Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake is creamy, delicious, and fluffy. One important note: this is Japanese-style cheesecake, not a typical New York-style or grocery store cheesecake, so it's good to have the right expectations before trying it. It's lighter, softer, and more delicate. We also tried the tarts, including ube and matcha, and they were very delicious as well. Overall, it's a great spot if you enjoy lighter, fluffy desserts and want to try something a little different.
Why 5 stars? Because apparently I'm a Japanese cheesecake guy now. --- --- --- While eating lunch nearby, I Yelped "sweets" and Uncle Tetsu was one of the first places to pop up. Japanese cheesecake, you say? I don't even really know what that is, but I'm intrigued. So I took my intrigued self down the road and popped in here. Upon walking in, there was some treats in the display case that were maybe donut-sized, at most. So I thought, hey, I'll go ahead and order three of these things because I'm a growing boy. The cashier rung me up and I tapped my watch on the Apple Pay thing immediately. But before I even realized what I'd done, I saw her bringing out 3 boxes that were about 3x bigger than the things in the case. it turned out, those were some kind of little tarts, while the cheesecakes are, you guessed it, about 3x bigger than those. So my little post lunch snack just turned into 3 cakes, of which I'd be taking some home to the family. But hey, it turns out, I love Japanese cheesecake, despite my mishap. Pandan was the highlight of the bunch (also grabbed an Oreo and an Ube). Some people might not like the texture, but that was the highight for me. It makes it seem not overwhelmingly sweet, but it also totally hits the spot for that ever-constant sugar craving after I eat. This was a huge win for me, despite getting way more than I came for.

I believe this may be a smaller Uncle Tetsu and might not have every item but they have most things. They had samples available and for my first visit, I was able to get a good impression of select items! I had the opportunity to sample a piece of their cheesecake biscotti and matcha cheesecake. I asked for a recommendation as a first time and was told I have to try the original to start. Service seemed friendly but felt a little rushed for me to hurry up. Cheesecake Biscotti - from my small slice, I was impressed. It's an airy cookie that's baked to a crispy finish. The exterior is crispy but the inside is fluffy, it's a fun texture that simply feels remarkable. Plus the overall cheesecake flavor is a delightful sweetness. Matcha Cheesecake - I was impressed with the softness. The small sample was so light yet ready to fall from the toothpick at any moment. It was just so delicate. Matcha was present though it's hard to say how strong from a quick sample so I'll reserve on that. Original Cheesecake - now for the real experience, it's no exaggeration to say that this quite literally melts in your mouth. It's almost like the cake simply dissolves, leaving a cheesecake flavor behind. Super fluffy, light, and airy, the cheesecake is delicate and when you eat it, your taste buds light up as if a spotlight is emphasizing the presentation. Fantastic end to any meal as well, especially because it's not heavy at all.
Overall, I thought the experience at Uncle Testu was pretty solid. While I am biased given I've had actual Basque cheesecake in Basque Country, I gave this a 5* based on a few factors: 1) Friendliness of staff, service and a place that offers samples once you walk in...in this economy is a win! Tried the Ube Japanese style cheesecake. Was absolutely lovely. Light, fluffy, had a good flavor. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Bright, lively decor and a good amount of seating for a small shop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] 2) Their flavors for Japanese style & tarts, were fantastic. It's in a predominantly Asian food area, so what they specialize in...they do well. 3) Basque Cheesecake - This is a good rendition for USA. It's not as super creamy or indulgent as you'll get in Spain, and to expect that isn't fair. The flavor notes of citrus shine a little bit more predominantely than I'd like, losing some of the cheese flavor. The cook on it was slightly more than I'd like too, as you lose the creaminess. BUT that's also likely due to the supply of dairy here in USA vs what you'd get in Europe. HOWEVER, this is a FANTASTIC Cheesecake comparatively to USA Cheesecakes. Better than any chains, better than NY Style cheesecake (As a NYC Native, come at me bro if you find this to be a controversial statement. OVERALL - Uncle Testu is a FANTASTIC choice for dessert, individually or to take home back to the family. Highly recommended.

The menu is somewhat constrained in that you can only get full cheesecakes rather than individual slices. [[HIGHLIGHT]]No indoor seating options, so all the orders are essentially takeout.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My friend and I opted for the Ube cheesecake ($14.00, 4/5). - This cheesecake was light and fluffy with a gorgeous purple color - Ube flavor is pretty subtle Overall if you're a fan of Japanese cheesecakes and/or more light desserts, this place is worth checking out! With the portion size, it's also good for splitting and sharing with others. Would be open to coming back and trying some of their other cheesecake flavors & menu options.

