Unfortunately, I don't think I'll ever come back I this place again. I got about 10 pastries back on Mother's Day and they tasted 2 days old. On top of that I bought 4 egg tarts to bring to a friend's house. I bought the stuff around 10am and got to my friend's house at 3pm(same day) by the time I took the egg tarts out of the back they were moldy!! I was mortified. I guy at the register was nice to me. But I'm surprised if he didn't see there was mold either that or they were 2 days old which is why they had mold on them since it usually takes 2 days to develop due to moisture and being out. Chinese/Taiwanese bakery. A little hard to find because their signage is small and it didn't even look open from the street. Located in the corner of the plaza (next to the grocery store). Cute little bakery with a sweet older lady who speaks zero English but was nonetheless extremely welcoming and kind. She even gave my toddler a complimentary macaron. Sweet. I am usually pretty adventurous with trying new pastries/snacks and it generally works out well. Unfortunately, I did not like most of the things we took home that day (my husband agreed). A taro egg ball thing -- not fans. A gelatinous rice blob inside a bamboo leaf (believe it's called Zongzi) -- also didn't work for us. Finally, the beef puff (which seemed like a safe bet) fell short of expectations. It's my fault -- I ignored that part that said "beef floss." It had a stringy/processed texture that I just didn't like. I just wasn't a fan of the flavors/textures -- but obviously that's subjective. I did enjoy the garlic bread we also thankfully bought -- it was soft and flavorful. If you're not familiar with the foods, I'd recommend making sure you get a few "safe" items like the cream bread or garlic bread. The breads are so soft and airy and there are so many options. I couldn't decide what I wanted but I settled on a hot dog bread and some egg tarts and curry puff. I loved the hot dog bread you can't go wrong with that. I didn't like the egg tarts that much though. It's on the corner and the breads are just wrapped and put out. Almost tucked away in a corner of the market square, I love this place. Have cash on hand if you're just going to grab a couple of thing. Their pastries are pretty cheap. (^__^ ) Surprisingly, they have one of my top two apple turnovers in Austin, but that is not why I come here. Still, it's become a staple. I've watch this place went from eh - to new ownership - to secret menu - to expanded explicit menu. Came back today and I was relieved that covid nor winter storm have stopped their growth. If you haven't tried their banh mi, give it a whirl. It's discreetly off in the corner right next to MT Market. They now have clearer signs of the banh mi offering so you can't miss it anymore. Takeout only, each banh mi is $5.95 and is one out of two places that have Xiu Mai (meatball) The Dac Biet (Special) has a deep variety of deli meat. Cut thin but a big portion of. Viet ham, cheesehead (not really cheese just different varieties of pork cuts gelled together by its own fat), chinese bbq pork, proper liver pate and butter. Thit Nuong (Grilled Pork) is on the sweeter side with fatty chewy texture. Very flavorful. Bread is the airy with crispy outside and is pretty big. Definitely justify the $5.95. Banh Bao, Pate Chaud all the classic Viet bakery stuff. read more

Some family and I stopped in because the Baguette House & Cafe didn't have any baguette bread left because they were fulfilling a big order. All we wanted to grab was a couple of baguettes for dinner. When we went in we were greeted by an older gentleman, but he only spoke Chinese.. This made it pretty impossible to order verbally. Therefore, we pointed to a couple of baguettes that were sitting in the display. We held up 4 fingers since we decided to get more than just a couple. He shook his head and said, "ok," but we waited for about 15 minutes and he brought out "banh mi." At this point we just weighed our options because we don't speak Chinese and just paid, settling with forking up $24 for the sandwiches. We couldn't communicate the issue, so we just went ahead and supported the store since they were really trying to help us. Once we got home and unwrapped the sandwiches, the picture below is what we received. I try to say this in the most respectful way I can since the staff was very nice, but this is such a disgrace of bánh mì.. They used garlic bread that was falling apart and slapped mayonnaise and American cheese on it, like Kraft singles.. I am not a picky eater and I could not muster up the gut to finish it.. It's sad because I've heard good things about the Banh mi here, but this was upsetting.. I can't say anything for the pastries, but from what I've seen the management has changed but they are somewhat still serving Vietnamese dishes that are disgraceful to their origins read more

