Although Bun Belly did not, in fact, go all vegan overnight as the clumsily worded announcement made it seem, they did launch a separate plant-based menu to enhance their existing meatless offerings. I'm all for that and fully support the effort, especially when the results are so promising. If you get one thing, make it the eggplant bao. As one would expect when there's "bun" right in the name, these soft, pillowy morsels are downright majestic, each one with a thick, buttery slab of fried eggplant set in the plush center. The texture is downright velvety once you break through the crisp, lightly battered crust. The banh xeo is another standout, stuffed to bursting with bean sprouts, onion, and fried tofu. Though not my all-time favorite in the city, unarguably a strong contender. We were also treated to free taro tapioca for this initial launch, which too me by surprise, in a good way. I never would have ordered it, but now I know I would have missed out. Served warm, it's still light, yet rich, with notes of nutty vanilla throughout. It's located in the plaza with the 99 Ranch at the corner of Airport and Lamar. The decor inside with really nice. The bar looks nifty, and the displays on the wall are aesthetically pleasing. The tables and chairs have a warm, soft, wooden look and feel. Service is friendly enough, but it can be slow. Saigon Curry Noodles -- Shredded Chicken, Shrimp, Coconut Broth, Onions, Basil, Lime, Scallions, Rice Noodles. Actually, the shredded chicken in here is pretty nice. Pad Thai Chicken -- you're better off ordering pad thai from a legitimate Thai restaurant. I've been partial to their vermicelli bowls, ordering them if I come here. I've had their Grilled Pork and Spicy Beef Lemongrass with an added eggroll --- not really something to write home about. They use mixed greens, but sometimes those greens aren't picked out well---you might get a few of those slightly decaying ones mixed in if you don't look carefully. Add slices of cucumber and radish, a lack of bean sprouts, the fish sauce, and vermicelli, and you've got the bún belly base bowl. Beverage wise I've tried their Matcha Latte and Summer Breeze (Hibiscus Mint, Lime, Peach). They're good enough to hydrate with, though the Matcha Latte has an interesting presentation. I view eating here more as a back-up, quick option if in the area needing a quick bite to eat---really, just the convenience factor. It's not really a place that I think of when recommending places to others for having stellar food; it's not in my weekly rotation, nor is it on the special occasion list. Visited with my family in Austin, and we managed to try an assortment of different items. Our order was the shrimp pho, Shaken Beef, Crispy Pork Belly, and beef pho (unpictured). The food took a while to be made and served, but the staff was very kind and accommodating. The Shrimp Pho had a tasty aromatic broth and was not oily. The noodle was soft and chewy, and came with a platter of vegetables, jalapeños, and limes. The shrimps were also very fresh, which my sister appreciated. However, the Shaken beef was too salty. Everything from the rice and even the salad was overly salted, and was a little unbearable to eat. Maybe a little sweetness to the sauce could've added more complexity to the beef, and the dish's flavor overall. This wasn't the case for the Crispy Pork Belly: it was well-balanced in flavor and the meat was not too fat or too lean. The pork skin was crispy, and even came with vermicelli and a nice side of vegetables. I personally liked wrapping the pork with the greens, before dipping it in the fish sauce and eating. One of the better items on the menu. Last but not least, I enjoyed the beef pho. Everything from noodle texture to portion size was just right, but the broth was just too oily for me to finish -- which is a pity, as pho broth usually takes hours to prepare and make. This would have been my favorite item otherwise, because the flavor was really good. All this is to say: Bun Belly is a very solid pick for people who want pho, but there is definitely room for improvement on many fronts. This was my first time going back to Bun Belly since they moved to this new location on Airport and oh jeez -- parking is a doozy! This strip center always has parking challenges, especially if it's a weekend. If you are doing a to-go order (like I was), you may want to consider two people driving there so one person can easily hop out. Otherwise, if you're by yourself, you can expect to park very, VERY far away. I wish they had a reserved spot out front for to-go cars only, like how other places do. As for the food, it was basically how I remembered it, except my cucumbers and some of the leafy greens were wilted and soggy/mushy, which wasn't great. The portions were okay. The absolute worst! Not worth the price paid. The owner does not care about making things right. The poor server on the phone even acknowledged this fact. I placed an order for take away. When I picked up the order, it was 10 minutes late. Then, they said they could not fulfill part of the order while I was there to pick it up. They offered a cash refund. Then, after getting home, I discovered another part of the order was missing. When I called, the owner left the phone on the counter and walked away for 10 minutes and refused to make it right. I had to call back to speak to another person. I paid for a meal and didn't receive the meal I paid for: pork vermicelli with an egg roll and beef pho with meatballs. No egg roll, no meat balls. Took ~5 minutes to just be seated, ~10 to be brought water etc. There was just one old man and one middle aged lady seating, waitressing, and bussing for all the tables. The (lack of) speed wasn't that frustrating for me personally because 1) I wasn't not in a rush of any kind 2) all the customer could see them working hard, so it wasn't like they were just sitting on their phones ignoring diners. I can't believe it's my first time trying this place since I've passed it so many times before. I got the Vietnamese Crepe with my choice of protein, pork. It comes with lots of greens including mint leaves, lettuce, and cilantro. I love the coconut flavoring and the choy sum(?) inside the crepe. The fish oil sauce is great. The presentation of the chicken Hoi An was beautiful! But I wish it tasted as good as it looked. Unfortunately, the chicken had no business being saltier than my personality (lol) all jokes aside, it was too salty to eat. Also a bit dry. The garlic rice did not have much garlic flavor and tasted a bit "waxy." I did like the turmeric fish spring rolls but did not like the peanut sauce. It tasted like peanut butter out of a jar that has been warmed up. Definitely ask for fish sauce instead. Service was decent, waiter was nice. My friend and I came here for lunch this past weekend because we were craving some Vietnamese cuisine and had never been here before! I liked the fact that the menu was simple (sometimes too many choices can be overwhelming for someone so indecisive like me haha), and the prices were relatively reasonable. The shrimp rolls were wrapped nicely and cut into smaller, shareable pieces and I enjoyed their complimentary, homemade peanut sauce. As for the pho, I will say that the broth flavor was tasty and they were generous with their tender beef slices (I added a few more dollars for meatballs). That being said, I had finished the noodles before all the meat was consumed, so I wish there were more noodles for the price I paid ($14 for the bowl). The place has a cute "small restaurant" vibe and I enjoyed the Asian-themed decor throughout the walls. wow. bun belly is a hidden gem here in Austin. they are located in North Austin near all the other Asian restaurants like Kura and Daiso. I tried the curry soup with shrimp and the pho with beef. Service was pretty fast. The curry soup was out of this world. It is very flavorful, rich, and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. the pho was very light and the beef was nice and juicy. The soups came with a side of Sriracha, which I definitely took advantage of. The actual portion of the meal was huge so I ended up having leftovers. Their menu is kind of limited but I like that because you try their best dishes. Today I ate something that made my heart happy. I stopped by Bun Belly because I was in the mood for a Bao Bun. I had a to-go order and just expected average food. What I got was much more. Let's get to the good part, here's what I had. Pork belly Bao bun- damn this was good! The pork belly has a sweet sauce and Bao was fresh and tasty. It was so good I forgot to take a pic!
