffs. The Vietnamese food and sandwiches were great. The desserts were to die for. Some of my happiest moments in my first years in Austin were eating Tam's Deli cream puffs. The sisters got old and decided to retire. They sold it to some newbie who didn't know what he was doing. He ran Tam's Deli into the ground. * * * Azure came and took over the location. Suite D33 is now back in the stratosphere selling Vietnamese food to die for. However, Azure is NOT Tam's Deli Two Sisters. They are not French bakers. They do not want to be French bakers. The Two Sisters served very traditional Vietnamese fare. Azure throws tradition out the window. They go "Nanny Nanny Boody Boody. We are going to do things our way. Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah." The Vietnamese Coffee has subtle undertones of peppermint. (You heard it here first: peppermint.) Their enoki soup is like no other Vietnamese soup in the city. (Pho in Austin and pretty much everywhere else is usually as standardized as pepperoni pizza.) It has a darker more baritone more full bodied broth that is nothing like the traditional pho stock you are used to. It is hearty, satisfying and wonderful. Their miso soup is much much lighter than the miso soups you get elsewhere in the city. My wife and I differ on the explanation of why this is so. My theory is that they use a lighter miso than most other Asian cooks use. My wife thinks there are large amounts of seaweed in the stock creating a counterbalancing taste. Either way, it is one of the most interesting miso soups in the city. If you look at the other Yelp reviews, you see an equal number of raves - generally about dishes different from the ones served here. Wow! Didn't expect much from this spot but I was so wrong. This used to be the old Tam Deli location off North Lamar. The food and drinks are really good! Everything we ordered was delicious. We started with the chicken karaage... perfectly seasoned and crispy, with an amazing dipping sauce. We also shared three plates: * Creamy udon with katsu chicken - Phenomenal! The sauce was rich and creamy with a hint of lemon zest that added a nice brightness. * Beef and chicken teriyaki plate - Both proteins were cooked to perfection: so tender and flavorful. Each plate also came with a side salad topped with ginger dressing, which instantly took me back to my early 20s when I worked at Benihana! Love that nostalgic touch. They also included roasted carrots and potatoes, a bit of an unexpected combo, but it totally worked with the proteins. I finished it off with a matcha latte, and it was so good! Definitely another go-to spot I'll be visiting again for both matcha and coffee! I'll be back again soon !! read more

So happy that this restaurant opened up! Went here on a weekend with a few friends and had such a hard time defending what to order since everything looked so good. Settled on the chicken Katsu, taro croffle, and a couple of iced coffees. The chicken Katsu was cooked to perfection and I loved the roasted vegetables that it came with. Portion was pretty big too which I always appreciate. Croffle was also the perfect sweet treat after the delicious meal. We also ordered the chicken karaage banh mi and the chicken was so crispy and flavorful. When you walk in, you do order on the tablet and they bring the food out to you. The space itself isn't super big but still fit 6 of us comfortably in the middle. Can't wait to try more of the menu! read more

For a casual sit down with tasty drinks and food without all the frills, Azure Cafe is hiiiiitttting! Arrive knowing what you want, as they are counter service - order, pay, and take a seat. Friendly and quick, this is a great spot for a quick meet up or when you're on the go. Their banh mi was fresh and delicious, with a softer bite with a fresh baguette that doesn't tear up the roof of your mouth. Missed having a bit more crust, but still hits the spot. Meat was very clean (no fat and gristle on the pork, very quality) and succulent, however I do feel they could give more for the price. It does come with a free miso soup - yum! Will definitely be back to try more of their bevvies and desserts. read more

When I first started seeing posts about Azure, I was super excited to try their bingsu (Korean shaved ice dessert) but I was a bit skeptical about the rest of their menu despite seeing positive reviews. The mains menu is mostly a mix of Vietnamese and Japanese with a little bit of Thai sprinkled in, and it just looked a bit scattered to me. I was worried it would be fusion done badly, but I was wrong! My friend and I ordered the creamy udon and the pho dip banh mi. The creamy udon has a really velvety sauce with a generous amount of shiitake mushrooms and such good umami. Perfectly cooked, bouncy udon noodles stood up to the richness of the sauce really well, and the noodles are topped by a generous portion of chicken katsu. Juicy chicken, very crispy breading. The pho dip banh mi surprised us too. The banh mi was flavorful enough on it's own, but with the dip? Magic. It had all the wonderful five spice and rich flavor of pho, but was more like a thick gravy than a regular pho broth consistency. We capped off our meal by ordering the blueberry taro bingsu. My friend was a bit disappointed that they used a powdered taro mix instead of actual taro, but I didn't mind that, especially since I'm not sure what regular taro would have done to the texture. As it was, we got perfectly fluffy taro ice, topped off with what tasted like homemade blueberry sauce, fresh blueberries, and a mix of mochi and crystal boba. It was delicious, and I really want to try their other flavors. The decor is fairly spartan, and there isn't a ton of seating available, but the food is fantastic, and the service was lovely and welcoming. Can't wait to go back! read more

I really enjoy their drinks, especially the tiramisu coffee and hazelnut latte. It leans toward the sweeter side, so if you have a sweet tooth like me, this place is definitely worth a visit. If you prefer less sugar, just ask them to dial it down! As for the food, I think there's room for improvement. The karaage wasn't as crispy as I hoped, the banh mi could use some pate, and the mayo was good. I also tried the egg and bacon banh mi, but it lacked enough flavor for my taste. I want to come back to try the pho dip banh mi. The staff are so so sweet here! Vibes are okay, very lowkey and chill spot. read more