Looks like Texas Bakery has changed hands again because it's now a Chinese style bakery. Think 85C but mom 'n pop style. Came after lunch and there was an impressive selection of stocked pastries to choose from. Ranging from stuffed breads, sponge cakes, fried sesame mochi balls and Taiwanese mooncakes. It was impossible to try everything but my top picks so far are the green onion & pork floss roll and the mooncakes. I liked the bread's texture and rich savory flavor. The mooncakes had a thin and delicate pastry shell. Coupled with a generous amount of filling (Red bean, sesame, etc) that was smooth and had just the right amount of sweetness. I usually visit this bakery after eating at a restaurant in Chinatown. There are all kinds of goodies here...cookies, cakes, cupcakes, etc. I usually look at the goodies and feeling a little overwhelmed (and full from my earlier dinner) pass on buying anything. Tonight, I bought a slice of Tiramisu cake to take home and it was delicious! Very velvety cake, great taste without being too overpowering like Tiramisu sometimes can be. Came here the past couple of times when we come to MT supermarket. This is a cute little bakery in the corner of the shopping center. Definitely looks family owned and operator. I asked them how long they have been here the lady said "too long" lol Every time we come here we end up at the rack of buns with the salted egg yolk inside! Those things are delicious! Last time we wanted the red bean one but it was out and they said wait we will be right back. Went to the back and got us some and oh my goodness delicious. We tried every flavor and the taro, red bean, and durian are our favorites by far! all the other stuff is really really good too and honestly it's just run by a sweet older couple or at least I think it is since they are always there. It is not a big one but they do make Vietnamese desserts with ingredients that places may not be brave enough to do it or have it in their store because of the pungent smell-- yes I am talking about durian!! I got their pandan jelly and durian crepes. The crepes had a cream and fresh durian filling. I also got their pate chaud which is a Vietnamese meat pastry. I travel from downtown austin to this bakery at least once a week to get my fix of Vietnamese iced coffee/ Ca Pha Sua Da, egg custards, and Pate Meat Pie/Pate So. Just a special shout out to the Vietnamese iced coffee here, every time I go somewhere with VIC I always make it a point to get it and try it. This place has hands down the best Vietnamese iced coffee in Austin, no bitterness at all and you can custom the strength that you want. All the pastries are hot and fresh every time I come. Although I come mainly for my favorites, I really like everything the store has to offer like the cream puffs, Che and cake slices. It's a family owned business, and the award winning baker who is also the owner is so sweet. She will always make you feel like you're at home and that you leave satisfied. I can't recommend this place enough, it's hidden away in the corner of Chinatown next to MT Supermarket. 10/10 would come everyday if I could. read more

I was trying to find a bakery that makes flan cakes, and I came across this place. I mainly chose this place because of the flan photo I saw on their Yelp page. I went in asking if they could make me the flan cake I saw in their photos. The man at the register told me to hold on because he needed to ask his wife in the kitchen. The wife walks to the front to greet me and I explain what I wanted and showed her the picture on their yelp page. She shook her no and said "That's not our picture that H-E-B's picture from years ago, but we can make something like that but only round (the cake was a heart shape)." I hesitated before I said ... uh ok well as long as you can make me a flan cake. I paid $30, and pickup was the next day at 6pm. The next day I call at 5:30pm to see if it's ready, and the wife tells me it is. I get there and she starts apologizing before I even see the cake. She brings it out and I realize that it looks like it's falling apart. Apparently someone dropped it, and she was sorry. She tried to offer me several pastries which I replied no thanks and I walked out the store. I get home to try to make the best out of a bad situation. I try hard to not judge a book by its cover but that shit looked and tasted horrible. It was the worst flan I have ever eaten. They need to take flan off their menu because they obviously don't know how to make it. I should've ran out the door when they mislead me with that photo, but my dumbass tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. No, this place is NOT closed and they open seven days a week. I have been there many times, and I saw their business still pretty good everyday!! Spent $45 on a small strawberry bake, this was the worst cake I've ever had in my life. This sponge cake was dry and was repurposed from another cake. The cream had red beans or something that they scraped off to fool customers. New ownership from previous, I do not recommend. read more

This bakery is now under new ownership and the cakes are amazing! Their version of the pandan cake with fruit is the best I've had. It's an unusual flavor but trust me, it's amazing. The owner is a master chef from Vietnam (her video is on loop in the bakery). They did my daughter's bday cake and my wedding cake. My brothers hit a pot hole while transporting my cake resulting in the top tier falling over. The owners saved the day. They fixed the cake quickly and without charging us. The three tiered cake was as good as new! I'll be a customer for life! read more

Been wanting to pop in this place for years. I'm not often in the area but I'll definitely always now make a pit stop. The coconut sweetbread was chewy, soft and perfectly balanced with sweetness. Texas Bakery is back with new owners! They sell a lot of breads I grew up buying in Houston so I'm pretty happy about it. All the ones I've tried so far have also been super soft and lightly sweetened. I also like the roll cakes they have. My boyfriend thinks it's too light on the whipped cream but as someone who doesn't like things that are too heavy on the cream I think it's just right. Highly recommend the pork floss/scallion roll, it's a bit oily but it's soft and packed with the right balance of savory and sweet flavor. Some names are lost in translation (such as taro bread becoming "yutou bread") but if you're not a picky eater or have food restrictions you can't go wrong picking something random up. I also like the flakey pastries they have! It's not as strong on the durian or salted egg flavor like KN Kitchen was, but I still loved the texture and fillings they offered. The egg tart is a something of a miss, I like cookie-type crusts but the filling is a bit watery for me. On some days they'll have curry puffs and chives box/pockets by the counter. Those were amazing and I would definitely recommend it to anybody who comes across them. Just lightly re-heat either up over medium heat and it's good to eat. The Taiwanese style sandwiches are also good! My boyfriend thinks they're just ok but I like them because I find them more soft and flavorful than the ones I used to eat during my childhood. read more
