Overall: 3.7/5 [takeout] We ordered online for takeout around lunchtime. There was no line, and the food was ready when we arrived so pickup was seamless. Signature Lemongrass Pork Bowl ($17): The bowl was pretty small for the price, but it tasted authentic. I liked the egg quiche, the use of actual broken rice, and the nuoc mam. The lemongrass pork, however, was not as good as the BBQ pork. It was a bit dry, and the lemongrass flavor did not really come through. "Broken" Tater Tots ($9): Tots with scallion oil, house-pickled daikon and carrots, topped with Saigon mayo and signature BBQ sauce. We chose BBQ pork as our protein. This was delicious and far better than the rice bowl. The tater tots were still crispy enough by the time we got home, so we did not need to air fry them again. Side of Grilled Meat ($5): We asked for the smoky ginger chicken so we could try all of the meats. My friend and I came here on a whim, looking for Vietnamese food nearby. Chef Bao was very welcoming, energetic, and friendly. He gave us recommendations on what to get, and we got the Saigon BBQ pork and the Lemongrass pork. I'll only speak for the Saigon BBQ but my friend said the Lemongrass pork was very good. The fusion of pickled vegetables and sauce provides a sour, puckering, mouth-watering sensation. Combine that with the juicy bbq pork and fresh cucumbers and you have quite the flavor platter mixing on your palate. Would certainly recommend a try, and I'll be back when time permits. read more

Broken Rice is the Vietnamese protein bowl you didn't know you needed. The business centers around three signature bowls--Lemongrass Pork, Smoky Ginger Chicken, and Saigon Street BBQ Pork--each served over your choice of either white rice or vermicelli. You'll also find a small but thoughtful lineup of appetizers like Loaded Broken Tater Tots and Egg Rolls, vegan options including a Tofu Vermicelli Bowl and Vegetarian Egg Rolls, plus a few desserts. I've tried all three, but my favorite hands down is the Saigon Street BBQ Pork. In my opinion, It has the most flavor. Each bowl comes with an egg quiche (cha trung), pickled veggies, fresh cucumbers, scallion oil, crispy cracklings, and fish sauce. The food is authentically Vietnamese, with no fusion or changes made to cater to the Austin palate and that really drives it home for me. I grew up in Houston, where anytime you ordered a Broken Rice Bowl (Com Tam), it came with Shredded Pork Skin (Bì) and an Egg Quiche/Meatloaf (Cha Trung). I'm good on never having Bì for the rest of my life, but it was really the Cha Trung I've been missing since moving to Austin. Owner, founder, and chef, Bao, makes everything from scratch and you'll often find him around the truck grilling the meats himself. He's super friendly and down to earth. I stopped by to meet Chef Bao. I had read about his Food Trailer and the "Saigon Street Food" menu caught my attention right away. Chef Bao gave me a brief history about himself and his new venture. Found out he was the lead chef at Lucky Robot, which is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. So never having heard about Saigon Street Food, I didn't know what to order. Chef Bao suggested the lemon grass pork on broken rice which came with a slice of Vietnamese Quiche. The first bite and I could taste that cherrywood smokiness. So flavorful and filling. I couldn't finish it all so had to take some home. I could go eons on how great this meal was. 11/10 My friend and I stopped by for a small snack and were NOT disappointed. I ordered the Broken Tots bowl with BBQ pork and experienced full ego-death. That was the best tots bowl I've ever had. I was craving Vietnamese food when I was in east Austin and stumbled upon this really tasty food truck. I got the vermicelli bowl with chicken and it was so fresh, the sauce that it came with was perfect sweet/salty/savory and the toppings were unique and flavorful including this crunchy- chicharron like topping that was just the right touch and the the fresh herbs. The service was also fast and friendly and there is a covered table area to eat that feels open and airy with a view of a busy street so you can people watch while you eat. We had the Puddin': cream cheese icing, vanilla pudding, fresh bananas with nilla wafers. According to the menu. Ours didn't have any nilla wafers and the presentation was uneven, hence the four stars. I didn't miss the wafers. The icing and pudding were one goopy topping and the bananas slices were half scattered slices and half banana chunk that I had to separate. Side notes: Gourdough sits on a corner with parking spots that are not free. There's a pay via QR code so you'll need a phone or something to scan that. Boo for digital shackles. Next note- I feel like this is a low key meet up spot. Like the way they tried to make the first train cars on the MTA the singles car? There was a series of singles getting doughnuts and they were a little done up for the occasion. Who knows. With the little IG ready love seats and doughnuts made for sharing, you could walk away with extra sugar.

We were seated after a three-minute break, and I ordered the Joe Lioni. The chicken was very dense, and it pulled apart with barely any force. It was the texture that all chicken strives to be. The flavor was a three-way gradient: Strong lemon; to soft, heavy chicken, to a slow-building spiciness that faded quickly and painlessly. I was finished with the first piece, and about to move on to the second, but my father and sister suggested that I eat some of the spaghetti. The taste and texture can only be described as the feeling on a hike, when you come into a clearing with the sun gently filtering through the trees, and you know and enjoy that there is more to come. Very subtle and light. The pasta and chicken paired more perfectly than anything I have ever eaten before. After I finished, I got the stracciatelli cannoli, that is, the chocolate chip cannoli. I was given the cannoli, as well as a surprise bonus: the Brown Butter gelato. It was amazing. It's the next step up from custard. The cannoli was crispy, brittle, and the ricotta was smooth and rich Scraping my plate on all of these. Like a dream. Prices were somewhat steep, but worth it. 10/10

Sammie's has been hyped up on social media for a long time and I gotta say it's still underrated! I will gladly have Sammie's take the Pepsi challenge against red sauce joints in NYC/NJ etc. In fact, I've told friends and family that I am going to take them to Sammie's when they visit from there. We just had such a fantastic experience - everything..the vibe..the red light fixtures and the color of the booths and the floor..the service - our server was great..loved their outfits..really had an old school little italy feel to it. The food was much better than I even anticipated - as a guy who grew up on NJ diner mozzarella sticks, I have a high bar for them and these were magnificent. And seriously...taking the "everything's bigger in Texas" slogan and applying them to mozzarella sticks?! top 10 achievements of the decade. The chicken parm was perfect - well seasoned, proper amount of crisp..the basil on top...the perfect browning of the cheese. Also the lasanga was excellent..and best part - the leftovers..took it home and the next two days put them in a small cast iron and re-heated them..and the magic was right there in my hill country kitchen! Lastly and certainly not least - the cannoli...just look at the photo below.. I'll say, yes, the place is pricey but you can really easily split these entrees and then it becomes cheaper than a jersey strip center Italian joint. I haven't stopped raving about Sammie's since I've been there, and I cannot wait to return, recommend it, and take friends and family that visit.

So when I found out they opened a brick-and-mortar location, I knew I had to come back. I re-ordered their Killer Noodles and loved how they kept that fun food truck feel in the presentation. It felt playful, quirky, and true to their roots. Their soft shell crab curry dish was also really impressive. It was a bit too spicy for me, but the flavors were bold, layered, and explosive in the best way. Based on what we tried, I have no doubt the rest of their menu is just as delicious. We ordered oysters including 4 that were dressed--very fresh, tasty and I'd return for the oyster happy hour which is Monday to Friday from 3pm-5pm (they are a bit pricey) The star of the show was the octopus--I've had octopus across the US and globe and honestly one of the best I have had, so glad we ordered in.
