mice/rat urine and feces all over my belongings/the floor/EVERYWHERE
    Elizabeth S.

SHORT STORY: Paying and letting this establishment destroy my things and paying upwards of about $400 (FOUR HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A 10x10 SPACE!) a month for them to do it over the span of four years is my biggest regret. And not a thing, nor a cent, recovered. Not only were all my things CRUSTED ALL OVER in mouse/rat feces and urine - to the point where it wasn't medically safe to enter the unit without a hazmat suit on - but...the manager KNEW ABOUT IT!!! LONGER STORY: I think it's reasonable to trust the management enough to assume my things would be in okay shape for a couple months without stopping by to check. WRONG. Thousands of dollars' worth of keepsakes, furniture, clothing, photos, etc., had been completely doused in mouse urine and covered in feces. The sight and smell were enough to make you start retching violently. Seriously. See the pictures. I called several times over the course of about 10 days to speak with the manager, Carmen, as she wouldn't return any of my phone calls. Finally, when she gets handed the phone, she clearly begins audibly shaking as I explain my concerns. However, she rigidly maintains that I should take care of all this, even when I further explain that I have a medical condition (which I do) that would preclude me from doing any of these onerous tasks (even though a healthy adult would need a hazmat suit and proper equipment to enter the vermin-ridden unit). Also, mind you, all I asked for from Carmen was that our contract be terminated and for a few select items to be cleaned and returned to me - that's it. This is a VERY small ask, considering the incredible amount of damage that went on under her management, and that I could run her into the ground for. When I ask her about how "Every building at Extra Space Storage is treated for pests and rodents each month by Truly Nolen, dedicated pest control experts since 1938" - she pauses for a beat, then asks, "Where did you see that?" I SAW IT ON YOUR WEBSITE!!! Literally, it was right there, under their FAQs. (I believe they've since taken it down.) She wasn't even aware of which pest control company supposedly (I'm assuming doesn't) visit her every month?! Gee, that's telling... clearly, they don't service the facility; the management has never even met them, they've never even HEARD OF THEM! Then, the following exchange occurs (I made sure to get it down, word for word): Carmen: Well, there was another unit in the same area that had the same problem. Me: WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ANYONE ANYTHING ABOUT IT? Carmen: Well, most people don't like to hear about that sort of thing. Me: I DON'T CARE IF SOMEONE DOESN'T LIKE IT! THOSE ARE MY THINGS! Carmen: Well, many people don't have the same opinion as you. Would you want to know if someone's unit near yours was, say, leaking a substance into your unit that would gash your things and chemically burn your skin to the touch? I could bet the money I wasted on this hellhole for four years on the management at this facility never breathing a word about it to you, because you "wouldn't like hearing about it." But, of course, you'd be perfectly happy with all your things being destroyed and wasted away. Right? BOTTOM LINE: Carmen should be fired and only accepted for hire at a woodsy, suburban waste management center where she can make friends with the vermin she meets along her route, or get on the learning track to make a name for herself in Petco's rodent care facilities. As for this Extra Space Storage facility, it should be demolished, burned, whatever needs to be done to eradicate it from this earth. If it ever gets another Carmen, they shouldn't be a Carmen. They should be a diligent, caring owner(s) with a bent toward hospitality and cleanliness. And transparency. And just plain not being a complete, contemptible a*hole to your customers. Prospective customers: Run. Just run. Run, run, run. Again, look at the pictures. Run. This is not a drill. Run!

Customer service had no comment. Perhaps because it was a mouse. And also because it was dead.

The manager told me that if I was ever in the area that I could park there and run my errands. Great perk, right? Not so much when you get back to your car and they called and had it towed. $135 to get it back. The tow company confirmed that it was indeed an employee of Extra Space Storage who called and had the car towed. Thanks! There are a lot of other storage options in the area. Perhaps I interrupted her break? She seemed really irritated by the one question I asked in response to her asking me if I had any questions, rolling her eyes and mumbling under her breath openly throughout our entire interaction. In the middle of the process of me renting a storage space, she literally ran out of the store to yell at someone that she thought was about to park nearby. I thought about ducking out right then but honestly I was afraid she'd chase me down yelling too. Predictably, when the charges hit my card 2 days later it was a different price than I was quoted by Selam. I returned to the store with my contract and the paperwork printed and signed in that very location showing the discrepancy, only to be told by a large bearded kid behind the desk that he "was only a part-time employee" and that he "couldn't help me." Wild!

Free use of the truck is likely not a genuine offer. I went there on three different occasions in the last couple of weeks, as a new customer seeking to use their van for 90 minutes to move two large items, and each time visited on a weekday when I knew the trucks were unlikely to be in use. Each and every time the front desk put me off for a different reason--i.e., you have your driver license but you don't have the $100 "cash deposit" that's required, or you don't have the "account number" that was issued via email (despite my having government issued ID plus the key to the unit and their having computers at the desk), or it's "too late in the day" at 3 pm to use a van for 90 minutes. I went there again today, very hopeful that I had met every hurdle, and this time they told me there was a charge of $39.95 to use the van for the brief period I needed, plus gas (and whatever incidentals they may impose on top of that). The reason given this time was that 4 days had elapsed beyond my initial 30-day move-in period. I pointed out that I had visited on three different occasions in my initial move-in period, and noted that the deadline and all of these other hurdles to use of the van should have been disclosed upfront, as the deadline hadn't been disclosed earlier and seemed like a trap for the unwary. The man at the Shirlington desk blamed his colleague for being "new" and not knowing to tell me all the van requirements up front. He rarely looked me in the eye from his seated position at the desk, and, knowing that he almost certainly was the one who had trained his "new" colleague, I advised him that I'd rent a van from U-haul instead. He protested that Cubesmart offered a better deal on truck rentals. Floored by this response (after viewing the enormous ads posted everywhere around the facdility that promise use of a free truck), I told him that I'd be moving all of my items out of the Shirlington unit at the end of the month. Unfazed, he advised me that I'd better have moved everything out by my announced move-out date. Shirlington customer service reps need much better training, or CubeSmart needs to change its corporate policies.

