Solid tavern style bar. Parking is a little bit of a challenge., but worth it. The thing that saves this place as a really good bar is the customer service, and really well made drinks. Plenty of sitting, with inside and outside sitting. I would definitely go back with friends! Side Note: Area is a little sketchy, so be situationally aware of your surroundings. SXSW is always a frenzied event! Bands clamoring for places to play. Anyplace will do. Just throw some amps and drums on a parking lot and you have a show. Anything goes and usually does in Austin, speaking as a person from San Antone. During this time the smallest dive bars become hot spots. I went to this place called The Nomad Bar and it was smaller than I had imagined. The decor, ambiance and patrons made it seem like an episode from Season One of Portlandia. And I liked that. I identify with that quirkiness. As one might expect the bar is small. However, there is a good selection of brews, especially showcasing the local breweries. The bartenders and staff are ultra-friendly. What I really liked was the door -person. He was very professional and none of the ones I have experienced in the past. You know the type, the one who thinks he is some secret service operative doing detail duty for the president. It is very chill, laid back. The stage is set low, again this is cool as a patron, because it creates an intimate bond between the audience and the musician. Don't worry as a smoker you will are not forgotten, despite the city's Draconian Laws against you. There is a patio where you can take your drink, smokes, honey and hang outside. It is Jimmy Buffet/ flip-flops laid back. The Nomad is also pet-friendly so you can bring your Benji's, Jiggys, Dinkys to this place. I spotted an owner with a cute Labrador and brew in tow. It's a very matter of fact atmosphere. You don't have to worry about wearing the combination of a Vanilla Ice t-shirt and cowboy hat, as I have seen others do in Austin. No pretension at all. Just lots of fun. I do have two itsy-bitsy critiques of this place though. This place gets jam-packed, so the parking situation can be an issue. And on the brewsky front some of the prices for the craft beers are not El Cheapo. However, they have good prices on their mixed drinks and you can always go the Lonestar Beer route, which is always the popular way to go on a show anyway. This is a pretty quaint place with a friendly bar staff and patrons to match. As the bar increasingly becomes a universal refuge for all, there is no longer the need to "Keep Austin Weird!" I was also with the Yelp group on Saturday and I am the one who wanted to see for myself if this weird prejudice was really going down. I stood with a Mexican friend at the bar waiting for service and sure enough when it was my turn to order 2 white ladies walked up behind me and the bartender pointed to them behind me and asked what they'd like. Skipped right over us. I don't understand because the guy who did that to Tisha and myself is Mexican.... All the people Miguel got to come write reviews are saying they were busy, its normal to wait in line for drinks, etc no shit Sherlock! We're talking about being skipped over time and time again. Tisha below was right, I was there and saw it happen then I experienced it 3 times. I love discovering a new dive bars but NOT THIS TIME. So you have 3 bartenders behind the counter who could not give a shit if you were there or not.......cool, I can deal with that. I ride a Harley and have been to many a shit-hole and have never been treated so badly. I was sitting DIRECTLY across the bar with a bunch of YELP friends (15 to be exact) and I saw 4 instances where minorities were just all but ignored then some white person walks up and bingo-bango they are served. Let's address the concerns about racism: Fact: there is a dickhead bartender who works here. He shouldn't work here. He's an ass to everyone. He hasn't served me. Wow, a bunch of Yelpers band together and try to take down a fine establishment that's been around for something like 9 years after a single visit? You'll show them!! Now, on to the review. First things first, the Nomad is not a dive bar, it's a bar. Give me 10 more years and I will personally get it there. The neighborhood dive bar is down the street and it's called the Carousel Lounge (see previous review). The Nomad has been a great addition to the '23 and '52 codes as a full bar alternative for people who are too scared to make their own drinks at the CL. They have all the things a good bar needs in 2017 Austin. That would entail, a bar, good bartenders, craft beer, cheap beer, cocktails, a patio, a game room, live music in all forms, (including Punk Rock Karaoke and rippin' Surf nights on the Second Saturday of the month) plenty of parking, an omni-present owner who's a fun dude, couches, pizza, (I'll give them a pass on the Internet Jukebox), a hidden gem of a Sunday Brunch, trivia (I think), and most of all a clientele that registers a low reading on the Douchebag-o-meter. Cheers to my favorite neighborhood dive bar! Divey for hella sure, but divey is my favorite kind of place. The bartenders are always super