Bad experience with Cubesmart-Shirlington. Facillity is clean, albeit expensive, but they promise "free" move-in truck as an inducement to rent there. Free use of the truck is likely not a genuine offer. I went there on three different occasions in the last couple of weeks, as a new customer seeking to use their van for 90 minutes to move two large items, and each time visited on a weekday when I knew the trucks were unlikely to be in use. Each and every time the front desk put me off for a different reason--i.e., you have your driver license but you don't have the $100 "cash deposit" that's required, or you don't have the "account number" that was issued via email (despite my having government issued ID plus the key to the unit and their having computers at the desk), or it's "too late in the day" at 3 pm to use a van for 90 minutes. I went there again today, very hopeful that I had met every hurdle, and this time they told me there was a charge of $39.95 to use the van for the brief period I needed, plus gas (and whatever incidentals they may impose on top of that). The reason given this time was that 4 days had elapsed beyond my initial 30-day move-in period. I pointed out that I had visited on three different occasions in my initial move-in period, and noted that the deadline and all of these other hurdles to use of the van should have been disclosed upfront, as the deadline hadn't been disclosed earlier and seemed like a trap for the unwary. The man at the Shirlington desk blamed his colleague for being "new" and not knowing to tell me all the van requirements up front. He rarely looked me in the eye from his seated position at the desk, and, knowing that he almost certainly was the one who had trained his "new" colleague, I advised him that I'd rent a van from U-haul instead. He protested that Cubesmart offered a better deal on truck rentals. Floored by this response (after viewing the enormous ads posted everywhere around the facdility that promise use of a free truck), I told him that I'd be moving all of my items out of the Shirlington unit at the end of the month. Unfazed, he advised me that I'd better have moved everything out by my announced move-out date. Shirlington customer service reps need much better training, or CubeSmart needs to change its corporate policies. read more

That was the time it took for me to sign the lease, find that my lock wouldn't fit, leave to get another one and drive back. When I returned with all of my boxes to put in storage, I realized that I hadn't inspected the storage unit. Since I was more concerned with the size of the unit, as soon as Zach (a manager) showed me a few options, I quickly signed up. When I returned and started to move in I noticed piles of mouse droppings all around the perimeter of the unit walls! I had to turn on my flashlight to see because the lighting in the unit isn't great. I immediately removed my things and left. I called the after hours number and cancelled my lease. I wish I'd read the reviews and not wasted my time. Since this place clearly has a pest issue it's interesting that one of the other workers (Aiden) bragged that others have moved to THIS location due to rats at OTHER storage facilities. So that was either a BLATANT LIE or he is negligently unaware that the place where he works is just as dirty. SMH. I'm actually glad the office was closed when I got back because I might have been convinced to move to other unit. However, this level of infestation is definitely throughout the building. I have no idea why this place has 5-star reviews. The true reviews are scattered but they're RECENT. Do your homework and AVOID THIS PLACE. read more

If you enjoy being trapped for hours in a pitch-black elevator with no ventilation or communication with the outside world, this is the place for you! That happened to me, and while the power outage was due to a storm, what happened before and after was pure negligence by Cubesmart. First of all, the elevator displayed an inspection certificate that expired seven years earlier. A nearby elevator had the certificate ripped off the wall. (See photos.) The emergency communication system, which is required by law, did not work. There was also no emergency phone number in the elevator. The only toilet in the building was out of order for days (see the photo). There were alarms and lights for failed fire pumps going for days (see photo). As other reviewers have pointed out, there is also a serious problem with rats and mice in the building. This, coupled with management that doesn't give a f*ck about customer safety is reason to go somewhere else to store your precious stuff. I have spent about $10,000 storing stuff at Cubesmart over the past four years, and have written positive reviews about another location, but this one is an awful place. read more

After storing my belongings at this location for two years at considerable expense, I moved out recently only to find tons of mouse droppings and the corpses of three mice in my unit. The staff member I spoke with said that he would file a incident report and that I should look to the insurance policy I purchased from Cubesmart to get compensated for any damage to my property. He even mentioned that management at this location had been changed a year ago because they weren't doing proper pest control. I filed my claim, only to find out that Cubesmart's "protection" doesn't cover rodent damage of any kind. So I'm left picking up the cost of professionally cleaning my damaged upholstered furniture. I think it is completely unacceptable behavior for a company to claim to provide clean, controlled environments for the storage of belongings and then provide no compensation whatsoever to renters when they fail to live up to that promise. read more

Personally saw a rat inside my unit after visiting after 8 months, in addition to lots of rat droppings. Extremely frustrating, as I had been expecting a generally clean facility with robust pest control if required, after moving out of a pest-free 18th floor apartment. Am simply storing furniture, electronics, clothing and kitchenware inside the unit. Additionally, local or regional management failed to reply to my inquiry as promised, and had to leave the state to return to work. I am still left wondering what will be done to remedy the situation. The idea of rats rummaging through all my boxes and items sucks, to say the least. To top it off, prices have increased across the board as well. If I had any indication that this storage facility had pest issues, I would have never rented this storage unit. read more

Horrific and extensive rodent damage. I'm active military and I returned to my unit after a two year absence to find my belongings destroyed by rodents. Droppings everywhere, boxes chewed up, furniture and bags stained, evidence that rodents had nested and burrowed in my unit. The management said they had received reports of this "a while ago" on several other units but the issue went away. Well I was never informed, and whichever units the rodents got chased away from they all clearly went into mine. Since uncovering this issue the management has comped me 3 months of storage, additional actions "pending assessment of damage," but since that conversation has been frustratingly slow to respond. If you store here be prepared to do your own pest control, and be prepared to be proactive in chasing down correspondence from management. read more

