My tagline has been "there's a food truck for that" for as long as I can remember so I'm always down to try the latest truck on the scene. Justin and Lakana are a sweet, generous, and passionate couple who crank out some great Northern Thai food. My favorite was the Moo Ping: juicy pork skewers that is street food at its best. I also enjoyed the Pad Kapow Moo which is spicy pork and basil topped with a fried egg - I imagine it'd be a great lunch. Dee Dee Indeed!! With a hankering for Thai food, I searched Yelp for something in my neighborhood and decided to give Dee Dee a try! The trailer was fairly busy on a Thursday night around 8pm. We ordered the Pad Kra Pow (pork), the Om Gai (chicken), and Som Tom papaya salad. Since they were busy, we waited about 15-20 minutes, which I didn't think was that long. When our food was almost ready, the owner apologized for the wait and gave us some sparkling waters! A very nice gesture! We took our food to-go and dug in when we got home. Everything was super fresh and delicious with complex flavors. My favorite dish was the Pad Kra Pow, which packs a spicy punch balanced with fresh herbs and cucumber. The papaya salad was super spicy, delicious, and refreshing! My boyfriend's fav dish was the Om Gai, which was less spicy but still super aromatic and flavorful. Portions are large and we were stuffed with plenty left over for lunch the next day. Awesome spot. Thai and Indian food are my favorites and my buddy Darren told me he'd found a favorite new Thai place. Actually, to be honest he said he'd found the only decent Thai restaurant in ATX. Bold statement since I like Titaya's but I'll give you that it's not the best. I know Austin can do better and I'd say trailers like Dee Dee are great because they will keep the other "authentic" Thai places on their toes. From the moment you order you can see that the couple running this place has their act together. The kitchen is beautifully organized and the simplicity of the menu tells me that they are out picking up the best ingredients regularly and then selling everything til it's gone. I ordered Pad Ka Pow along with some Mango sticky rice and both were outstanding. Even better might have been the experience of just waiting for your food and smelling all the herbs, etc. wafting through the air. Prepare yourselves, when they say their food is spicy know that they are serious. If you put all the sauce on the Pad Ka Pow prepare to cry a little during your meal. Loved it. I went to Dee Dee's a couple days ago and can't stop thinking about how great this place is. The menu is short and sweet, everything is great, so I won't recommend any dishes - you'll be happy with everything. Since its Northern Thai Street food, this place is different (i.e. better) than what you would expect from the typical Thai places all over town. Its so flavorful and some of the best dishes you've never had before. The sticky rice was amazing and I love how they encourage you to eat the dish with the sticky rice and not silverware, the real way of eating these dishes. If they ever think of expanding the menu offerings, I'd be more than happy to try some Thai breakfast street food.... ;) ;) read more

I've been fortunate enough to try everything on the menu at this point, and you simply can't go wrong with any dish. Chef Lakana, born and raised in Thailand, and now recent transplant to Austin via her Husband and Co-Owner Justin, have created something very special here. I proudly claim this to be the best Thai I've had in Austin. First, this is Authentic Thai. You'll find dishes that are traditionally served in Northern Thailand, most of which includes pork, basil, sticky rice, and an array of sauces (from sweet to spicy). Don't expect to come her and order Pad Thai and Tom Ka Gai. Second, it's cooked fresh, made to order by the Chef. There's no pre-packaging, or assembly line style prep. This is truly homemade, fresh cookin' to perfection. Third, It's BYOB! Lastly, the people behind the counter. Justin & Lakana are just plain friendly, and understand good customer service. They've stayed true to authenticity and are very helpful and happy to educate their customers on the food in all of its deliciousness. PS - My recommendations would be the Moo Ping (pork skewers) and Pad Kapow (sticky rice, pork, fried basil, with an egg on top). So good! read more

3.5 stars Came for lunch and thankfully breezed past the 50 people standing in line for La BBQ and quickly ordered. I got 2 of the Moo Ping, (pork skewers) and the Om Gai. I was told it'd be a while as the pork was still thawing, which kind of made me leery, but they looked so good in the photos so I went with it. Food arrived in about 15 minutes and any worries about the pork being frozen was gone as it was some of the most flavorful and juicy pork I've had and while they seemed smaller than I was expecting from the photos, they were absolutely delicious. Unfortunately I wasn't nearly as big a fan of the Om Gai. The chicken itself was completely bland and seemed poached or steamed with no seasoning or color at all. The broth was somewhat more flavorful and there was lots of dill in the dish, but I wasn't a fan of the overall flavor and it just seemed a bit dull compared to the bolder flavor of the pork and the salty, spicy, sour, fish sauce based (i assume) dipping sauce that came with it. Unfortunately the dessert price was mislabeled during my visit so I passed on that, and while my first dish wasn't my favorite, they seem to make quality food here so I'd definitely return to try more on the menu and load up on the Moo Ping. read more