They have the most fluffy, cute looking Japanese cheesecakes in delightful flavors including s'mores, strawberry, ube and more. It was nice to have a sample up front as I had never tried this type of a cheesecake before so appreciated the chance to taste it before buying.
I had the opportunity to try these cheesecakes at the Food Land festival in Austin. They were very light and fluffy. Very different from your traditional cheesecake. I enjoyed the taste and the texture. They were the perfect treat to wrap a fun day at the festival. The staff at the stand were very nice and explained all of the details about the different flavors. They also have various flavors that honestly all sound intriguing (it was hard to make a choice!). I wasn't sure how I felt initially, but it grew on me. I think it'd make a great gift or sweet snack for a gathering. If you haven't tried it I'd encourage you to at least once! I plan to go back and try another flavor someday soon. The service itself was very quick and friendly, and [[HIGHLIGHT]]the interior is clean and modern.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking can be a hassle but if you try hard you will succeeeeed.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The location is small but clean and organized[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] - I really liked that they had samples of sakura cheesecake to try because that's what I ended up buying. The cake is a dream - perfect size for 2 people to share; extra fluffy, floral but just the right amount of sweetness. Looking forward to coming back and trying more flavors!

Sweet, cool, full of flavor, creamy cheesecake desserts like I had in Taiwan. Uncle Tetsu's shop is small but filled with many choices of the Japanese cheesecake. The small size was enough to feed 3, of course someone had to have seconds. read more

The first time I had Uncle Tetsu abroad I was like woah, wishing we had one closer to home and as luck would have it they are now here in ATX! I went during opening day and was a bit surprised about the size of their storefront but to be honest I never spend a ton of time inside. I usually go in, see what peaks my interest, such as seasonal offerings or weekend specials and then tell the cashier, get rung up and on my way! During our initial visit we bought both the Japanese cheesecake in original and strawberry flavor and the ube burnt basque cake and I must say what a contrast. The Japanese cheesecake is super light with a profile most similar to angel cake but less sweet and less dense. In contrast, the basque almost reminded me of a pudding/custard, thicker but still light, and not overly sweet. If the basque wasn't double the price of their traditional Japanese cheesecake I would handsdown choose this, however due to cost I tend to pick the Japanese cheesecake. In terms of flavor, note that all of these flavors are quite subtle if you choose the Japanese cheesecake version. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of them, but I especially enjoyed the pandan one and wasn't a fan of the oreo as it tasted more like the original to me. If you are looking for more flavor, I'd recommend the burnt basque as it is more flavorful and even tasted a bit like caramel to me. Oh, and be sure to join their loyalty program as all those cakes add up! read more
This was our first time trying their cheesecakes and tart ("Also, did you know it's the same company as Panda Express ?or I should say Panda Restaurant Group owns the US franchise operators. Me either!"). We got there early right when they opened so we were the only ones there. AMBIANCE/LOCATION: It's a cute little store with no seating inside, just a grab & go. There are plenty of parking spaces since it's located in a shopping center (The Crescent) on Airport Blvd. SERVICE: The staff was friendly and helpful. We got their original cheesecake, Ube burnt basque cheesecake, and a Matcha tart to take home! They also have a reward stamp card (buy 9 cakes get the 10th free which is awesome...and dangerous). DESSERTS: Their ORIGINAL CHEESECAKE is super soft, fluffy (I want to curl my face up to it ), delicious, and lightly sweet --which I love! However, it can be dangerous like I mentioned since I can just keep eating. In my opinion, this Japanese cheesecake tastes like a cross between a Hokkaido cake, and a soufflé-like cake but lighter or less rich like American cheesecake. The UBE BURNT BASQUE CHEESECAKE is UBE-LICIOUS, smells so good, fluffy, with a soft, custard-like texture and that flavorful burnt/smoky top and edges is everything (I am also a sucker for that deep stunning purple color). Their MATCHA TART was so delish as well, but it's different than other tarts I'm used to. Their crust texture and taste are like a shortbread cookie. The matcha cheesecake filling has very subtle matcha flavor when biting with the crust, but if you just eat the filling alone you can taste a pleasant flavor of matcha with a hint of bitterness from the matcha itself. I really enjoyed it very much! Now we'll have to try their Ube tart next time! VERDICT: All-in-all, if you love cheesecake and desserts that are not too sweet, you will love this place, and if purple and delicious are your jam--you are all set here! read more
It's the best dessert place in Austin. It's Japanese cheesecake, the soft and fluffy kind of cheesecake. It's not as dense and cheesy like the American one. For first-timers, you should go with original cheesecake. It's still my favorite. Pandan coconut and Ube are definitely worth trying. I'm not the biggest fan of pumpkin spice so I can't comment on the flavor. read more
i'm not a typical cheesecake lover but when it comes to japanese cheesecake Uncle Tetsu does it so well. I tried the original and ube. they were both soft, creamy and delicious, not too sweet. i would highly recommend if you've never tried japanese style cheesecake before. the service was so nice, they helped us choose which flavors to buy and even gave us a slice as a sample! will definitely come back! read more
Located in the shopping center (my GPS directed me wrong and thankfully someone posted a picture of the outside which helped me locate the store) this is a small bakery that is basically pick up and go spot as there is no seating available. I walked in and was greeted, a sample was offered (but I wanted to try with the other folks I was buying for) and I asked lots of questions as this was new to me. I ended up grabbing the Oreo cheesecake and also grabbed a tart. As for my liking, the cheesecake was not really to my liking. I expected it to be something besides what I got and it wasn't as sweet as I am use to cheesecakes being (yes I know most Asian desserts aren't as sweet as American sweets) however none the less I can say that I have tried this. Now, the tart was delicious! I was upset that I had only gotten one and that I was sharing the one I got with two other people. The tarts I would definitely go back for however my sister really enjoyed the cheesecake. read more

