Look... I was helping a senior friend of mine in a rough financial spot clear out his storage unit at this place... My older friend was a long time customer here, and said the manager, JASON PARR, who knew him by name and face. Well.. he delivered poor business/customer service today let me tell you... After paying what little cash he had for a months worth of storage on a freaking closet size unit ($70, ridiculous price for space by the way), he was there for 72 hours when I offered to help him clear it out so that he could stop a needless monthly payment. ANGELA BECK assistant manager claimed she had no power to reimburse any of the cash payment made for 72 hours of storage. lol BS. They absolutely have the power by the way, all management does (if you can take a payment, you can make a payment). She advised me to call for my friend the next day, today, to speak with manager JASON PARR for a "slim chance" he would do it. More evidence mind you refunds are completely do able. So with his robot answers from corporate, he explained how he couldn't help because they pro-rate for future storage but wont give money back. HA, please.... What is this AIG? We take your money but will never give it back, no exceptions? Sorry but good business doesn't work that way. Especially not in a little town, where people know your name, and you're working with the elderly? Come on guys! Ive been treated better at a Oakland McDonald's... seriously.This is completely garbage business ethics. Do you think their corporate office is going to fire/reprimand a "manager" for doing customer service to long time customer? Seriously? We are talking about $20 or $30 bucks, that's it!... and not a credit card mind you, simply a cash transaction. You know the saddest part? I explained calmly in person and on the phone to JASON and his some how all assistant management team standing around lol, that this seemed to be poor business to me and my friend and that with yelp and review sites being heavily utilized they were playing a risky customer retention game. Clean, seemingly safe, but not necessarily well secured. My experience was more frustrating than the other reviewer. I checked out extra storage because it was much less expensive than near by alternatives (High St bridge/A1 storage/coliseum storage). Larger units (5x5 and bigger) have big steel doors, but the smaller unit I saw inside was a dinky wooden door. I think the big driver in price between this place (and similar places like public storage) and the higher priced ones on high street is that the more expensive have an alarm on every unit. The staff was not very friendly though, and when I asked about break-ins and security, she was stand-offish, not directly answering my questions and turning it on me: "Have you had problems with security before?" Given that its Alameda, I figure its okay, but I never did get a straight answer. Regardless, I was all set to sign up, but there computer system was having issues giving me the price they had quoted me over the phone. After 20 minutes waiting and being told I would have to sign the contract for a higher than originally quoted price (where they would later adjust the price to the cheaper quote), I decided to walk away. I don't think they were trying to pull any funny business, but just having issues with their computer system. However, the place is clean, has a good access hours, and is well priced. read more

My experience with the space, location, security, and service were all fine (that's why they get 2 stars instead of 1). However... Just as others are saying, they get you in with reasonable rates, then raise your rate as often as possible, as outlined in your contract. Of course, we all signed our contracts, so it's not like they did something they weren't legally allowed to do. However, just because you CAN raise rates doesn't mean you should. The raising of rates is exactly why I got out as soon as I could. I moved out this week and I will not rent from Extra Space ever again. read more

Sadly, I'm having to downgrade my previous review because of the difficulties I encountered closing out our account. We were told that if we were unable to vacate the unit by the end of our monthly rental the rent would be prorated for the month. Well this was not so. We paid for the next full month but when we emptied the unit we did not receive a refund. They claimed that it is in the lease that they don't refund any of the rent but this is not what was stated on the phone. I would recommend that you get every claim from them in writing, that was our mistake. read more

Rent goes UP & UP & UP & UP EVERY 6 months or LESS! And it's NOT SECURE! The units are HOT in the summer and WET after rain. Theres barb wire on the parameter fence- to the end and HEY! No barb wire! Easy access! If you do plan to rent here -GET INSURANCE! Then take pictures of your unit walls, then take them again after you get ripped off because the footprints are obvious from THIEVES climbing over the walls. It may not look possible but it is! There used to be locks on the exterior doors to each hall -no more! I called their main office when the price is raised a third time in 4 months- they offered me $5. Off REALLY? Been here since 1998 and you can't cut me a break? I give notice & they offer me the SAME size unit- across the hall- for the price before the 3rd hike. SO I HAVE TO MOVE ALL MY SHIT ACROSS THE HALL? Since I did my last review the rent has gone up at least 3 times. It is now $143 per month. Nothing has really changed at the facility. I don't see any new or extra security. It looks basically the same as when I first got my unit. The only reason I stay at this facility is due to the convenience for me. Just want people to be aware that you will get a great price in the beginning but it doesn't last for very long. I have another storage unit with a different company and have been there 15 years with only 2 price increase in all of those years. If it wasn't so far away I would move my things to that company. There really isn't any reason for so many increases. They are taking advantage of people who need local, convenient storage. read more

