The customer service at this location is excellent. I was very pleased with the the service when I came to rent a storage unit. I wasn't sure if I was going to use this location but the receptionist by the name of Nae Twinn was so helpful not only did I rent a unit she convinced me to rent a larger space . The place is really cleaned inside and outside. The units are open at a good time from 7-7pm. The employees there are very helpful and nice to talk too, plus did a great job showing me on the tour the first day. I truly would tell people to rent at this unit. read more

I WANT TO LIKE YOU! So bad. On one hand, the units are clean and the staff seem friendly enough. On the other, the staff doesn't appear very well-trained and leave out a good load'a details when you enter that establishment. I had the misfortune of grabbing a unit online that I was set to finalize the details on once I arrived. The woman at the counter was sooo sweet and incredibly helpful (I think her name was Lataevia?) but neglected to mention a lot of the specifics, including a breakdown of the costs (nope, never received a receipt, invoice, or anything of the nature in person--just the online receipt) of what I was paying or why. As a result, it was pretty confusing when I expected that 50% of my first month and was never informed that it had already been taken out when I first visited. (Shouts to Corey, the staff member who I called and who let me know that. Minus those shouts to Corey because he got pretty frustrated trying to explain all of this to me, which was hella unnecessary. His frustration was probably more representative of frustration with his coworker for not laying the groundwork and letting a playa know the fine print, but ain't nobody got time for you to work out your emotions on the customer's clock, boo.) I also was told I absolutely had to have their protection plan when I first signed up, which, according to Corey, was untrue. He said I'd be fine with my renter's insurance, which I already have. I know saving $12 may not matter to everyone, but it definitely matters to me. Every lil' penny 'bout to get plucked and pinched these days. All in all, I'd say A-1 is a decent storage facility! But you really have to make sure you're getting the full schpeel before you walk away from that counter with your precious card info or cash in their hands. They're worth it if you're looking for an okay location and a good unit, but not entirely worth it if you don't want to comb their contract for stuff that should be yours to know from the gate. read more

Don't be fooled by appearances. Yes, this place looks nice, safe, and secure but if you're concerned about random break-ins from local thieves -don't be. What you need to worry about is A1 and their "contracts" and definitely their ethics. Because once you put your stuff in their storage units you just gave them your things. You will loose everything in one swoop and you would have paid them probably several thousands of dollars beforehand too just so they can take you're stuff away from you. You're much better off at any other location even if it gets broken into most likely you'll still have most of your things whereas A1 will take everything in your whole unit per their policy small print and fees upon hidden fees and then sell it off to the highest bidder without a blink of a eye or a second thought for you, your loyalty, your belongings, your feelings or your finances. In fact the more they squeeze you for the better corporate ducks the become. And that's their whole goal to take more money from you and then take your stuff. WARNING Be prepared to pay double whatever you were quoted originally. Forget about discussing any billing practice or charges because they will just talk in circles around the issues while still sticking it to you. Their billing makes no sense, the charges seem to take on a life of their own and no one can explain why or how the charges got to be so large so quickly. It's like you're trying to discuss some ancient alien algebra. Lastly and final burn comes from your confiscated belongings and sold right under your nose. Even if you go online and try to buy your unit yourself they will have sold it to "someone" besides you at the eleventh hour for $5 more knowing you want your things and you've done everything humanly possible for them to give it back (outside of just breaking into your own unit and taking back your stuff) You won't get your stuff and you won't know until after it's gone. They are scandalous. You have no chance without fair business practices or empathy for hardships. To them It's all about business and business is only booming when they are collecting what's yours so do yourself a favor and rent somewhere, anywhere else because you will for sure loose here. read more

I have run my small home service company from a unit here at A-1 High St in Oakland for about 15 year. Recently, I needed to change to a larger unit and have to say that Corey, Dena and Rosa are just such a pleasure to work with. They got me another unit right on the waterfront, just 3 units down from where I was, making the move so easy (I love the view here, who knew you could have storage with a water view, it makes coming here daily for work so relaxing). They helped me with the transition, told me the best way to make the switch so that I would have time to move things over in an organized way and today I turned in the old units keys and actually had a credit to my account for a partial month. The first month is usually free and if open a storage unit, be sure and check in because they won't give you the three free moving boxes later on. The whole property including the restrooms are clean and tidy. Maybe it's cause this place is run by women. They always have upbeat music playing in the interior hallways which makes it pleasant and upbeat when your moving!!! read more