sweet, and the gin and tonics never disappoint. Over the past 3 years of living in the neighborhood, I've taken locals and out of towners to this place, and they have enjoyed the overall atmosphere...at least this is what they have told me. My usual is Austin Beerworks can of Pearlsnap, and they serve it just right. Sometimes on Fridays, they have surf rock nights, where a bunch of middle aged dads come together to play hits from all those Gidget movies. I kid you not, it is so much fun. Last time I went to Surf rock night, I struck up conversations with a bunch of strangers, which is always a sign of a good night. Don't let the crumbly aesthetic of this comfy neighborhood dive fool you. Yes, it's located in a strip mall, across the street from Ross, but like the saying says: Don't judge a book by it's cover. I went there for a drink after work last night. The short bald bartender was very rude and unwelcoming to say the least. It was as if I was imposing on him by asking for a couple beers and a shot. When I closed my tab he threw my card and receipt at me pretty aggressively. All I did was order politely and say "please/thank you". I was not drunk or partying obnoxiously, just looking for a night cap after a long days work. Good neighborhood bar. They have a small but decent selection of bottled and draught beer plus a full bar. Food was tasty, also. Daily pizza is a rotating selection. Tried the cheese pizza, meat pie, and crostinis - great bar grub. The live band (Tuesday night) was playing some swingy country stuff like you'd hear at the Spoke or Jovita's, and there is outside seating if you'd rather chat up your date. Don't know what the negative reviews referring to discrimination were smoking - I and my fellow Latino and Black friends have not had any issues ordering drinks at this bar that i've ever heard, and i've been frequenting this place for the last 3 years. Girls get served before guys typically if the bartenders are male at any bar, and vice versa - I dont whine about it. I want to defend and applaud this place because it is much more than just a bar. They are the ONLY venue in the entire Austin area to have consistent Surf Rock shows, they are one of the cleaner bars in town - to the point where I even brought my mother and teenage cousins on separate occasions. They serve good pizza and the drinks aren't as expensive as many other places. The bar and staff are good to the bands which goes a very long way in this town. Overall I'd say go check it out for yourselves, especially for Second Saturday Surf. I doubt you'll be disappointed : ) read more

Always have wanted to like this place, but they make it difficult. They have never been pleasant or welcoming in any way to my self or anyone I know who has been. They act as if they are doing you a favor to have you there. Plus the inside smells like old stale cleaning fluid, their on tap beer is stale and flat, and the outdoor tables are wobbly as can be. Dear lord this place is LOUD. Well, the indoors is loud. I didn't try outside because I was being a total weather wimp. Really cool vibe at the Nomad Bar. For me, it's in a bit of a shady area but I've been known to overreact about that sort of thing before. Great deals on beer on tap, that makes me happy. I think $6, $7 is insanity for a draft beer, nice to know this place is available at a decent price - $3.00 (on special) 512 IPA. The staff here is pretty cool as well. The bartenders are really relaxed yet attentive. The lady-chef popped in to ask us if we wanted anything and struck up an interesting conversation with Tony "I can grill anything!" B. They were talking about grilled watermelon with chili peppers. Something about crystalized sugar and spicy sweet. I was impressed. Too full from Thai to try anything but I will next time. I've been to Nomad 4 - 5 times. The 5 star goodness is that I like the location, the parking, and the feel of the bar. And the owner is a really nice guy. On the downside, every time I go a certain bartend makes me swear that I'll never go back. I've dealt with her several times and she has yet to say a word to me... I know she's busy but she doesn't have to treat me and everyone (except her friends with whom she does shots) like we're bothering her. And they could use more staff when it's busy... I often have to wait 10 minutes just to make eye contact with the nice bartender. But maybe there's no room for more staff... not sure. So I love the vibe and the location but not the attitude I get from the bar. read more