I was excited to finally try Uncle Tetsu after hearing about this opening in Austin. (There's one opening in Houston, where I'm from, so I got to try it before Houston location opened.) Sad to say that I left expecting more. Small storefront located in a shopping strip of other Asian businesses (bbq chicken, Daiso, kinokinuya, etc.), where there's plenty of parking. When you walk in the store, there's no seating available. You see the display of cakes and them making the cheesecakes in the back. There were samples available of one of their cheesecakes and their cheese tarts (which are only available on the weekends). Sampled the chocolate cheesecake and wasn't too impressed. My family and I decided to buy the ube cheesecake. I honestly wanted to get the ube basque cheesecake, but they didn't have a sample. :( Maybe I'm just not a fan of the Japanese style cheesecake - it's very light and fluffy, almost comparable to an angel cake or castella. Also, the ube flavoring was so subtle, barely tasted any ube. That was disappointing. I think I would've enjoyed the consistency of a basque cheesecake. Perhaps I'll have to try it sometime at the Houston location. I do wish they were able to sell single slices though.. it's tough for one person who just wants a piece rather than a whole cake to themselves. Service was friendly and attentive though, I do appreciate that. I would recommend people to try this if they enjoy a light and fluffy cheesecake rather than a very rich NY style cheesecake. read more
My first time having Japanese cheesecake and I am so happy! Wonderful service and friendly staff! They have free samples of the pandan flavor cheesecake and if no one was looking I would've ate the whole tray. I got the original cheesecake just because it's my first time and I wanted to try it in its original form. It was super fluffy, airy, moist and a sponge cake/bread texture but lot softer! I really like this cheesecake because it's so light that you can eat it any time of day, it doesn't even feel like dessert! The store is for picking up the cakes only, there are no seating area so I took bites of the cheesecake in the car and it barely made it home. Overall definitely give this place a try if you haven't had Japanese cheesecake! You won't regret it! read more