I have rented units from A-1 storage at the High St location in Oakland for 4 years. I am moving so I closed my account. Just wanted to express my gratitude for the excellent service I received from the staff there. Corey, the manager, worked with me on my 'moving target' of a timeline of moving out of my house so it could be sold and moving out of state, waiting to buy a house there. Corey and all the staff were extremely friendly, professional and above all I felt safe having my possessions there. Security is tight and I appreciated that! In & out access was easy, too, and the units were clean. I noticed whenever I was in my unit organizing or working, almost always a staff person walked by, which I appreciated. I'm not sure how a storage facility can be awesome, but this place is great! I'm selling my condo, so everything needed to go in storage. I had made a reservation at the place across the street, but I thought I'd made it at A-1. The competition across the street did not have very good "curb appeal." In fact, it looked a bit dodgy, so I drove across the street and rented a 10x10 unit on the spot. I didn't get the name of the woman who helped me (bad move!), but she couldn't have been friendlier or more professional or accommodating. She gave me a tour of the facility, explained the pricing structure and how everything worked and commiserated with the unpleasantness of packing and moving during the hottest weekend of the decade. Because of her, I returned twice to buy supplies. Great price. Fabulous service. Spotless, secure facility. I couldn't be more satisfied. read more

Good security, clean place. Unfortunately that is where the pros end. The units are significantly smaller than advertised (5x8 more like 3x8) but they tell you "size varies by unit" and they nickel and dime you for everything (insurance, special locks, etc). The manager is completely unhelpful and standoffish. I will be leaving this place ASAP. read more

Except for actually moving in, I'm echoing Sarah M.'s review, below. I'm also adding: I looked at many storage locations before renting at A-1 Storage. Why I chose A-1: * Accommodation for large moving trucks (not all storage facilities can do this!) * Drive-up access * Extra Large units (I initially rented a 10 x 30) * Safe, secure (each unit alarmed), clean * Friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff * Easy freeway access (close to the 880) * Flexible in holding unit while I was planning my move from SoCal to NorCal * Web and move-in specials Reasons I remain at A-1: * Easy to move within the facility, which was more of a luck and timing issue. When I downsized from the 10 x 30 to a 10 x 18, they had another drive-up unit, literally right across from mine * Convenient, extra-large freight elevator access to inside units (Downsized again, this time to an inside 10 x 10 on 3rd floor) In addition to Corey, I've also had good experiences working with other staff, including Dena and Rosa. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sarah M. 10/17/2019 This might be a bit of an unusual review, because I ended up having to rent a space closer to where I live. In addition to the pleasure of being helped out and shown around by Corey, the facility is really clean and spacious, and the security was the best I've seen. An added safety feature that I really appreciated, and did not see even in the more expensive places I checked out, is that they are set up for cylinder locks as well as padlocks on the units. If the travel time was just a little shorter, or if I wasn't going to need a lot of back-and-forth to the storage unit for the next few months, there's no question I'd have rented my unit from A-1 in Oakland. I'll definitely be keeping A-1 in mind for the future, if I end up having longer-term storage needs. read more

I was VERY happy to have my stuff stored here. I had originally reserved a spot at the High Street storage place on the corner, but as soon as I pulled up, I turned back around. That place looked darn-right creepy in the day time. I walked into A-1, got a decent rate on a good-sized space and was always happy to visit my stuff. No matter what the weather was like outside, the temp inside the facility was perfect. I made good use of the "gates open 'til 10pm" and always felt safe. It is very well-maintained, the staff always helpful, and area is bright and clean. My only minor gripe was the process involved in getting a key for the cart. I rarely needed one, but it was still kind of a hassle. But again, given everything else, it was something I was willing to put up with. I'd happily store here again. read more