Nomad does everything right except for personnel: the decor and lighting are excellent, both inside and out, the beer and liquor selection are both good, and it's located in an area that has few bars and draws a good crowd. However, the "service" has been consistently *offensive*. I've heard that the owner is a friendly guy, but he sure hires some snobby jerks. My favorite story is from my friend that got bitched at for ordering too many "bottomless" mimosas during Sunday brunch. The waitress told him, in an especially snotty tone, "you're cutting into our bottom line". a) Why is that her problem, b) I seriously doubt that is true, and c) he really hadn't had that many (yet). WTF? Personally, I've found that the bartenders go out of their way to let you know who their friends are, and that you're much less important than them. It's not subtle either: They make eye contact with you, and then continue talking to their friends at the bar for several minutes, or serve the guy that just walked in the door when you've been waiting. I'm not talking about a lazy afternoon either -- this is like 9 or 10pm on a weekend when the place is a bit busy. I understand that these things happen occasionally, but over 3 or 4 visits spanning a year or two? Save your business for someplace that wants it. read more

Cute little "neighborhood bar" altho none of the neighborhood demographics are there.....hmmm. Anyway, they got sweet tea vodka. Yay! In a tiny glass for $6. Boo! They also got Ace Pear Cider (don't know how much...that one was bought for me). The bartenders seemed cool to me and let me close my tab without the mandatory $10 minimum. This place has a cute little outdoor patio with lots of greenery, like an oasis in the, well, ghetto. And the bathroom was cool with an entire wall made of chalkboard. No chalk to be found tho. Boo! One thing I have to warn you, is this place is not that easy to find in the dark...when it's raining. Even once I found little tiny Corona street and saw the strip center with all the cars in it, I couldn't make out the bar sign. It was not well lit and the letters are in some artsy bubble font. Allright. I like Nomad a LOT more than I used to. And it's not just because I can walk here (NEVER alone though, that's just wrong). Okay, I don't know how to explain it but it's one of my favorite "outside of downtown" bars. The drinks are cheap, super strong, they do strange karaoke and other random events all the time. There is typically a caterer for your mealtime pleasure (no longer Grill Girls). They even have a Sunday brunch buffet. And if I were into that whole "stuffing your face til you want to throw up" sort of thing then I'd totally be in for this. I've heard it's actually really good. We typically come here for the patio. And the strong drinks of course. Oh, you have no idea what a luxury a patio is! To not have one is painful. And the beautiful view of the back of the Conoco station and some very Hawaiian looking trees. Yes, the patio is special to me. Nomad is more than just your typical neighborhood bar. For one, it's always busy. And I take back what I said about not recommending this place on a weekend night. I would recommend it for a weekend night. It's chill but usually pretty happenin'. I also dig their glassware here. And I always plan on stealing one of their glasses but never remember to bring a purse. Their glassware says "It's good to be in the 23." THAT'S RIGHT. This place is turning into one of my favorite bars in town. For one, it's loungy but definitely still feels like neighborhood joint. It's in a weird area close by to multiple taqueria-type places, so there's easy access to drunk food. The patio rocks. They carry good beer like Duvel and Chimay (although I want to petition that they get some Session) and they stock a mean bar. All those good things aside, they had me at the sit-down Ms. Pac-Man table. Not to get off-subject, but this game solves two very important problems while playing video games at a bar: 1) I'm drunk and tired of standing 2) Where do I put my beer? So kudos, Nomad. A few of us stopped by after the Twin Liquors OYE this past Friday night, because gosh knows we just didn't get enough to drink in a liquor store. Shame on us! It reminded me a little of the Loon in Dallas, but more awesome. I originally pinned it as a dive bar but Kevin N placed it correctly as a neighborhood bar. Everyone seemed to know everyone else and it had a really homey feel. Shane was the most adorable bartender ever! He took super great care of us - my drink never went empty and his vibe was just simply friendly, like everyone in the joint was his buddy. He even made me some empanadas after the kitchen closed...how sweet! I didn't get a chance to see what the jukebox had to offer, but from the tunes that Kevin chose I could tell it has some good stuff. And best of all? There's a lot to love about Nomad, and since the bar scene is kind of a wasteland on the NE side of town, I end up here fairly often. It's got a hip (without being hipster) vibe, eclectic clientele, a good jukebox (that's generally playing TOO LOUD), and a nice outdoor patio that's dog-friendly. Hooray! Guess these folks like me, cause I've never had a problem getting what I wanted here. Maybe it's the people that I know (old Austinites who frequent the joint) or maybe it's because I'm not some uptight jerk or douchey bro. Whatever the case, the service is as busy as however many people are there ahead of you. I don't expect special treatment, but sometimes I get it. The patio has plenty of seating and tables that make the space conducive to conversation whether you're a smoker or not. It's a solid little structure, so even when there is a band or something playing the stage, you can take your crew outside and carry on a normal conversation. The lighting is low, and the furniture is comfortable. They serve food and drink here, so if you're early enough you may have a chance to eat, that's not me though. Haven't tried any of that. I will come to this bar to drink once in a while because it's out of the way of downtown. The feel is pretty laid back, and a little hip, but not unbearably so, more of a neighborhood bar with a little more class than others. I'd give it a 3-1/2 stars, but bump it up to 4 because they have Karaoke Apocalypse and Karaoke Underground here. read more