I have been a "member " of Extra Space Storage for almost 5 years. Recently, I was finally able to get rid of a lot of stuff & downsize to a smaller unit. The staff were amazing. They took me to check out different units to see which one would suit ME best, not the company. Tasha was great at explaining the whole process (including all fees) and was very patient with me. Overall, the place is clean & secure. I'm not giving it 5 stars though due to the pricing. The rates can potentially increase several times over a 12 month period, so that has been very frustrating. But the staff are the jewels of the business: friendly, professional, & very, very patient. read more

Never thought the staff at this location were helpful or on top of things (except with collecting rents). Always seemed like you were bothering them or asking for a special favor whenever you needed anything. What you've heard about them raising rents after you move in is true, so be sure to factor that in if you are renting a place here for more than a few months. In fact, before you rent a place, you should try to negotiate better rates than what you get quoted on the website, at least for the first month or two, since those rates will go up anyways. There are plenty of storage places in Alameda, so don't be afraid to negotiate. I wish i did. This storage place is an absolute gold mine for whoever owns it. Probably why the service is nothing to write home about. They don't even have to try. For the ladies, I recommend bringing some sort of personal alarm device with you or going with a companion if you visit during non-peak hours. The place has gates, but there isn't a single access point, since the property is divided into separate sections with different entrances. Alameda is generally safe, but this place is surrounded by abandoned buildings with graffiti and easy to climb chain link fences. It's also right next to a huge abandoned lot. The outside is lit okay, but they need more lighting and security cameras on the inside, since even a kid could climb over their fence. Management should install a main gate closer to the street so that all of their units can be accessed and patrolled from a single entry point. This is the general setup for all the other storage units in Alameda and Oakland. Decided to move to a family-owned storage place down the street. Hassle in the short-term, but absolutely worth it in the long-run. read more

I would give no stars if I could, we have been renting from this place for ten years. It has changed hands & names and the service level has dropped considerably. We were trying to consolidate 2 spaces, took the lock off one to swap for the other and didn't replace it. The very next day, they rented it out, even though we have paid for it for another 2+ weeks. They won't give us our money back and they won't give us our space back. I'm fuming. Don't waste your money here, they will take advantage of you at every opportunity, I.e., huge increases in rent. It really is a bait-and-switch model of doing business. As soon as you're settled, the rates go up, seems like about 14% every 6 months or so. This place is fine for holding your things a few weeks between moves, but if you want to be happily settled in your new home with a little permanent offsite storage, don't try to do that here. read more

Beware of this company, they lure you in with reasonable rates and then VERY quickly raise them. I opened an account in June 2010, it is now June 2011 and I have had the rates increase by approx 15% twice already. (once in August 2010 and once in April 2011). Neither time was I notified by mail, only by a phone call after the fact that my account had not been paid in full. Neither time did I receive any notification, even though they said they had sent it; but eventually realized they did not include my unit #. I asked twice to have this rectified, but it has not been done yet. I called today and the manager said that I was given the 'street' rate and until it gets back to the 'normal' rate, it will continue to increase. He also said, after two years, the rate of increase will 'slow'. So basically, you will continue to pay what they dictate as the 'normal' rate and have to deal with increases. I am out of this place as soon as possible as there are several options in the area. I recommend getting a written commitment of rates when you sign up if you choose to go with them. Also, their on line payment system is dreadfully slow. We've paid online several times and they have not received payment for up to 7 business days. As far as a review of the facility, the units are okay, not top of the line, but not bottom of the barrel either. Basically the walls and doors are painted plywood with a lock on them. Easy forced open if need be. I've actually never seen a security person patrolling, but there are numerous cameras. Access is easy for bringing items in and out of units though. read more

