HORRENDOUS Experience at Extra Space on Clement in Alameda My experience at this location was frustrating from start to finish. The office was locked during working business hours, and I left several voicemails over time -- none of which were ever returned or followed up on. Anytime I needed help with billing, gate codes, or basic questions, there was simply no one available. I even tried using their online live chat, and after explaining my issue, I was given a gate code -- but the agent told me they weren't sure it was going to work. That sums up the level of care and confidence they provide: guesswork. Even basic conveniences were missing -- there was no access to recycling or trash disposal, so I had to take all my unused boxes and even trash from cleaning up rat droppings back home to throw away. There was also no bathroom available for tenant use -- a basic necessity that was completely overlooked. For a paid facility, that level of neglect is unacceptable. Worse, my unit (#907) was physically unsafe. The door malfunctioned regularly and fell on my head multiple times. I even had to crawl into the unit at one point to fix a jammed door on my own. When my father was helping me take things to the Salvation Army, the gate code wasn't working, which delayed my moving-out process and added unnecessary stress. Other serious issues included: A rent increase without any notice The facility called the police on me without justification -- though the officers and I had a good laugh about it afterward, and I even got the officer's number so I could call them directly if I had more gate code issues. A rat infestation that affected my unit and others -- and when I reported it, staff ignored the issue entirely. The unit was filthy, with rat droppings inside, and it was clear that maintenance and sanitation were not a priority. Most of the staff were rude, unresponsive, or simply absent, though I do want to acknowledge Riley, who was the only team member that was helpful and professional. Between the unsafe conditions, lack of communication, zero accountability, and completely unreliable customer service, I strongly urge others to avoid this location. I've since moved to Public Storage, and the difference has been like night and day. If you choose to rent here, make sure you're insured -- and be prepared to handle everything on your own. read more

We left our stuff in there after moving and when we finally went to check on it, it was completely infested with rats and all our belongings were covered in rat poop and piss and the boxes were all torn into. On top of it getting charged so much for this to happen?? And when we brought it up we got told "oh yes we're near an area where there's a lot of rats" OK??? Maybe mention that???? Do not leave your stuff here. There's rat traps all around as well, I don't know how we missed this. Oh AND they charged us more without informing us. read more

I really wish I'd read the reviews first. Buyer beware - if you rent here they will hike your rent multiple times within the first year. My rate went up by 130% in less than a year ($94/mo to $210/mo). If you call and protest they'll lecture you that your contract says the starting rate was a "promotion" and the increases are legal. I have learned my lesson and I hope anyone reading this is spared from this predatory business. read more

I notified the front desk and they basically ignored the situation and said only I could do was file an insurance claim. As others have mentioned in the reviews, if you rent here based on a promotion or web rate, be prepared to have the price increased without proper notice. I rented an 8x16 unit in September for a web rate of $248. They increased it in December to $344 without proper notice, never received a letter nor saw any notice in my account online, an almost 39% increase! I reached out multiple times online and left voicemail messages. I called for a third time and finally someone answered the phone. The customer rep said they'd reach out to corporate to see if they could reduce the price. They knocked it down to $305, and I noticed the same space today is currently at $248. If you're interested in deceptive pricing tactics come here to be yo-yo'd with your $$$$. I'm currently looking for another storage space this is ridiculous.... read more

04/07/25- Update. Today my wife went to the storage and found out they removed our lock and placed another lock on it for the soon to be auction. It's been 7 days and they never removed it after I paid. My wife says our things in our storage was moved around and some expense shoes were missing. F*ck this place read more

Great customer service, the review is based on the pricing. Self-Storage pricing really needs an overall. Prices go up without notice, you sign up under a "promo" then then jack up the price on you "based on market conditions" yet they have plenty of empty units. I was told I had to purchase their insurance, when in fact I found out I can bring my own insurance $7.99 vs $12 a month. Got tired of going into the office to jump into another promotion. I went 1 mile away to A1 Storage, which is much better for my needs. read more

