We got a nice unit, was led through the process seamlessly, and the facility is clean, easy to navigate, and has that wonderful liminal space effect that makes you feel just a little uneasy. Huge plus in my book! The units are also nice and tall, so if you're a black and yellow bin addict like we are, you can STACK this unit full of bins and really get your moneys worth on space. Signed up for the "$1 for the first month" deal and was quoted a rate of $42/month after that, which is what I paid the following month. But then the third month I was charged $86! No one told me it would more than double. They're telling me that my contract states that the $42 rate is "prorated" and the rate will go up to $61 after that. I was never given/sent a copy of my contract as I signed up over the phone. This doesn't explain why it went from $61 to $86, and the woman on the phone didn't understand why either. She did warn me that "rent goes up every three months, I warn all of my customers but not everyone here does that." Complete bullshit. The person I signed up with told me that insurance was included in the rate and this is not the case! Moving out tomorrow. read more

Staffs decent in Long Beach that's it The owner is one of the wealthiest people in the state she lives yet here's what Public storage offered me The most expensive basic storage i've ever rented, 1 bathroom 3 floors and no trash cans. Rat infestation after reports of damages and nautious urine smell . Finding droppings on everything what was not chewed apart from my vintage clothes was coated in piss it was a year and a half of reports before i even saw pellets or traps finally installed to stop this I had insurance and said that im protected. This is where Public storage will really screw you over I reccomend not paying for their insurance . They use Orang door insurance . it covers up to 250$ a claim, what they do not tell you is you will report the damages then they assess to tell you what they will pay you I reported over 250$ and they said it's not that valuable and they'd pay me less than half 117$ Then they finally let you know it's 100$ fee to file the insurance claim . I paid every month for years to make sure i'd be protected after what they told me and their 100$ file fee the 117 went down to they offered me a 17$ check! Laughable these people owning this business and insurance are freaking disgusting human beings. So glad im out in in a new unit no rats , nicer more bathrooms and i pay almost half of what i did at Public storage. I hope the worst karma befalls the owner how they abuse and take advantage after continuing to raise and hike rent costs as wealthy as they are in these disgusting service conditions. Will try and file all my belongs together 1 last time to bypass the fee .. I have aside from clothes art that was destroyed an easy 600-700 $ the worst experience ever. I've had weird bugs coming out of the unit to theirs no ceiling tops or traps so rats and bugs can go anywhere. I had to wash everything ! My 87 year old mother didn't pay attention to rate increase notices and I found out that they had jacked up the price for a unit that normally goes for $430 to $987! Due to a 20% rental increase and as of today not six months worth of storage activity, I was never informed that my rental fee would be increased from $564 to over $700' nor was I ever notified. As I try to schedule a move out for June 3 and anticipating I would have to pay for those three days I was informed that public storage policy is you pay for the whole month! So for three days this company is threatening to charge me $723 if I don't pay or send me to collections! I am outraged and as a senior really feel like Public Storage is taking advantage of their clients. Beware of Public Storage and their business policies! I cant even with the property manager right now. I accidentally rented the wrong unit and simply wanted to switch to a larger unit (more money for the business) but rather than just giving it to me straight the first time I called and tell me that I need to come down to the office to make the switch she gives me an 800 number, that I call, and they promptly tell me oh no she's the one who has to deal with that give her a call here's her direct line. So I call again, and she gives me a different number. BTW she was like yeah, if they tell you to call me again just give me a ring and I'll see what I can do for you. Be REALLY REALLY careful driving your car onto this property to get to your storage unit. I have found many many screws and nails on the ground. I now drive super slowly while on the premises, and get out of my car to look for screws / nails before continuing driving. I literally get out of my car, inspect the ground, and then drive the next 30 feet. Just today I found 5 screws. I found 4, then took a picture of them. Right after taking a picture, I found a 5th screw on the ground. Last time I visited a week ago, I found 3 or 4 nails / screws. About a month after using this Public Storage, I got my first flat tire. I don't drive much so I wondered where I could get a nail when I literally only drive around 15 miles per week around Alameda island. I wondered if it was from Public Storage because I started using a storage unit there. Lo and behold, the next time I visited, I walked around and saw several screws and nails on the ground. (of course I picked it up and threw them in the trash). I now park on the street if I don't need to carry much and just walk in. It's better than being stuck with a flat. Other than that, the customer service is good when setting up your unit. The down side that other people mentioned is that, yes, after 6 months, expect a rent increase. read more

When I was first looking into renting from this place, I noticed a decent number of reviews on Yelp about the rent going up frequently. However, when i called the facility, I spoke with Amber, who assured me very convincingly that the rent would not go up from my rate. Now, I know that this may not have held true for a decade, but I really felt that I was getting a genuine answer and that in general, I wouldn't see raises. Well, unfortunately after 5 months I got a notice in the mail that my rent would be going up. Obviously this is within their rights to do, but it just feels really shady. I did write into Support first to see if there was anything they can do, but I was told that because the current rate was already a lot higher than what I was paying (i.e. they raised prices by almost 20% in just a few months), it was impossible to consider reversing the increase decision. You'll notice if you review my profile on here that I have literally never left a negative review, but this just felt wrong. I would NOT recommend renting here if you don't want to see frequent price increases. read more

