Dong Nai is the spot! A hidden gem in Austin, serving delicious and authentic Vietnamese food. I discovered this establishment on New Year's Day, when my usual go-to Vietnamese restaurants were closed. And I'm so glad they were, leading me to this spot! The interior design of this restaurant has a "Mom and Pop" feel to it, and the food is absolutely amazing. I ordered the "Beef Rib" Pho (Absolutely amazing and highly recommend) and Pork Fried Egg Rolls. Both were authentic and absolutely mouth-watering delicious! This is the high quality caliber of Vietnamese food I am accustomed to growing up in Southern California. Absolutely recommend this place to all my Pho Lovers. Friendly and timely service. This place needs to be rated much higher than it is!

Dong Nai is a great restaurant. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and the food is delicious. I almost always order Rare Steaj Pho from Vietnamese restaurants, but I changed my mind and asked if I could order the Pork chop instead. Unfortunately, they were out of pork chop, so I ordered the grilled chicken. This was so yummy! The pork was juicy, not overcooked, and the fish sauce was the perfect compliment. I ended up taking a little home, and even reheated it was great! I also ordered Tofu Spring rolls which were nice and long, and came with a yummy peanut sauce. The ambiance was nice. It's a very casual spot, and there is ample parking as it shares a lot with Target. I really enjoyed my first visit here, and plan to come back next time I'm in town!

Had lunch here with a group and we all really really loved the food. The traditional spring rolls for an appetizer were SO good- crispy, hot, and with so much great flavor and vegetables. All of the main dishes we ordered were also so good with such huge portions. I got a vermicelli bowl with chicken and egg rolls, and it was amazing. The service was also amazing, as our server was attentive and routinely check in. The natural lighting also makes this place very peaceful to dine in. There were some flies inside though, but that was the only thing I wished was different. Parking outside was easy with a large lot. Lots of other restaurants and stores nearby too.

Upon walking in, the space is clean and spacious with plenty of seating. I went for the classic spring roll, which did not disappoint, as well as the bun bo hue. Granted this was my first time trying bun bo hue, but it came recommended and it did not disappoint. The broth was rich and flavorful, the meat was plentiful, and it was a generous portion. Service was prompt and the wait staff was attentive. When the craving strikes, I'll be making my way down here again.

The pho selection here isn't great in terms of meat/combinations but the brisket pho will get the job done. The broth is yummy and they use traditional noodles and toppings. I always feel really satisfied with my bowl. I've gotten the cafe sua da and I would skip it. It doesn't pack a punch like it should and in my opinion does not taste authentic.

Good casual spot for delicious and very affordable pho and Vietnamese dishes. The menu is extensive making it easy to find something for everyone, and the food came out quickly. While the restaurant is small, it wasn't overly crowded, and I was able to be seated with a party of two right away on a Friday night. The space was also very clean and well-maintained.

Perfect pitstop while charging your Tesla. I always find my way into one of the booths for a quick meal when I'm nearby. The pho was delicious and the egg rolls complimented the meal well by adding some crunch. The staff is friendly and diligent, and the ambiance is pretty chill.

Had an amazing bowl of pho here. I ordered the Dong Nai special which came with tender brisket, filet, and a perfectly cooked soy marinated egg. LOVED. The broth is legit! You know it comes down to the flavor of the pho broth and theirs is authentic and very tasty. They have gluten free egg rolls!! Rice paper like traditional egg rolls and they separate pork from shrimp which is really nice for people who cannot eat both. The service was good too. Will be returning (today lol). Yum!

I've been coming to Dong Nai occasionally for a few years. It wasn't a top 3 Pho spot for me in Austin but a "good" choice if I was around the area for lunch that was convenient given the ample parking in the large target parking lot + quick service that was used to bussing in folks coming in for a quick lunch break. They've redone the interior with a fresh new buildout and the ambiance today is a lot cleaner than the hole-in-the-wall vibes of old. Can't argue with clean new floors, fixtures, tables, and menus while still maintaining that strong immigrant efficiency. I wasn't a frequent diner but I also feel as if they've improved the quality of the food itself since I was last there. Whereas before I would not have pegged them in the "Top" pho list of Austin, their house special - the Dong Nai - which includes a fried soybean roll (which feels more Taiwanese than Vietnamese but delicious is delicious!) is actually insanely good. We often also get the shumai appetizer which is a solid B for Austin and what you end up with is a pretty tasty meal. I still can't imagine coming to Dong Nai for dinner, but I think the way they've stepped up their entire game over the past few years is memorable and I may find myself coming here for lunch much more often.