He/she was walking with me and was told me I am not always to help you to open the door. You need to open by yourself. Wth he/she said. Rate hikes are common. Shop around if you have time. Mine was almost 40% after the first 4 months. I didn't do my homework and look at the other reviews. Beware of the rent spike people. After 3 months my rent jacked up and now will most likely keep going up from there. These reviews are not lying. Claiming it's a market thing but in reality just taking more money from people. Lots of webs and spiders around my indoor storage unit. Oliver explained the process over the phone along with fees before coming in. We came in, had a great tour. He gave us different options and let us see them. He showed us each vital part of the storage area, such as the lift, stairs, easy access, etc. He walked us through the proceed with confidence and ease. They also take COVID precautions here very seriously! It smells so good in their office, keep distance and sanitize everything in front of you before you touch it. We are very happy with our rental. I wouldn't waste your time using this storage facility. It's has low ratings for a reason. They raise their prices every 6 months or so & add on insurance & admin fees. I just found a larger unit for the same price that DOESN'T charge insurance (optional) or admin fees. Bring your own lock or purchase one of their overpriced options. I've seen homeless, drugged out people hanging out in their storage smoking cigarettes. Unfortunately their unit is in the same section as mine so now all of my items smell like cigarettes. Great! I've mentioned it to the staff to which I get the response of "they're not homeless but I know who you're talking about. We'll talk to them" yet it keeps happening. I had to come in first thing in the morning, it was very reliving to see the employees were very punctual. Typically when I come in this early at other places the morning crews always tend to be a couple minutes late and it's always just a hassle. I was interested in renting out a unit gave them a description on what I was looking for and they set me up with what they thought works best. Everyone was very helpful and efficient, they had great customer service and insightful recommendations (I highly recommend getting covered by their insurance). I can tell I won't be having any trouble with this company and making my belongings will be secured! read more

Not very transparent pricing. They had my credit card on file but still charged me a late fee.

I needed storage for a short period of time while some work was done at our house, and chose to go with extra space where stored many valuables important to me. So I was infuriated when after just three weeks when I went to check in my things and begin to move out and I found EVERYTHING COVERED WITH A NASTY BLACK DUST. When I called to complain the employee told me that they had just resurfaced the driveways and the contractor rushed to finish the job and it was from asphalt. Yuck. No offer of a refund or credit, just an apology. I recommend anyone else who is there to check their stuff and make sure it's not damaged. When you pay to rent a storage space you expect that your belongings won't get covered in ASPHALT DUST!!! read more

They said it was a "Promotional price" - The confirmation email I got said the "Promo" was n/a - very suspect. Very upset with this place . I recently move my storage unit from one city to the other less then 5 months ago. I found this place to have a better rate than Public S. , however I was shocked when they Hiked my monthly rate by more than 45 % this last month. I stopped in the office to ask why the increase, and was actually going to inquire about a larger space . Was somewhat I-rate with the Dude that worked the counter, Long story shorty was accused of being raciest When some pulls out that card for a word they admitted they do not know what it means. I say the hell with it. Moved out of the Dam gouging place. A 45 % Increase, not recommending this place. I'll try and tell at least 10 people about this place, and there Poor service . The staff is nice, the space is fine. But nobody warned me that rent would go up $10 after only 5 months and then go up $10 again 8 months after that. So TWO rent hikes, from $68 to $78 to $88/month from June 2018 to June 2019. Previously, I had a larger space with CSI storage on Alameda Point and the staff was also nice, the space was great, and my rate never went up. I switched to Extra Space because CSI doesn't have the option of smaller units. And it was a great rate. Temporarily. So, to those considering the smaller units here - beware that your rent will go up without notice, at random times during the year. read more