This is such a great neighborhood bar, it makes me jealous that I don't live in north Austin. A sweet owner that hugs me on the way in, running into an old friend that turns out to be bartending; and in full disclosure, I knew them both before this bar opened. A very chill bar and lounge with a GREAT wine menu offers everything I am asking for, including ample outdoor seating. It kind of reminds me of what Club DeVille used to be. Very cool, without trying too hard and all the locals get that. There was even a bit of a puppy meet-up while I was in there on Friday night. Kevin N. and I swung by here the other night while I was in town, and I have to say, I felt super-comfortable at Nomad. It's listed as a "lounge," and I see how that cateogry could fit -- it seems new-ish, and cleaner than a lot of neighborhood bars that I'm used to. Yet even with that little bit of polish, things felt laid back and yes indeed, neighborly. Our barkeep (one of the Mason bros.?) was so friendly in his greeting and service, and chimed in as Kevin told stories about the place. He poured a pretty perfect vodka tonic, and I was able to try some Tito's (not bad, not bad at all!) with a little twist. We eyed the patio, but decided to stick tot he AC-ed area, as my northern blood was still recovering form the shock of the day's 100 degree temps. The bartender was in fact so friendly that he pulled out a few bucks from his tip jar and told Kevin and I to have at it with the jukebox. Now if you know me, you know no one has to ask me twice to go explore a good jukebox! This was one of those weird internet jukeboxes, but the selections already on it were pretty great, and I think we came up with a good mix of all sort of things between Otis Redding and the Pixies. What has happened to The Nomad? Once a place with attentive and friendly bar staff, I now have gotten used to being invisible when I go in. On a recent Wednesday night visit, each time I went up to the bar to order (4 times), I was ignored while I stood there, even though I was one of two customers and three guys were behind the bar. (It wasn't during slam time either.) I don't need to say much more, just it would be nice to see a return to form for the Nomad. A once good bar is now, well, not. Tighten up guys. This is an awesome bar. Not a lot of parking in the lot, but tons of space on the street nearby which is very convenient. There are also bike racks, which I deeply appreciate! There are lots of random events happening all throughout the week (including Geeks Who Drink Trivia every Thursday - get there SUPER early if you want a table!). Inside has a few tables, and they have tons of seating out back on their awesome covered patio. My only complaint about the patio is that the entire thing is basically a smoking section, so there's nowhere for people who don't smoke to sit away from the cigarette smell and still be outside (which is where you'll probably have to sit on a busy night because the seating outdoors is far more plentiful than the seating inside!) But this is in no way unique to this bar, so I digress. The drinks here are strong and they've got different drink specials every night of the week. The bartenders are always really friendly and entertain my incessant need to make small talk while closing my tab. I've never ordered food here, but I've heard the Sunday brunch is one of the best in the neighborhood! I'll definitely be checking it out sometime. read more

I've been waiting for the opening of this bar for a long time now. I finally have been able to go a couple of times just to have a drink. I've got to say, I are impressed. This is the only bar I've been to that carries Pyramid Apricot Weizen on tap, rather than the bottle! Plus, you need to try their apple infused vodka. It's a big jug of vodka with tons of apple slices marinating in it. I swear, it tastes like you're taking a shot of spiked apple pie, and it doesn't leave a lot of burn in your throat. I must admit, my review for this place is slightly biased since my boyfriend is a bartender here. More like a 4.25-4.75 stars. A minor loss, because on my last visit they blew the keg on Guinness and then the Live Oak. Redemption came in the form of a free 3/4 full glass of beer! I've driven by this place and never thought to stop in. WHY NOT?! I asked myself...why not, indeed! (I actually answered myself...keep in mind this was after a few drinks). After what can only be described as a soul punishing seminar about communicating with patients led by a seemingly time traveling hippie, a few class mates and I decided to wipe the memories of the 2 days clear with