I love dive bars but this place sucks. One bartender just wanted to hang out with his friends, and the other seemed to be having some sort of mental Breakdown. Been to Knomad 10+ times and I always feel like an outsider here. It's like no one wants to serve you and when they do it's for a draft beer that is priced $2 more than what it should be. I've never gotten the feeling of being welcomed here, but quite the opposite like I'm not supposed to be there and I'm inconveniencing them. Knomad is a neighborhood bar that occasionally offers live music indoors, which is why we visited, to see a couple of bands we like. It seems like a hot spot for the local hip millennial crowd with a few Gen-Xers (like me) mixed in. They offer a full bar and sometimes have food trucks. The latter were not there when we visited, so I can't comment on the culinary fare. It's a long, narrow space with a few tables, bar stools, and booths, with the stage at the back. The patio has a secluded feeling, since it's not only covered, but virtually enclosed with high lattice work barriers that separate it from the parking lot. It includes multiple tables, a TV, and speakers, though the speakers are connected to the bar's internal sound system and not the stage. So if you sit outside, you won't hear whatever live music may be happening. If you smoke, you'll be happy to hear that the entire patio seems to be a smoking section. If you don't (like me), you'll be disappointed to hear that the mounted fans don't clear the air past the patio enclosures, so the back patio will be reminiscent of what bars used to smell like in Austin before the indoor smoking ban. Parking is free in their attached lot, but it may fill up fast when the club does. Knomad was pretty full with small groups of chatty folks the night we visited. Overall, a decent club that you may love or not, depending on what you're looking for. IMO it beats the circus bar up the street. 3-1/2 stars read more

I have been a patron at Knomad Bar for several years. After last nights interaction with the entertainment, THE KARAOKE UNDERGROUND, I will not be going back. The "DJ" is rude, inconsiderate, condescending and just a general horrible person. I was there with friends like I usually do on Saturday nights. The "DJ" was playing the music so loud that you could not hear the person sitting next to you at the back of the bar! I went to the "DJ" and asked him to turn it down a bit so people could at least talk a bit. His response was "It's rock and roll, and if it's too loud too fucking bad." and proceeded to turn the music up even louder. After the interaction, I walked over, paid my bill and left. To the owner of Knomad Bar, this "DJ" is costing you more money than they are bringing in. They run customers out of the bar and some will probably not come back because of the "DJ". read more

Terrible. Watered down cokes, we interacted with one employee who was nice. The building is dirty. Cockroaches crawling around on the floor. The best part were the patrons. They were fun. Of course there are fun patrons all over Austin. The main upset was we were there on New Year's Eve, and realized the owner of the bar, Miguel Jimenez, was spraying a foamy substance all over our car in the parking lot right after midnight. Fireworks were being shot off the back of our car. When my husband asked him to stop, he began to curse at my husband. It was a shameful display of disrespectful behavior towards your patrons. Our car wasn't the only one that was trashed out. We had to leave to try to find a place to wash our car. After inspecting our car we found chips in the paint. This is a proper dive that has a lot of old Austin flavor. The Saturday crowd is full of eclectic individuals that are super friendly and fun to talk to. First Saturdays have Kareoke Underground and it's a ton of fun. The staff is cool, even though they have to deal with some pretty drunk asshats, which they stop serving, and rightfully so. Fun place if you're a fun person. Not for the yuppies that's for sure. read more