The reviews that state they raise rates unconscionably are correct. From July 2014 to July 2016 the rate on my unit went up from $135/month to $173/month. This is just over a 28% increase over two years, or 14%/year. Meanwhile, inflation has been virtually non-existent during this period. Their excuse on the phone today was that they have raised the rates for my size unit for everyone by the same amount. In other words, consistent lowballing is their standard business plan. read more

I had my storage facility with Extra space from July 2005 until May 2010.... When I first got the unit the people were friendly and helpful. By the end they were rude and condescending... The first year it cost me around $60 a month and in the end it was $161 a month.... all of my things were moldy and wet and I decided that it just didn't matter anymore because my things were ruined. Needless to say I stopped paying for it, they cleaned out my unit and sold all of my things. Now they have sent me to collections stating that I owe them almost $600. They are not a good company, and I would suggest that if you need to store something to find somewhere else to do so. read more

To give you a full picture of this company I rented from extra storage space in Berkeley before moving my stuff to Alameda. While I was a customer in Berkeley my 10x10 storage unit fees increased around 11% every 6-9 months. When I moved my stuff out I was paying $349 per month! So I moved to Alameda not realizing that the scam these guys are running comes down from corporate. I started with $109 per month for an 8x8 which I felt was a good price after paying $349. I told the site manager about my problems in Berkeley and he suggested I sign a one year lease so that I could lock in the price. Right away they started charging me $119 a month with a story about insurance that of course I wasn't told about up front. They said if I had my own renters insurance policy they could remove the insurance fee. I get my policy, scan it, email it, call 3-4 times and finally the insurance fee is removed. Then 3-4 months go by and they start charging me $119 again. I called in and the manager said this was a normal increase. I explained that he had suggested, and I had agreed, to a one year lease to avoid at least a year of charge increases. He then said to me " That's just the cost of doin business" I was in disbelief at this point, frustrated and angry. I stopped in the office a few weeks later and the manager had been let go or quit and someone was there taking care of things in the interim. I vented my frustrations to him and he took care of the overcharge for now. But soon the increases will come again and he said there is a ceiling but he doesn't really know where it is. So expect to pay 10-20 percent a year more to store your junk every year. As one yelper suggested, "save yourself a hell of a lot of money and just throw it all in a dumpster"! read more