This place has been on our to-do list for a while. Don't be deterred if there is a wait, it is well worth it... Also there is a great bar next door to lol some time. To the food, get an order or two of the moo ping. So well-seasoned and ridiculously tender. Also, the pad ka pow is a must-try. Do not underestimate the little container of hot sauce that come me with the pad ka pow, it is deliciousness but straight fire. We tried Dee Dee today and loved it. My recommendation is the Moo Ping. I'm Thai and can guarantee that it is delicious and authentic. The pork was perfectly cooked and the sticky rice was soft and tender. Justin and Lakana were both super sweet and honest. We ordered sticky rice and mango and they told us that the mango wasn't ready. At other restaurants people wouldn't really care and just sell it to you anyway. Will definitely come back even though we'll probably have to fight 30 mins of traffic to get there. read more

Not overhyped AT ALL. We waited 50 minutes and it was soooo worth the wait. Best Thai for the price, easy. Perhaps best Thai in Austin or at least tied with my other favorite. I'm a non meat-eater with friends that love texas bbq. Luckily, I don't have to settle for the smoky sides at labbq anymore. After I tried their dishes, I decided that they stood out in a league of their own in the food truck plaza what I used to refer to as the labbq plaza. Dee Dee is now one of the few asian foods in Austin that I would consider both "authentic" and vegetarian in Austin that's south of chinatown. (vs somewhere like East side king which adds duck fat into their rice). Bonus, they provide sunscreen and mosquito repellent at their window! Exceptional thai food. It was our last meal before leaving Austin and it was definitely worth the stop and the 45 min wait (we arrived around 2:30pm on a Sunday). It was our first time having Pad Ka Pow, which was very flavorful and delicious. The laab was also great, a wonderful mix of spice and acid with heat that builds in your mouth. Family was waiting in line for La Barbecue but I got impatient and I love Thai food so I walked over to Dee Dee food truck, and it was the best decision I have ever made!!! I got the Pad Ka Mow and it was delicious. Egg was cooked to perfection, spice was not unbearable but definitely there, and the flavors of everything blended so well together!!! I came here during lunch and La BBQ in the same lot had a huge line and this place did not. I think all those people missed out on something special for sure. The Pad Ka Pow kicked my taste buds in the mouth. So flavorful, so spicy. The little box it came in was adorable and the food itself was a great portion size! My favorite place in Austin right now. Expect to wait 20 minutes for your food but it's so worth it. Pad ka pow - 5 - really delicious, very spicy. Love the cold cucumber to balance the heat. The basil and egg are perfect. Om gai - 4 - soupy, great flavor, also spicy Laab moo - 4 - sorta similar to pad ka pow but different herbs and no egg Thai tea - 4 - tasty, sweet. Would probably be great with the spice of the food but I usually finish it before I get my food (but he asks if you want it now or with the food) Really looking forward to trying the rest of the menu and looking forward even more to tasting the whole menu so I can just get pad ka pow every time. Dee Dee is an awesome food truck, and I'll definitely be back when I'm craving good Thai food! I came here with friends on a Friday night. Parking is just on the street, the lot next to the food truck park enforces towing, but I parked in another private lot for a nearby bar and didn't have any trouble (disclaimer: use your best judgement and don't rely solely on my recommendation that you won't get towed). There is plenty of seating outdoors and Dee Dee's provides bug spray and citronella candles for the tables. Most of the night, there was a line to order ranging from 3-7 people. When we ordered, the cashier noted that there would be a 20-25 minute wait to get our food because they were busy. We were super hungry, but our food came out faster than anticipated and was well worth any wait! I had the Pad Ka Pow (light spice) and our group shared the Mango Sticky Rice. One person had the Thai tea and said that it was great. The Pad Ka Pow was fantastic! The fried egg adds a lot, and if you're a baby about spicy things (like me) the cucumber is a good way to cool down your mouth between bites. The serving was generous and I had enough to take home for lunch the next day (it reheats well). The highlight of the night was the Mango Sticky Rice. There was plenty between four people and the mango was pretty high quality. I'll probably be back for this alone! There are a few bars within walking distance (Stay Gold, next to the food truck park, has good drinks and live music), so dinner at Dee Dee's would be a great way to start a night out! read more