I ate here today. I ordered a Banh Mi sammich which was a very generous portion. I will probably get 3 or meals out of it. I walked in and had to use the restroom, when I came out, the hostess/waitress already had a nice glass of ice water along with a carafe of extra water for refills.waiting at my booth. Excellent food, good value, great service. read more

I like going here when I am down south as I know the pho is decent. I get the Havin' It! Pho... I keep ordering it... maybe one day I will get the beef rib one... when I have more time. I love my usual Pho.. I just wished the meatballs were an actual meatball and not a sliced meat ball. Otherwise it's good. :) The service is quick and the people are nice. I like their booths but they have tables to accommodate any size party. :) read more

Add this to one of the safe dishes to order at Dong Nai: Tom Kha Gai soup with a bit of coconut cream. Several things make it special such as not too creamy which would destroy my new diet, nice assortment of vegetables including delicious mushrooms, and less than half the price of nearby Sap's. It's missing the wonderful interplay of flavors that a good Thai version has, but it is a nice alternative and it's something else to order at this Vietnamese / Chinese restaurant that pleases. read more

We've loved this place for years. It went through some hard times around Covid, but really turned it around and did a full revamp of the dining room a few years ago. The food is fresh and we great. We never miss the pork Vietnamese egg rolls - and rotate through pho, banh mi and bun. It's a regular spot for us. Service is good and I like watching the cooking channel they play. read more

Awful experience. Ordered during lunch time for pick up- missing food items and/or any food with shrimp (despite shrimp cleared denoted on receipt) was either missing or made with chicken. Mistakes acknowledge on first call w/agreement to determine refund amount and for them to call back. Each subsequent call (to them btw) the story changed - bring food back, some tbd refund, 1/2 refund, can't speak to a manager (left for day, on vacation, etc). Simply uncalled for, rude and obnoxious behavior. Of the food we did receive- mediocre at best. Called BBB and credit card company for them to sort. Don't waste your money or energy on this place. read more

Adding a star to this updated review. The place has been renovated and have gotten a menu refresher as well, Dong nai offers northern Vietnamese styled pho. (Donut breadstick) some entrees include it but you can also request it on the side. This isn't on the menu but just an insider scoop! It's $4/stick which is a bit hefty but it's freshly made and worth it cause you can't get it else where in this area. Really excited to have this because my daughter loves these savory, umami sticks of dough. They're good alone or soaking in your pho. The service is on point. Someone is always watching to see if some attention or service is needed. The pho this time was good. The broth is clear and tasty. The herbs are fresh and clean. meat... no complaints. Definitely a costly meal for 1 but forgot having great service and a hard to find item, I'll have to return! read more

Came here on a weekend and I ordered the beef pho and the soup tasted funky. I ate it anyway and had some leftovers, which I brought home. The next day, the soup became this murky goo and tasted sour. There is definitely something not fresh in the pho broth. Service was attentive, which I appreciate. I also ordered the rice with grilled pork for the kids, it was average. Nothing amazing. read more

Food was great and the service was decent. However, the prices online don't match what they charge in person, and that was disappointing. Before I came, I checked the restaurant's online menu and saw the rice short ribs plate listed for $14, edamame for $6, and tea for $2 -- so I was expecting a total around $22 before tax and tip. When I got the bill, my total before tip was $34 because the rice short ribs alone were $22. I asked the waitress about it, and she apologized and said the online prices were more than two years old but she'd let the manager know. Later she told me the manager said they'd updated the prices online two days ago and were sorry but they didn't offer to match the listed prices or do anything to make it right. The food itself was very good, but it's the principle restaurants should make sure their posted menus reflect the actual prices. read more

It was good but not amazing.... Maybe it was just the dishes I ordered which were garlic and scallops and then also we ordered the special dong nai beef ribs in pho. I thought the garlic scallops was a little bit too sour tasting. The beef ribs were good but since it's pho it's not super flavorful. Maybe I just like Thai better.... read more

I'm not sure if the management has changed but it's so disappointing now. We ordered the beef soft flat noodles, the dong nai signature beef pho, and the lychee lemonade. The stir fried noodles were delicious with a nice peppery flavor, it was a pretty big portion- taking some of it home- but still prettt pricey. The beef in the pho was super tender and I loved the taste of the broth- perfect for a colder day! The lemonade was super unique- they added lychee pieces to the lemonade and it was very refreshing and sweet! read more