Ohh myy. I admit of having a storage unit with this storage location but once I return from out of state I definitely will be in full "ape shit" effect on this gem. My gullable family member had taken care of items for me, so sad she had to get grinded literally. The employees here are nice, collecting money is always a fine tune. The place is somewhat clean, the piss puddle i walked pass towards my storage unit was not pleasant I beleive somewhat had no choice but to do there duty. My items will definetely be out and once an exciting reasonable deal from another storage comes to my attention, my shared tip will be spread amongst my fellow yelpers, so Mr/Ms owner and employees, im sure you are lurking through my picture reading my reviews, please do so and speak your mind when I arrive, I do have a unique look I also do have a slight personal problem of unnecessary over charges. I used to store my items at Extra Space storage when I moved here to Alameda. Very convenient from my home down the street. Just a safety tip. The street Clement and Willow can be dangerous. Be careful driving in and out of extra space storage. A lot of speeding cars go by when you pull out of storage space. Blind spot on left as you pull out from the parked cars on Clement. Anyway...from reading these other reviews I now realized that I got in for around $78 per month then shot up to believe around $110? I then decided best to store my items at Alameda Point Storage. A larger unit for around $73 per month. The regional managers just happened to be at that location when I was moving out. I told them I could not budget that with my income at that time. The regional manager asked what he could do to make me stay. He said he couldn't match the other price I was getting. I really wanted him to know the other reasons and should have....I never found the staff at Extra Space friendly. Whatever....I could deal with that. I didn't like the monthly phone calls I would receive to remind me when my rent would be due. I told them to please stop calling me every month. I know when my rent was due each month. They still called anyway. Also when I would walk over to pay my bill at times they wouldn't allow me to bring my service dog in. I asked why? He said..."all dogs bite" I believe in live and let live. I let it go and moved on. I go to extra space storage from time to time to help friend or clients with their storage needs. I was there today emptying a 10x25 storage. A lot of stuff. The storage grounds were very hot from the sun beating down on all the metal units and no breeze. My helper and I worked without our shirts on to help stay cool. My helper also uses an electric cigarette. One of the Extra space staff came by in his golf cart and said there was no smoking. I said....oh that's just my friends electric cigarette. He said...come on guys I can smell the cigarette smoke. His tone with us was that he didn't believe us and talked down to us like we were a couple of hoodlums and he was a cop. "Hey guys...you need to keep your shirts on too. I politely said no. He then left. Shortly after the other female staff stopped by and told us also to put our shirts on. I said no. She then said "excuse me...what did you say" she made me feel like I was in the high school principals office. I just kept quiet and finished my job. I then asked other tenants if it bothered them that we didn't have our shirts on. They couldn't see what the big deal was? The staff there continues to be unfriendly and didn't even ask nicely "hey fellas...we would appreciate it if you kept your shirts on" I will never return there or recommend them. Buyer beware, bait-and-switch! I needed a place that was easy in and out that I could swing by before or after work because of the odd housing I had at the time. They did have the best gate hours of any of the places that I called in the area. I ended up getting an drive up access unit near the back with 2 large steel swing doors. The unit was wide and shallow, not a big deal just odd. I did get my first month free but not a great price after that. I have another storage unit out of town that is indoors with climate control for $32 compared to the $81 I was paying here. The doors to my unit are right in the sun so everything gets hot during the day. The way the unit is built looks like the rain would come right into the unit from the top during the wet season. After being here only 4-half months I got a notice of rate increase for the start of my 6th month. I went to the office and asked why and got the generic it comes from above and they can ask for a price reduction. After a week or two I went back to the office and asked what the outcome was to find out they never even heard back from management. I asked again and this time did hear back with a solid no. They did try to offer me BS like downsizing and other useless ideas that do not fix the problem of the unit being over priced. The office staff was very nice and were trying to help but there was nothing they could do. I gave notice and moved out before the start of my 6th month. read more

If you come access this individual just walk the other way, actually just don't come here at all. There is no way we would have signed up for a storage unit if we didn't need one immediately and didn't have time to go to another location. My friend handed her ID over and Angela said to her "is this you" which my friend confirmed and then Angela replied "well you look good now though" seriously? Did that just happen? This woman was completely scatter brained and she insulted my friend to her face. Plus she said we couldn't get a call from her manager because she was out of town. I went there since it was close to my business and not too far away from my house. Go there and asked about the price that was in their web site. They were like:"Ops,that price is not longer valid anymore" So I ended paying $152 dollars instead of $66 dollars that was mark in their web site for a little tiny storage place. Well I had to put this stuff somewhere...After 5 days of putting my stuff there,I got there to find out that they locked my unit. I was like,why they never told that they were going to lock unit.I just have some used and abuse Martial Arts equipment? Went to talk with the person in the front desk and they were like: "This is for safety sir,we must keep all your stuff safe..."Well you guys asked me if I was going to put a lock and I did said that I was fine with no lock ,and I wasn't worry about someone come in and steal my used and abused Martial Arts stuff...Did not want to dump in the street so I figured that put in a storage place was the right thing to do for the meanwhile! Then let me get inside to my unit so i can storage more stuff. Sorry we mail your KEY to your house so it should be in your house in 2-3 days. Dang! I was waiting to come through the mail but it never came. Almost 10 days later not be able to use the storage unit that I pay top dollars for it,I went by the post office to see if they had my mail.The post office had my key in there.(It was a certified mail and I had no idea,wonder why they never told me about it) I went back and told the guy that was in the front desk,I asked to speak with a manager or supervisor. He told me to not to worry about it that he would take care of me. Great. Well not too great since a week pass by and my storage was due to pay,but I did had the 10 days extra since you guys locked my unit and I could not use for 10 days. The manager now came in and said: "Sorry sir we have no idea about this issue and your unit is now due to pay..." How about my extra 10 days since the guy that was in the front desk told me not to worry about it.... She replied: "What guy sir?" They made me pay an extra $65 dollars plus the lock that I never asked to have it...They never credit anything and they were very rude to me and my family. I will never go back to this place 2201 Clement ave. There is tons of places out there with much better prices and with way better customer service then this place. Customer service does not exist and the manager does not care about customers.I asked to speak with the owner of the place because probably he has no idea that this is happening on his facility-SAD! The units seem good enough physically, the initial prices seemed fair, and the security seems adequate but we've had two problems with this business. The first problem was the extreme high-pressure that was used to sell insurance with their units - like your worst experience with a car salesman. At first they insisted that insurance was "required by law" until I said that I've had units at other places that didn't require it. Then it was "very strongly encouraged" and then when we declined altogether we were told to send them a copy of our homeowner's or renter's insurance so that they could confirm that we were covered. When we refused all of that they finally relented, with a lot of theatrical grumbling and hand-wringing, to "let" us forego the insurance by signing a long waiver of responsibility. The second problem came a few short months after first renting the unit when the rent suddenly jumped 14%. From the other reviews it sounds like we can expect this to happen regularly ... until we leave. I don't expect to be using them long. read more

