Last month I needed to rent a small storage unit for my son for one month. WOW, I was so IMPRESSED with the Fantastic customer service provided by Ladonna! Thieves broke into my unit through the thin cardboard walls via an adjacent unit. Read other reviews and you'll notice this has happened to others. Boxes cut open, items stolen. Both opposite walls were broken into meaning the thieves kept going through various units to steal items. Even worse than the theft was the staff reaction. Upon informing the staff they mentioned that the adjacent unit has been used to store their own cart and items for months / years which means the break in must have happened a while ago. They knew my unit was broken into for a long time and never informed me. I've been paying for hundreds of dollars a month to "store" items that were probably stolen years ago. The staffs reaction was 'business as usual'. Since I didn't have insurance I was SOL. Apparently this is common place for them. On top of everything prices are hiked up regularly (almost doubled over my time there). If value your belongings avoid this place and send your business elsewhere. read more

I have been a customer of Hayward Self-Storage for three years, and have had no problems or issues until recently (although the rent has increased at least twice). In mid-October 2016, my hallway storage unit was broken in to by someone cutting a hole from the adjacent unit in to my unit (see photo). (Hayward Self Storage informed me by telephone right before I left to go out of the country for a few weeks, so I couldn't view the unit until after I returned in mid-November 2016.) Whoever drilled the hole entered my unit and opened and went through many of the boxes, so the unit was a mess. A ceiling high rug had been knocked over when the person(s) entered; the Storage employee and I put it back. Luckily, nothing appeared to have been taken. I spent a few hours looking through the boxes to see if anything was missing, then cleaning up. I made a request to be credited with one month's rent ($104) for my time and trouble. The employee said he would check with the manager, who was not there. Not hearing back, today (Nov. 29) I called and spoke with Mike St. Clair, the district manager. He was not aware of my prior request. He declined to give the one month rental credit. His rationale was that if my house or apartment was broken in to, the insurance company would not pay for my time in cleaning it up. Last month, while driving home pondering this thought of moving and needing some space, I happened to look up and WHAM! Hayward Self Storage sign was looking me in the face, so i called and was very impressed. The Answering service was very professional and the transfer to Hayward was easy. The person who was helping me was ultra polite and set me up for a same day look at what they had. - this was a Sunday! For-sure i needed the largest they had, this was their 30x10x15 unit. I did not need it then, nor did they have one so i waited. I just moved in yesterday, started to prep the floors to be sealed and painted before i move in , because i am just like that. but by a surprise, they had up graded my area with an awesome metal cladding. - PIMPED OUT! I only ever went here twice (the day we moved stuff in back in May, and the day I closed out the storage this past weekend). Nick is super helpful and friendly, really easy to deal with, and honestly his level of service is 5-star. The reason for the 3 star rating is that there were FUCKING MICE in our storage. My movers pointed out the holes inside the building, the droppings on some of our stuff, and a fucking dead mouse. So. Gross. I don't know how often these units are checked, or even if the buildings are monitored for structural damage or what not, since this was my first time ever using a storage - but given what happened to some of our things, it will probably also be my last time! read more

Shady! False advertising! Bad customer service! This was the 2nd of a few storage place I planned to visit. I told the site manager this while she showed me the unit. To get me to stay and not keep looking she offered me half off my second month. I agreed. That night as I was moving things in I noticed a sign on the fence that said $1 for the first month. I hadn't noticed it earlier because I was focused on my GPS and finding the entrance. The next day I called to inquire as to why I was offered half off a second month and not given the advertised offer. I was told that they don't have any of those units available and that they aren't ever available. The rep said it has been brought up many times and she is not even sure why the sign is up. This is the definition of false advertising. To make matters worse I was not charged half off my 2nd month I was charged the entire amount and my checking account was overdrawn. I reached out to them and they admitted the problem on their end and apologized but offered no remedy for the fact they charged me double what they were supposed to and caused me to incur an overdraft fee. They offered no remedy at all except that the discount would now apply to next month's changes. I escalated this to district manager Mike St Clair who is hands down the most unprofessional district manager I have ever dealt with. He was rude and treated me as if the problems they created were an inconvenience to him. Last I check I was a paying customer and I was the one not only inconvenienced but also put in a dire situation with my account overdrawn. I am a mother of 5 off work with a ruptured calf muscle. This is more than a mistake to me this impacts my life and ability to care for my children. This is hands down the worst service I have ever received and now I have to figure out how to move my things out of here (the second move in a month)while injured and without a truck. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! read more

