One of my friends and I had a meet up at Azure, a Vietnamese restaurant located on North Lamar in a strip mall. I suggested this restaurant because it had 4.9 / 5.0 rating (67 reviews). This charming Pan-Asian café is warm, welcoming and with quite a lot of personality. The menu captures unique tastes such ascreamy udon, crispy chicken karaage, pho dip banh mi, croffles, bingsu, and Vietnamese coffee. The atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back. Neon signs, cute décor, and a laid-back vibe with cats as its focal point bring this restaurant to life. The store manager and staff were super friendly and welcomed any questions regarding the menu. The vibe was familial. Also, the music playing in the background was quietly intoxicating. My friend ordered the Banh Xeo Tacos, which she enjoyed very much. The bonus was they were gluten-free. This place has been on my list for awhile so glad I got to try it out. The menu is a unique blend of Vietnamese, Japanese and a little bit of Thai. We ordered two of the top dishes often mentioned in previous reviews, the creamy udon and tom kha pho. The creamy udon ($16.99) is pretty heavy. After a few bites it almost tastes too rich to eat. I think adding some pickled Japanese inspired veggies would help offset the creaminess. The tom kha pho ($16.99) tastes exactly how it sounds, savory with a hint of creamy coconut and citrus notes. But the chicken itself was pretty bland. I like the two dishes (pho and tom kha) separately but not sure if I like them together. Also ordered the crème brûlée latte (9/10) and the earl grey matcha latte (5/10). I wish the earl grey had a stronger presence. Azure Cafe is such a hidden gem in Austin. It is a true local, family-owned small business, and that really shows in every part of the experience. Really good chicken katsu don. They did the egg, katsu, and onion rice just right. I also liked the pickled veggies a lot. Their miso soup was also really good (came with the katsu don). It has a nice onion aftertaste. Thai tea was perfect. I got half sweetness and it was one of the best Thai teas I've had in Austin. They also have Bingsu shaved ice there. First time I've tried it. The mango was good and the bobos / mochi with it were flavorful. They have big portions I was glad I got a medium size. Service was great. Their a/c was out so they offered 20% off for dine in which was nice and they gave me a free chilled bottle of water which was very thoughtful. They also got the food out very quickly. You go in, place your order on the kiosk, and then enter the table at which you'd like to sit at. They have cool neon signs hanging around on the walls. The bathroom down the hall past the curtains is clean. Once you place your order and sit down, they'll bring over bottled water to you. Your food will then come out after a bit. However, you'll have to grab your own plates, utensils, chopsticks, and napkins from the table. If you need to customize your order, talk with one of the staff members or the chef, and they'll let you know if they can accommodate. For example, noodle types can be swapped for certain dishes to establish a gluten-free version. Some of the dishes I've had before: Spring Rolls -- herbs, shrimp, vermicelli, cucumber, purple cabbage, and crunchy stick. I really like these spring rolls. Tom Kha -- savory broth, nice warm spiciness, plenty of yum. This has been reordered multiple times. Vermicelli Bowl -- assorted veggies, and pickled items, surrounding vermicelli, topped with a meat, eggroll Gyoza -- clearly deep fried so that all the skin puffs and is browned, but it works. I got the fiery chicken bowl and the katsu udon. The fiery chicken bowl is a 10/10 BUT also very very spicy. They used cut up thai chilis or something because it's a heat that sneaks up quickly. It's also beautifully plated and put together. Katsu udon was solid, very great fry on the meat and the udon itself had some lemon zest which was a phenomenal ideal because it helped make the meal more interesting and decreased the flavor fatigue I usually get with katsu udon. This is definitely a place I would return back to because I want to try their drinks and desserts. I also think the food is so good I would bring people from out of town here. I'm always amazed by Azure's creativity--they keep rolling out new items. I absolutely love their soft-shell crab with shrimp crackers. The shrimp crackers are crunchy, flavorful, and not greasy at all. The rice cracker bowl is stunning; I'm guessing they fry the same rice paper typically used for spring rolls. My husband ordered the Bánh Xèo, a Vietnamese-style taco-like dish. The crust contains wheat, so I didn't try it due to my gluten sensitivity, but I still enjoyed seeing how inventive the dish was. Speaking of gluten sensitivity, when Mike knows I'm avoiding gluten, he always adapts the recipes for me. I usually don't order items that clearly contain gluten, such as udon or bánh mì. Even looking at the menu beforehand, I was so excited to try Azure! Their food options looked really good, and their drinks looked even better! We got Miso soup - this was accidentally brought to our table and we drank it without realizing it didn't come with our entrees, but it was so good! The broth was simultaneously rich without being too heavy, and was a great appetizer. Earl grey matcha latte - I loved this drink! I finished the whole thing so quickly. But