Went here yesterday with a friend for late lunch at 2 pm and sat down at a high top. Not busy at all, being off-time. Not a person came to greet us. No sweat, more of a laid back atmosphere and I'm pretty chill. We ordered off the QR code and started talking. 40 minutes later our food hasn't arrived, and still no one had come to our table. Mind you, we were right next to the bar. I hailed someone down and asked about the food. They went to check and said their POS system was down. Probably something you should either 1) know and let people know 2) find out seeing no orders coming with people there 3) or find out the quick and personable way by saying hello or checking on people at your table. After they realized this, they didn't really seem to care, but gave us a free queso for our wasted time. Food is decent for the price, but don't expect decent service. read more

Came here last night for the first time! Here's what we ordered: Crab Rangoons (5 out of 10)- You get 5 small rangoons for $10. I know i have been ruined by cheap chinese places that fill theirs with cream cheese, but I don't think there was any cream cheese in these at all (which is specified on menu). The big place they lost points was how overly salted and peppered the outside was, as well as the fact there was something kinda of peppery and spicy inside that didn't add flavor, just burned my mouth. Bring the cream cheese! Burger with fried rice side (6/10)- the burger was good! Not the most earth shattering but not a ton of notes either. Would order again. The fried rice was not our favorite- while cooked well it had a strong seaweed or fish oil taste that was pretty dominating. Queso (7/10) - This was my favorite of the night. A good helping of really melty, gooey cheese with crispy wonton chips and also raw broccoli, which I appreciated. I do wish there had been more of the black garlic flavor which I didnt taste it at all, or chili oil, and less salt. Mapo Tofu (3/10) - This dish was fried tofu and ground beef in a sicy szechuan sauce, with white rice that was cooked with beef fat and pickled something. First off- it did not look appetizing. It was a big plate of brown that looked like dog food, and the texture was exactly how I would expect dog food to me. The layer of the dish was so weird- the beef fast for the rice was just pooled at the bottom, then you had a pile of the fried tofu with the dog food mixture on top. Which did not taste good. I just ended up eating the top of the white rice and the pieces of fried tofu. I usually love a good pickled element, but this was temperature hot and so it lost a lot of that acid bite that cold pickled veggies bring to a rich dish to cut through. It was a hard pass for me- texture wise, elements wise, and also just tasted like nothing except a burning pepper heat. Overall, all the food had a major salt problem and tasted very one note- everything just of reeked of black pepper and just generally made my mouth a little burny. Plus, the portions absolutely do not match the price point. read more

Tucked inside the Golden Hour bar, this restaurant is a total hidden gem. As a fellow Asian, I was surprised at the quality of Asian food the restaurant is churning out and must say very impressed. Also as a vegetarian, I absolutely loved the plethora of vegetarian options available to me. First off the atmosphere is so great. I love the bar vibes and interior - it is cozy and slightly more upscale than a dive bar with comfy chairs. They have a pool table and dim lighting but not too dark where I need a flashlight to see what I am eating. We came on a Wednesday night and it wasn't too crowded and we were able to find a table for 6. You just find a table, sit down and order via QR code and someone brings you the food. The dishes I got included yellow Ranger fries which were really sliced potatoes that were perfectly crispy served with aioli and chili crisp and was absolutely delicious. I also got the Dan Dan noodles with tofu which was a good size portion - the tofu was perfectly crisp and the noodles were Al dente and the sauce was pretty good though I wish it had just a little more sesame paste. As a table we shared the black garlic queso and oh my gosh was that delicious I was worried the black garlic may overpower the queso, but it didn't and added a nice umami punch without making it overly salty. Drinks wise that's where the bar comes in and they do have a water station. Parking is free with lot attached and it is small so there was plenty of street parking as well. Also the reviewers rating the place lower because of QR code menu is very strange to me as since COVID I feel most restaurants have shifted to using QR codes to browse menus and order. We came in as a group of 6 and we all found it much easier to order via QR code and individually pay for our own food. Not sure why others had issues with it. This really should be a joint review for both the food and the bar, but what a lovely place. They nailed the whole upscale dive bar thing and the food ordering is handled really nicely with all of the food being pictured on your phone when you scan the QR code. I ordered the queso they are well known for and it was outstanding, can't wait to try more things next time. The only flub was I ran out of broccoli and wanted to order more, but apparently you can only do it when you first order the queso, so I recommend going ahead and doing that because the portion is generous and you'll want more veggies for dipping. read more