TL;DR Don't store anything here if you want it to be around when you come back. My saga with this particular Public Storage is a long one but I'll try to keep it to the parts worth noting. When I first rented a unit here, they directed me to a corner space and inside it was damp and moldy. I was worried about my things getting wet or moldy as well but they said it was their last unit. So, I moved my stuff in. A month later they said I had to move to a different space because that one ended repair. Great. After moving all of my things to a different unit (and not being compensated for the inconvenience). I've experienced rent increases of 20% each year. Because apparently "that's where the market is at". The final straw however is that I went to my unit today to grab a few things only to find that I can't open the door to my space. It's jammed. Odd. I finally figure out how to get it open and find that I've been robbed. Someone found some way to get in and stole some very valuable things. I'm not going into too much detail so other people don't get any ideas, but there were obvious signs that someone had forced their way in. I'll be moving my things out as soon as possible to another facility. UPDATE: When I came back the next day to file the police report and start moving things out I found that MORE things had been stolen. They came back and took more the next day! I spoke to someone at this facility on the phone about this and their only response was "file a claim with your insurance." I've moved all of my things out now, but as I was doing so, I ran into another couple who was there to store some things. On their unit, the lock had been cut off and replaced with another one. They had no idea what was taken because they couldn't even get into their unit. I have to say, the Alameda police department have been very attentive to this issue and I think they're doing everything in their capacity to catch the thieves (I ran into the same office who took my statement as this new couple was filing theirs) but the management at Public Storage seems totally uninterested in the fact that so many people in their facility are being robbed blind. They seem to think it's not their problem. I realize in their contract fine print they wash their hands of liability, but at the very least they could stand to have better security camera coverage as well as storage units that weren't so easy to break into. Reserved a unit online. Move-in was easy and I was a satisfied customer. Fast-forward 6 months. Rent is increased by 20% without notice. Left two voicemail messages that were never returned. Physically walked into the office and inquired. Was told that they don't handle rents. And left with a copy of a POSTCARD, I never received. The allegedly mailed postcard said my rent was increased without any explanation. Sent an email online. One week later, I received a response and soft copy of the POSTCARD. Obviously they have no problem contacting me to pay the rent invoice, but when they want to increase my rent, they send a POSTCARD! WTF?! They can increase rent HOWEVER much they want and WHENEVER they want, so long as they can prove they gave you 30 days notice. Complaint to the BBB is following shortly. read more

Reserved a unit online. Got a phone call within 5 minutes to set up an appointment. Akiesha went over everything with me once I got to the office. It was all very clear and she was helpful with any questions I had. I was worried about the heat with my belongings being in the indoor units but they told me about this stuff you can buy to absorb moisture. I was skeptical but it worked great. Bought one for my home too. Fast forward 3 months. It can get busy during the week but it's very easy to get in and out. It's about 137.00 for a 5x7 unit including insurance on the unit which is high I think but I love the girls at the front desk. They are super helpful and I always feel welcomed when I come through. Akiesha deserves a raise and I'm tempted to steal her away. Better get on it Public Storage! read more

I am very frustrated - so far, I have had a pretty good experience with Public Storage. I have been there for 1 1/2 years and they already raised my rent once, a jump of $30/mo on a base of $210. (14.3%) But now they have jumped it 37.5% by $90 - from $240 to $330 - WHY??? this is NUTS and I am going to have to look at moving my stuff to keep my expenses down. I got NO NOTICE or reasoning about this. Plus this unit does not even have an overhead light inside (at my old facility they were movement activated). So it is a dungeon. I have to use a headlamp to sort things inside. NOT HAPPY !!!! read more

Horrible security, negligent owners. Despite a rash of burglaries from their units, ownership refuses to make even basic arrangements to prevent thefts or prosecute those responsible. No warnings about the rampant thefts, either. This place is a trap for your belongings. No video monitoring of the entry or grounds - only the office so they can keep an eye on their worker. No logging license plates entering/leaving. After-hours access by anyone at all. The burglars who broke into my unit put a cheap padlock of their own on it with a Public Service sticker they had forged. They're organized, methodical and the ownership makes excuses, not improvements. They know full well that thieves are at work in their facility and target anyone foolish enough to use a padlock that's vulnerable to boltcutters, but they don't warn their customers. There should be a big warning sign on the office door - YOU MIGHT AS WELL PUT YOUR STUFF ON THE SIDEWALK AND SAVE THE RENTAL FEES. The other reviewers who found the staff to be rude may be correct, but imagine how you'd act if you spent your day dealing with angry customers whose stuff had been stolen. read more

Wow, reading the reviews below, I find out there have been burglaries there. Maybe that's why they force you to buy insurance. Long story short, scammed by their website. Felt like I was getting a deal paying "$1" for first month's rent and $22 for admin fees for "move-in rate of $23." When I get there it's a "oh buy the way, you're required to purchase our lock for $19.99, and you're also required to buy insurance (starting at $9 per month)." They ended up getting a tidy $51 from me by the time I walked out of there. Not to mention that the online "deal" of $9 off when you reserve online is negated when you are forced to buy at least $9/month for insurance.