also disclaimer that it is on the sweeter side. The Earl grey flavor really shines through, and the matcha is more muted. But it pairs together so well. Tom kha pho - I love tom kha, so I was super excited to try this too. The broth was a really even blend of tom kha and pho, although I wish it was a little more acidic, whether that be through lemongrass or fish sauce. Creamy udon - This dish was also so good! I really appreciated it not being as salty as I expected just because it's already a heavier dish. The chicken katsu was so crispy, but the meat was still pretty tender. I do wish there was some type of sauce on the chicken. But they have a little sauce bar on the side so I just used that. I'm sure you can also just dip it into the creamy udon sauce, but I expected some type of tonkatsu sauce or something. Corn croffle - This might be my favorite of everything we tried today. The croffle part was kind of more dense than I expected, but I kind of liked it. The cream on top was so light, that it was nice to have something with more of a chew to it. And speaking of the cream, it was super light and wasn't overly sweet. It was a very subtle sweetness that really allowed the natural sweetness of the corn to shine through. And the corn flavor was so strong, but in a really good way. The prices aren't too bad, and the workers are so friendly. Yes, Virginia, reincarnation does exist. * * * Azure is located in an unassuming office strip mall on North Lamar near the Northern Bus Transfer point. Azure's next door neighbor sells printer toner cartridges. The other establishments on the strip are just as modest. Yet, Suite D33 in that mall is a blessed location. You have heard of restaurants being located in cursed locations. No matter who starts a restaurant in that location, it dies. Suite D33 is just the opposite. It seems to attract extraordinary Vietnamese restaurants that become Austin traditions. * * * The original suite D33 restaurant was Tam's Deli. It was operated by two sisters from Hanoi. For about thirty years, it was absolutely the best Vietnamese restaurant in the city. No one else came close. They were fearsome bakers who made the best bahn mi for miles around. They also made French-style baked goods such as cream puffs. The Vietnamese food and sandwiches were great. The desserts were to die for. Some of my happiest moments in my first years in Austin were eating Tam's Deli cream puffs. The sisters got old and decided to retire. They sold it to some newbie who didn't know what he was doing. He ran Tam's Deli into the ground. * * * Azure came and took over the location. Suite D33 is now back in the stratosphere selling Vietnamese food to die for. However, Azure is NOT Tam's Deli Two Sisters. They are not French bakers. They do not want to be French bakers. The Two Sisters served very traditional Vietnamese fare. Azure throws tradition out the window. They go "Nanny Nanny Boody Boody. We are going to do things our way. Nyah Nyah Nyah Nyah." The Vietnamese Coffee has subtle undertones of peppermint. (You heard it here first: peppermint.) Their enoki soup is like no other Vietnamese soup in the city. (Pho in Austin and pretty much everywhere else is usually as standardized as pepperoni pizza.) It has a darker more baritone more full bodied broth that is nothing like the traditional pho stock you are used to. It is hearty, satisfying and wonderful. Their miso soup is much much lighter than the miso soups you get elsewhere in the city. My wife and I differ on the explanation of why this is so. My theory is that they use a lighter miso than most other Asian cooks use. My wife thinks there are large amounts of seaweed in the stock creating a counterbalancing taste. Either way, it is one of the most interesting miso soups in the city. If you look at the other Yelp reviews, you see an equal number of raves - generally about dishes different from the ones served here. Wow! Didn't expect much from this spot but I was so wrong. This used to be the old Tam Deli location off North Lamar. The food and drinks are really good! Everything we ordered was delicious. We started with the chicken karaage... perfectly seasoned and crispy, with an amazing dipping sauce. We also shared three plates: * Creamy udon with katsu chicken - Phenomenal! The sauce was rich and creamy with a hint of lemon zest that added a nice brightness. * Beef and chicken teriyaki plate - Both proteins were cooked to perfection: so tender and flavorful. Each plate also came with a side salad topped with ginger dressing, which instantly took me back to my early 20s when I worked at Benihana! Love that nostalgic touch. So happy that this restaurant opened up! Went here on a weekend with a few friends and had such a hard time defending what to order since everything looked so good. Settled on the chicken Katsu, taro croffle, and a couple of iced coffees. The chicken Katsu was cooked to perfection and I loved the roasted vegetables that it came with. Portion was pretty big too which I always appreciate. Croffle was also the perfect sweet treat after the delicious meal. When I first started seeing posts about Azure, I was super excited to try their bingsu (Korean shaved ice dessert) but I was a bit skeptical about the rest of their menu despite seeing positive reviews. I was worried it would be fusion done badly, but I was wrong! My friend and I ordered the creamy udon and the pho