Extremely rude staff that gave me a hard time after checking my ID (I'm 40ish with a grey beard) which is expired, so I ordered a water. I literally brought 15 people to this show, all of whom purchased drinks without being carded. Some of us were actually interested in booking there. Sad to say that's not the case. I ordered water and didn't take a sip from anyone's drinks. When I walked up to show the TABC website, the bartender wouldn't let me finish a sentence, and got the seemingly coked up bar back (other bartender?) in a "Twilight" shirt to yell at me about how I had harassed her 8 times (utterly untrue, with many witnesses). I walked away to "play by the rules", didn't want to mess with trying to get more water to avoid causing more of a scene after they escalated, and quietly had a conversation with someone else while the twilight guy fumed, said audibly "that's it" and had the bouncer forcibly kick me out. I brought it to one of the bartenders attention and she comped my drink. I went back to my table and found tiny black floaters in my previous drink that was at our table. I really liked this bar. No thrills, no frills, just a good hole in the wall bar. They've got a nice covered patio and a large smoking section. Lots of tables and a friendly bartender. Update: Since posting my experience here I have received an intimidating Personal Message from one of the "regulars" here that basically said I misinterpreted my experience here as racism because the owner is a minority and that there are sometimes bartenders of color that work here. First off, what I witnessed was racism, plain and simple. And, for someone to try and brush it off as me "misinterpreting" it as "some other reason for your friend not getting service as fast as she would like", just goes to show the type of patronage here. I also received a comment from the owner about not calling his bar "overtly racist" when it isn't. I am sorry to say I will not be removing that statement from my review as it was my initial experience there. That is the beauty of capitalism, freedom of choice, and having a review site to state your experiences openly and truthfully. I had absolutely no idea of this place before coming here, so there is no ill will or underhanded plot. However, when my friend and I experience something like that, especially in this day and age, I take the "see something, say something approach". Respectfully, sir, if you don't want your establishment viewed in this light, then do not have employees who selectively treat patrons, especially new ones, in such a manner and then when confronted be a complete jerk about it. This all could have gone a completely different way had your bartender just apologized for ignoring my friend and served her. But, instead, he was the one who chose to escalate it and make race an issue. As a compassionate human person and a productive member of society, I chose the most vocal platform I had access to to bring this to the Community's, which you also reference in your reply, attention to ensure it is addressed and hopefully does not happen again. It is your customer's choice to read and heed my review and if it does have an affect on your patronage, you may need to ask instead of pointing blame outward, to look in-house. Also, in response to my claim of racism in regards to our treatment here "being a dangerous road to go down", it absolutely is, but not because of the "mob mentality" of me and my fellow Yelpers voicing our experience. It is a dangerous road to go down to think that is in any way acceptable treatment of a customer, regardless of race, and especially because of it! It is a dangerous road to go down to not say anything and to be intimidated or guilted by having that behavior justified or brushed off. Casual racism is not ok and being vocal about it should never be called out as going down "a dangerous road". The danger lies in the complacency, not the action. As for the $1.75 "honest mistake", please keep the offer of a refund. If that is how you define "honesty", yet another reason I will not be returning to this establishment. *To clarify, I am straight out saying the bartender that served me and was a disrespectful ass to my friend behavior was racist, and since receiving an intimidating message from a regular here, by proxy the establishment, since this sort of conduct is not only acceptable here, but defensible by the regular patrons. read more

FIVE STAR DIVE BAR!! About two weeks ago, I checked out Surf by Surf East, which is an annual surf rock music fest, at Nomad Bar. King Pelican was the headliner. I saw them in San Antonio the last time I went to Texas, and knew this would be a great show. Because I was staying downtown, I took a Fasten to the club. Nomad Bar is in a mini strip mall near the Target by I-35. I saw a bus stop station nearby, but I went with ride share since I wasn't familiar with the area. Nomad Bar has an outdoor patio area that's accessible only from the inside of the bar. I checked it out for a bit because it was such a nice night out, but went back indoors. The stage where the bands played is inside. Behind the stage is a projection screen. Most of the acts that night had YouTube videos looping in the background. The sound in Nomad is good for acts. Got some really good recordings inside. I sat mostly at the high tables towards the front by the entrance. I split a pizza pie, which was tasty (an independent business does the food at Nomad). Drink prices were pretty good here; I stuck mostly to Dos XX. In between acts, I checked out the game room, where there are darts and an arcade game. The game room is well-lit, which is in contrast to the main bar/indoor area that's dark and dive-y (in a good way). King Pelican were awesome that night (as expected). I would come back to Nomad the next time I'm in Austin. You should check it out. read more

I've been coming to Knomad now for a few years, and while it's location may be deceiving, the inability to find parking outside should be a good indicator! It's definitely our "go-to" local bar, and we pop in and out usually at least once a week, even it's for just for a quick drink. The management is the NICEST, most gracious bunch you could ask for, and they are almost always present, making sure everyone is happy and tended to. The bar staff is all phenomenal, no matter what time you go in. The have a game room, several TV's/projectors, and even have live music on certain nights. They have a great Sunday brunch deal that really can't be beat. They pour a great drink, and have a nice pizza menu to order from as well! They have an awesome, very large, dog-friendly patio with tv's, heaters, and misters. They have plenty of dog bowls for your pup, and a water cooler inside for you to use. They have a great sense of community too, and often have events going on that are open to everyone. Huge thanks to Miguel, Tammy, Jordan, and Audrey for always being the best bar staff in town! read more

So here's the thing, we were coming to Knomad back when it was Nomad. We lived walking distance away in the Windsor Park neighborhood about 3 years ago before moving further north. This was before kids, a mortgage, and all the other amazing perks of adulthood. We were just 2 kids in love hanging out at the bar with friends. But then we thought we'd get married and the very next day had brunch at Nomad. When we got our first pup together we brought him to Nomad. Even when I was pregnant Nomad owner stopped by to congratulate us. So see, Nomad is more than a bar to us. It's where where our roads crossed, it's where we made friends and created a family. We don't get to make it there often these days, but Nomad will always be home! read more

