The original inspiration for the Pie Bar is in Lubbock, Texas. A couple then decided to open one in Austin, during the pandemic, on South Congress just north of Slaughter Lane. There's a variety of cold mousse pie fillings at the counter that looks just like an ice cream display, and you can fill either a personal sized chocolate or blonde pie crust with up to two scoops of your choice. There are also options for warm cobbler fillings, or classic premade desserts if you don't want to go through the trouble of making your own. I went with a cookie dough mousse pie filling with pb cups on top, and it was tasty but did start to melt since I eat slowly. The server was really friendly and personable, and the dining area is a great place to hang out with plenty of seating, a fireplace, and boardgames. Such a cute and cozy space and the pies are amazing!! I recently stopped by while visiting the massive HEB across the street and was thrilled that they offer gluten free mousse + a gluten free pie crust! They have daily mouse options, in addition to their standard flavors, and I am obsessed with the lemon custard and their standard chocolate mousse. Delicious! The gluten free pie crust has almost a sugar cookie flavor to it and is probably the best gluten free pie crust I've ever had. The prices are incredibly reasonable as well, with a pint of mousse costing ~$8 and a pie costing ~$6-7 depending on the flavor. There is NO UPCHARGE for getting the gluten free crust and they also offer full-sized gluten-free pies for $25.... So I already know where I'm getting my pies this thanksgiving! Outside of having an incredible menu, the employees are also lovely. Every time I've asked for a gluten free pie, they've been very thorough with preventing any gluten contamination and just very friendly and welcoming as a whole. This is also a great place to spend some time, with comfortable and cozy seating, a fireplace, and board games available. Plenty of free parking outside in the open lot, and easily accessible as well. Honestly, this has quickly become on e of my favorite dessert shops in Austin and it's always a treat when I get to stop by! I was in town watching a friend's gang of cats and dogs when one of the dogs decided to be super dog-like and eat something he wasn't supposed to. We loaded up to the vet and after a hectic appointment, I decided that I needed a sweet treat. I was super happy to see that Pie Bar was less than a mile away from the clinic and could fulfill my need for a sweet treat. I called prior to arriving to confirm that I could bring the naughty pup in with me and was told I could, as we were just doing a pickup. The cashier was lovely in answering my questions about how all of this worked and she also asked questions and fawned over my canine companion. The spot itself was super cute and it had an area for sitting and enjoying your pie and a stack of board games. The cherry on top, if you will, was that the pie was literally incredible. I did one pre-designed banana cream pie and one BYO pie which was a peanut butter and chocolate number with crumbly toppings. Pie Bar specializes in desserts, specifically mousse. Unlike the mousse I'm used to, these are served on a crust, like a pie. So it's more like a mousse-pie hybrid than a proper mousse, really. I visited Pie Bar with my friend the other night and I ordered a coffee as well as a Mexican chocolate mousse. I have just come back from a trip to France so my comparative scale is forever ruined. All American desserts taste like dirt compared to masterful French pastries and desserts. It's like night and day. But even if I take a step back and attempt to be objective, refraining from comparing apples with golden oranges, Pie Bar is still just okay. The mousse-pie chimera I ordered wasn't bad. I ate all of it. But it also wasn't great. It didn't taste like Mexican chocolate. There was nothing Mexican about it. It was just chocolate mousse on a chocolate crust with whip and chocolate chips sprinkled on top. There were no other discernable spices, not even cinnamon, nutmeg or chili. Nothing. It wasn't special or memorable. The coffee was also okay. Neither great but also not too bad. Looking for a quick fix for your sugar addiction? This place might do, if you don't really care too much about what you're eating. Don't expect anything more and you won't be disappointed. EDIT: I appreciate the business owner answering my review. I totally understand that these spices might appear in the ingredients list but I just could not taste then at all. Maybe ramp up the cinnamon a bit? Or make a survey among your customers to see if they can really detect the "Mexican" element of the Mexican chocolate? It might be that people are just happy that it's a chocolate pie, period. This is a cute place! I've never seen a mainstream pie shop before so this was a first for me. I like that there are different dessert types - they have pies but also cookies and ice cream and mousse which you can buy by the scoop. I got a simple single scoop of mousse with one topping, which is $4.50. They do let you sample the mousses too, and I picked the brownie batter which is sweet like chocolate but not so much so that it's overwhelming. My friend got one of the turtle mini cheesecakes which I sampled and that was sooo smooth and creamy. The staff were friendly and helpful and the vibes inside are really nice! They have some high tables, regular tables, corner soft chairs, and even a little electric fireplace with a couch and some chairs and a coffee table right in front of it. The place isn't huge, but it's big enough that it doesn't feel crowded at all. Overall, it's a really great dessert spot! I only knocked off a star because if prices were a bit lower it would REALLY knock my socks off but given the novelty of it, I don't think prices are bad either (eg a DIY mini pie is like $7, and sizing up the prices increase from there). Would definitely recommend any dessert lover give this place a try, it could even be good to study there during the day when it's quiet. read more