These are not American cheesecakes. If a sponge cake and a plain omelet had a baby, you'd have your "original" Uncle Tetsu cheesecake right there. They are lightly sweet and spongy. I think they'd be tons better with fresh fruit or chocolate or coconut syrups, but then I have a mean sweet tooth. I take coffee with my sugar. Three weeks ago, Austin became the first American city outside of California to have an Uncle Tetsu bakery shop. The chain may have been founded in Japan but is today wholly owned by the American company that gave us the Panda Express. LOCATION Google Maps and Waze are crazy-baffled by Uncle Tetsu's address so let me set you straight. This takeout bakery is located inside Crescent Plaza, the large strip mall at the intersection of Airport Blvd and Lamar. I remember when Beto had his campaign headquarters here. Today the mall is a little Tokyo of sorts... Nearly every restaurant and retail outlet is Japanese and Ranch 99 - an Asian supermarket - serves as the anchor. Lots to discover here. Plenty of attractive Japanese people are customers here. INSIDE There's no seating here. Just takeout. Flavors: coffee, ube, original, strawberry and chocolate for $13 each and two "burnt basque" options (original and ube), which have been broiled, crème brûlée style for $23 each. We tried the most popular flavor - the original - and also the burnt basque ube cake. I am not a fan. But Uncle Tetsu doesn't need me. They are quite popular all over Asia, the Middle East, and even Canada. California has a bunch of them. I think they'll prosper. read more
It's so good that our little foster chihuahua has ruined TWO cheesecakes... $48 worth!!! One because my husband left it on the couch on a plate. Not her fault bc it was just right there asking to be eaten. And two because we had a New Year's party and our little Chihuahua jumped up to the kitchen island and pulled down on the paper that was underneath the cheesecake. This was 3/4 of a cheesecake. Probably the best day of her life besides the first one that she stole from the couch. So since she ruined the other two cheesecakes and my husband never had a chance to try it, I went and bought an Ube Basque cheesecake. The staff told me the difference between the normal Japanese cheeks cakes, and the basque cheesecake. The basque is European style and denser with a slightly burned crust. A small Uncle Tetsu storefront, but one that sells all the essential Uncle Tetsu cheesecakes. If you come early enough in the day, there are samples of the cheesecake for you to try. I got to sample the strawberry cheesecake, which was light and fluffy with a hint of strawberry flavor. Uncle Tetsu is known for its light and fluffy cheesecakes that are a hybrid between Japanese milk bread and cheesecake. They have a "not-too-sweet" flavor profile and are delicious on their own. I also tried the burnt ube cheesecake (not pictured), which has a hint of ube and is more akin to traditional cheesecake. The "burnt" flavor compliments the texture and flavors of the cheesecake well. Both types of cheesecakes are worth the try if you've never had either before. I was excited to hear that we got a Japanese cheesecake in ATX but after having it, it was not what I expected. I have had Japanese cheesecake from Osaka and Basque cheesecake in Basque country (San Sebastian) and I was disappointed with the purchase I made today. I went for the Japanese cheesecake and the cake I got was moist and soft but not fluffy and jiggly. Japanese cheesecake can bounce, these did not. Just a moist cake. Basque cheese cake is unique, like a melted brie like. The cake here is like a moist cake again. Almost mushy. When I was at the store and tried the strawberry Japanese cake the sample piece just all fell apart. Both type of cake should not do that. My biggest regret was not getting more than one Japanese cheesecake!!!!! The Japanese cheesecake was amazing, I can't wait to try the other flavors. read more

What the heck! This place is the best!! We bought three cheesecakes for our party (original, Oreo and ubi). The party is tonight so we wanted to try one and chose the purple ubi one. Tell it on the mountains! It's Devine! I don't even know how to describe it. It's delicious. It's light. We thought it might be spongy like angel cake but it's not. It was moist but airy. I just don't know how to explain it but we ate it up! Ube is like a purple sweet potato I believe but it had a very light vanilla flavor to it. Sooo good!! Highly recommend and can't wait to eat the other two tonight! read more
Cute small space. Definitely this is a togo place, there is not any tables. Got there around 1:15 on a thursday and they had pandan samples. It was very light and airy, the pandan flavor barely came through. Love the abundance of flavor options. Great service. read more

Coming from a not-a-fan-of-American desserts girl, Uncle Tetsu is appropriately for you. If you haven't had a chance to stop by at one of the hottest new bakeries in town, what's stopping you!? Uncle Tetsu offers 2 kinds of cheesecakes: the Basque and the Japanese, both in various flavors. The Basque ($23) would be described as the heavier sister of the Japanese Cheesecake, as it's more dense, less fluffy, and a whole lotta cream cheese. It's a bit reminiscent of a regular cheesecake, but less sweetened. As for the Japanese Cheesecake ($13), the more popular sister, she's fluffy, airy and reminiscent of a hybrid between a mousse/sponge cake. Both are delicious, and depends on your mood, but if you're feeling adventurous, why not order both and see for yourself? I bought the Basque Cheesecake in Ube and the regular Japanese Cheesecake and can attest both were perfect! read more