It's in a shopping complex off South Lamar better known for having a Target next door. Ambiance is mid-century at best, complete with neon signs in the windows and squeaky vinyl seats. Forge ahead and find the Buddha Pho; a veritable bucket of crisp, fresh vegetables, tender rice noodles, and savory, salty broth, with all the crisp bean sprouts and basil you crave for toppings. Stumbled upon this gem of a restaurant while charging my Tesla. I absolutely love Vietnamese food. This restaurant was very authentic! We loved everything we ordered! I had the yellow curry chicken and my husband had the short rib pho, which of course I tried. Our favorite was the egg roll appetizer! They came with all the fixings to roll them in a lettuce leaf, shredded carrots, cucumber slices and fish sauce to dip it in! Absolutely delicious! Chef's kiss! My least favorite item we ordered was the garlic chili edamame. It wasn't very flavorful and was somewhat over steamed/cooked. Restaurant was clean, service was great and prompt. The onion pancakes were amazing. And the special noodle with garlic pork was nothing I've had before but so so so good. And the portion was huge. We shared the onion pancakes amongst the 4 of us. And then the other two dishes with me and my fiance and we had leftovers. I want to come back here and try the pig's feet and orange chicken. Their menu is huge and I wish I could've ordered more but I knew we couldn't finish it. You know a Chinese restaurant is authentic when there's duck blood and pig's feet.

The items that did not smell and taste like butane were mediocre at best. Maybe it's just me though, and most people love how butane smells and tastes. Also, food comes out immediately, so you know it was just sitting in the kitchen premade. Oh, also extremely overpriced! So yeah, the high reviews for this place make no sense. Go figure!

Honestly, I don't know how this place has managed to get a 3.5 star average. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten, and I've had a lot of Chinese food from great restaurants (and bad) in a lot of different cities. I would opt for Panda Express any day over this. The fact that I might get a lot of food for my money or that it's cheap is not appealing. I'd rather have gotten less food, so I didn't feel bad throwing a bunch of it out. Everything was low quality pre-frozen type ingredients, probably the cheapest possible stuff from Restaurant Depot frozen section. Bland or unpleasantly fishy tasting, strange rubbery textures, and mediocre vegetables. Since this place has been given some decent ratings, I can only assume that the kitchen is extremely inconsistent in the quality they deliver - at best. Or that people who are eating this food have no idea what good Chinese food actually tastes like. and are just rating it on the perceived value of quantity to cost ratio (a horrible way to rate food!). Don't bother - go anywhere else, or make your own at home from box or can mix from the grocery store. read more

The first time my boyfriend brought me here I was skeptical, like is this how it ends for me in a very awkwardly decorated Vietnamese Restaurant? But then I had their lemongrass tofu and my life was changed. I only want lemongrass tofu from Dong Nai and nothing else, for like weeks on end. Now he hates himself for ever bringing me here and for every introducing me because I constantly put this as my #1 option for "what I want for dinner". I have only ever tried their kids chicken friend rice and it was pretty good but then the past few times Ive tried to order it they shoot me down because "Im not a kid", ew I don't like when places try to tell me how to live my life, but it's okay because lemongrass tofu pho is all I need to please me. Disregard the atmosphere or the tvs that cut out ever few minutes and go for the lemongrass tofu, try it in every dish they will make for you. Oh and get the bubble tea. Bubble tea quality here is reliably good. Has my seal of approval. read more

I been at this restaurant ever since it opened, and i have to say it has really good food. it might not be the fancy place but the food is amazing its fast i can just come and get my food and get out thats mainly what im determine to do then complain like most people. the food is cheaper then most place i mean come on the economy is down. what do you expect? the food is fresh and doesnt have much msg i would know. the pho is amazing and fresh unlike all the other crap u get which is all power meat and shit. when this is fresh meat the cook for hours. the vietnamese steak cubes is amazing :] the bun there is great thats how they make it and its amazing i dont like how other place make it i hate it when its grill it has this burn smell to it. the service are kind and its a family own place i always feel welcome. read more

I'm not a sandwich person, but have to admit that Dong Nai's shrimp Bahn Mi was outstanding. The bread was crispy and hot. It was sweet and fresh, filled with a whole bunch of crispy shrimp. It was as long as my forearm, and large enough for two. We shared the crispy pepper calamari, egg-drop soup, and the shrimp vermicelli. All these were decent. I'm glad I live close to this place. My wife and I order take out from here at least once a week. The lunch specials are really cheap, especially if it's just the two of you. It's not going to blow your mind, but if you're looking for a good place with both Chinese and Vietnamese food, this is it. Portions are fair, and you get a good value for your money. Customer service leaves a little to be desired but it's no worse than what you'd expect anywhere else. read more

This place is awesome. Vietnamese egg rolls, pork chop rice, filet minoin beef cube rice, wonton noodle soup, and pho. One stop shop. This place never disappoints. This is the only place in the Southwest area of Austin that has this kind of quality. I would go as far as saying it is Monterey Park, CA caliber food. The service is really good, and food is authentic and cheap. read more

The food isn't bad here. I like Pho Saigon better. But you cant beat the service. There is one guy in particular that I see working during the days. This guy is all over the place. He's the greater, the waiter, the bus boy, you name it. Awesome service. I really hope they pay that guy really well. read more