Satisfied Customer! After checking information from two additional places, I decided on this one. I appreciated the phone attitude with the initial call and the good service with three follow-up calls before handing over any cash. The move-in process was efficient and professional and I returned twice that day to start the loading process. I've returned two additional times in the last ten days and have always found the situation entirely satisfactory. I appreciate the cleanliness of the grounds, also the security. I'll update my review, if needed, as I continue to store items from my house. My suggestion is to give these guys your business but make sure you ask all your questions so you have all the info. read more

Much the same experience as Albert. I was looking at bumping up in size and consolidating some of my storage, when i noticed that my 5X5 Unit that was costing me $105 a month was advertised online at $63. I called, and apparently all 5X5 units are not created equal. The longer you're there, the more per month you pay. If you want a lower rate, you have to move your stuff to another, identical unit. Or downsize, which would suck, because eventually you'd end up paying exactly the same amount. The person who took my call was not in the least rude, I will say, and they have always been quite pleasant to deal with. But this is just...no. I'm going to look for another storage joint, and see what I can find. read more

I needed a clean, secure and friendly place to store all of my belongings for six months while I traveled and Extra Space Storage in Alameda fit the bill. The manager Earl was super sweet and set me up quickly. Angela and the guy on site helped me when my friend jammed the elevator. After six months of storage, I spent almost a week going there every day to repack my stuff to ship it cross country and I had a lovely time each day. It was very quiet.... almost meditative and the bathroom on site even had a superb fragrance. They dealt with my movers fabulously and I really appreciated it that a staffer actually lives on site. I also saw the staff be very kind with someone who was clearly in a domestic violent situation and was afraid her husband was going to take things from her unit. The staff was kind and gentle with her.... all of which makes me miss Alameda already! read more

Came back later that week - sure enough- more prints & they had broke the sheetrock above one door! Then I noticed my things missing and THEN came back and found people sleeping in my hallway!. Melissa was extremely rude and unprofessional. Pulled the bait and switch over the phone ("yes, come in, we have your unit available!"). After driving there on a workday since she said she'd hold the unit, I show up and it's ("oh, that units no longer available, but let me show you a more expensive unit in a worse location"). So she didn't/forgot/or never held the unit, that's disappointing. She claims they NEVER are allowed to hold units. Ok, sure. (My friend just called to test this theory, and a lady said she can hold a unit for a few hours). The premise for this review is the way Melissa treated a potential customer (or just a person), basically yelling and demanding I leave the front office when I wouldn't accept the unit she wanted to show me and I asked to remain on the callback list. It was like I wasted her time (I.e. Picking up the phone and lying), when in fact she wasted mine (staying on the wait list and rearranging my work schedule). Fortunately, there are a lot more storage units in and around alameda, some of which are family owned. This place has poor online reviews, but i fell for the shiny banner in front. Lesson: if it smells like a duck and looks like a duck, it's probably a duck. I have to question their "perfect" Google reviews. read more
