I came into Upper Crust Bakery for some of their delicious cranberry walnut sweet bread. It is sweet and tangy simultaneously. Also the different textures are appealing as well - soft sweet bread converging with crunchy walnuts. It is so good! Upper Crust Bakery is my "go to" bakery when I am hosting a party that has associated dessert. My favorite cakes at Upper Crust is the Chocolate Italian Cream and the Gato Marissa cakes. They also have an assortment of cookies, pastries, muffins and other sweet treats. It is not unusual to find a line to get to your heavenly pastries and coffee, however, the line goes rather quickly. I lucked out when I realized this was located on the walking route from my wax/sugar salon to my labs & haircut places. I had just read on Reddit a couple days prior that this was recommended as an alternative to another Austin bakery. When I walked in I was surprised to find many older individuals sitting and chatting, so I thought there might be some kind of event. But it's probably just the demographics of the neighborhood! Based on the decor I can tell they're not trying to be a "trendy" bakery and remain true to their identity as a neighborhood business. They still had a good number of pastries available but I did get the last strawberry danish of the day (pictured). I also got the almond croissant. Tried both a chocolate cake and a strawberry gâteau cake as well as a cinnamon roll. The gateau was amazing and very different from the chocolate cake. Honestly, the chocolate cake was decent, but it tasted like any grocery store could have made it. The cinnamon roll was less doughy and more flaky but buttery and delicious. Came on a Saturday late afternoon, and they were still quite busy! This is a chill neighborhood spot serving all sorts of desserts, drinks, and teas. They also have plenty of seating, so a great place if you're looking to study or meet up with some friends. Parking can be a little difficult at times, but they do have a designated lot that does extent to the back of the shop. Regular coffee (pretty standard, but pretty good) -around $5 a cup of coffee. Not too upset by that considering that Starbucks charges about the same price. -great seating, fun, decor, and plenty of round tables to sit around and chat Overall, definitely recommend this neighborhood spot! I've been here about 3 times and the service is always great, with friendly and attentive staff. All the available pastries, cakes, muffins, etc. are on display and you order at the counter. Good amount of indoor seating, and the tables are spread out enough that it doesn't feel crowded. For parking, there's parking along the side and around the back - this most recent visit, we were able to find a spot without issue but sometimes it can get a bit crowded. Cinnamon Roll (5/5) - A must try at Upper Crust! They run out later in the day, so would recommend going in the morning to snag one (or two). - Nice and buttery, just the right amount of sweetness. Latte (5/5) - Classic latte, no complaints here! Usually get mine with one shot of espresso. Coconut Cream Pie, slice (3.5/5) - Tons of coconut if you're a fan of that! Also a great option to share with others - A tad on the sweeter side, with slightly dry crust Texas Croissant (3/5) - Features Monterey Jack cheese & jalapeños - Decent savory option, but not too memorable Apple Danish (4/5) - Sweet and flaky, with nice texture to the filling All in all, lots of variety, solid flavors, and good service! Very poor service on Christmas eve. I went and bought 18 cookies for $65 (yeah!) with some of the cookies priced at $5.25. For that price, you get no smile, terrible cashier service and no parchemin or wax paper between cookies. And if you want smaller quantities, they tell you they have no small box. read more

My family goes crazy for the chocolate Italian cream cake. It's super moist, a little thick (in the best way), with layers of coconut and pecans with the most amazing chocolate cream cheese icing. aaaaaand I'm back for more. The sausage puff is the perfect savory pastry to enjoy here. The sausage itself is hearty and salty, very filling and satisfying. Next time, I might ask for it to be heated a bit longer so it's served hotter. The pastry wraps around the sausage beautifully, with a golden exterior that has a nice crunch, while the inside remains tender with just the right amount of chew. Gingerbread cookies are a longtime favorite of mine, and I was excited to finally try it here. I love that it is truly gingerbread and not a ginger snap. The soft texture pairs perfectly with the warm, spiced flavor. Some tall bald dude helped the yt woman in front of me and then just left without acknowledging that I was even standing there next in line. I popped by here the other day and picked up some of their tortilla soup and a serving of Italian cream cake. The line was long, but moved rather quickly. I don't frequently stop by this place so I asked the person helping me for a bit of advice. They were so kind and you could tell they were passionate about their work and the food they serve. The ambiance was a nice chill feeling where you could tell folks were lingering with no sense of urgency...simply enjoying their day, maybe even coming back for a refill of coffee. Got home and the soup was delicious. It was a lot heartier than most tortillas soups I've had. Also the Italian cream cake was HUGE for one...and I only got one slice. I come here often for lunch with my coworker. We love the pastries and the tomato bisque soup. The dip French sandwich is also one of my favorite items on the menu. The place is cute with French decor, including the restrooms. The staff is friendly and ready to help; they are very attentive to cleaning up after customers leave, so the tables are available for new customers. Coming here for coffee and a pastry is also a good idea! It has been in this location for a while now and it keeps thriving, meaning the quality is maintained. You also see a lot of the same staff working here. This also means people like coming here to work and enjoy what they do. There is continuity and good treatment with the employees, which in turn they pass onto the customers. I will continue coming here every now and then for my Tomato Bisque and more. read more

My favorite & most sentimental part of Uppercrust is getting a giant cinnamon roll and cup of coffee (both of which are SO good here), and sitting for a couple hours with my bestie out on their patio. Now I bring my kids when we are back in Austin for a visit, because Uppercrust has become THEIR sentimental place too. Other menu items worthy of a mention: their cheese soup and tuna salad. On the first day, I was too late (came around 2 pm) to get cinnamon rolls as they were all sold out so I ended up getting a carrot cake slice $3.98. On the second day, I arrived significantly earlier than the previous day and got the cinnamon roll $3.25, Apple turnover $3.85, and apple pie slice $4.95. - The carrot cake was the best item I had and tasted better with each bite. - The cinnamon roll was good and soft but tasted significantly better when warmed up. Also the rolls are covered in cinnamon sugar rather than icing. - The apple turnover was a huge MISS: there was a lacking of apple filling and the bread texture was somewhat burnt. - The apple pie was alright but I did not expect it to be very cold when I got it but after warming it up it was a bit better. Overall, it's a decent bakery but the main items I'd recommend would of course be the carrot cake and the cinnamon roll. read more

A true Austin gem, Upper Crust Bakery is an icon in the bakery-sandwich-soup arena. Family members have been going to Upper Crust for decades and introduced me to the establishment when I moved to Austin 15 years ago. A "go to" place for a super delicious sandwich/soup combo for lunch, a mainstay for ordering fantastic cakes for family celebration occasions, and a great place to stop of a slice of delicious cake or pie with a cup of coffee. This stop featured a "spider-themed" cake (red velvet cake) for a birthday party, as well as my customary slice of Italian Cream Cake. Sampled the Italian Cream cake last evening, deelish as always! Birthday party is later today, so no intel on the red velvet cake as of the time of writing. No doubt it will be a solid 10/10, as always! Great Central Austin location. Staff is always friendly and helpful! Parking can be tricky in the small lot next to the building, you can turn north into the back parking lot off of 45th Street, just be aware it can be tight traveling back there ... two-way traffic (so says the sign), but if there are cars parked back there, it's one car through at a time, whichever way you're going. You can get a slice of cake or pie but they also do custom whole made cakes. We got a slice of their carrot cake and cheesecake. Both were really delicious. It was so dense and delicious, the outside was a bit crispy and coated with sugar while the inside was soft and a little doughy, it was amazing.