dip banh mi. The creamy udon has a really velvety sauce with a generous amount of shiitake mushrooms and such good umami. Perfectly cooked, bouncy udon noodles stood up to the richness of the sauce really well, and the noodles are topped by a generous portion of chicken katsu. Juicy chicken, very crispy breading. The pho dip banh mi surprised us too. The banh mi was flavorful enough on it's own, but with the dip? Magic. It had all the wonderful five spice and rich flavor of pho, but was more like a thick gravy than a regular pho broth consistency. We capped off our meal by ordering the blueberry taro bingsu. My friend was a bit disappointed that they used a powdered taro mix instead of actual taro, but I didn't mind that, especially since I'm not sure what regular taro would have done to the texture. As it was, we got perfectly fluffy taro ice, topped off with what tasted like homemade blueberry sauce, fresh blueberries, and a mix of mochi and crystal boba. It was delicious, and I really want to try their other flavors. Friendly and quick, this is a great spot for a quick meet up or when you're on the go. Their banh mi was fresh and delicious, with a softer bite with a fresh baguette that doesn't tear up the roof of your mouth. Missed having a bit more crust, but still hits the spot. Stumbled upon this hidden gem (probably won't be for long) that serving up bold, creative flavors that blend Vietnamese, Japanese, and Thai cuisine in the most delicious way. From the first bite, you can tell the Chef here really know what they're doing. The food is consistently good--flavorful, balanced, and never overwhelming. There hasn't been a dish that my husband and I tried which we didn't like yet. Of all the dishes that we have tasted so far our top 3 standout dishes are: Chicken Karage, Banh Mi Pho Dip, and Fish Katsu Don. And don't sleep on the desserts! The croffle and bingsu are chef's kiss--light, not overly sweet, and the perfect way to end the meal. It's rare to find Asian desserts done this well outside of bigger cities, but Azure nails it. Last but not least, the drinks are quite bold and refreshing and we'll for sure order Ube Coffee and Hojicha Latte again. In short, if you're into Asian fusion or just looking to try something unique and satisfying, Azure is a must. It's the kind of place you almost don't want to share because you want to keep it all to yourself--but it deserves the spotlight. Blink and you'll pass by this place. It's hidden in an unassuming plaza in North Lamar and inside you'll find a variety of sweet drinks, treats, and Vietnamese food. My review is solely based on the drinks since that was the primary reason I came here. It is one of the only places in Austin that serves hojicha, so naturally, I had to get one. I also ordered a sea salt latte, which came with a little cookie. Unfortunately, both drinks were a miss for me. Both were too incredibly sweet. The roasted flavor of the hojicha was so overpowered by sugar, we couldn't even finish it. I had to dilute the sea salt latte to make it palatable for me. The service was great though and everyone was so nice. I would come back to try their food, but I would either skip the drinks or vastly lessen the amount of sweetness. read more

Absolutely adorable and delicious hidden gem! The service was amazing, the owners were so lovely and the food was all so delicious! The owner/chef Mike was such a pleasure, asked us for feedback and how we liked the food. Unfortunately I didn't get his wife's name, but she was also just as sweet. I recommend the biscoff croffle. The staff was very friendly and helpful, guiding me through the menu and selection process. Upon being seated, you're greeted with a bottle of water, though service beyond that is mostly self-serve. The coffee was exactly what I expected, rich and more dessert-like than traditional coffee. Depending on your order, you may receive a miso soup (all rice dishes include one). Interestingly, the miso soup stood out as my favorite part of the meal. While the chicken katsu curry was solid, it didn't particularly stand out compared to similar dishes elsewhere. Came for the creamy udon--and wow, I've honestly never had anything like it before. Rich, comforting, and unforgettable. The ambience is incredibly homey and welcoming, the kind of place that makes you want to linger a little longer. And the desserts... absolutely amazing. The mango bingsu was pure magic--it felt like eating a snowflake. One bite instantly took me back to being a kid, standing outside trying to catch snowflakes on my tongue as they melt in your mouth. Light, delicate, and nostalgic in the best way. The croffle was exceptional--crispy, caramel and whip cream, and perfectly done. To top it all off, the owners were incredibly kind and friendly, which made the entire experience even better. You can truly feel the love and care they put into this place. Hole in the wall with excellent food!! Its kinda expensive but there were lots of things i wanted to try but literally just didnt have enough people to eat it. The dipping banh mi was good and so was a chicken dish we ate. Ill be back for sure. read more

Love the Enoki mushroom banh mi!! While pricey, the bread is perfect and the ingredients fresh! Hojicha tea amazing. My wife love the pho tom kha. The strawberry croffle is amazing. The bingsu are also very very good. We will be coming back often! read more