Yes the facility looks modern and new and in most part is very clean. My issues ...1) the auto doors and elevators seemed to be always not working or damaged, out of order. This left me feeling insecure about having access to my stuff when necessary. 2) The on site people are their to help and are not interested in helping your needs problems or concerns. They are focused on selling units and ask you to use the on-line customer service loop help to nowhere. The local manager left me a voice mail to call him ... an issues with my card payment on file. I immediately called him twice left messages ... no response. I drove to the facility the following day (Monday)and asked onsite person in the office to help me resolve the issue... he denied my request and melted down into a psychotic screaming tantrum that was really shocking. I contacted customer service and made arrangements to cancel and move out immediately. They did that, and were apologetic etc and promised a manager would follow up ...it never happened. I've moved out and down the street, to a less expensive facility, an adult manager lives on site and returns and answers the phone and follows up totally professionally ...couldn't be happier ... sorry .... I will never use Cubesmart SS again ... nightmare! read more

when I first moved into Cube Smart, it was a great deal. I had had a horrible experience with "public storage" after their latest fire, seemingly targeting the building I was in and had to go through the abhorrent practices of the insurance company which tried it's best not to pay. But what began is a great experience at Cube Smart has now turned into a funky deal. The elevators do not work at times when I need to access my units which are on upper level floors. And when you scan the code to call someone thinking that you're going to get assistance , they just tell you that nobody's going to be there until 930 and even if you only need access to the stairs, they are not sending anyone out there to help you access your belongings when they know there is a dysfunction going on at the site. To me, this is very poor customer service, and That's how I feel about not being able to get to my property after I paid my money and we have a contract. I have no idea why the elevators don't work, but it's happened twice in one week for me and I don't even go to storage every day. It's not like I can take my things out of the three storage units I'm currently contracted for and I'm sure that if I don't pay my storage money, they will sell my stuff, but what is my recourse as a customer in good standing who can't access the property that I'm storing on your property per our contract? read more

Security Self Storage was bought out by cubesmart with no notice to me, cluster *uck of an operation. Very poor customer service. The local number doesn't ring to the store directly unless you hit the phone menu. Looks like they raised prices. They are very quick to sell your shit and charge exorbitant lien fees if you're late. Not a money thing, just storage really isn't a priority thing, haha. Security Self Storage was very flexible. Now that COVID is here, I'll be moving to a security self storage location and they will have to give me warm and fuzzies they won't be selling the that location to these asshats for a while. Save your self the trouble and avoid future problems by avoiding Cubesmart altogether. Its sort of an oxymoron, not much smart about them. On a positive note, the local manager was nice. read more

Feels safe and secure, well maintained generally, with good climate control, however there are mice here. I only stored some unused household items here- no food; no furniture; nothing that would have attracted mice; and there were a number of mice droppings in my unit after 6 months. To their credit this is not an easily avoidable problem at any self storage. Would recommend securing everything in plastic air tight bins. read more

This review is being written before move-out, however move-in experience was simply wonderful! The manager and employees are so helpful, friendly, and seem to truly care about their job. They make an effort to remember your name, and do what they can to make sure you get what you need. (Ex: Reserved a smaller space and knew it was going to be too small after looking at it, so they showed me two other spaces without issue! No eye-rolling, annoyed reactions, etc) The Free ($10 after fees) truck rental is a HUGE perk, try to take advantage if you can! The whole facility was clean, and well-taken care of. Can't say enough good things. I also purchased boxes from them and they came with pre-cut handles which makes a huge difference. Only Negative: don't buy their packing tape. It's cheap as hell and doesn't stay in the dispenser. read more

The staff was extremely helpful and ensured we understood everything about the facility and our storage unit. The manager allowed us to look at different units and pick the one we liked best! Would have gone three or even four stars for them, but I can't in good conscience. I didn't have any issues during my 9 months there. I knew going in there were reviews stating they arbitrarily go up on their monthly rates on a whim. I was hoping it would be a year before that happened. But not even 9 months in I get a notice that basically says "yeah, you're rates are going up next month and we're letting you know." I was already paying $158 a month for 10x10. There was no justification as to why....just gonna be going up deal with it. So, that's a huge no go not providing a reason, and two ITS A GODDAMN PANDEMIC. People are suffering from lots of things but especially being laid off or having to stay home with their children, and this company is completely out of touch raising fees on people. I am fortunate to be in the military so I have steady income, but this could break someone less fortunate. I was also thankful I had already closed on a home and it worked out perfectly. Backed up to the place loaded my stuff on a uhaul then closed my account before another payment was required. I was fortunate, but you may not be so consider wisely before you commit. Also, oddly, someone spilled paint in front of one of the elevators and it was there the entire time I cleared out my rental unit with no effort to be cleaned. And when I closed my account, the manager asks ME what he's supposed to do about that like I did it?!?! I made it clear he should consider other options cuz blaming me wasn't it. SMH. read more

Rented a unit in July. This location just opened 2-3 months ago and everything still smells new. Front desk staff was very helpful and polite and professional. Elevator doors close slow for some reason (but are quick otherwise). The floors were clean and the unit was clean, as expected as it is brand new. Locks cost $17. Their current promotion makes your first month completely free no matter how short or long you plan to keep the unit for. But they do charge ~13 insurance and ~20 one time admin fee. read more

We continue to experience great customer service at this location. Several months ago we rented a small locker. Recently we decided to upgrade to a larger unit in anticipation of moving. The helpful employee on staff showed us several different options. We selected one unit but as soon as we got home realized it would not be big enough. We returned to Cube Smart and the same employee happily changed all our paperwork for the larger unit. He was so accommodating and easy to work with and got us a great deal.