Oxford states - "Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race"...... The ironic thing is that the incompetent owner (Miguel) has just committed a racist act as clearly identified in his posts. The blatant example being, the lack of communication to any of the three African American's that have left negative reviews in regard to this past Saturday's event. Don't be too surprised, as it appears to be inline with his poorly managed business. Considering I've been phoning the establishment for two days now, only to be greeted with a recording of "the mailbox of the person you're trying to reach is full and no new messages are being accepted, please try your call again later"......... Well Miguel, I've tried my call again for several hours now. Perhaps you should place that book of Mein Kamph down and clear your voicemail. What has sparked all of the recent one star reviews one may ask? This past Saturday several friends of mine ventured into Nomad to enjoy a few drinks. Jordan, one of the bartenders seemed to be a little "weathered". I'm not sure if he had too many shots as I've seen him do in the past or what, but he apparently wasn't taking to kindly to the ethnicities standing in front of him, awaiting service. Instead he helped many "whites" and I use this term loosely, prior to them, even though they were positioned first in line. This wasn't an isolated incident. It happened more than once that evening, to more than one African American in our group. Jordan has waited on me several times in the past, so I approached him and asked what prompted him to threaten one of my friends with being ejected from the bar. When I mentioned that I've got too many witnesses that have the same recount he replied "this isn't a court room, I don't care about witnesses". Needless to say he was irrationally defensive and had no intention of calming the situation down. The sad part is that I've visited this location several times for about a year. I initially noticed on my first visit that the establishment carried a slight Riff Raff tone and wasn't an example of "class". As I continued to patronize the location, I'd see female patrons wearing sandals reflecting heels that are in need of major pedicures, customers with dogs inside the bar area which appeared to frustrate some patrons, heck, even the Owner Miguel, was overly tipsy celebrating his birthday recently at the bar, and my girlfriend and I witnessed him acting belligerent and was showing butt crack, while cranking up the music more than once to the point it was annoying. So Miguel, stop the PR nonsense and clean up your mess. As I look back through Yelp, you've been slapped with one star reviews about racism and poor service in the past. The fact it's still continuing leans more towards condoning your staff's behavior or cementing the fact you're an incompetent manager. I'm sorry but I have to give Nomad 1 star for customer relations and satisfaction. After an awesome UYE, (Unofficial Yelp Event), nearby with 31 in attendance. I suggested to 15 that we continue the festivities at Nomad, a bar/lounge that I thought would be a great choice especially since to me, they craft the best caipirinhas in town. When I first visited Nomad, Jordan crafted the perfect caipirinha, using a top shelf cachaça, gaining my respect. Last evening, I immediately realized that he was not in good form when he began using lemon instead of lime for my caipirihna, he corrected his mistake and said, "It's been a long day", and I accepted that but what was unacceptable, was disrepecting a member of my group. I attended a post Unofficial Yelp Event event at the Nomad. I noticed one of my friends ( a black woman) abruptly leave the venue with her sister. I was told that she had a confrontation with the bartender over not serving her. I later witnessed my Hispanic friend stand by an empty bar not receiving service even though 3 bartenders looked directly at him, yes they made eye contact. A Caucasian person walked up to the bar not 5 feet from my friend and he was immediately served. After speaking with my friend to validate what I witnessed I was disgusted by this behavior and left the bar. Please note, as a Caucasian male, I had no issues ordering drinks. I also have a complaint regarding their drinks. If you are a regular you receive a healthy pour if you are a non-regular it's a pretty lite pour. Yes I was a bartender and know the count. The important fact is that I witnessed discrimination against my friends of color. I really don't give a flying hoot about lite pours for non-regulars. I went here last night with a large party of coworkers and sat at a big table in the back. I was hungry so I ordered a pizza. We demolished it and ordered 2 more, each different. I'm new to Austin and had family in town visiting and we wanted to check out this place because it was in walking distance from my residence and looked cool but when we went there it was fairly empty with the exception of a few regulars as everyone there was in a small corner including the bar tenders. As a result we felt very unwelcome like an after thought. Then the bartender tried to start a fight with some other guests! I can't believe the other patrons managed to escape that situation unharmed and my party and I slipped out shortly after. Needless to say this was mortifying to see and I wouldn't recommend anyone go here. Super shady establishment. Prettt sure they were racist because the people they started an altercation with were the only minorities in the bar and they seemed to have been targeted. This place is trashy AF read more

