We moved across the country this summer and needed some extra space to store items that wouldn't fit in our condo. Pros: In reading reviews online and looking at prices, it appeared that Extra Space Storage in Arlington was a good value in the area. I received a phone call from them after I filled out the online forms via the website, and the staff was pleasant. Moving our things in was not an issue - the loading dock is not unreasonably busy and there are carts available most of the time. Cons: The only complaint I have about the facility itself is that the elevators are inconsistent, one of two seems to be offline more often than not. Unfortunately, after 3 months, we received a postcard in the mail telling us that our rate would be increasing about $100 a month. When I spoke with staff I was told the internet rate was merely "promotional." I'm sure there is something in the fine print I missed online, so this is a "buyer beware" for anyone else thinking the facility is a solid value proposition. Once you get in, be prepared to see your rates rise exponentially & rapidly. read more

Overall the unit/building cleanliness was good. They have some dollies available to use which is helpful. Biggest issue was the major rate increase 2-3 months after putting are stuff in there. SHORT STORY: Paying and letting this establishment destroy my things and paying upwards of about $400 (FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A 10x10 SPACE!) a month for them to do it over the span of four years is my biggest regret. And not a thing, nor a cent, recovered. Not only were all my things CRUSTED ALL OVER in mouse/rat feces and urine - to the point where it wasn't medically safe to enter the unit without a hazmat suit on - but...the manager KNEW ABOUT IT!!! LONGER STORY: I think it's reasonable to trust the management enough to assume my things would be in okay shape for a couple months without stopping by to check. WRONG. Thousands of dollars' worth of keepsakes, furniture, clothing, photos, etc., had been completely doused in mouse urine and covered in feces. The sight and smell were enough to make you start retching violently. Seriously. See the pictures. I called several times over the course of about 10 days to speak with the manager, Carmen, as she wouldn't return any of my phone calls. Finally, when she gets handed the phone, she clearly begins audibly shaking as I explain my concerns. However, she rigidly maintains that I should take care of all this, even when I further explain that I have a medical condition (which I do) that would preclude me from doing any of these onerous tasks (even though a healthy adult would need a hazmat suit and proper equipment to enter the vermin-ridden unit). Also, mind you, all I asked for from Carmen was that our contract be terminated and for a few select items to be cleaned and returned to me - that's it. This is a VERY small ask, considering the incredible amount of damage that went on under her management, and that I could run her into the ground for. When I ask her about how "Every building at Extra Space Storage is treated for pests and rodents each month by Truly Nolen, dedicated pest control experts since 1938" - she pauses for a beat, then asks, "Where did you see that?" I SAW IT ON YOUR WEBSITE!!! Literally, it was right there, under their FAQs. (I believe they've since taken it down.) She wasn't even aware of which pest control company supposedly (I'm assuming doesn't) visit her every month?! Gee, that's telling... clearly, they don't service the facility; the management has never even met them, they've never even HEARD OF THEM! Then, the following exchange occurs (I made sure to get it down, word for word): Carmen: Well, there was another unit in the same area that had the same problem. Me: WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ANYONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Carmen: Well, most people don't like to hear about that sort of thing. Me: I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE IT! THOSE ARE MY THINGS! Carmen: Well, many people don't have the same opinion as you. Would you want to know if someone's unit near yours was, say, leaking a substance into your unit that would gash your things and chemically burn your skin to the touch? I could bet the money I wasted on this hellhole for four years on the management at this facility never breathing a word about it to you, because you "wouldn't like hearing about it." But, of course, you'd be perfectly happy with all your things being destroyed and wasted away. Right? BOTTOM LINE: Carmen should be fired and only accepted for hire at a woodsy, suburban waste management center where she can make friends with the vermin she meets along her route, or get on the learning track to make a name for herself in Petco's rodent care facilities. As for this Extra Space Storage facility, it should be demolished, burned, whatever needs to be done to eradicate it from this earth. If it ever gets another Carmen, they shouldn't be a Carmen. They should be a diligent, caring owner(s) with a bent toward hospitality and cleanliness. And transparency. And just plain not being a complete, contemptible a*hole to your customers. Prospective customers: Run. Just run. Run, run, run. Again, look at the pictures. Run. This is not a drill. Run! read more

Infestation has been getting notably worse. In 2017 I noticed my books were getting nibbled by mice, which I immediately brought to the attention of the management. In 2018 the mouse problem seemed to have stabilized(not solved, but not getting worse), but in 2019 the problem suddenly appears to be getting notably worse. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR BUSINESS. In short, Extra Space Storage told us we could unload our belongings from a moving Pod, then changed the story multiple times, ultimately forcing us to go elsewhere after causing us to incur additional expense and making it impossible to do business with them. My family needed storage during a move from out of state. When we visited this Extra Space Storage office during a house-hunting trip, a wonderfully charming woman named Sarah helped us reserve a unit and told us that our moving plans, which included a moving Pod, would be fine. Other than being a little troubled by their requirement that renters be fingerprinted -- a policy that goes unmentioned until they put the ink in front of you and that I have never encountered at other businesses, let alone other storage facilities -- we felt reassured that we had made a good decision. Boy, were we fooled. The day before our move, we called Extra Space to check that everything was all set, at which point an employee named Walt told us that we would have to have our Pod picked up the same day it was delivered and unloaded. Having not been warned about this policy but trying to comply, we called PODS to see if that was even possible and made last-minute changes to our arrangements. A little while later, after we had rescheduled our Pod pick-up to adhere to Extra Space's policy, Walt called back, having suddenly and inexplicably changed his story: No, he said, you can't bring a Pod here at all. He gave a couple of weak explanations, arguing first that it would be "a conflict of interests" because PODS is their competitor and then that the Pod wouldn't fit. When we pointed out the flaws in his arguments and asked, more importantly, why he had told us a different policy earlier, he offered no explanation. Frustrated, we told him to cancel our contract. Later that day, Walt called and changed his story again, saying we could use a Pod as long as we had it picked up the same day. We decided to give Extra Space another chance, rescheduling the Pod delivery and movers for a month later -- the next time we would be in the area -- at additional expense to us. A week after the debacle with Walt, we called to check in, and a manager named Jose said Walt no longer worked there and that the story had changed once again: No Pods allowed. When we told Jose to cancel our contract, he said we would then have to come remove the lock on the still-empty unit ourselves before the next day or be charged another month's rent -- quite a feat when the keys are hundreds of miles away! Jose offered no help, saying he could maybe give us an extra day (though not mentioning they don't charge late fees for five days according to the contract) but that he couldn't just cut the lock. Turns out he can, if we sign paperwork authorizing him to do so -- which we found out after we called back and pointedly asked about their policy if you lose the keys. After all that trouble, Jose said he would give us a refund, but it looks like we're receiving just 1/9th of our money back. We're so sick of dealing with them we aren't even going to contest it. read more