A friend took us here Saturday night and wow, I'm sad I'd never been. Good vibes, cheap drinks (especially for in Austin, and pretty good food as well. I had a few $3 cream ales and also tried my fiance's iron whip and everything was pretty solid. For food, we split a few things between 3 people: queso, burger, and I think the 3rd thing was the Signature Taiwanese Fried Chicken in garlic sauce with crispy Thai basil. I liked the umami touch on the queso and was surprised at how good it was. The burger and chicken were both great and the service was relatively fast too. I think this fits the bill; dark, chill, good place to hang out and watch sports or chat with friends, cozy seats, and affordable drinks, with a nice menu of Asian-fusion eats. Big props for offering so many automatically vegan dishes and more with options to serve them as such, as is the case with the popcorn tofu for example, swapping out Kewpie mayo for mae ploy. My favorite thing was the green beans, which come with crispy rice and almonds on top for a really satisfying crunch. The sauce was a bit sweet, but balanced with umami, fresh basil and mint, and a salty finish What I don't love is the QR code menu and online-only ordering, which can be awkward with a group and a bummer if you wanted to pay cash. I think I won the prize Sunday. Needing a Ramen Del Bario fix, I found out they had a couple of dishes cooking up at a place called the Yellow Ranger, which is inside of a place called the Golden Horn. It was like following a treasure map. A long time Austinite, there was a place called BurgerTex on Airport, with a bar upstairs called Barflys, which is still there. OMG, it was glorious. Golden Horn is the bar and Yellow Ranger is the restaurant. Staff were so friendly, the bartender must have been having a bad day, very deadpan. The food was out of this world. We started with appetizers and should have stopped there. The garlic queso was hands down delicious, the shishito peppers were huge and delicious. We also got a humus dish with fresh veggies, but I forgot the name. It was outstanding.. I have never been so full. We went on to order Lo-mein, Fried rice, and Yakamein. The Yakamein, was a bit different than my New Orleans love, but quite good. Before I call this quits, I must compliment the interior, so well done, so inviting and down right cool. For this Shana is taking the lead: I visited Yellow Ranger on 2/28/2025. It was the day of the nationwide economic blackout to protest the unraveling of American democracy and El*n M*sk's grand theft of the federal government. But spending money at local establishments was allowed, so I felt okay about my planned outing. I'd wanted to try this place for months and I hadn't had a true day off work in forever. But more than anything, I really, really, on a deep emotional level, needed quality queso. Yellow Ranger came through, y'all. On EVERY level. I brought a book: James Patterson's Cat & Mouse. It's the 4th installment in the Alex Cross series. It was first published in the mid 90s, a simpler time on a lot of levels. (I like Alex Cross as a protagonist. I wish he was POTUS.) I looked forward to having a great cocktail and some higher-end dive bar fare as an accompaniment to my light reading. I looked forward to tuning out the world. Tuning out the world would prove to be impossible despite the super chill ambiance: low lighting, intimate seating, soft French pop playing through the speakers. As it happened, while I enjoyed my first cocktail (Frozen Iron Whip) and the SUPERB Black Garlic Queso, the unfortunately-real-POTUS-Tr*ump was berating Ukraine's president in the Oval Office and subsequently dismantling the ENTIRE post-WWII world order. Thank ALL the gods I had the black garlic queso to comfort me. I quickly finished my cocktail and ordered another: the King's Cold Brew. That was even better than the Frozen Iron Whip! And I ordered another appetizer: the Smashed Cucumber Salad. OMG that will warm your anxious heart! Thank god for local places like Yellow Ranger. Support your local eateries. Hug your loved ones. We're always really nervous going back to a place that we loved the first time around, terrified that it will never live back up to the initial feeling of being so smitten. Well, after coming back to Yellow Ranger with a cousin in tow last week, we are completely in love EVEN THOUGH they still have the QR thing going. (Yes, we appreciated reading the thorough response from management after our initial review, thank you! Still, those things suck, but let's agree to disagree.) Everything about this establishment is almost sheer perfection. First of all, the volume level was still normal, praise be. You look around and people are pleasantly chatting without getting into screaming match conversations. How novel! The vibe is still spot-on with a combo young-old hipster crowd and regulars and normies like us. It is just such a pleasant place to be in. We ordered a ton of food to share, and loved nearly everything. The pork rolls were crispy and fun, the green beans are still spicy perfection, and the burger still remains in our Austin top 5. We loved the popcorn tofu, but weren't the biggest fans of the orange cauliflower--a *slightly* bit too mushy. The lo mein was a hit with everyone at the table. Every sauce was stellar and we appreciated the salt factor. Never change!! One minor complaint: when one of us ordered the iron whip, which already comes in a relatively small glass, it was not topped/domed, so it was essentially a glorified shot. Since this is more of a Golden Horn issue than a Yellow Ranger one, we're not going to hold it against them. We also want to shout out the preternaturally kind chef who was running the food and making the rounds at tables. He even came out to find us in the parking lot to give our kiddo a sticker, restoring our faith in the good of humanity. Thank you! Absolutely incredible bar food with an American/Chinese twist. It's bar food because it's served in a bar but it's far from the typical fare you'd expect. The offerings are on par with dishes at much higher end restaurants. The chef and staff get it right. They're located inside The Golden Horn which is a plus. When menu items are this good it can sometimes be difficult to articulate with words that are deserving of the experience. They have things like queso dip, egg rolls, wok green beans, loaded fries, and crab rangoon. Burgers, lo mein, hot chicken sammie, kimchi dog, to name a few more. I'm not even covering all the options. If you're going for the first time the Yellow Plate Special is solid choice. It comes with soup, rice, eggroll, and an entree (half portion). You get three entrees to choose from. I like that special a lot. I'm a big fan of the Chinese Chicken Salad. The chicken for the salad is marinated perfectly (served cold so all those flavors soaked into the meat really hit your mouth). I'm getting hungry for their food just typing this review. read more