We had a dedicated elevator, yet workers often brought items down only one or two at a time. I also saw team members on their phones or standing around in rooms and hallways instead of actively moving things. These delays added up quickly. The crew also misplaced parts of our bed frame, and the pieces had to be found before it could be reassembled. That alone added nearly an hour to the move. Because the move took much longer than expected, the final cost was significantly higher than the estimate we received. We were also charged based on an arrival time that was recorded as ten minutes earlier than when the crew actually arrived. The team was courteous, but given the inefficiency, added time, and higher final price, we would not use Bookstore Movers again. This is unfortunate, because we had been happy with them in previous moves.

So we had to wait a bit. We sat in the rented Uhaul waiting for about ten minutes. When we went back into the store front the lady at the desk proceeded to show us the unit that was available. As we went through the side door and proceeded to walk, with her leading the way, she suddenly started putting down the company because, apparently yesterday was the first day the company was switching to "no cash transactions". She was very angry and threw her hands up and said mean things about the company. Neither of us said I'd a word during her rant. But, then she looked at me and realized that I was wearing a mask. OMG!! She lost it. "What you got that mask on for", she asked. I replied, "to protect myself". Well she didn't like that answer and she started ranting on in a very aggressive and threatening manner about what my beliefs were. She said that I believe all the those bitches and MF's in the White House. She went on to call the names of, Nancy Palosi and president Biden and referred to all those white devils in congress feed us all the lies about Covid. She went on to exclaim how stupid I was for believing that shit. Those are her words not mine. She literally attacked me for m beliefs. She ranted with such aggressiveness that both of us were speechless. She used so much foul language. It was beyond unprofessional. It was worthy of a street fight. She did not stop with the insults until she opened the unit to show us what it looked like. Needless to say we did not rent a unit there. We went to another company all together. I would never recommend anyone going there. In fact, I can't imagine why she would have a position dealing with the public period. It was a very horrible experience. I'll definitely be spreading the word to all that will listen.

I stopped by the unit this morning to give it a look before our shippers arrived. The first thing that stood out to me was that the automated process through the app was amazing! I made a few simple setup requirements and wallah when I pulled up I was able to open the gate and door with the push of a button. I pulled through and pulled up the map they gave me. They had a blue tie on the unit to keep folks out and already had my locks and what not waiting for me. I gathered my things and left so that I could meet my shippers. I forgot to lock the unit and although nothing was in it they reached out to me to make sure it was me that had visited the unit. They even placed another blue lock on it so no one would bother it until we returned. Upon returning the process was efficient and the movers were able to drive in and out. Public Storage in Arlington is 5 star. The ventilation was great and the service was even better.

Used to be pretty great and now it's meh/good and very expensive. I'm going to break down the good…read moreand the bad and everything in between by categories. PRICING First got a unit here right towards the beginning of pandemic. Prices were very reasonable. I think we paid around $120-130 a month for our particular unit size. Having emptied our unit and closed our account last month, our bill for the same unit had gone up to around $330 a month. Absolutely ridiculous. No justification was ever given for the repeated price hikes but at this point the pricing is outrageous. If you threaten to leave you might get a temporary price break but honestly, the amount by which the price has more than doubled in four years is extreme. SERVICE When we first got our unit there if you had an issue and called their number you'd reach someone at the office and with their call ID system they immediately knew it was you calling. It was great. Now it's the phone tree from hell and nobody ever picks up the phone live. Leave enough messages and maybe someone will call you back eventually. Also, the hours posted online correspond to the facility, not the office, and the office doesn't really follow reliable hours. Went there in the middle of a Sunday, when it always used to be open, and there was nobody there. FACILITY I appreciate they seem to have taken measures to make it more secure. At one point during our tenure there they seem to have had a troubling situation with one employee, and some locks that were un-secured, but now it's pretty straight forward and you take your lock with you when you're done. I also like that it's moved from a simple code - which anyone could get - to a bluetooth via app based system that only works if you're logged into your account via the app. It might be a little slower to open gates but at least in theory it's harder for people without an account to gain access to the facility. There are plenty of carts to use for hauling stuff and the elevators and hallways are easy enough to navigate, though it may take you a visit or two to get your full bearings depending on where your unit is. Sometimes the parking situation inside gets iffy, but I was never not able to get done what I needed to. They also seem to be taking their climate control more seriously. When we first started there if you went in the summer you'd have a hard time understanding what exactly was climate controlled about the place because it was so hot and humid. Now the temperature seems very well regulated. I did find a very small amount of rodent droppings in my unit, but I assume that's standard in most storage places, and none of my items appeared damaged. OVERALL What holds me back from recommending this facility are the pricing and the seemingly inaccessible customer service. I can't justify the massive price increases and pairing that with an impossible to reach main office. If they were to address these things, the facility is otherwise fine for its purposes.