Part of my thirty-some-odd year plan for success is to primarily set goals I think that I can actually accomplish. I try to sleep (at least once a day). I eat when I'm hungry (but not too much). And I try to stop over at any new bars opening up off Cameron Road when I hear about 'em. Call it a three point plan. In due accordance with that idea, I stopped in at Nomad last night for the first time, and it was cool. The proprietor here has been in the Austin bar biz for many moons, this appears to be his shot at his own neighborhood bar, and I haveta say I like what he's done thus far. It's a moddish work-in-progress, a cool outdoor patio featuring a giant sixties-type patio cover, inside giving way to a spare if not twee sleek bar and small stage area. They had a bar band playing last night, and word I'm hearing through the grapevine is this place is seeing some regular traffic from some pretty well respected local acts. And though they're not in my neck of the woods, it was a cool enough experience that I'll be giving them another shot providing the weather cooperates. And I won't even need a sherpa. read more

I really like this place... yet another bar I've visited only because of trivia. I don't even know why I like it so much. I shall describe. It is dive-y and in a really unremarkable neighborhood. There are flyers and posters all over the walls. The inside is kind of cramped and doesn't have a lot of seating; outside can be better although still cramped, but there are heat lamps! Roast like meat under red lights. The pizza is like really good... again, no idea why. I think of it and dream of fluffy crust, the ideal amount of toppings, and wholesome flavor. They have twice now screwed up our order and brought the wrong pizza out - late and without apology - but I'll keep ordering it. Dim, not overly friendly, and a little crowded... but good vibes. We got us a new Bar on the Upper East Side. The Nomad bar which just opened last Saturday (3-8-08) is awesome. Situated just off of Cameron Rd, on Corona. Nomad has a huge mostly covered patio, great beer selection and all the wine and liquor you could possibly want. With spring and summer coming, I'm looking forward to spending quality time on their patio. Oh, least not forget, they have darts and foosball. Nomad, when I've just gotten off work at 10:30 p.m. and I'm about ready to have a drink or two as a way to unwind from all the unpleasantness of my job, you sure do know how to do the trick. The bartenders are all great. Maybe it's because I come here so often now that they all recognize me, but they were friendly and helpful even when I was a newbie here. I like $1 beer nights on Mondays. I've only been twice, but I certainly approve. (Pretty sure it's only Tecate and Modelo, though.) There is a room to the left of the bar where there is a dart board and a foosball table. The patio is really nice and they allow dogs. Funny story - one time, one of my coworkers was hit on by the weirdest old lady who talked to us for two hours about her dogs. I don't remember most of the conversation, but it wasn't my attention she wanted, anyway. There is a $10 minimum on cards, but they don't always enforce that rule. I had my first Irish Car Bomb here. I ran up the largest bar tab in my brief drinking history here. ($30, for those who are curious. I know, I know, I'm not even out of the minor leagues yet when it comes to bar tabs.) I love this bar. Great drink specials pretty much all the time, especially Mondays they have $1 tecates, Tues and Thursday they have 2 dollar pints -- including wheat beers. Even when they are slammed with people, it's ALWAYS easy to get a drink at the bar. They have excellent bar tenders who remember what you were drinking and hardly ever need reminders about what name your tab is under. The outside area is really nice, covered and plenty of seating. Allows dogs and smoking. Been on Thursday nights for Geeks Who Drink and it's a blast every time. Good way to spend a night at a bar with your friends. They use to have the traveling bistro which I loved because they had a cheese, fruit and nut plate which is so much better than most greasy bar foods. Unfortunately they now have a different food vendor and I haven't tried them yet so I don't know if it's good. But the bar has $2 gourmet popcorn inside if you want something light. The bathrooms have all chalkboard walls so you get all the fun of writing in the bathroom but no permanent junk. There is a breathalyzer machine in the hallway which I have never used but it's a cool notion. There is a small side room with darts and a pool table. I've never been that room because it's usually occupied and to be honest it might not be a pool table, it could be foosball - I can't remember! I've been to this bar half a dozen times now and finally getting around to review it. It's hard to put a label on this one. I don't consider it a dive or strip mall bar, because they usually have these: Rank bathrooms, no draft beer (if so, maybe one), and limited space. Nomad meets none of these. Service is always great and it's a plus when the staff will drink with you. Good draft selections, plenty of liquors and drink specials spread throughout the week. Comfortable seating for big and small groups, with a spacious patio as well. Crowd is laid back and mostly people who live in the surrounding neighborhood. Brunch on Sundays and Geeks who drink on Thursdays. So to hell with labels, just come here and drink.. read more