I could basically go on and on how great the staff at this location were. I would definitely recommend this storage due to the safe and clean environment. Well, we have to sell our house! One income just doesn't cut it with the high mortgage. So storage we need close by before relocating overseas with some of our stuff while other things will stay in the (no longer quitw so) Good OLE USA for a future part-time return. After checking on yelp for storage spaces in Alameda, and finding only 2 rated, poorly at that, I was gonna go with the place across the High Street Bridge which has great ratings. Then one of my pharma rep friends whol ives on the island told me about this place on Clement which she likes. I told Jack to check it out. He did and rented us a space the other day. He told me how nice and helpful the staff was. Today I saw it for he first time. Clean, attractive, and the staff really is nice. They even let us borrow a dolly to help get big, heavy boxes down our front stairs. Thank you! read more

I've rented numerous storage units in my life and it's common they attract new comers with some sort of promo which was why I signed up here. After the 3 month mark, they hike your monthly rate as you get situated and settled in. Extra Space Alameda's justification for their rate hike was to be aligned with the going rate in town. I've looked at 3 other storage units similar to my size and all 3 advertised lower prices on their websites with or without promo codes. I rented a 10' U-Haul for few hours and will still be paying less than what Extra Space would charge me based on a 3 month time frame alone. read more

The Alameda location has been excellent so far. The only bad thing was that I was originally reserved to go to San Leandro but the woman kept trying to push their insurance on me, and they make you buy locks at that location, AND they don't allow you to do contactless checkin for the first time you check in - you have to do it within their office hours. Luckily, she did tell me that other locations will allow me to check in after office hours which is what i did with this one. I did not receive the gate code but luckily I called and they texted it to me right away. The guy on the phone at the Alameda location was patient, assuring and even explained where my locker would be and gave me a description of what to expect. There is a lift where you load your stuff and you climb up the stairs (if you are not on the ground floor) and you send the lift up with your stuff. at the other end you grab it (there are two cars usually around the elevator) and wheel it to your location. It was around 9pm at night and I felt safe, it was bright and it was only easy to get to my location because the guy explained it to me. The only thing was that he didn't explain that I don't necessarily have to look for the letter since I was worried at first that I was not at the right place. At this location you can have your own locks and even though they charge you for it when you do contactless (they leave a new lock in the storage space) you can return it and they will credi t your account. Not sure if they refund you if you are only there a monht but I will be there more than a month. So far so good with this location and they don't push their insurance on you. I had previously been at the Folsom street one in SF and they didn't demand that you purchase their insurance either so I was so surprised by how adamant the lady at the San Leandro Dolittle Drive one was being. I was put off by her as she stressed me out and was about to give up on Extra Space but honestly Alameda has been a great experience so far. I will update as I stay there longer. It's only been 2 days. I also have money owed to me from the Folsom one that has not been settled yet because they charged me wrongly but I'm hopeful that that straightens out as promised. read more

I've only had a great experience here..reasonable rate for a small storage space, easy to make payments and access was always on point. That being said, I am moving to different storage company where I can get a fairly larger storage unit for a slightly higher price. The comparable unit would have been much too expensive at Extra Space Storage. Otherwise, I would still recommend them if you need a safe, secure location for the short term. read more

This is a very clean facility. That is the only positive thing I can say about the Alameda Extra Space Storage facility. I rarely go on Yelp to post comments, but felt compelled to in this instance because this has been the absolute worst experience with a storage facility that I've ever had. Let me start with the staff. Not only was I misinformed about being able to send a pod to the storage facility, the staff was so cavalier about the inconvenience and expense it cost me. I have never dealt with such incompetence and indifference. To add insult to injury, I had to call the national office because it was impossible to get a manager in the phone or to even get through to a live person. When I finally did get a call back there was no offer to really fix the problem. Someone messed up and no one wants to take responsibility. Save your money and sanity and go elsewhere! read more

So, we just got a bill raising our rent $80.00 which they just raised it March 2021 so, in 12 months they raised the rent $93.00. They decided to add new gates and now they want people to pay for their upgrades. It was great for the first few years - now, they are really taking advantage. Look for a better space.