a few drinks. Plenty of seating, great beer (bottle and draft) selection, and a full bar. Cool bartenders who actually seem to enjoy being there and are attentive to all the customers without pretense. Prices seem about average, so no complaints there. One big highlight is the dog friendly patio. Always a plus in my book. They have food too, although I haven't had a chance to try anything yet, but I will. From what I understand they also have a Sunday brunch with...get this...10$ ENDLESS MIMOSAS! Nomad is the cool neighborhood bar everyone wishes was in their hood. First and foremost, that bar is PHAT. It's stacked with almost any hard liquor the drunk in you could hope for. They have a varied beer selection, too. They have darts, foosball, and Ms. Pac-Man for the sporty bar-goer. And for all you taggers out there, they have chalkboard walls in the bathrooms - they even supply the chalk! Inside the atmosphere is very cool. Lots of candlelit tables set the mood. Outside there's a huge patio with plenty of tables, too. The misters need some work, though. I felt more like I was getting hosed by a crotchety old neighbor than actually being misted. Considering the poor excuses for a watering hole I've got in my hood, Nomad kinda makes a southie wanna pack up and move further north, north-central that is! This bar is very high on my personal favorites list - it's well-located off of the dingy Cameron Road corridor (Church's Fried Chicken, anyone?), an "ez on, ez off" from I-35. Once you find a place to park, entering the Nomad just feels 'right' and 'relaxing' - like a lot of the bars in Austin used to be. It's casual. You'll never see a velvet rope and pesky valet parkers asking for the keys to your beaten down (but paid for!) Pinto or El Camino. Nice... The drinks are well-concocted. Service is very efficient. The patio is a great escape from the hard surfaces inside (read: LOUD at times). I concur with what Allison P so sagely writes: "reminds me of what Club Deville used to be." The only reason Nomad doesn't get five stars from me is because it's not in my neighborhood and I'm vindictive and mean like that. This place is very nice and comfortable without being pretentious, has cool chalkboard walls in the bathroom (I wrote "For a good time call..." along with my sister's phone number. If anyone happens to read it, PLEASE CALL. It will be hilarious) and serve up really nice drinks. I hear the snackage offered is lovely, though I have not tried any of it. My lady friends and I really enjoyed the wine recommendations we received and were especially thrilled to be in a cool bar sans any downtown douchebaggery. In my top 5 places to grab a drink in Austin. Awesome patio. Really cool atmosphere inside and out. They don't charge an arm and a leg for any drink. Happy hour is great with $3 wells. They also have pizza that is free but of course they accept tips. And the pizza is actually damn good. Bartenders are always fast and friendly. I never see anyone in a bad mood here. I went here on a Saturday night with a group of friends for karaoke. The area it is in is a little rough around the edges. That doesn't really bother me as I grew up partying in bars and clubs in SE DC, but did prompt me to move some stuff I had in the back seat to the trunk just in case. Inside it is very loud, the music is turned up just a tad too high for conversation, especially considering we arrived at 830. If it had been later it would have been fine. I liked the decor, seemed to be a lot of regulars that go here, as the bartender knew most of the people hanging around the bar. That leads in to the issues I had with Nomad bar. I waited about 5 minutes for the bartender to even acknowledge me, even though there were only 6 or 7 people at the bar at the time I ordered my first drink. I asked her what she recommended (not beer) and she gave me a blank stare and said "umm" a couple times and then made me something she called a "long beach" which apparently is a sex on the beach with sprite and cranberry in it. It was ok, not nearly strong enough, a bit too watery. I understand this is not a fancy drink place, but when someone asks what you recommend, make them something you make well. My next drink was a rum and coke, which was better, but still not good, and I again had to wait for the bartenders attention. I got the impression the bartender really didn't know what she was doing. Prices were kind of high for the Area and service as well, I paid 20, including tip, for 3 drinks, 1 "long beach", and 2 rum and cokes. Nomad gets 5 stars from me for their generosity and dog friendly patio. We held our 2010 Valentines Day fundraiser for Love-A-Bull here and it was a blast. The fine and generous folks at Nomad concocted a special mixed drink especially for us, "Pittie Punch", with all the proceeds from the sale of this drink going to Love-A-Bull. There was a Pittie Kissing Booth and a merch table loaded with L-A-B swag - love my new Hello Pittie T-shirt! Great dog-friendly patio with heaters and SWEET TEA VODKA! Even if I did not like this bar I would give them 4 stars for welcoming over 60 Pit Bulls and their well behaved humans! read more