When I saw they were participating in restaurant week, I got pretty excited because I didn't know about this spot and figured they must be something special. Although they do decent bar food, that's pretty much where it ends. And so the three-star review is because they bill themselves as something much more on their website. I love that they're very unapologetic and say some people like our food and some people don't, right on their website. However, I think when you've got that kind of attitude you need to back it up with some damn good food. So when I was eating the food, what had been written on their website suddenly felt less bold and more like pre-couching that their food was just going to be okay. I was wanting to love it or hate it given what they wrote, unfortunately it was just meh. The food is also a pricey, although they get huge points for being inside a great bar called the Golden Horn which has great decor and ambience. Parking can be a little tough on a busy night, so you'll have to roll over and park somewhere in the street as they don't have a very big lot. read more

This place is amazing. It's kind of classic Chinese-American food but done with it's own distinct personality that makes it it's own special thing. So far the things I've had the pleasure of trying here are the loaded fries, General Tso's chicken, Taiwanese chicken, and chicken cracklin's (yes that's a lot of chicken). The fries are cottage fries, which are some of my favorite style fries (and hard to find!) covered in their awesome house made chili crisp and aioli. Crispy and hot, super satisfying with a nice beer or cocktail...which is perfect since they are located inside the Golden Horn, which is a fantastic bar! General Tso's may be the best version of the dish that I've had. Super fresh, hot, the sauce is savory and delicious. Perfect with a side of rice. Taiwanese chicken is just as delicious, coming with a great garlic sauce and is super crushable. Chicken crackin's are self-explanatory. Crispy chicken skin, how can you go wrong? This is a hidden gem but it shouldn't be. It being inside a great bar makes it a perfect place for some delicious food and drinks. And the best part? It's run by a freakin awesome team of human beings. Ignore all the troll reviews of this place. This is legit excellent stuff. Came here to treat myself to a meal made with love based on a chef's recommendation and I felt it the moment I walked through the door. Neil was lovely and provided warm energy and kindness. Ordered the smash burger with cucumbers as a side and the lo mein with roast pork. Burger was exceptionally crispy with a thick and juicy center. I think there was a sort of horseradish mayo? Which was delightful. The cucumbers were refreshing and I can't wait to try to copycat them at home. Lo mein was silky and the pork melted in my mouth. Yellow Ranger, named after Trini the original Yellow Power Ranger who was Asian (RIP to actress Thuy Trang), serves a menu of Americanized Chinese bar food out of the very fun bar, Golden Horn. If you're dining in, you can order from QR codes at tables and food will be delivered to you. Our group of five were able to try most of their menu. HIGHLIGHTS: - Green Beans - extremely flavorful and packed with umami, the favorite dish we tried. - Crab Rangoons - fried very well, the filling was flavorful and delicious. Flavor-wise probably one of the best crab rangoons I've had but my one critique is that they do not put a lot of filling in. I would rather pay more to have more filling. SOLID: - Loaded Fries - the fries come as maybe 1-2mm potato slices that are crisp on the outside but still have a nice chew on the inside. The lime aioli brightens it up, and make these addicting to eat. - Taiwanese Fried Chicken - I love TFC, I grew up ordering it as Boba places so I have a very specific vision of what it should taste like, unless you can improve or do something new with it. Unfortunately here did a more subpar version that was decent but just a bit dry and not as flavorful (I'm used to MSG and spicy powder shaken over them). I subbed egg fried rice with this dish though and that was tasty. OKAY: - Egg Rolls (pork) - packed full of meat but nothing that stands out from any other egg roll you can get. - Orange Cauliflower - the cauliflower wasn't that crisp and more soggy from the sauce, which tasted more lemon than orange. - Burger Tex - a nice homage to the business that used to be in the space. I haven't tried the original Burger Tex burger but this smash burger was quite dry and most of what I could taste was a charred flavor and not much from the scallions or mustard aioli. We also heard that they weren't happy with the scallion pancake so they have temporarily taken it off the menu until they are satisfied. My spouse loves that spicy chicken. Only suggestion: would love to see info on what can be gluten friendly because there are so many cool things to try! The fried rice is definitely a must. The fries are more like chips. They are crispy and delicious. The Taiwanese Fried chicken is a fan favorite. The crab ragoon is a little different with bay seasoning. The burger is a smash burger never went to Burger Tex when it was around so I have no reference point; it was a decent bar burger but probably wouldn't order it again there are so many other items to try here. They are now open daily and they have specials too - they were running a bread pudding special the last I was there. There is also a service charge that is added so no tip screen. They do go around the tables to deliver the food and check on you from time to time. As well as bus the tables. Parking can get a little tight when barfly's is open. read more