Service: amazing, super kind & helpful, tells you all about the dish & how it should be eaten for the best experience. The wait was 20 min which is no sweat but to our surprise several people picked a different trailer just because of the wait time...let me tell you people it is so worth it when you are getting this quality of a dish from 1 cook which I am a huge fan of because I am very swayed to come back or not depending on the consistency of a dish/restaurant. Plus 20 min is totally regular when going to any restaurant I suppose people are in a rush but certainly not us. Food: what can I say other than holy cow so delicious!! They claim they need to add a lot of spiciness to their food because eliminating spiciness would screw up the flavor profile. I claim they add excess spiciness to their food so people don't realize the dishes consist of taco meet and mediocre sticky rice. This is the best northern Thai food I've ever had in the US. I ordered the laab moo and the pickled salad, and both were just phenomenal. I didn't realize quick-pickled veggies could be that delicious. As for the laab--WOAH SPICY!! Authentically spicy--so much so that I, a lover of scorpion pepper hot sauces who barely blinks an eye at a habanero--needed extra sticky rice to get through it (and even still, my nose and eyes were running). The heat is not without purpose, though--the incredible balance of savory and acidic flavors has me completely addicted. I can't wait to try the rest of the menu. They also get 11/10 stars for service. As slammed as they were, every employee--including the owners cooking in the back--was smiling and having a blast. They were incredibly attentive--quick to greet everyone in line, upfront about things that might be issues for some customers (spice level, wait times, 86ed items), and incredibly organized for the volume of business they had to handle out of one tiny truck. The cashier quoted me a 40-minute wait time but my food came out in about 25. And despite being incredibly busy, they take the time to text each customer when their order is ready, so you can literally go and do whatever you want while your food is being prepared--unlike a buzzer or name-calling system that would force you to wait in the vicinity. I am and always will be a diehard Veracruz Taco fan, but Dee Dee's definitely holds their own at Radio. One way I judge restaurants is by how far I would be willing to drive just to eat their food. Dee Dee is 4.3 miles from where we live. My family all agree that we would be willing to drive a far longer distance and time just to taste their wonderfully herbal and spicy om gai, the delicious and soul-satisfying larb moo, and even their complement of perfectly made sticky rice. No wonder the Austin Chronicle's Brandon Watson (whose reviews we HIGHLY recommend) wrote: "When you are making food this good ... this worth the effort, you have to believe that a humble trailer is just the beginning." Wow...we stopped by for the first time last night everything we ordered was amazing! We came armed with a couple beers and water but the mosquitos managed to chase us away. they had bug spray and even citronella candles but those little buggers were still hovering around me so we got it to o. In hindsight, we should have gone to the craftman next door while our food was prepared. I pulled out the siracha when we got home but there was no need for that! This food packed some serious heat! My mouth was on fire but in a good way. Could not stop eating Pad Ka Pow...if you get nothing else, just get this! Larb was also tasty and spicy. We ended the meal with the sticky mango rice. While this dish looks unassuming, it was the perfect way to end the meal as it immediately took away the heat in our mouths. This was another dish that I would come back for. SOOOO good. Thoroughly enjoyed the Larb Moo- pork in a spicy broth with a ton of fresh herbs and sticky rice to sop up the deliciousness. I got thai spicy and oh man did I love it. Probably my favorite food truck in Austin. Great food, great employees, great price point. My wife and I probably eat here once a week and I wish it was more often than that. Moo ping and Pad-Kapow are the go-to but dishes along with their mango sticky rice for dessert which is dumb good. Other dishes like Laab Moo are also great as well and they'll adjust spice levels as needed for the faint of heart or those that want to kick it up a notch. Can't wait to get out to the new location at Radio and give their Sunday rotisserie chickens a try. The pork dishes are awesome! Spicy and aromatic. But the Om Gai chicken had a strange taste which made it quite inedible to me unfortunately. Good portions, definitely enough for at least one. Parking can be a little bit of a hassle since it is on the East side. I ordered the Thai Larb. I requested not to be too spicy as my stomach can't handle too much spice. The owner was super nice and understandable with my request. My dish I ordered was AMAZING! Great spices mixed with the ground pork that will leave your mouth watering for more. I ended my trip in Austin with my go-to food which was Thai food. I'm Thai and I know how authentic Thai food should be. Dee Dee surprised me in a fantastic way! Their pad ka pow was insanely exceptional!!! The flavor was on point, no veggies like bell peppers, onions, or carrots in the dish which was really thoughtful! I'm about to cry, seriously!!! The rice was perfectly cooked and the pork was great! Flavor wise was DELICIOUS! Perfect amount of heat and spicy. I also loved their selection of the menu. No need to be complicated but super authentic. And one more thing I loved about Dee Dee was the service, the person who took my order (sorry I didn't ask his name), he knows what's he doing!
