I recently switched units and what I thought would be a somewhat easy endeavor turned out to be a disaster with many stressors (including a broken freight elevator which seems to be a continued issue at the Mandela location). With that said, I give Storage Mart a 5-star rating. I would also like to take a moment to highlight the helpful and continued customer service/support I received from both Neil and Camilo during one of my toughest days. I was sent an invoice issued on 6/16 listing charges with a 7/1 due date. On 6/21 I was informed these charges were late and incurred a fee. When I cited the invoice's 7/1 due date, I was sent a new copy of the same invoice with an "issuance date" of 6/16, with charge added post-facto on 6/21. The act of editing an invoice *after* its issuance date to change the amount owed strongly suggested fraud, so I left a review stating as such. I was asked by the reply to email their help@, but I already did that yesterday before they even replied to this rating. They didn't even check their messages before telling me I should email them... Somehow this company's ad was very time wasteful. Not sure how and why but was offered a super (too good to be true?) price online. Then upon trying to finish my reservation the $71 price became $74 then $71 then $81. Not sure how the system works but it felt the epitome of switch and bait tactics. Given that I am punctilious on these matters I was going to see if I could do a small claims action. I believe the fees to file would have been much more than the rent discrepancy but refundable if I won (assuming the judge wouldn't consider my action too punctilious for such a small difference in rent). Storage Mart seemed very eager to refund and deny service to close the matter ASAP rather than litigate. Storage Mart seemed very apologetic too for the fact that the unit size was nowhere close to the size seemingly advertised. Storage Mart said some 3rd parties quote their size wrong. Storage Mart also said they had previously tried to phone me to alert me of the size. Not too sure why or how they get tangled in false advertising and subsequent complaints. Not sure if it could be Storage Mart being very close to trying to use smoke and mirrors to try to attract new customers and face litigation or perhaps their or 3rd party involve very inept or sloppy advertising. Overall though very time wasteful Storage Mart was somewhat seemingly trying their best -- sort as if walking a tight rope between bait/switch, false ads, inept organization and hurried concerned customer service. I would enjoy using my legal background to see if I could do a small claims action but not sure how I can quantify damages in switch and bait tactics situations, or if I could be compensated much for losing many hours in a messy reservation? read more

DO NOT BOOK ONLINE. I called Storage Mart several times to confirm that I had booked a ceiling-height storage unit. However, when I arrived, the guy showed me around this super danky building and showed me to the unit that was reserved in my name, which only had ladder access and was no more than 3 feet high. I explained to the Assistant Manager that I had called to confirm a ceiling-height unit and the Assistant Manager laughed and explained that this happens all the time with people booking online and that they can't do anything about the website's false advertising. The Assistant Manager then tried to sell me a different, more expensive unit, which of course, I declined. I asked if I could speak to the actual manager and he basically said that that would be pointless as there is nothing they can do about it. This company is awful. read more

April 30 was my move-out date. I turned off auto-pay when I gave notice. Came by at various times ("100% fully accessible!") and they were still closed. Came by yesterday before noon to remove my belongings and surprise! closed. Closed at 10:56 this morning. Discovered that somehow, mysteriously, auto-pay for my account had been turned back on. Have notified my bank that the charge is fraudulent and will file a claim tomorrow. (Because my bank is actually open during the times they say they are and will update their website if those hours have to change. Because that's what a good business does - Communicate and inform. Learn things, Storage-Mart.) Fraud is just not on, Storage-Mart. Either ensure, PERSONALLY, that this location is "100% fully accessible" or do not attempt to charge people when they are physically blocked from moving out for weeks on end. read more

