    Our last trip to the storage unit. We are finally moving! Once the management changed hands, the service and communication was much better.

Our most recent move got complicated fast, with multiple pickup locations, last-minute changes, custom logistics, and Brandon was extremely helpful. He met every curveball with a genuine can-do attitude. He was honest about what was and wasn't possible while still making a lot of good things happen, and worked with us to land a fair, affordable price. He made a stressful move feel totally manageable.     Short version: I'm raising my review to 3 stars which is an average of the 1-star initial…read moreexperience with the 5-star effort that owner Matteo made to apologize, take responsiblity, and pay for damages. Long version: On the same day I e-mailed Up and Up's owner Matteo and posted this review--in fact, within an hour--he called and sent me a message. "I will make this right," he said. His actions over 2 weeks since then demonstrated his strong appetite to do as he promised. We discussed how this situation happened, and he took full responsibility for all of the elements of this that were preventable. In fact he took *personal* responsibility rather than throwing his crew under the bus, which was commendable. We talked about how he might more effectively communicate the fact that moving industry contracts fully protect moving companies from liability regardless of the cause--accidents or moving company negligence. My lesson: I should include full coverage insurance in my future moving budget. Matteo arranged for my damaged cabinet to be repaired, paid part of the costs of my unpacking crew (who had to play Jenga in order to carefully untangle the unsecured load), and promised to (re)train his crew. Despite the shifting load, we had very little breakage, and no breakage in the boxes they packed. For a cross-country move in a UPack truck (which is not known for gentle treatment of loads) this is a very good outcome. Matteo rightfully pointed out that I asked for help packing the kitchen the night before the move, which meant the crew moved quickly in the kitchen--hence the unlabeled boxes. I wish none of this had happened, but I'm very grateful for Matteo's integrity in committing to make it right.

    We left our stuff in there after moving and when we finally went to check on it, it was completely…read moreinfested with rats and all our belongings were covered in rat poop and piss and the boxes were all torn into. On top of it getting charged so much for this to happen?? And when we brought it up we got told "oh yes we're near an area where there's a lot of rats" OK??? Maybe mention that???? Do not leave your stuff here. There's rat traps all around as well, I don't know how we missed this. Oh AND they charged us more without informing us.

    HORRENDOUS Experience at Extra Space on Clement in Alameda…read more My experience at this location was frustrating from start to finish. The office was locked during working business hours, and I left several voicemails over time -- none of which were ever returned or followed up on. Anytime I needed help with billing, gate codes, or basic questions, there was simply no one available. I even tried using their online live chat, and after explaining my issue, I was given a gate code -- but the agent told me they weren't sure it was going to work. That sums up the level of care and confidence they provide: guesswork. Even basic conveniences were missing -- there was no access to recycling or trash disposal, so I had to take all my unused boxes and even trash from cleaning up rat droppings back home to throw away. There was also no bathroom available for tenant use -- a basic necessity that was completely overlooked. For a paid facility, that level of neglect is unacceptable. Worse, my unit (#907) was physically unsafe. The door malfunctioned regularly and fell on my head multiple times. I even had to crawl into the unit at one point to fix a jammed door on my own. When my father was helping me take things to the Salvation Army, the gate code wasn't working, which delayed my moving-out process and added unnecessary stress. Other serious issues included: A rent increase without any notice The facility called the police on me without justification -- though the officers and I had a good laugh about it afterward, and I even got the officer's number so I could call them directly if I had more gate code issues. A rat infestation that affected my unit and others -- and when I reported it, staff ignored the issue entirely. The unit was filthy, with rat droppings inside, and it was clear that maintenance and sanitation were not a priority. Most of the staff were rude, unresponsive, or simply absent, though I do want to acknowledge Riley, who was the only team member that was helpful and professional. Between the unsafe conditions, lack of communication, zero accountability, and completely unreliable customer service, I strongly urge others to avoid this location. I've since moved to Public Storage, and the difference has been like night and day. If you choose to rent here, make sure you're insured -- and be prepared to handle everything on your own.