So I bought a unit that was on auction ,and the girl was cool ,but I have to say the unit was trash. It seemed that there were things missing, from the picture that was put up on auction website, and it smelled like rat piss. Come to find out the chick told me that they had sold the unit before and someone came and took some things out and then they put it up for auction again now I wonder how many times they have done that ? I'm so glad they got a new manager who seems to really care about the facility. I rented there almost 8 years & the cost went from $100 to $230-which I feel is excessive mark up to "take care of the facility" because there hasn't been much done that I could tell. The walls are thin as previously mentioned and the repairs done where there is damage are not secure looking. They finally have bait traps outside the units for the rodent problem. I too found lots of droppings in my unit & I was expected to clean them when I vacated the unit. They don't make it easy to dispose of garbage. The walk thru gate is padlocked during normal business hours. The garbage bin is on the opposite side of the gate & the latch is extremely difficult to move because one of the doors does not line up properly. read more

MY STUFF GOT STOLEN! So I was planning to post this four-five months ago in late October, early November 2016 when it actually occurred. But we were waiting for everything to be settled. Which has yet to happen...here's my post: Do not go here unless you want your belongings stolen! Their units have walls made of low pressure boards that are linked to neighboring units which makes it easy for tenants to cut a hole in the wall and STEAL your sentimental belongings. Oh and apparently they had a similar incident happen just recently, but they failed to warn other tenants. Unfortunately their insurance only covers $2,000 which doesn't even cover at least half the stuff stolen. The lady who was working there said she was gone for two weeks when the entire incident happened, then she offered to look thru the security cameras and send the info to the cops, but claimed that she wasn't allowed to share the footage with us. About two or so months later, we found that she was no longer with the storage company. We haven't even heard back from them about the incident. I read a review about numerous customers complaining about them raising their rates after the first month and a worker responded saying somewhere along the lines of "from time to time rates are readjusted to keep the facility clean and secure." Well why not use that money to build better walls??? People pay good money for security regardless of the rate increase!! Emails, banks, and even Facebook informs their users about when there are issues of unsecured login attempts or fraudulent attempts. The least this place can do is the same! This place is great! I moved from Southern California and needed a storage asap and started searching around the area. I called a couple of places but ended up choosing Hayward Self Storage for a couple of reasons. One, their prices are great! They were about half the price compared to other places around, especially if you snag a special! Secondly, the lady who helped me over the phone (Sarah) was the sweetest thing ever! She was so down to earth, and I hadn't even booked anything yet! Their storage is clean, the area's clean, there's 24 hour surveillance so I feel secure about my items, their customer service is great, and their prices are amazing! If all of that weren't enough, they send you an email every so often to check up on you and see how your unit's doing! What's not to like about them?!? We rented a unit here from September 2014 to March 2015. The entire facility is scrupulously clean and secure and the staff goes out of their way to help. After driving an hour to move our things out of the unit, we arrived to discover that we'd forgotten our key. Sharita and staff helped us out and we had no trouble closing out the bill or with prorating problems. Billing was clear and they updated us on billing while we were living out of the area, so we never risked missing a payment. Highly recommend them. read more

Prices are good never an issue there. Watch out for water damages if you have a hallway unit. I recently filed a claim for some items that were ruined and severely molded. The insurance company denied my claim as they said surface damage is not covered. I can tell you that likely it seemed the hallway at one point had been washed down and water seeped into my unit. The stuff that was ruined was right by the door an wall closest to the door. I paid insurance apparently for no reason, some items are not even replaceable. Next time I get a unit I will make sure to to look further into it. What a horrible experience to have your stuff ruined for neglect. I actually believe the other units next to mine should be looked into as well, I am sure they have some damage. read more