It's an illegal scam commonly used by shady businesses that want you to "renew your insurance information." Well, their website "fails" to make purchases, or reoccurring purchases, so they pigeonhole you into paying fifteen dollars extra to do on the phone! The people this place serves are in a mostly black and indigenous neighborhood, where the income level is drastically below the Oakland average. This type of action is what companies are reported to the Better Business Bureau for. (no, the website or automated payment system wasn't broken for a day or anything, it simply doesn't work, likely when they decide to do their scam.) Don't take the risk and store your stuff here. I would recommend reading the whole thing if you are considering this place... WOW! I find it hard to believe that they have any positive reviews... makes me wonder if they are real or fake. I only chose this one due to reviews. RIGHT OFF THE BAT.... They pressured me to pay UPFRONT when I reserved. It says they don't and then I started getting phone calls. I said that I couldn't pay in advance without visiting first. I got the canned reply about three corporate values, and all the great reviews and blah, blah, blah... which is a corporate PR response... It is NOT at all what they are like in person. The pics shown are not at all like the reality. 1. There are RAT traps EVERYWHERE... and signs of rodents. I asked about this right away and she just said... "Don't store food... and they should leave your stuff alone" 2. The SMELL of URINE is SO strong that I was gagging. 3. Units are DARK and disgusting... 4. AND the KICKER is that they allow HOMELESS people to LIVE in the units and THEY stack them on top of each other. I asked the manager, she said, " they come in and there is nothing we can do about it - they are not homeless.... they are paying for their unit." 5. IT WAS UNSAFE.... My mover was horrified and got me out of there right away. He said that there was NO WAY that I should ever go there alone. Filthy, scary, and insecure Run away from this place. It is TERRIBLE. I rented here back in 2017 thinking it would be for a few months, but got stuck due to circumstance for years. Here is a list of everything that is wrong with this place: - It's filthy. Rats and/or mice got into my storage unit. Mice poop ended on everything and random bags have been chewed into. - It's insecure. My storage unit was broken into and things were stolen. When I asked if they had security footage or would pay for the losses--they said "no"! - The storage units are *DARK*. My storage unit had no light source, so good luck finding your possessions. - Parking is extremely limited, only two cars can fit in the garage, and its a tight squeeze for any car--forget about a Haul truck. - Unit access is difficult. There's small hallways and tight corners which are difficult to move carts through. There's a freight elevator which is slow, and which has manually operated doors, which are often accidentally left open, thus making the elevator unusable. - Homeless people hang out in the building (and I suspect some people are sleeping in units?) - The neighborhood/street is particularly terrible. If you park on the street expect to walk past piles of trash and people sitting on the sidewalk. Basically only rent here if you want to feel like you're living out one of there SAW movies every time you come to look at your stuff. read more