All of it was SO delicious, that me and my husband brought back our friends and clients several times in the weeks following their opening. Modern yet still very vintage dive bar atmosphere, amazing Chinese-American food concept, combined with KILLER crafted cocktails? What more could you need?! Crab Rangoon needs to be on your order! The shrimp fried rice, the Chinese Chicken Salad, the Burger Tex, and the Wok Green Beans are to die for. Every time I go, the Lo Mein is sold OUT! Which is a GOOD thing! Ordered "crab" rangoon and the orange cauliflower and after a "employee wellness" fee got smacked by the Green Ranger themselves with a $30 bill. Food didn't come out yet, so I wasn't upset because maybe this was going to be some bomb ass food. NOPE. I got some sorry ass crab rangoons (5 count) and a pathetic basket of rice and lukewarm warm soggy cauliflower tossed in sauce. A cup of rice and 1/16 of a head of cauliflower is $14! You really pulled a MEGAZORD and up charged my civilian a$$ 600%. Golden horn bar was cool. Yellow Ranger isn't for me. read more

Vaguely remember when this place used to be Burger Tex and it's such an upgrade from what it used to be. The ambiance was dark and moody and it would be a great option for a casual date. You can order your food through a QR code, but you need to scan a different QR code for drinks and that one does not allow for online ordering. Walked up to the bar to order soft drinks. Later went back for a refill and was told I needed to purchase another soft drink which was weird since it's just tap soda from the bar. Food was good, especially the Taiwanese chicken. The fried rice was tasty, but didn't need the creamy sauce on top. An XO sauce would have been a better pairing or just skip the sauce altogether. The crab rangoons were crunchy goodness and the sweet dipping sauce balanced out the flavors. The order in which the food was brought to the table made no sense as we got the fried chicken with rice first, 10 minutes later the fried rice and once we were almost done we everything, we got the rangoons which should have been a starter. They opened about a week ago so they might still be ironing out details, so I will check them out again in a few months. read more

I love the concept of unique Asian late night food, at a bar that is becoming one of our favorites in North Central Austin. There's a really dearth of late night food outside of tacos and burgers, so I was pretty stoked to try them. The kimchi and mapo tofu dogs were both delicious. My only issue is that in the end it was kinda pricey for two pretty small dogs. $30 including wellness fee. Overpriced and not even tasty. I went in on a Saturday afternoon looking for a late lunch with a beer. I had seen this place pop up while looking at restaurants while having a flight of beer at Lazarus a few weeks before and thought that the concept of Americanized Chinese bar food sounded cool so I remembered the name and went to checked it out. The building is older but inside looked and felt nice. You order your food and and alcohol at different ends of the bar and there is a 20% wellness charge because you the owner's cant pay a livable wage. I ordered the Taiwanese fried chicken, it was $20+ after the we don't adequately pay our workers charge plus another $7 + tip for a beer. I sat at a small, round, table close to a large projector maybe TV that was playing soccer. The food arrived and I dug in. It was beyond MID! It was overly oily but not crunchy, whatever they used to spice it the chicken was not evenly distributed, the chicken pieces were not evenly shaped. Easily the WORST Taiwanese fired chicken I've had in my life. If you are going here for the food, save you time, money, and be kind to your taste buds and avoid this place. CHIIIIIICCCKKEN!!!!11!!! I cannot get the Taiwanese chicken out of my head. I'm not even a big chicken eater. Since they're owned by the same people as Barfly's, I figured I could grab some food to go and bring it over to the patio.