I'm a frequent visitor that rents a unit in this facility. Their storage is a reasonable size for the amount of items that I need to store. Their customer service is really helpful and supportive. Having a storage unit at this place has been absolutely useless! Multiple times they have been closed during their business hours with no notice to the customers. I am a quadriplegic from a spinal cord injury and use a power chair for mobility. This past weekend I had lost my key to my storage locker I needed to cut off the lock. John was very generous and waive the $50 fee to remove the lock. I ended up clearing out my locker which I had not used in three years. Renter beware. if you are homeless and need super cheap small rental month-to-month space this can be a good solution; but for anyone else prepare to get bilked. These guys messed up my billing several different times (so if you do business with them NEVER do automatic billing) and when I had spend a ton of time clearing it up they cam becak a few months later saying I had missed a month and now my daughter's storage was in arrears and they had tacked on major fees and suddenly (like swiftly) they were demanding a ton of money or they were going to AUCTION all of her precious childhood memorabilia off that Friday. I call corporate (which is really hard to get ahold of and they say they have it all under control - their mistake. But the local owner? He says he doesn't give a bee's rear end about corporate and my girl's stuff is going on the block (exhortion). Well she is in tears...I know it isn't legal...but what are you going to do? I can see that a mistake has been made on one month..so I owe like $39.00 and this is gonna be like $210 or more. I pay. So know what you could get into. YOu have no rights. They can "cause" a problem wuth their billing and then its your problem as the fees mount and then suddenly you can;t get them on the phone and then your stuff is on the block...and well maybe that is why there prices are so low. At first, it seemed great. Nice customer service and affordable for a college student. After being gone for a summer and coming back, my roommate found out the unit was COVERED in rat shit/piss. I was upset and when I got to the site to move out, I realized I lost my key for the lock. The guy working was outside smoking & took me inside to help me out. Except the one issue was that he was being rude from the get go. I pleaded to see if he could cut off the lock since my roommate is all moved out and it was just my stuff and I literally just rented the uhaul. He then kept asking me what storage unit I was in when I said I was looking for it in my phone. After him asking me another time with his rude attitude I got mad and told him that he needed to wait. Then he retorted. "I'm trying to help you, I don't need to do this." He walked out. Actually guy, it's your damn job you do need to do it and in case you didn't know, customer service means not taking the customers attitude personally, especially when you were the one being rude first! Finally I got the door open (on my own) and I started panicking...it smelled awful too. After slowly taking out everything one by one and deciding what was good to keep and disinfecting the boxes....I found a dead rat in a giant shopping bag that had one of my mirrors. I was too mortified to take a picture and when I told the guys they just came and picked it up with a napkin like it was no big deal. At some point during my move in the same dude kept going on the intercom saying,"Customer on the third floor please close the elevator door!" I was on the third floor and I did close it. After going to check on the elevator, I went back to stacking the cart with more of my items. He went on the intercom two more times after that semi-yelling with an annoyed tone, as if I hadn't closed the elevator. My guy friend who was there SAW that I closed that elevator and when I double checked. That guy who has been working there the past few days is one rude, unprofessional, and overly sensitive kid. Worst customer service I've EVER experienced. They accused me of helping some douchebag who followed me in break into unit(s.. I'm not sure) with no proof. Then when they realized they were wrong, they continued to treat me like a criminal. The regional manager made fun of me/this situation while reviewing my bill summary and deducting ALL fees or extra charges leaving just the rent. So, you know you were wrong but you have to make me feel stupid for caring about my belongings?? I'm on a tight budget...I tried to pay my rent on time and they refused to help me/service me. Now they won't give me my belongings until I pay for three months worth of rent that they would not accept from me before. It's bullshit. It's extortion. Both male managers have lied to me, made up scenarios, insulated me in front of other customers, threatened me, laughed at me, made fun of me, made me cry on several occasions, and are in the process of extorting me now. I'm furious with the dispicable way I've been treated here when I was a perfect tenant. I always paid early and in excess. The level of disrespect for their customers is apparent when I try to get ahold of SOMEONE from their company to resolve this and no one responds to my emails or calls, nothing is being done to rectify this situation. My husband and I had the sad task of retrieving our deceased son's belongings from the Storage Mart location at 2843 San Pablo Avenue in Oakland, CA. We drove to Oakland from San Diego to do so. We were met by John, a Storage Mart employee, who was kind, helpful and very caring at this sad time. He assisted us in locating our son's belongings and expressed his condolences at our loss. The place is smelly and full of rat traps. The unit I rented online was still occupied so I had to get another one which was full of rat droppings. The stench from the cleaning fluids made me nauseous in just the short time I was there. They also attach an insurance fee which wasn't mentioned online in the monthly fees. I needed last minute storage at a reasonable price, and they had space for me. Customer service has been good every time I've been there and the facilities are...adequate. The freight elevator takes some getting used to and my unit had zero lighting, but I made sure to bring headlamps when I needed access. Admittedly, there are mice hiding in the building, and my unit had plenty of the little explorers, but I was also given plenty of traps (the sticky kind) to put on the floor and just inside the door. Sucks for the mice. In any case, I found a safe place to store my stuff while I was traveling and it was all right where I left it when I returned. Location was convenient for me as well. read more

I've rented a large locker from Storage Mart for the past 6 months and was very satisfied with the unit, but offended by the rudeness of the woman assiting the manager. She gave me no help at all in figuring out how the industrial elevator worked - and when it got stuck between floors, I had to call S.M. Headqurters in MIssouri to get help. Then today, when I wanted to downsize to a smaller unit, I met the new assistant Bonita and she was absolutely wonderful - courteous, professional, empathic and solution-oriented. The elevator was falling apart. Storage facilities make enough money to do necessary repairs but always refuse too. Things like the elevator should be mandatory and not over looked. This storage facility isn't the best choice if your a female. It's spooky and I wouldn't dare feel safe going up and dwn the elevator alone. It will get stuck and you'll be left there. read more

Where do I even begin with this place? So, I found this place on selfstore.com which is a very helpful comparison site for self storage. I reserved a 5' x 10' online since they had an online special of 99% off the 1st month's rent and the rent per month there after was $89.99. Everything was great until I showed up to view the space. When the guy opened the unit I reserved, the door fell off the hinges and he told me that I couldn't rent that unit and it was the last one of that size available so I had to upgrade my size and that my rent would now be $147 per month. So he proceeds to show me 10 more units all over the place that were in odd shapes or had holes in the floor, tobacco on the floor and when I asked about pests, the guy said "no pests but you may have to worry about mice", as soon as he said that I turned around a saw a shoe box sized mouse trap. That's when I asked for a refund. My money was refunded and when the guy asked what the reason was for, I told him cleanliness because every room I saw was dirty, not leveled or looked skeptical. Like a trained customer service pro, he tried to offer me another unit at their other facility but it was out of the way and by the looks of this property I declined. The only good things about this place are that the outside and the office looked neat and clean and the customer service reps are helpful. I do appreciate the guy walking around to show me 10 units so he wouldn't lose a sale and they did apologize. After I left, I went to Public Storage in Berkeley and got a larger unit for much less that was also super clean. read more

This place offers the best prices in the area, especially for Cal students. That is the appealing part. The rougher side of the low-prices are the neighborhood this place is located in- it is in a deep, seedy, dangerous part of Oakland. I know, I lived a block away on Myrtle street for several months. I ended up renting an "attic" space, which was above the normal storage lockers, in the ceiling eaves. Rough to get to, but for $40 bucks a month, how could I complain? You need to get buzzed in the front door, the freight elevator is ornery as f**k and the staff near non-existent. But like I said, you could pay triple the price, and for six months, my goods/chattels were kept safe/secure in this facility and I had no trouble with their hours of operation. read more

Fucking Storage Mart is a rip-off. I believe their is diabolical scheme to confiscate your belongings in junction with low life auctioneers. For years, I stored my stuff and utilized automatic bill-pay to pay my monthly rental. But all of sudden four months ago management claims payments stopped. There was no reason payments should have stopped nor Storage Mart not receiving the payments. My banking account was good; and fully funded. But last week I noticed I have not seen the 49.00 withdrawal out of my checking account and decided maybe I should investigate. I called the company and found out Storage Mart had auctioned off all my belongings in keep claiming they tried to contact me for the last three months, but i received nothing in the mail nor received any telephone calls. I was devastated. I called the regional manager. He was of little help. I tried to convince him to let me contact the auctioneer in hopes that maybe I could retrieve some, just some of my items back, but he refused even after first stating he would try to do something to help me. I find all of this hard to believe. For years I have used storage units like Public Storage, Beckin Storage and others and never, ever had any problems, but all of sudden STORAGE MART do the unthinkable and did something i tried very hard to avoid and did avoid for over twenty years. In the end, it might be some sort of plot management is involved in where they stop payment of your account in hopes they can legally confiscate and and eventually sell off one's personal valuables in auction. It may sound wee bit paranoid but you never know in this day in age. Therefore, I write this as warning to all. Do not do business with Storage Mart. They may be cheaper and more physically convenient, but the anguish and stress you feel losing articles it took a lifetime to accumulate is not worth the savings. read more

Storage is storage, but these guys make it easy. Yonas was a lifesaver, switching us in a pinch to a better unit that could accommodate our somewhat bulky cargo once we realized it wouldn't fit in the unit we originally reserved, and he even helped us move it. They have a hydraulic lift if you ask for one, so if your space is in a loft, you will save your lower lumbar some wear and tear. Checkout was a breeze, auto-pay set up. Very affordable, and staff couldn't have been better. read more

StorageMart was an easy move. When I arrived in the truck I already was being helped with maneuvering safely into the building. It was a smooth stress free experience. A very kind gentleman helped me move my large paintings from beginning to end as I was on my own. I really appreciate the the high level of customer service. They had a good system of someone being at the front desk and another being on the floor ready to help. The price is unbeatable for the sizes, trust me I called 20 other locations.
